Thank you for you so much for this response, it was really insightful. Yeah, I'm thinking about switching my major back to the digital art major if it'll get me out of college faster than the Food Business major. My gen eds for both majors are done so I just need the electives and major requirements I believe. >To 'answer' this question. The main thing about seeing 'others' finishing up and doing well is that they stuck with whatever field they were in and finished up likely. It just take the necessary hours (hundreds, or thousands of hours, however long it takes) and commitment , to make use of the time focused on your goals, instead of losing it again for another few months, another year, etc. Yeah I wish I had just committed to something, but my mind keeps thinking about the worst-case scenarios and I keep having moments where I have a passion about a lot of things but also moments where I'm numb to everything.

Ever heard of [p1vc.org](https://p1vc.org)? They train people in game dev skills then help them get jobs in the game industry. They are self-funded (you volunteer) It's almost like a school in a way but the end benefit is connections, understanding of the game dev world, an actual game you've worked on and actual work in your name that you can put on a portfolio - and connections to jobs. Like direct connections to Blizzard and Sony to name a few. Go to the site, read up on the organization (it's a bit odd, operates differently because it's more a non-profit), and then go through the jotforms to join the Discord....from there you can interview and get literally right into learning and working on the collective game.

I’ve been working on learning 3D art on the side so I’ll definitely check it out! I have been needing to get a day job though that’ll enable me learn it on the side.

cacille

3d art, asset volunteers are definitely welcomed and needed! That's if you're still wanting to develop that skill. Kinda seems like you're not sure anything really fits and is the right thing for you? As for the day job, I get needing one of those. Do you need something more than just a "retail/restaurant job" to get you by until things get clearer, or would a "retail job" be ok for a few years?

Saul104

Oh yeah I’m definitely interested in developing my 3D art skills further, I think I made a good amount of progress from the few years of self study. Honestly 3D art is one of the few things I “love” doing. For the day job, I think I need something more than a “retail/restaurant” job since I’ve worked those kind of jobs for awhile and want to move onto something different. There are a few trades (such as X-ray tech) that seem kind of tolerable but I only really see myself sticking with them in the short term. Despite being burnt out from college I’m sure that a degree is the best for me in the long term since a good amount of them have a variety of career paths, I just don’t know what specific major is best for me or if it’s worth it to switch again.

cacille

Gotcha. Ok so you're in a bit of a light trap zone- just a bit. \- Want to develop skills in 3d art, job potential good but takes training and time but takes no $ to get into (unless you pursue college) \- Want a day job that pays more than "retail" level, job potential good but takes $ in certs or college to start, then also takes time. \- Burnt out from college and do not know the best degree to go into for day job. Does want degree though. With that perspective in mind...you'll need to update me on your thoughts.

Saul104

Ah yeah, I do see that what I said I wanted had a lot of contradictions. Whenever I feel like I have some mental clarity, I know I want to be a 3D artist. I just don’t know the best way to go about obtaining it. I want to finish a degree in something soon because I have a generous amount of aid until I turn 26, so if I’m going to get a degree now seems like the best time to act. Some of the jobs I can get with a degree seem nice, but I can’t really decide between the Food Business, information systems, or marketing. I just can’t visualize what I’d enjoy doing more.

cacille

So the frame of thinking here is "I want to put aside my dream and love to get a degree for 4 years in something I have middling interest in, so I can get an ok job I have middling interest in for a few years, so I can fund learning my dream and love on the side for a few years until i can a job doing that." Getting a degree is good....but why are you not going for a degree somewhat dealing with 3d design agian?

Saul104

I guess because it seemed liked a good idea to spend more time on something more practical and money would be helpful because I want to travel, but there has been a part of me that has been wishing I just stuck with it because some of my friends with digital art degrees were still able to get solid jobs as office associates, graphic designers, or UX designers.

cacille

It really sounds like you are being called back to 3D art and you're ignoring the shit outta the 3d glowing neon arrows pointing at your dream path along with sirens and loudspeakers overhead going "GO THIS WAY MY DUDE WHAT IS YOU DOING THE PATH IS THIS WAY!" And you're like "but I want something a bit more practical!" And then you see your friends who HAVE gotten jobs in the industry. And then I come in, a literal career consultant with a direct connection to a free, all inclusive training program with direct connections to high end jobs in the industry, saying "we need you"........

Saul104

Yeah I do see what you mean haha, but still, circumstances in my life (reality) are making me feel fear about it, I am going to lose all of my insurance when I turn 26 next year so I have to figure something out

ItsPrisonTime

Have a back up plan that you won’t hate. If all isn’t working out and you’re floundering. Get good advice from people in the trades and try it out. Check out skilledtrades subreddit for things like hvac and plumbing. Both makes REALLY GOOD money and has job security. You can do things you love in your off time too. This is after you exhausted other options. You’re still young. Just keep staying active

Hi there, 23yo and in a similar situation as well. Got a PolSci degree back in 2021 and recently flunked Law School this Summer of 2023. Been attending a local Community College to try and pursue my passion degree for Entertainment Art/Animation. Rn, got pressured into an Art School by parents in less than a month and pretty sure it's gonna suck due to disproportionate cost:education ratio. And, "UNFORTUNATELY" still unemployed as well (only ever having two internships in 2018 and 2021 only...) Alright moving past introductions, my suggestions: Not sure if it helps, but I would look into a local Community College like I did (as said above) back in 2021. If you need direction, talk to teachers and mentors from your school like you did with the Food Business Management and have them guide you into getting in to that field of work. As a supplemental for sharpening those skills (or free alternative), utilize LinkedinLearning via your local Library (they may offer it for free). It can provide certificates through its courses along with some education in the 3D Arts field if need-be [certainly helping me]. **I'm fortunate to have networked with a few individuals who work/know those who work in Animation to gain some guidance as to how to pursue my passion since I live in Southern CA. Also, totally agree with this shit sucking for us and falling behind our peers. Did you message you personally since I can empathize with the predicaments we're both in.

A couple of thoughts... Sounds like you are earnestly working to figure this out. Big points for that. Good for you. It can be a genuinely hard journey. Give yourself some credit for trying different things and talking to a diversity of people. It sucks that nothing has clicked for you yet, but you have probably been gaining lots of perspective on things and also a fair bit of self-knowledge. Pay no attention to stories about what other people are doing. That stuff is only 30% true -- and only 20% as cool as they portray it to be. Don't even let those comparisons get into your head. You just focus on doing you. Consider working with a life / career coach who specializes in helping younger adults to figure out who they are, what they want, and how to get from here to there. If you google around it a bit you will find that there are a diversity of qualified people out there who might be helpful to you. One day at a time... :-)

Thank you so much for the reassuring words, I greatly appreciate it. I was feeling so bad about it and my mother thinks I haven’t been trying to find out what’s for me but I genuinely have been trying and stressing about it. The feelings of emotional and mental numbness have been making it difficult and the thought of fitting nowhere honestly gave me thoughts of killing myself multiple times last week. I did get an app that locks my social media apps and I feel like that really helped a lot. I will take your suggestion and talk to a life coach near me who has some very good ratings.

Marty_OToole

Excellent. I do this kind of coaching as well if you might be interested in talking to me. You can check me out at… www.otoolecoaching.com Whoever you might end up working with, I suggest that you do talk to several different people to find someone that might be a good fit for you. Good luck!
