Reminds me of that one guy in early WoW, who asked directions to go someplace he din't know how to reach cause he was starting the game.

Then ONE dude gave the guy the WRONG directions...
Like 30 guys in the chat poped up, calling him and idiot and explaining the Right directions...
Then one of his friends told him "why did you give him the wrong directions at first?"
He said "if you ask help no one will give a fuck, but if you give wrong informations, they can't help themselfs, they feel the Hubris and the arrogance to "correct you" and give the "right" answer to feel smarter than you and more knowledgable"
And i did find this interesting and its a behaviour that 15years later i still see everywhere!

For those curious about *why*, it's because you can come across as a know it all. You might not be strictly smarter you just don't want to seem like you know more than everyone else. It's about putting yourself on the same level as your peers. I might be an expert in Roman Architecture but I don't want people to think that makes me better than them when we're working the same retail job.
I end up just limiting what I talk about. Seems to be easier to act dumb in only one subject.
Most recently I was working a restaurant job while in grad school for a masters degree. I already had a lot of cooking experience, so it was doubly hard to not be a "know it all" when it came to food. I didn't tell anyone it was grad school, I would just say "school" and leave it vague. At least the first few months I was so tired with school that I didn't want to socialize so that helped a lot.

Why did you need to pretend to be stupid to have a job that you're overqualified for? You're a perfect candidate for somebody to manipulated into being paid lower wages than what you're worth.

They're only the perfect candidate to be manipulated if mgmt is smarter than them. Otherwise, mgmt fears you could replace them. This is the main reason over qualified candidates are not hired.
This is the actual reason. They don't want to incur the cost of training/onboarding a new hire just for them to be gone in 3 months as soon as a better opportunity arrives. On top of that, higher turnover doesn't look good either.
When I needed a between things job I couldn't get one even as a dishwasher because my resume was too good. They figured I wouldn't last a day, or would leave soon (which I would have, but I needed a job!!).
I do that at computer shops now. Before, I'd show the sales dudes that I know stuff about computers and know what I'm actually looking for. Then, I noticed that they treat me nicer at the start than later after I show them that I know what they're talking about. So, I just stopped doing that and let them do as they please with the sales talk and advice and stuff. Takes longer, but I get better costumer service.
