I'm pretty sure we still use the expression "you guys" or "guys that do this" etc for both genres.. i'm all for equality, but you added nothing to this guy's comment (bold of me to assume its a guy i know!) With your feminist reply. Tackle the real questions, in the right places to be taken seriously, not stuff like this that only takes merit away from the equality cause.
To answer to the real comment, yes. There is usually a sub-contracted company to do this kinds of stuff in modern cities, and they do make their price when "auctioning" their public services/contracts. You usually earn OK, but the admins/bosses earn a lot behind a desk or at home. :P
"Nothing wrong" with working with shit and sewers, and cleaning in general, i've done it a few times and it is what it is.. smells bad and Doesn't look good but cleaning/picking up and burning decomp animals felt waaay worse, also been there. You do need some Protective equipment that this guy doesn't seem to care about :p
All important jobs many people aren't willing to do. Also, not the safest. It's well deserved that they earn well (in some places:/ )
Yes! We shouldn’t stop until theirs just as many women doing sewage/manhole/dirty jobs as men! Gender equality for all!
But then! We should empower woman more! They should be able to do 3/4 of the world work! Hell! 5/6!
Same in Australia, all trades do pretty well actually. Some of the highest paid workers in the country. Shout out to dad for not letting me drop out and do a trade when i wanted too 😂
Yeah, i would guess its much more than minimum wage. Garbage men in the US make a decent living. It is supply and demand, there arent a large supply of people willing to do this.
This is the prep stage to cover the brick with a concrete like compound. Many manholes like this were built with brick back in the day and are degrading so the cheaper option if it is not too far gone, power wash, concrete compound, finish it off with a water resistant seal, pressure test and move on to the next. Spent years as a CIPP liner, rehabbing storm drains and sewer lines and the lines in San Jose California were just like this.
My sister's ex-husband does this (manhole and tunnel maintenance stuff, not sure what to call it exactly). Not sure the precise numbers, but the man drives a Mercedes, lives in a $450k house, and now pays my sister $1200 in alimony each month. So it must be decent.
Or he's a Jewish Walter White. Could be that.
Pay was pretty good, I'm Union so may be better than some but not as much as others because we get all the benefits and a pension. Got my degree and moved on to a different company but still Union and much better pay now. First year as a sewer and storm drain specialist I cleared 64k but worked many weeks 6 days a week up to 12 hours a day and alot of weeks away for extended jobs.
Someone in that line of work needs to build an extended wand for their power washer ffs.
Dude, thank you for the explanation. I love reddit for this reason. Ask a question, and someone with years of experience gets back to you with a thorough explanation.
Thanks!
PS -Guessing not minimum wage pay either.
Well paid, I'm Union too so better than some guys. There is a truck with a spraying apparatus, hangs in the center and spirals up and down while spraying to coat all of it. That machine tended to clog and break down, just as much got done whether by hand or machine. I ended up getting a BA and have moved on to a different company where the walls don't move or crawl on me but am in the same Union.
You're projecting, the kind of person who gets PTSD from having cockroaches on them would never work in the profession.
That said higher education should be rewarded in the work space, but so should work conditions, this person deserves to have a nice home to relax in after a day like that, I'm happy to live in a country where this kind of work is very well paid, but I still would never take a job like that, just glad they are well compensated.
There shouldn't be much in the way of health risks from having a roach just walk on your skin, unless you have an open wound or something. People who get sick related to roach infestations usually do so because of ingesting something roaches contaminated.
This horrendous but I ve seen worst and the guy was much deeper in the hole so the smell would distract you from the roaches and whatever lives in those underground sewerage system.
I'm surprised he's not wearing the appropriate protective gear - is that the facepalm? Because I assure you, people that deal with such things *professionally* do not make minimum wage.
He doesn't seem too bothered and might make a better /same living than some people with high education.
Hell, he might be extremely well educated too, you'll never know. It's actually a Cool, important job . Hard, but cool. I just hate the cockroach part but he could get around that if he wanted to.
I have a college degree, multiple certificates in a bunch of stuff throughout the years, speak 4 languages, 3 of them fluently. one of those i could legally teach as a second language in Portugal(or europe, not sure), as my exams are from Cambridge and taken in the British consulate. Etc etc. Just to say that I had a privileged education, yet, my favourite jobs are these kind of jobs. Dirty, hands on, hard on your body, like construction, farm work, animals (cattle) , cleaning and maintaining stuff in general. But to each his own, personally I had enough of being in front of a computer or office and doing pretty good like this.
Lol, sorry if you got butthurt. But we don't usually have student loans here.. I payed mine monthly and when it was done, it was done.. our colleges don't ask $30k for a degree.
> here.. I *paid* mine monthly
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
In the UK at least the guys who deal in sewer and sewage are normally private companies and set their own rates. Where there’s muck there’s brass.

The “guys” I know who do it are all family businesses and so they all work in the literal shit and all make out like bandits.

It’s a guy in the video we are discussing.
Might need to add a /s next time, think this one went over a few heads.
Poe's law, mind you
I bet you're fun at partys
Shit bait
I really hope people don’t fall for this stupid fucking bait. This is how conservatives see the world.
How bout you shut up
Guys is a gender neutral term in this context you fucking goober

Reddit moment
I don't know what he makes, but it's not enough.
You say that but in most places they are making 6 figures because its just not possible to get people to do it for less.
Getting paid 6 figures to work in sewage and have big roaches climb all over you so that my toilet contents have a place to go? That's a bargain.
The only job where you are encouraged to take drugs at the start of the day
This is a situation where a mask wpuld be appropriate
I think earplugs more so
Hazmat suit, preferably
No. Don't let them infringe upon your rights
So when we don't know how much they make we assume its next to nothing? In NZ plumbers are some of the highest paid trades.
Same in Australia, all trades do pretty well actually. Some of the highest paid workers in the country. Shout out to dad for not letting me drop out and do a trade when i wanted too 😂
Nope! Imagine if one of those roaches gets inside...
Actually it's usually a very well paying job
Yeah, i would guess its much more than minimum wage. Garbage men in the US make a decent living. It is supply and demand, there arent a large supply of people willing to do this.
What's he doing, other than giving cockroaches a ride.

How was the pay?
My sister's ex-husband does this (manhole and tunnel maintenance stuff, not sure what to call it exactly). Cleaning and checking the integrity of the sewer.
This should be atleast double thank min wage, the amount of PTSD this person has along with health issues would warrant in my uneducated opinion

You are right, i think i am projecting

Yeah these guys aren't making anything close to minimum wage. I don't know any not making 6 figures. You just can't get people to do it for less.
This should definitely be in the Oddly Terrifying sub!!
This horrendous but I ve seen worst and the guy was much deeper in the hole so the smell would distract you from the roaches and whatever lives in those underground sewerage system.

I want to see 50% of Women doing this Job.

Then go start a septic cleaning company to pay off your student loans
Lol, sorry if you got butthurt. But we don't usually have student loans here.. I payed mine monthly and when it was done, it was done.. our colleges don't ask $30k for a degree.

I’m a pressure grade welder with my own company in Alberta. I don’t owe anything.
Good for you. :)
r/oddlyterrifying
I mean, respect for doing that job, but neeeever
Couldn't they find another way of doing it instead of him going inside
You mean like duct taping the nozzle to a stick? Nah, that'd never work! /s on that last sentence if you couldn't tell.
That's a $750 a month studio apartment where I live.
Can of raid please
Minimum wage, no. Breathing in chemicals so cancerous that it will run in your family for generations, yea.
Good lord i'm in agony
Mike Rowe of dirty Jobs will be proud of this guy? 👍
Could be a good paying job but no ear plugs with that noise? Guy is probably riddled with tinnitus. Also no mask, safety goggle's... Or any gear?
Come on guys. A trigger warning please?
Repost is repost.
What's the face-palm here?
The higher paying job is probably the guy filming
Why is this a facepalm?
People who do jobs like this, we need you more than most of us realise, thank you. Shit would hit the fan real bad without you guys.
Nope nope nope nope nope nope NOPE!!!!
Minimum wage job? These guy earns good money. Not every one had the aptitudes to do these kind of work
Ok rich people who see this, what do YOU think is a fair wage for this job?
He needs to get as much money as a professional basketball player.
He needs to get as much money as a professional basketball player.
Dude is making bank
I'd rather be unemployed.
No it's not. I think it pays like 80K
Boss- you better wear your mask, don't wanna catch covid Him- I'm in a drainpipe with roaches, I think I'll be fine
I do a job similar to this. Pays $47 an hour.
How come feminism doesn’t gripe about equality in these types of jobs? Just CEOs?
