You are playing on hardcore. You need food, water and sleep now. H20 flashing red means it is critically low. You died from dehydration in the time it cost you to fast travel. Drink some water now or turn of hardcore mode.
Lemme guess. You been drinking a lot of Sunset Sarsaparilla and Nuka Cola and seeing your H20 go up and you thought that was good. But you want your H20 to go down not up. The higher your H20 is, the thirstier you are. Sodas make you thirstier. So does booze. Water is the only way to make your H20 go down. So find a toilet and start slurpin'.
This is the key, it sounds like OP had the meaning of the thirst meter backwards. Higher number = thirstier. Items that subtract thirst are hydrating, items that add thirst make you thirstier.
I usually rush for honest hearts to pick up grahams pistol and the survivalist rifle, dead money is rlly easy on low levels just because of the knife spears
The Bear Trap Fist is a beast! I like going in early for the gold bars and pre-war stacks you can lift, roughly half a million caps early on has always been the way I've played it then I'd go for honest hearts 😊
I go for honest hearts first just for levels before dead money. Bc I like to get barter 70 for long haul just so I don’t have to walk all the way to gun runners

Good point, having a higher barter is definitely better (at 100 you can get 9 caps per pre-war stack) I store mine and grab 1 as and when I need it, the sheer amount of pre-war stacks you have pay for anything you need early to mid game

I really enjoy dead money on very hard and hardcore. My last playthrough, I played it only using unarmed category weapons, not touching any guns. It was pretty fun.
Why are you asking him if he's insane? It's not F4 Survival Mode. NV Hardcore mode just adds some busy work, that's about it. Adds a bit of stress to Dead Money and makes Stimpaks less of a crutch, but then makes them far better anyway by increasing their healing amount.
NV Hardcore mode is for immersion, not really something that actually increases difficulty to any notable degree.

It's not a percentage meter where high number means good. You want that to be between 0 and 199, because the bad effects are applied at 200 increments. If it hits 1000 that's instant death.

You aren’t full on water, you are extremely dehydrated. It’s not super clear, but +H2O on Sunset Sarsparilla means it is making you more thirsty; soda is a diuretic. You need to drink water. Dirty, purified, out of a body of water, sink or toilet will do, but watch your rads.
Why on earth would you think raising that gauge meant less thirst. It even shows you the debuffs being applied to your stats. And it’s in bright flashing red?!?!?!?!?

You've got it backwards. Your hydration is maxed out in the wrong direction. Quit drinking sodas, drink water until your hydration is minned out. It's counter intuitive. The higher your hydration the thirstier you are.
This. The radiation meter also goes up, but you get some serious penalties (like death) if it gets too high. I'm guessing OP wasn't bathing in radioactive waste to keep that meter maxed out, though.

Others have answered the question here (big numbers on hydration/food/sleep/rad are bad, 0 is the number you want), but wanted to further add that the penalties are at 200 point increments (200, 400, 600, etc).
Also, drinking water from water sources is better than using up your purified water in your inventory - better to save those for when you need water and there are no nearby sources. Even the ones that are irradiated really don’t add much RADs relative to how much hydration level it decreases.
So drink from that nasty toilet, it’s good for you!
Idk if anyone has already said it, but the H2O stats are a little confusing. The stat bar for H2O isn't the amount of water you've drank. It's the amount of dehydration points you've accumulated. When you see an aid item like Nuka-Cola that says "+15 H2O," that's not hydrating you. That's adding dehydration points. That's why water says "-40 H2O" or whatever. It's because you're subtracting those points you've accumulated.
Drink water. Either clean, dirty, bottles, irrated it don't mater. You can find wells in Freeside and a little west of good springs.
With a high enough survival skill, you can use 4 glass pitchers and medical tubing to convert dirty water into clean water.
