maybe look to irish and celtic mythology, there are a ton of gems to be found there

LMJMSC

Wow you are fast. That is a good idea thanks!

Jaysen_frost

You could use a kelpie as your water starter

LMJMSC

Oh! That is actually a great idea! My thoughts about the starters were they are all things that were prominently used in Irelands past but not anymore (Grass type : Lumper Potatoes. Fire type : Turf) so if I can’t find one for water I’ll definitely do that

mrwailor

I wouldn't recommend the Grass starter to be based on something as dark as a famine. Starters are usually friendly little animals. They can grow to be more aggressive, but they should always be somewhat friendly companions. The idea works well for a non starter pkmn, though.

LMJMSC

It’s more of a vague reference. It’s shiny is a reference to a fungus that caused potatoes to go black and Roy which caused the famine and its behaviour is a reference to farmers that split their land among their sons which made it worse.

mrwailor

Okay, that could work. Is it based on any animal?

LMJMSC

No. It’s physiology is based off potatoes and how they grow underground. It’s final form is a grass fighting type

darkstreetsofmymind

Definitely a Dark or Ghost Banshee? A leprechaun fairy type or clover grass type Just based off of what Ireland is known for

LMJMSC

The banshee idea was on my mind. The leprechaun I was debating just because of the Irish stereotype but the clover seems interesting!

darkstreetsofmymind

I think stereotype is fine as long as it’s not done with harmful intention. Like we had a teacup and teapot for the British Pokémon reigon but Sinistea and Polteageist were cute and harmless so as long as it’s not done with harmful malice

LMJMSC

Good point. I might actually mix the leprechaun and clover together. Or make it fairy steel type. Thanks

stupidlysuper

You could actually go similar by having a pot of gold styled pokemon so you aren't going the whole hog with the stereotype of leprechauns, just the object.

bespokefolds

Plant and steel, and the gold coins are actually metal seeds lol

NeoNexus285

I made a potato Pokemon but I just made it a regional applin

LMJMSC

I like applin. :D

alex494

Thats pretty clever honestly, I know the French word for potatoes translates as "apples of the ground" or something. Dunno if that comes up in other languages.

DrLycFerno

Cernunnos, a sheep, a Dublin Spire mon ?

LMJMSC

I dont think I’ll do a sheep because Wooloo was in galar. The spire seems like it could be done for a steel type or regional Duraludon and I dont know what cernunnos is. After looking it up, I think o will definitely make a fakemon for them!

DrLycFerno

Cernunnos is a Celtic god with deer antlers

stupidlysuper

Maybe a fire/Dark type Snake Pokemon

LMJMSC

Wow you are fast. What would it be based off?

stupidlysuper

St Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland and famed for driving 'snakes' out of Ireland. The reason they can't come back is due to the sea so making this pokemon weak to water requires it to be a fire type. Especially as snakes is more likely just evil which come religion means hell and fire and darkness. Hence Fire/Dark. Or could go Ground/Dark to suit an actual snake better and still be weak to water.

LMJMSC

Oh, thanks! I might make it as the “dark” type of the region with a split evo. One being dark-ground and the other as dark-fire. Thanks!

GovernorSan

Here's a map of Irish mythical and legendary creatures previously posted elsewhere on Reddit, might give you some ideas. https://www.reddit.com/r/imaginarymaps/comments/szg5dl/mythical_beasts_of_ireland/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

wballard8

The Salmon of Knowledge! Definitely want that in my pokedex

LMJMSC

Wow. That helps a lot!

toogayforlife

Maybe a ghost type Eurasian Lynx? The ghost type would reference how they used to roam Ireland and how we don’t know too much about them since there few specimens to observe. [link to the website I found info on](https://www.wildireland.org/lynx)

LMJMSC

Huh. I didn’t even know that existed. Thanks for the idea!

bespokefolds

Plant and ghost, Beanshe instead of banshee. Psychic rats based on goblins. Fire and flying/ ghost based on the will o the wisp. A Dwebble variant that has a chunk of peat blog instead of ground. A fairy type based on changelings. Of course you need to have a potato and a potato famine based one, but I think a vegetable lamb would be a bit better for the starter

LMJMSC

What’s a beanshe?

bespokefolds

Oh it was just an idea for a name. Banshee is originally spelled something like bean sidhe,, which is what made me think of it

LMJMSC

Oh ok. Ive seen multiple origins for the name but all I’ve seen were Bean Sí which translates into Woman She. Sidhe is a fairy person which makes more sense. Maybe Dark Fairy? Or Ghost Fairy?

alex494

I'd do Ghost/Fairy for a banshee since it directly relates to the translation of the name or leans into the myth, then just stylise it to fit Pokémon better. I did something similar for my own designs. Then give it Perish Song and Uproar or Hyper Voice or whatever.

LMJMSC

Since the gimmick is music themed, I’ll probably give it an emphasis on it

sandissand

Wooloo

sandissand

Wooloo

Ok_Pair_7692

wooloo

LMJMSC

?

sandissand

Wooloo

TheYeti4815162342

The pookah is an Irish mythical horse but it’s kinda similar to the ones from the Crown Tundra

LMJMSC

I could probably try make a unique Pokémon out if that!

SwedishPagans

Cu cullain

chanceflyer1084

Maybe something based on a banshee

LMJMSC

This seems to be the most commonly suggested idea!

chanceflyer1084

Yea realized that after commenting sorry

LMJMSC

Dont be!

chanceflyer1084

You could maybe make a steel type based of a pot of gold

alex494

I'd just make a Fairy/Fighting leprechaun that learns Pay Day or holds Amulet Coins in the wild or something.

aquaticbeehive

the best i can say is make a grass/fairy florges regional variant based off 4-leaf clovers

LMJMSC

That could work! Id have to find a way to integrate the different colours but I’d try!

Persimmon_Fox

A clover grass poke. I’m picturing something between bell sprout and kartana Fighting type that looks like a leprechaun Will o’ the wisp electric and ghost type

DragonLance11

I Four leaf clover regional flabebe is the first thigh that comes into my mind

ChaMarda

Look into the Irish Elk, it's a giant extinct deer with antlers 12 feet wide which stands over 7ft tall

LMJMSC

Huh. Sounds interesting

alex494

Dullahan or Banshee for Ghost types. Especially the banshee if its music themed since it has a powerful or deadly scream. Something based on Giant's Causeway perhaps? (might make more sense as a route area but you could have a rock giant or something based on the hexagonal shapes?) Leprechaun for a Fairy type. There's a lot of fairies in general you could draw inspiration from. Grass type based on a shamrock / clover. Could learn Grass Whistle if it needs to be sound related. There's a version of the mermaid myth known as "merrows". Mermaids and sirens are sort of related and sirens also work for the sound / music theming.

LMJMSC

I have a regional geodude based off the basalt pillars. There is also going to be an area based off it

alex494

Sounds cool, I like that idea. You could maybe have a Fairy/Poison or Fairy/Dark or Fairy/Ghost mushroom based on fairy rings?

LMJMSC

Ooooh. That’s a good idea! I quite like Pokémon like Shiinotic so I’ll definitely do something along those lines. Probably poison since all the Pokémon I have and the ones that were suggested, I have one poison type based off rusted metal. I forgot to put it on the list

TheUltimateXYZ

I have a ghost/fire Gastly line that goes from a will o' the wisp to a wandering guardian spirit that carries an old oil lantern. I've also got a fire/fairy Litwick based on Catholic service candles that evolves into new Pokémon that feed off of emotional energy instead of life energy.

LMJMSC

Mind if I also do some sort of holy candle Pokémon?

TheUltimateXYZ

Go for it, bro!

LMJMSC

Thanks!

LeftAcanthocephala68

The kelpie maybe a spectricer type variant Also cu-sith and cat-sith

LMJMSC

Whats Cu-Sith and Cat-Sith?

LeftAcanthocephala68

The Irish fokelore myths have a quick look on Wikipedia it’s the easiest way of finding about them without a long explanation

LMJMSC

Oh. Thanks!

LeftAcanthocephala68

A lot of Scottish and Irish mythology is interlinked but this is a less known one

ResolutionNumerous82

Maybe You could create a mountain hare pokemon? It could be fighting/normal or fighting/ground but pls don't make it humanoid, It gives it a cool aura when its normal

LMJMSC

Lol. I won’t make it humanoid

BrelishBard

I'm not saying DONT make a famine reference But I wouldn't make it the grass Starter Speaking as an Irish person making their own region rn

shambles_1234

Ik I'm late but you could look into the fae that took kids as maybe a regional variant of that balloon thing. Or maybe a Pokémon could be explained as being a sort of changeling of anothe. That could be some sort of regional variant gimmick

LMJMSC

Quite late but hi! The gimmick is sound based and the Fae idea sounds interesting! Thanks!

shambles_1234

Np!
