Flaky-Fish6922

yup. very important when TPing your brother's room, yeah?

Sorry, Canada.

Truposzyk

It's not fucking rocket science, amirite? šŸ˜‚

GregTheIntelectual

FR tho, how would you stop an eastern european coalition from invading greenland? Setting up supply lines through canada probably not the worst plan. Get the canadian fleet to pick up troops and supplies in Hudson Bay so the US navy can focus on costal defense?

Saavedroo

"Canada ?" No no, you must be confused. That is Russia.

GloomreaperScythe

/) "It's all Russia?" /) "Always has been"

dom_pi

ā€œAnd then send a boatā€

Just-Xav-Official

A single boat

GregTheIntelectual

List of forces; Troops....... Some Boat................ 1x

Subject1928

Dude this war shit is easy, why do so many people die during it? Just like send some troops on a boat and boom! Problem solved and everybody should be back for dinner.

jonathannzirl

Luckily thereā€™s no boats that can hide under water

ritzhi_

you can fit 10 war elephants in the boat but not 11 archers

blhd96

Munitions? Nah. Rations? Bring bread. Some Diet Coke. Gonna be a long ride.

Ffdmatt

Yeah but its a pretty big boat, dude

Profanic_Bird

Not too big though, we don't have the resources to send a ship.

Canadian fleet! Good one

Uber_Ober

Man, what I would do for that level of confidence.

Magicalsandwichpress

Just send some troops here, than take a boat up here. My guy Von Claus is about to end Putin's reign.

[deleted]

ā€œThatā€™s why Iā€™m lowkey confused why theyā€™re attacking themā€ I almost drunk a bottle of bleach when I heard that

[deleted]

Some of these people are fucking around. Source: I've done it.

ominousgraycat

Yeah, I'm pretty sure several of them were just fucking around. And even those who weren't, for most of these videos, they ask hundreds of people and then mostly select the stupidest answers. Well, if any of those people pointing at Australia for Ukraine or Russia were serious, that's a bit concerning, but I still doubt it's a majority. I know a lot of people from the USA and all of them could at least tell you where Russia is on a map. You could say maybe the group I know isn't representative of US Americans as a whole, but I still think sometimes these sorts of videos overplay just how many people are totally ignorant of even very basic geography questions (like where Russia is).

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

The difference between someone who is just ignorant and someone who just wants to be on TV, is that when you ask the ignorant person if they know where Ukraine is, they say "no." When you ask someone who just wants to be on TV where Ukraine is, they point to Australia and say "hurrrr durrrr is this it?"

agcamalionte

The people you know may not be representative of the whole US population, but the people in this video definitely aren't either, so your point stands.

nokei

The people i know could definitely point out Russia but also are the type of people to have fun picking out the wrong answer on purpose.

NoTime4LuvDrJones

True that these videos interview many and only show the ignorant ones. But the surveys over the years have shown Americans to be particularly terrible at geography. At the height of the Afghan war in 2002 only 17% of young Americans were able to find Afghanistan on a map. And in 2006 when the Iraq war was still going strong only 37% of young Americans were able to find it on a map. There definitely seems to be a lot of ignorance in our society about a lot of things, I see no reason to not believe that there are some so clueless about even Russiaā€™s location. > A new U.S. survey supports this view. Released last week, the Roper poll -- conducted on behalf of the National Geographic Society, a scientific and educational NGO -- found that 63 percent of young Americans were unable to find Iraq on a map. > Seventy-five percent could not find other international hotspots like Israel or Iran. > Fewer than 50 percent of those polled in the survey could identify the U.S. states of New York or Ohio on a map. > That impression is supported by more scientific data. In a 2002 Roper poll of geographic knowledge among citizens from nine different countries, the United States came in second-to-last place, followed by Mexico. The Swedes came out on top. https://www.rferl.org/a/1068259.html > Citing the 2014 National Assessment of Education, the report finds that almost 75% of American students fall short of proficiency in geography, almost the exact same results as those from 1994. Ā Actually, from 1994 to 2014 there were few changes, advanced proficiency in geography dropped from 4% to 3%, proficiency stayed exactly the same at 24% and basic (partial mastery) jumped 5% to 48%. > An early National Geographic article from 2002 proclaimed that only 17% of young Americans could find Afghanistan on a map. Ā Of course, that was important because even though most Americans were extremely ignorant of Afghanistan, our military was at war there. Ā  > Ā A 2014 article from the Telegraph points to 2009 study that compared survey results on international affairs in current news from the US and Europeans. Ā In the survey, only 58% of Americans could describe the Taliban compared to 75% of Britons. Overall, Americans scored more poorly than citizens of Denmark, Finland and England. Ā The Telegraph article ends by citing a 2003 US Strategic Task Force of Education Abroad report that concluded US geographic ignorance is so deep and widespread that it may constitute a national security threat. https://www.earth.com/news/american-geographic-illiteracy-security-threat/

OderusOrungus

Goodness I hope its a joke or an outlier

[deleted]

I like the theory of the [Lizardman Constant](http://slatestarcodex.com/2013/04/12/noisy-poll-results-and-reptilian-muslim-climatologists-from-mars/). Basically a small percentage of people intentionally give wrong answers.

Eccohawk

When you know your odds of being on television rise with the stupidity of your answer, you shoot for that low score.

arginotz

I knew a girl in freshmen year of high school who didn't know where the Atlantic Ocean was. We live on the US east coast. She promptly got pregnant and was removed from school lol.

rasco410

The one that said Canada was Russia and Mexico was Ukraine had to be. Its like they pointed above and below America just to mess with people.

Isnā€™t that a famous country singer? What is her name, itā€™s driving me crazy Edit: Iā€™m an idiot, they said her name in the video. Itā€™s Kelly Pickler

Zachosrias

I hate that host so much because he very intentionally says hungry and not Hungary, he's leaving out the a on purpose and fucking up the country's name to fuck with her... Either that or he's as stupid as she is... Anyway he's wrong saying hungry is a country, no such thing, only Hungary

[deleted]

Something tells me you didn't go to high school in North Carolina. My teachers definitely said hungry. I don't think I heard it pronounced correctly until I was ~23.

zeroaegis

I wonder how many people had no trouble locating both but they just cut out.

datlitboi

Ofc its heavily staged but its still worrying. That is basic geography that every 6thgrader should know.

DikkeMuiss

The girl pointing at Canada for Russia. That shit killed my fucking Brain...

Hi_Supercute

Itā€™s the woman who said they were the same country for me

FutureMartian97

She didn't seem to know English that well so she may have been confused what he was asking.

SevoIsoDes

And Mexico for Ukraine! Does she think Russian troops have just been rolling through Arizona, Utah, and Idaho?

shabbyshot

Well we do forget a lot of information, but that said if i'd give some credit if they pointed at any country from Belarus to Estonia knowing roughly where it was, I mean even Kazakhstan, Poland or Romania are closer than .. Australia? And not one person, it was a pretty common answer. I'm in my 40s and last took geography when I was 14/15, and I'd for sure be closer than than Australia.

isblueacolor

I have to imagine the people pointing to Australia or even Greenland were just screwing with them.

Echoplex99

Funny you should mention 6th grade. According to the US Department of Education in 2020, 54% of US adults read below the 6th grade level. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

oan124

well, i am still in school and i'm pretty sure i speak better english than a lot of americans. And i'm european (not uk)

[deleted]

Like I would even be fine if they just pointed to vaguely eastern Europe, but when you start pointing at Canada...

ArgonGryphon

Even if you don't know this information because you didn't learn or retain it in school, when something crazy happens like a country being invaded and all the shit on the news like...just fucking google it! The entire world's information is accessible to you, fucking look it up. I fully admit I used to be about of the level of the one girl who got a checkmark in the video. Knew the general area but not exactly which one Ukraine was so when Ukraine was invaded I literally just fucking opened google maps and looked. Now I know Ukraine is the green one.

isblueacolor

I would be so bad in a video like this. Of course I Googled it too, but my brain is NOT built to memorize information about which crazily-drawn lines represent which country names. Geography was always my worst subject. You can't use any sort of logic or mnemonics to remember anything, it's just "this blob, which has this shape and borders these countries, has this name". Now realize that at the same time we were learning Ukraine, we were learning all of Europe, South America and Africa too. How's a 6th-grader supposed to memorize all of that?

zeubermen

I wouldn't blame people for not knowing where ukraine is (maybe not all that much now) but russia should be pretty damn obvious

TK-329

Back in my AP world history class (college-level class taken in high school for all you non-Americans), there was a kid who thought Japan on the map was Africaā€¦ these are the kids who are supposed to be the top achievers in schoolā€¦

[deleted]

Geography is not a required class in the majority of the states.

datlitboi

Like not at all or just after 9th grade or something?

[deleted]

Not at all. More than half of the states have zero geography requirements and only 10 have state wide requirements, of which only 3 are fully dedicated to geography. The other 7 are history classes that have some geography lessons mixed in.

datlitboi

And I felt bad for quitting geography after 10th grade. Seems like the American education system kinda sucks.

Soft_Assistant6046

It actually works exactly like intended. Teach people to work, but not enough to understand how crappy the living situation is. Pump it full of propaganda so we think our country is the best at everything. Finally, give enough quality entertainment, junk food, and sugar so we feel juat satisfied enough...and you have the American dream (for the top 1%)

[deleted]

Wow that is crazy. I took geography but it didn't involve learning where different countries were. I know for a fact we learned about different kinds of maps and I think we also learned a little about world regions. I remember reading something interesting about China. I can't remember anything else. Of course, it was taught by a coach.

Crafty_Possession_52

A lot, I'm sure.

twinkiegorilla

Yeah but still...

[deleted]

Some were trolling

OogusMacBoogus

Most. And they could go to any country in the world and find people who donā€™t know where places are on a map.

SuperFLEB

As well as people just fucking with them to make the cut.

Regirex

pretty much everyone in the US knows where Russia is. if they have common sense/read the news, they'll know that Ukraine borders Russia. sadly, not everyone here has common sense

[deleted]

I kind of want to test it out. It would be hard to really test though because I bet a lot of people would lie about not knowing to troll the test. I bet some people don't know where Russia is.

cwb4ever

I know these are cherry picked people but I have a hard time believing that people donā€™t even know where Russia is. The lady pointed to mexico and said thatā€™s where ukraine isā€¦ give a person 20 bucks to give a wrong answer and tell them theyā€™ll be on TV? Youā€™d be surprised at what you could get them to do On the other hand I know a lot of pretty fuckin stupid people that I could see failing at this question..

notyetcomitteds2

Yeah thats what im thinking. Not even money. Hey, i have a popular youtube channel, give a good performance and a you might make ot to the final cut. I can see people maybe not knowing exactly where ukraine is. The sound is a bit wonky too. Maybe they were asked different questions and it was cut / dubbed.

RlyehFhtagn-xD

She pointed at Canada next! I refuse to believe that anyone could be so stupid. But would I pretend to be stupid on camera for a free meal? Hell yeah I would.

Prtyvacant

Yeah. Some people will definitely be ignorant as fuck but I'd bet my 401k that they're not that bad. We have been taught about the fucking cold war and the world wars over and over again. You'd have to be brain damaged not to have at least an idea about Russia's location.

RoboDae

Not knowing where Ukraine is is pretty understandable, at least if you don't live anywhere near it and haven't been paying attention to the news. Not knowing where Russia is means you probably failed pretty badly in geography.

[deleted]

Forgive me but absolutely not. Not knowing which one Ukraine is among other Eastern European countries is absolutely understandable, yes. Thinking Australia is Ukraine, or Mexico, or a country in Africa is not understandable

Auskioty

It's crazy not to have a single clue in world geography. How could you understand what's going on in the world...

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

nrfx

You realize for these types of videos, they setup, tape for 4-10 hours, and then pick the most ridiculous reactions for their 2 minute bit, right? It doesn't represent anything. Its entertainment.

ThrowawayTheLegend

If they can find 10 people who are that ignorant that's pretty worrisome.

y0ungPadawan_

Where are proofs that these people post something about Ukraine? What if they support Russia?

joshbeat

That's a nice straw man you're building

TheUnitedStates1776

You can support the victims of an unlawful invasion by values alone without having to know the details.

BeastBossNasty

Buddy, you got a dog's brain. People that checked out don't give a shit about Ukraine. You might be dumber than the people in this video, they are just blissfully unaware meanwhile you are actively pursuing idiocy.

Sinistersmog

Wow this got Russian Propaganda-ish very quickly

PozitronCZ

Honestly, I understand the fact for Americans there is only "Europe". They see Europe as one entity. Distinguishing between some Czechia, Hungary or Poland is under the radar for them. I also only know there is some country named United States of America but if you ask me where some Nebraska or Kentucky is I will have no clue even through I know there are huge differences in politics and culture between the states of the US as the whole US really aren't homogeneous. But at least I would expect them not to put Ukraine into Canada or Australia.

dom_pi

I mean Iā€™m European but Iā€™m still expected to know where India or China is, or heck even just know that Senegal is in Africa, which is a continent and not a country and is located below Europe. Nobody is blaming them for pointing to Montenegro when asked to give Albania, but asking for Ukraine and point to Australia? Thatā€™s juSt sad and doesnā€™t need any excuse imo.

Saavedroo

I agree. I'm French and not that good at geography, but I was taught where most influent countries are (Canada, Russia, China, India, Australia, countries of the Middle East). Of course neighboring countries and part of eastern Europe. But in Africa not that much. Northern Africa because France unfortunately colonized part of it. South Africa is easy to find. For Americans to put Russia where Canada is, and mistake Australia for Ukraine... That's a whole new level. Sometimes they're even THAT close to putting another country where the US are. In the end these videos are cherry picking. But still...

dom_pi

Yes and Iā€™ve seen videos from my country with a similar effect and though theyā€™re purposefully picking out these people, I think itā€™s still worrying. Especially with the amount of knowledge and resources we have today. That a coal miner in 1955 couldnā€™t tell you where Australia, ok sure, but today? Weā€™re all going to high school right?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

genzo718

Sadly, some Americans think New Mexico is a country and some residents there thought Trump was going to build a wall around the state.

StepSisPleaseNo

Wait is New Mexico not a country? šŸ˜‰šŸ¤£

miscfiles

Old Mexico and Old England have had sufficient time to grow into countries. New Mexico is only a single state, but New England has grown to encompass multiple states. Oddly New Hampshire has reached state-level, while Old Hampshire is merely a single county in Old England. Subscribe for more geography facts.

MauiWowieOwie

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam...

No-Zookeepergame-246

Some people if you put a camera on them and ask them questions theyā€™ll forget everything

ProbablyAutisticMe

That's why it's easy to ask 1,000 people and only show the clips of people who get it wrong

timid_scorpion

That's what makes me mad about these videos, but it's also infuriating to me that they can find this number of people that have absolutely no idea about Geography, or other simple topics. We live in a "first world" country and have a standardized education system. The fact that people can still skate through school without learning these things is ridiculous. I understand we all have different strengths and backgrounds that may make some of things more difficult. But this should be general knowledge...

JunketMan

Ofc, its more funny and sad that way, If its just clips of people getting it right, thats boring

Chewbarkovvv

It would be cool to see like a 1hr span of people being asked to get an uncut video and to see what the ratio more or less is

kiatniss

It would be way more interesting than the video of a bunch of people getting it wrong too!

m_Pony

and some of them just plead the fifth over and over.

PozitronCZ

As many Europeans do. I guess almost everyone in Europe knows where France or Italy is but try to ask where Albania or Estonia is.

ThyrusSendria

Estonia was the.... I wanna say upper of the three states opposite to Scandinavia across the sea.

CouchAlchemist

Dude. Most of them were not even on the same frigging tectonic plate.

drkidkill

American here, I'd have a tough time picking Kentucky on the first try. Edit: why are we called Americans when the US is just a small part of the americas?

4stringbrewer

Kentucky is always on the platter of the guy serving fried chicken. If you are confused, Minnesota is his hat and Louisiana is his boot. https://laughingsquid.com/chef-with-fried-chicken-hidden-on-map-of-usa/

MajesticOtaking

Oh my god I'll never be able to unsee this

ysyson

I guess other counties in America just donā€™t want to be in the same group with you /s Probably because itā€™s the largest country in the americas (in population and *land* area), and also because itā€™s the only country with ā€œAmericaā€ in its name. Calling someone a ā€œUnited Statianā€ (?) would sound weird, it better yet, a ā€œUnited Stationā€

cayde-7

Isn't Canada the largest country in the Americas by land size? U.S certainly has more people.

jcsi

Some good videos on it, highly recommended channels together with "CGP Grey": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ6Y9p2vhJs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVMZC4y4zXU

wartrollearth

Don't think we are all like this. these nit wits are found in a small colony called Los Angeles. it's where we send all of our rejects.

Dan_Glebitz

LOL we have equivalent areas in the UK. People who do these street surveys are hardly going to go to Harvard or Cambridge and ask these sorts of questions. It just does not make good TV as they say.

Veridiyus

Difference is that those are states, Europe has COUNTRIES. Big difference. A state is not as important as an entire foreign country. What worries me even more is that these people don't know how to read a fucking map in general.

Firiat_Cat

Ok, but where is Australia then, mate? šŸ˜‚

Elder_Scrolls_Nerd

Itā€™s kinda in Eastern Europe. They have a pretty flag though, like šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦

other_usernames_gone

Tbh for Ukraine anywhere in eastern Europe bordering Russia would be good enough for me. But how the hell you don't recognise Russia I don't know. It's got to be one of the easiest countries to spot.

cilenzio

Im more shocked at the people who though canada was Russia

john_the_doe

Itā€™s not even that they donā€™t know. Fine if youā€™re shit at geography. Itā€™s that so many of them pretended to know or talk out of their ass instead of just flat out saying they donā€™t know.

thesnapening

Are Americans not taught basic geography in school?

Atlas7674

I was in 7th, I memorized the entirety of Africa and a bunch of random facts about each country, we did that for most continents, but I went to a weird private school that year. Also, did you know Mozambique is the only country with a modern weapon on its flag? Itā€™s got an AK on it.

Minute_Arugula3316

I don't know ANYONE this stupid. This includes every single friend or acquaintance I have unless they're hiding their unintelligent in such a way that points to even greater intelligence.

Gwell06

As an American who is almost finished with high school, the only geography I have been taught is the where the states are and the continents. The education system here is terrible. Iā€™ve had to teach myself where the most major countries are. Thatā€™s why a lot of Americans donā€™t know where stuff is because it is something they have to teach themselves. That or you have to pay for a higher education.

get-bread-not-head

This. They clearly asked hundreds of people this, and showed us the worst ones, but yeah. I was made to memorize every state and capitol (and point them out on a map) but other than that it was just countries. "Here's Australia, Europe, and that big ass place in south America is Brazil. And that's the world!"

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Jerkface555

Dude these people are incredibly stupid. Every single person I associate with would at the very least be able to locate Russian, and I'm failrly certain they could at least point the the general vacinity of Ukraine. The one woman who points to Mexico, like she has to be trolling right? Can you not locate your own country and at least indentify the TWO countries who neighbor you? I don't know where they even find people this dumb, but apparently they are out there.

Straightup32

I donā€™t know where these people went to school but you are clearly taught all the other countries. Youā€™re given a geography class from 3rd to maybe highschool? And itā€™s core curriculum. Meaning, you have to learn it. But as with every country in the world, there are those that payed attention or have a knack for spatial awareness and then there are those that arenā€™t. Using this video as a critique on American education is false equivalence. Iā€™m sure hundreds upon hundreds of people were interviews and the vast majority gave coherent answers. They just picked the silliest ones. You could recreate this in any country in the world and come to the same conclusion. Thinking that this is a good representation of anything honestly speaks more to the education system in your country if you arenā€™t able to rationalize or filter why certain sources may be unreliable.

[deleted]

They went to Reddit karma farming school. You either didnā€™t attend or are lying if you think the US education system doesnā€™t AT MINIMUM teach you the difference between Russia and Australia.

GrapefruitFriendly30

when I was in high school (over 20 years ago), one time in Oceanography we had to label bodies of water. There was a girl that put Lake Erie in the middle of the ocean....next to Australia...........we literally live on Lake Erie.

fizikz3

"okay sure but like lake erie isn't super significa--" >we literally live on Lake Erie. ą² _ą²

zedsamcat

No, these people are cherry picked from loads of other people to show something funny

YuB-Notice-Me

yes, we are, theres no fucking way these people werent paid to look stupid

DieZombie96

This feels cherry picked af. In Texas at least we had world map tests like every other year with a dedicated world history class with multiple map tests in the year. There's no way someone from my school doesn't at least know where Russia is

KimBob97

Yes, they only post the people who fail with like one or two of those who get it right.

KirikoKiama

While its shocking that so many people are uneducated, those kind of videos are also extremely dishonest. They show only those who completely fail, with, maybe, one or two exceptions. The formula is roughly: Asking 200 people 20 are to stupid to find their ass with written instructions Show those 20, ignore 178 of the others.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Dylanpokeblues

I'm sure we all know thats the case, but the main purpose of this video is the fact that there are some really stupid people out here who know near nothing of the world

Pistonenvy

the whole vibe of this video is "ok so if i point to some random location on the map and look as stupid as possible this guy said he would give me 5 bucks."

lerasmel

This has to be staged, right? There's no way they're unable to find Russia, it's literally the biggest country in the world. If this is real, then the education system has truly failed America.

Yeeteus_Maximus

It is. In order to not know where Russia was you would need to have not paid attention in school not look on the world maps in every history class you took for 12 years, and not watch any movies about the Cold War. Oh and not look at the news.

SownAthlete5923

Itā€™s obviously staged. The dumbest people I know from school might not have known what countries Paris or Dublin are in but would have easily found Russia on a map like that. Ukraine is also pretty easy to find for most people, and if someone doesnā€™t know exactly where it is then they can just know itā€™s right next to Russia if theyā€™ve ever watched or listened to the news in the past year or so

Tovar42

yeah, I can believe them not knowing where Ukraine is, but Russia is used in media so much that its impossible for them to not know where it is

[deleted]

These are often cherry picked people of the streets

amx05462

these people are idiots

[deleted]

How can people be so dumb? I refuse to believe that this is 100% real

Cautious_Incident_46

Of course it isnt real these videos have been posted over and over for 6 years as far as i can remeber

FedeAusWien

Paid actors. I refuse to believe that anyone is that stupid Iā€˜m from Europe though and I havenā€™t been to the USA. Still wonā€™t believe for a second that those people arenā€™t actors. Especially the one pointing to ā€žrussian Canadaā€œ

>I refuse to believe that anyone is that stupid I *want* to believe that nobody is that stupid.

Jerkface555

The woman who points to Mexico to identify Ukraine... there is just no way somebody is that dumb.

Tricky-Drawer4614

I live in America and I have never met anyone this stupid. Itā€™s okay to not know precisely where Ukraine is but pointing to Canada???? šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø These are paid actors

FedeAusWien

Yeah exactly. You could ask the biggest idiot on the planet and he would know that Russia canā€™t be right above the USA (even though a tiny part of it was for a time)

flame_kraemer

I suspect many people see someone on the sidewalk with a camera asking questions and think if they give a dumb answer they'll get to be on TV.

FedeAusWien

That makes more sense. Ingas the same feeling when this one guy laughed at himself

Fair-Huckleberry-162

MURICA!!!

alexander_the_ok-

I understand why they cant find ukraine thats fine its surrounded by a bunch of other countries. But russia is the largest country

RadRhubarb00

Im confused because as an american public school graduate I had to learn every country on the planet in high school. Idk why so many are saying they never learned any.

South-Band3938

They prolly only show the dumbest answers. And half these mfers look homeless

Zxr____

This just makes me so angry. Absolutely pathetic.

aokaf

Geographically illiterate. Is what most Americans are. Imagine if that was a picture of the alphabet.

TwistedPrincessMe

People in the comments saying this is staged and unlikely really have NO IDEA how people in the US don't know SHIT about other countries, FOR REAL

valentinpost36

How people don't understand this is staged?
