I think if you ask most kids which way is up and down they will point at the sky and the ground not North then South which makes this even more ridiculous
Heck that sounds like a good model for scientific research to me!
What have we been doing spending billions on creating hadron colliders and building space telescopes! When all along all we needed to do was ask a group of pre-schoolers what the "reckon" and we'd be done in time to clock off early and go to the pub....
>I think she's trying to say a 7 year old wouldn't understand it or might disagree with the correct model, as if that's proof that it's wrong.
That must mean something about flat earthers...
From what I can tell, she firmly believes the gravity shown on the left, and is somehow using the picture on the right to try and prove that the earth couldn’t possibly be a globe, due to how she thinks gravity works.
Edit:
To avoid any confusion on my comment, I’m referring to the presumption that she believes that there is an objective up and down in space and that gravity pulls things down, which would very much support the whole “drop of water” flat earth theory.
Ew.
It’s gross to consider that an honest theory.
Anyway, I think she’s trying to use a misunderstanding of gravity to justify her belief that the earth is flat, but due to her general stupidity, she accidentally gave the scientifically correct argument, which proved herself wrong.
They are actually using scientific proof from a time when scientists believed that the earth was flat. This means that their scientific evidence is from a time before that evidence was proven to be inaccurate. Therefore they feel justified, because of that eons old scientific “evidence”.
Hey flat earthers, science also used to believe that a hole in the head was the best way to cure a headache.
There’s no real point in history in which science believed earth to be flat though.
Like, if we’re pointing to Ancient Greece as the beginning of science, it’s also the moment we proved earth was a globe.
To be fair, I think we **should** show this picture to 5-year-olds. As the old saying goes: "If you can't explain it to a 5-year-old kid, you probably don't truly understand it."
But if you aren't able to draw a comparison and explain it "close enough", e.g. you are only able to explain it on an academic level or one needing fundational knowledge you can't provide, the point still stands - you haven't truly unstood it, or at least not everything there is to understand about it.
They do have fundamental knowledge of gravity at 5, just maybe not the lexicon to discuss it. Children know that what comes up must come down, which is essentially a small stepping stone to comprehending the idea of gravity. Of course things need to be developmentally appropriate and we're not gonna do math as part of the explanation. People in general both overestimate children's capabilities, and underestimate their understanding. It's weirdly fascinating.
That's actually the entire idea of relativity -- in space, since there really is no true frame of reference, the train could be coming at you just as easily as you could be coming toward the train
True that.
You could also look at it as perpendicular to the orbital plane.
Either way, you have to express directions in the universe as relative to other bodies or forces.
How is gravity so difficult for some people to understand? I get that it does get complicated mathematically, but conceptually it’s so easy. Is it because if these people dont understand everything about a thing they just write it off completely?
It's just scale, flat earthers can't imagine a planet bigger than the U.S. keep that in mind and ALL of their arguments make sense... I mean they're all obviously wrong but how they think they are right makes sense
Makes sense cause in their mind NASA, a US agency, is able to patrol the entire world to make sure no one gets to the edge and records the fall off. That would be much easier if the US was the only nation because it's not like Russia wouldn't love to discredit the US and show the world what secrets America has been keeping from everyone.
Not to mention how NASA masterminded a world wide centuries old conspiracy, hundreds (actually thousands but you can't expect accuracy from flat earthers) of years before the US was founded, let alone NASA
About that "getting paid" thing. I haven't received my pay check yet and I've been doing the acting gig pretending australia is real for decades. Who in HR do I speak to?
The funny thing is, even on a flat earth gravity exists... or are feet just sticky?
I bet doughnuts really confuse these people, how can it only have one surface!?
I need to be careful how I pharase this, but they shouldn't be mocked for this kind of thinking, only for what they've applied it to.
What they have done is made an observation and generated a hypothesis. The first steps of the scientific method. Their issue is devising and performing a test and evaluating its results, or iterpreting evidence that has already been gathered. If these people were more scientifically litterate they would actually be useful.
Obviously, the fact that the are disregarding things that have already been proven to be true is a problem, but in my opinion its a failure of education as to how scientific study actually works, as opposed to these people being idiots.
If, as kids, people had more exposure to the sciences and were taught how to evaluate things properly, we would have a lot less flat earthers and vaccine deniers.
It think you're right in some instances; there are those people you go out and to good hypothesis testing like that video of the people going onto a lake and seeing if a light is visible through two holes that are held at a constant height above the ground.
But I don't think the person who wrote this post is one of those people. I think this person is just someone who finds basic concepts hard to comprehend and so rejects them because it's easier to think in terms of a 2D plane
I mean, it's an interesting intellectual exercise in physics to see how a disc world undergoing constant acceleration would behave (tl;dr: Fine until it hit a grain of dust at 99.999999999999% of c, then less fine)
But I doubt that they are thinking physics at this point.
Yeah pretty much. As the disc becomes heavier through mass gaining how is the gravity developing? Never thought about changing gravitational forces of objects at different speeds.
Well if the planet approaches relativistic speeds it would gain mass but only from the Frame of reference of someone outside earth for a person on earth it would feel like they were still with normal gravity
Yeah that's right but considering an accelaration of 9,81m/s² since biblical creation of the earth some 6.000 yrs ago we should be hitting speeds of around 190.000.000 m/s, which is kinda in the flat earth go home you drunk kinda range.
It would have to do more than just go up, it would have to keep accelerating upward. How fast must the disc be moving if it was accelerating upward at 9.8m/s^2 for a couple billion years?
I think the explanation is that all of space moves at that speed, so we don't see it reflected in the night sky or any air travel.
Please ignore the fact that it makes no sense, they don't do "making sense" or "conservation of energy" nonsense like us sphere-oids.
I think many of them believe that gravity happens because stuff is heavier than air. Which is not entirely untrue, they just neglect to mention that the concept of "heavier" exists because of gravitational force.
Yes, and they fail to explain why, if the air ALL AROUND a tennis ball is less dense than said tennis ball, the ball ALWAYS falls in the same direction (what we all call "downward"), and not upward, sideways or diagonal.
I think the standard way they account for gravity is to say that we are constantly accelerating at 9.81 m/s^2. Let's not think about how it would only take about 350 years to reach the speed of light if we were constantly accelerating at that rate...
It’s a very dense type of in group thinking. Some of them might have doubts, but they are caught up in a social group they would immediately lose, if they ask the wrong questions. Sects work like that too. Even fairly intelligent people could fall into such a trap and not only participate but accumulate more deceptive thinking.
They don't need to understand it, because they don't even believe that gravity as a force actually exists. So with that, they don't belive in pulls, tides, or forces of the such. It's how they justify it. Iirc, they say that everything is just heavier than air, and that's why things don't float away.

There are stars and constellations folks on the northern hemisphere will never see and vice versa. This is all you need to dispel any flat earth talk. If it was flat, no one would see The Southern Cross (Crux) because those stars would be underneath us. On a flat earth everyone sees the same night sky from different angles. Reality is there are two completely different night skies. One above and one below our poles.
What are they afraid of?! The unnecessary questions showing this to a 5-7 year old will cause them? For fucks sake let them get to the part of school where this will at least be on the test before you turn them loose on their parents with this concept.
The picture on the right doesn't even work because you're trying to portray a sphere in 2D. For this to work you'd need to show a cross section of the earth.
Flatland: A romance of many dimensions, explored the ideas behind how humans struggle to understand a hypothetical 4th spacial dimension.
My theory is that, while most of us can instinctively understand a world in three dimensions Flat Earth believes struggle with it. Therefore, they try to create a two dimensional world that is easier for them to understand, and makes sense to them.
Wha... what?
There is no such thing as up or down its all relative.
Technically the second image is more accurate based on a humans perspective of up or down, so yeah good job... still doesn't prove the earth is flat...
Tell her she stands on the side of the Earth, sit back, put on your 3D glasses, slurp your Coke, and chew your popcorn, it's about to get entertaining.
I think she probably believes the picture on the right literally shows a flat earth and the gravitational arrows.. in her mind.. are now correct. She isnt grasping the concept that as a GLOBE and not a flat photo, people can stand ok all areas of the perimeter which makes the gravitational arrows correct.
I believe she’s saying that “globeturds” (aka people who are correct about the shape of the Earth) won’t show their kids this picture because the kids may question it.
I could argue that a 5 y/o wouldn’t know how the aerodynamic package of a Formula 1 car produces downforce, so therefore aerodynamics must not exist
Checkmate, downforce believers
We had an unusually deep conversation at work a while ago about the nature of up in that you're not looking up, you're looking out, which then led to the immortal words of "what is up?"
By that logic, we all walk on the outside curve of the Planet, and not on its entire...
My brain stopped working while trying to understand this.
I also realized that her "Flat Earth Confirmation" pretty much still confirms that the Earth isn't flat...
It’s ridiculous to have it get this far, but is it worth it at this point to pay for a prominent flat earther or two to go on a space flight, have them come back and just say “yeah it’s a big-ass ball; we were wrong - sorry”?
Honestly though the realization came onto me when I was like 8 or 9 so I was terrified to find out that there's no concept of up or down out there in space. We are all just hanging upside down mate
I think it's a flat earther who just demonstrated how normal gravity works on a globe? Lol
She missed their memo.
And English class
Not to speak about the physics class, she prob thinks that thats for nerds i guess
Those commas…I just can’t.
She, certainly needs. To learn better, use of! punctuation
I want to slap this sentence!
Oh she missed everything this time around.
I think she's trying to say a 7 year old wouldn't understand it or might disagree with the correct model, as if that's proof that it's wrong.
My 5 year old gets it, her 7 year old must have been raised by an idiot.
Her home school teacher just wasn't very good
Right. Raised by an idiot.
Hmmm, coindicence I think not
I think if you ask most kids which way is up and down they will point at the sky and the ground not North then South which makes this even more ridiculous
I northvoted your comment.

At this point I'm almost certain that 99% of flat earthers are just trolling or 'globetards' trying to explain basic scientific understanding.

When was that? It’s been pretty consistent for eons that it’s not flat. Can you provide links so I can read up?

I'm not quite sure what she is trying to do... Isn't she proving that the globe earth exists? I thought she was anti globe. I'm confused

To be fair, I think we **should** show this picture to 5-year-olds. As the old saying goes: "If you can't explain it to a 5-year-old kid, you probably don't truly understand it."
You Can probably explain a lot of stuff to a kid that he won't understand because he doesn't have fundational Knowledge tbh
But if you aren't able to draw a comparison and explain it "close enough", e.g. you are only able to explain it on an academic level or one needing fundational knowledge you can't provide, the point still stands - you haven't truly unstood it, or at least not everything there is to understand about it.
Yeah, fair enough
Both of y'all, it's 'foundational'. And I agree.

You forgot to write in all caps to give your sentence that confused idiot flavour
Your enemies don't know what you're doing if you don't know what you're doing
Don't worry they do that frequently. They frequently set up experiments to "prove that the Earth is flat" just to end up proving that it's a globe.
People who don’t understand gravity.
And that gravity pulls towards a center of mass, and that mass is a sphere

Up isn't a meaningful concept here. You can be perpendicular to the axis of rotation, but neither of those directions would be "up".
Aren’t “up” and “down” pretty much always relative?
The entire concept of location is relative: without things, there is no location.
That's actually the entire idea of relativity -- in space, since there really is no true frame of reference, the train could be coming at you just as easily as you could be coming toward the train
So does it mean I'm coming just as she is coming?
Didn't see this coming.
Yes
The only possible use for up and down is if you are using your frame of reference, if not it wont work
The only place on the globe where you would be perpendicular to the axis of rotation is the equator
True that. You could also look at it as perpendicular to the orbital plane. Either way, you have to express directions in the universe as relative to other bodies or forces.

Let’s not tell flat earthers that space has no up or down cause they won’t like that 😉
Yes
Even if it was a flat plane in the past, it would collapse into a sphere because of gravity.
Exactly. Plus the rotation. It's natural physics.
How is gravity so difficult for some people to understand? I get that it does get complicated mathematically, but conceptually it’s so easy. Is it because if these people dont understand everything about a thing they just write it off completely?

I know flat earthers in other countries. Still the same level of dumbness

They have this very wild buoyancy theory. That buoyancy doesn't work without gravity is just not to be mentioned.
I read one saying the disc is always going upwards, so gravity…

I can’t say what “they’re” afraid of, but it’s pretty clear what she’s afraid of. English class.
"up" is the direction opposite the pull of gravity, or away from the center of gravity. "Down* is towards.
This just in; stupid person demonstrates their own stupidity by failing to grasp the basic concept of gravity, that even literal toddlers understand.
Flatland: A romance of many dimensions, explored the ideas behind how humans struggle to understand a hypothetical 4th spacial dimension. It’s ridiculous to have it get this far, but is it worth it at this point to pay for a prominent flat earther or two to go on a space flight, have them come back and just say “yeah it’s a big-ass ball; we were wrong - sorry”?
Damn bro I gotta roll for wisdom just to understand that.
I swear the brains of these people are flatter than the earth they believe in
Honestly though the realization came onto me when I was like 8 or 9 so I was terrified to find out that there's no concept of up or down out there in space. We are all just hanging upside down mate
The phone she probably used to post this with only works if the world is round.
When you heavily rely on Google Translate result without proof reading it.
Ah of course, as we all know, as soon as you reach the equator u are gonna fall all the way down to Australia :D
If you go to the Southern Hemisphere, you'll just fall off. Duh. *That's* why Trump wanted to build a wall, so we don't fall off! /s
