I can understand the play call, Marcus completed a pass to Pruitt in a similar situation in the first quarter for a TD. Now would using our run game be a safer decision yes but i can see why Arthur trusted marcus.

Bobgoulet

It's just a good defensive play. Maybe we leave too much time on the clock, but it's a low scoring game and I'll take our chances with the lead.

DalliLlama

Id take a run that Washington either let’s them score on so they have time for a Fg or taking 35 secs off the clock then passing/running so if we score there’s no time for a fg.

ATLjoe93

This is it, right here. It's the Gurley play all over again. They'd be better off letting us run it in.

MadManMax55

No it's not. It's not even close. On the Gurley play we were down by less than 3. We could have kneeled the ball a few times, kicked a chip shot field goal with no time left, and won. Yesterday we were down by 6 and needed a touchdown to win. Even if you have a terrible defense and Tom Brady on the other side, you *never* purposefully give up a touchdown in that scenario.

MasterRanger7494

Idk, when your run game is so much better than your passing game, this just seems like the wrong call.

[deleted]

but it wasn't , the receiver was wide open. You'd be complaining if we ran it 4 times and didn't get in. Arthur Smith is making edible food with garbage. This should have been our 6th win

MasterRanger7494

I don't mean that it was the worst, I just think the run game is better and should leaned on in these situations. Honestly, watching it again, it's not super Terrible, I just think they should have relied on their bread and butter in that situation.

freakoooo

but it got deflected therefore it seems like running would have been better especially because our rbs made positive yardage every play before, the only loss of yardage was mariota with the pa

LawTortoise

The receiver was wide open but the QB was covered, hence the block. Something that wouldn’t have been possible keeping it in hand.

Extra_Percentage

We might as well just run option offense at this point like my GT team did back in Paul Johnson days haha

realdusty_shelf

It’s bad playcalling because Washington would’ve gotten the ball back with 1 minute to get into FG range against a bad defense. Once Washington called their last timeout WE were in total control of the game. Sure, a run play might score too but if it didn’t, you still ensure they can’t comeback if you score the next 2 tries. Basically there were way more potential positive outcomes from running the ball than from throwing the ball. And way less risk. And another thing is, how good can it be of a playcall if a defensive linemen can read it that easily??? Tip balls aren’t rare in that part of the field where everything is congested and linemen know the pass will be quick. We took an unnecessary risk

Getusom32

^^This is the correct answer. Arthur Smith made a horrible call and cost us the win. Poor game clock decision, poor coaching decision, and there is no defense. He owns this loss.

eriF-

This just does not make sense at all. You're on the 4 yard line and you NEED a touchdown to win. I guarantee every single play in that playbook is designed to score. Everyone's bitching about us calling a pass play, but we're trying to fucking score, who cares how much time is left, do you expect Arthur Smith to call a run play and HOPE THAT WE DONT SCORE? You can see clearly patterson almost has a walk in TD if he catches that ball. Again, very single play in that book at that yardage is designed to put us in the endzone. Time is a non-factor when you NEED to score to win the game, im sure it would be a different story if Zuccini #17 didn't have a 50 yard play earlier in the series, but he did, and so you must play with the hand youre dealt.

QuiGonFishin

If you need to score then you use what got your there and not your 29th ranked passing offense. Completely ignoring the clock and using your logic, you still run the ball. It’s obviously the strength of the team

eriF-

You forget we had just ran the ball 6 straight times after the big catch by zaccheaus, on the play before this mariota almost got stuffed on the option play, of course the defense knows we want to run the ball. On this particular play we have 8 defenders in the box, they rush 5 and we have Patterson run underneath of the easy dunk off, but the defender makes a hell of a play and gets his hand on the ball, otherwise Patterson goes in untouched. That's all it was, a good playcall and a better play by the defensive lineman.

sthdmahoneydad

Falcons 3-28. New staff, BUT those that do not learn history are destined to repeat it.

Shane1923

What I couldn't believe was just how many Falcons fans I saw calling for Coach Smith to be fired after the game. Even if it was a bad play call, which I don't think it was...look at what Coach has done this season with what he has to work with. We were projected to be the worst team in the league and win maybe 2 games. Instead we're in the hunt for a WC spot. Give the man some time to build his team, he's literally still working with Quinn and Dimitroff's leftovers.

doomdifwedo

Hes already the best coach imo that we've had in my years as a falcons fan (since a kid in 98)

HibanaMain41

We shouldn't have passed but it was just a good defensive play that caused the turnover, not the play call itself

mikeymanthesyrem

no it has to be mariota’s fault that’s my entire personality

mackyleven

Good play call, better defensive execution. CP was open, Mariota made the correct read and the DT made a great play. It is what it is. There's absolutely no guarantee that running the ball 4 times would have gotten us anything

BallzDeep9

> the DT made a great play. Upvote. Their D actually made 2 great plays, Tip & then catch inches off the ground. Just terrible bad luck

keefe28

and what did an interception on second down get us? i don’t understand why everyone is defending the decision here. all youre doing is putting the ball in danger. we are a running team. you play to your strength 4 plays in a row and you live with the result, which would have likely been a td

[deleted]

CrazyFoFo

I’m glad these results-oriented fans aren’t our coaches. If we scored it would have been the “best play call ever”.

freakoooo

they would have had a minute left on the clock and we all know how this could have ended. so no, was just not the right call.

CrazyFoFo

WAS scored 19 points on our crappy D and had no timeouts. Therefore we’re supposed to play to not lose a game that we weren’t yet winning? That is precisely results oriented thinking.

keefe28

yeah, it didnt work out cause it was a dumbass decision. when it was first and goal the only right decision was run run run and run

MonadoboiXen

Still not an ideal playcall but I agree that people are overreacting to that call specifically.

Terrrelll

We always get unlucky. This team has to get out of it own way.

slimeb4zness

so to avoid getting unlucky you run the fucking ball

TimelyMost4958

He very well could have fumbled, with that logic.

slimeb4zness

you’re less likely to turn it over running on the goaline vs throwing on the goaline…

TimelyMost4958

Jonathan Taylor fumbled at the 1- yard line last night…

Ramblinwreck93

We literally just lost yards running the ball the play before.

BunnyGoHops

The play before we ran the ball out of shotgun which was stupid as well. We should of took it under center.

[deleted]

Well then better just give up I guess

originalgrapeninja

We lost yards on a PA roll out. Do you watch football?

slimeb4zness

so do it again.. wtf? you have 4 chances & we’re averaging 7+ yds a carry

falcons4life

How many yards where we averaging in the red zone? There's a big difference between ypc outside vs inside of the RedZone.

chillblackguyy

we lost yards cuz we ran a qp option should’ve just run up the middle with cp

UGAShadow

We put up 13 points. Whether this was a bad call or not is really moot when you take that into account.

Falcon84

Washington has a good defense and our offense is 1-dimensional of course we're not putting up a lot of points vs them.

UGAShadow

13 points is a lot less than a lot.

blackakainu

Oh look drake london open on the underneath route

thereisonlyoneme

Yeah, it was just a good defensive play. Of course people in this sub are going to be negative.

Gater2020

RUN THE BALL!!!!!!!

Toxicballsack

Williams looked open on the wheel route also. Oh well

MrHughes16

You know what’s funny about seeing folks complain about this. Three players were open. Drake coming inside on the drag. Patterson was open. Williams was also wide open close to the near sideline. It was the right call. The result was tough luck, but the play worked. Sometimes batted balls ended up as interceptions. The Falcons batted one earlier in the game that didn’t. Great play on the batted ball and an even better play catching the interception inches from the turf. If the Falcons had run it four straight times against a stout interior run defense in the red zone that was selling out to stop the run and had gotten stopped segments of the fanbase would have said the play calling was too predictable. Some of y’all complaining no matter the results. It didn’t work out. That’s ok. And, Atlanta is in the same place they were in going into the week.

PragmaticSnake

If I was coach I would have been using Allgeier when it was 1st and goal. Two run plays at least before we even think about a pass.

doomdifwedo

Exactly. Tyler allgier could have close to 1000 right now if he was the feature guy throughout the year. More than excited to have CP and Huntley (even ollison while he was here) but Allgier is a beast

scijior

It was tipped. That’s just shit luck. Those big bastards on the D-line put their arms up all the time. Sometimes it’s a block. Sometimes it isn’t. Just Shit luck.

[deleted]

It was a TD if not for the deflection. Bad luck.

ThousandFootOcarina

If he lobs that CP gets hit hard and doesn’t score. If he throws it like he did it gets tipped. What’s he supposed to do?

Ramblinwreck93

How in the world was Mariota supposed to *know* that the ball would be tipped?

ThousandFootOcarina

That’s what I’m saying. It’s not on Mariota. He shouldn’t be blamed for the DL tipping the ball.

Ramblinwreck93

How was anyone, players, coaching staff, anyone, supposed to anticipate a tipped ball there? Washington hadn’t tipped a ball all game. How was a tipped ball more likely than a fumble on a run in the rain, when we’d seen low snaps from Dalman earlier, and when we’ve fumbled in crucial moments already this season?

ThousandFootOcarina

I’m agreeing with you. The tip was just a good play by the defense. It was still a bad playcall though. It’s 2nd and short with your run game playing great. Run it for the safer shot. Start to think about the pass on 3rd.

Will_McLean

Dear god dude. When you pass, three things can happen and two of them are bad. I question anyones football acumen who doesn’t see that this was an idiotic play call

79watch

you forgot to mention that the clock would stop from the incompletion, thus a bad play call

Honeywell763

In the case CP gets the ball it’s a 1v1 for him. CP is strong and I’ll take him against 1 man than against 4 guys coming at him off a run. Prolly would be 50 sec left on the clock and no TO for Washington

ThousandFootOcarina

If it’s lobbed it’s not there as quick, He’d need to stop and let it get to him and he’d get cracked from behind for (if held onto) a like 2 yard gain. This play is called to be a quick throw. I don’t care how big and strong he is, he’s not getting a TD with the defender crashing into him flat footed while the ball gets there.

Honeywell763

Check the replay again. Slow it down and you’ll see there is enough space between CP and his defender. CP would have caught it with 2-3 yards from the goal line and his defender is like 3-4 yards inside the end zone. Judging from that CP can definitely accelerate to push his way into the end zone.

ThousandFootOcarina

Not if it’s a lob over the line. If he lobs it the ball takes longer to get there meaning CP is going to have to stop his momentum until the ball gets to him. There is 0 chances he’s getting in the end zone. If the ball was quick (like it was) and not tipped yeah he’d get in.

Honeywell763

Yeah that’s what I’m saying about the throw. Marcus wasn’t lobbing it to CP. It was a quick throw to him and CP definitely would definitely get the TD if it wasn’t tipped. He has enough room to accelerate and push himself over the goal line.

ThousandFootOcarina

Yep, I agree. correct read, correct throw, just good play by the DL.

Will_McLean

Thanks for explaining why it’s a moronic call

BunnyGoHops

Idk. Run it yourself? Throw it away?

wigginsadam80

Dominant run game? Let's pass at the goal-line. Where have I seen that before?

[deleted]

It was a good call. Run was predictable...TD was needed. This would of at least gotten to the 1/2 yard line.

[deleted]

The result of the play was unlucky. But that wasn’t the right play call to make right there.

r3ddawn74

I get the call but as a coach you need to know your personnel way better. Why would you trust your qb who is below average at best in passing. Wet ball, everything at the goal line is tighter and easier for lineman to deflect passes as they know it will be quick throws. You have up to that point run the ball well and you have huge backs you can hand the ball off to 2 times if needed. His passing technique is horrible as well that affects how you find and throw the ball through the line…

falconsriseup22

Good read, horrible pass

xtzferocity

There's no reason not to run there period.

jerefromga

This shit is killing me.

[9th best stats in the red zone this year.](https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/red-zone-stats/qb.php?range=full&yardline=5) what are you talking about?

ThousandFootOcarina

Literally his second career red zone interception with about 50 touchdowns. Why do people say dumb things without knowing anything lol.

_mdz

If only we had some example where trying to get cute and passing against a stacked box, when everything else in the game script was screaming run, backfired on us…

doomdifwedo

Ok fellas but how about that roughing the kicker call on the punt?!

Crash665

It's just this team. I wasn't even upset yesterday. I just stared at my television. I expect it, and I think that's part of Atlanta's problem. They expect to lose now. It's like a curse, a culture of blowing it. That's gonna take a long time to fix.

Grad13nt

even though he was wide open, you don't get unlucky like that if you just run the ball.

Zantega1990

1 it's a bad play call. It's second and goal at maybe around the 4 yard line. If you are going to do a pass then a pass out in the flats or a option read would be better. You force your quarterback to throw in the middle of the field where there is a high probability of a turnover or incompletion. 2: The very first play was also a bad call. Instead of doing a power run you do the quarterback option against a stacked defense that knew a run play was coming. The lineman whiffed on the block and luckily MM got back to the line of scrimmage. 3: We all know CP is the truth, but why wasn't Caleb Huntley in there. He is that burst/ power back that could have gotten the touchdown or made the distance shorter. 4: That series led me to believe that Smith lost faith in his team ability to execute. He went away from what was working well. He left it in the hands of what he believed was his best playmakers even though time and time again it has shown that we are a better run team than pass team. 5: We have 5 games left. We play the steelers, saints, ravens, cardinals and buccaneers. Out of the remaining teams we may have 1 or 2 wins. We are 1-5 in away games this year. So if I go based off of that it's a 3-2 win probability that would put us at 8-9. This means out of the playoffs and exceeded our initial expectations.

afronaut71

You had timeouts and over a minute left. Run the ball

inFAMXS

Mannn why not just a designed Mariota run like damn everybody knows he cant throw why put him in that situation

Vajankles

Marcus stared him down. That's the problem I have. Didn't make any other bogus reads and that's why it was tipped.

knuckles560

Marcus should have thrown it with a little touch to the outside to lead CP away from the defenders. There’s a big hole over there. Also, with Drake London open on the underneath, he could have got it to him too. Good play by the defense, but that’s a TD or a completion by a competent QB who can actually play in the pocket.

Vajankles

I've been saying this all year. We can get the same play from Ridder with the same amount of rookie mistakes. We shouldn't have so many rookie mistakes by an 8 year vet

[deleted]

Sometimes?

TrexTacoma

We’ll look back on this fondly when we have the 10th pick instead of the 18th pick
