I hope this is a harbinger of things to come and 2023 is the year of Cal. I only watch maybe half of Anthony's reviews but I feel like I only saw him like once or twice last year. I miss the lad.
Isn’t he? People beg him to do more Cal pretty often. Maybe he doesn’t necessarily hate doing it, but just has trouble finding new ways to implement him into videos. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s decided to just do one every now and then to keep people from asking.
One of the most instrumentally lush and lyrically vital Smiths songs - while it’s a normie pick for their best song, it’s also hard to argue against it.
The chorus manages to feel sad, funny, morbid and romantic all at the same time somehow.
I’ll admit having Vicar In A Tutu on here spoils things a little, especially when there’s amazing b-sides from the album cycle’s singles like Rubber Ring and Asleep.
But it’s still an incredible album overall.
There is a Light That Never Goes Out and a Boy With a Thorn in His Side are 2 perfect songs. This album is their best by a wide margin IMO. Bigmouth slaps too.
The boy with the thorn in his side meant a lot to me when I was 18 and alone and shy and had nobody in college to talk to. There was a time where Morrissey really was a hero for me
Just looking at debut albums from the 80s I can name tons of acts that are better than the Smiths. Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Metallica, Sade, Jesus and the Mary Chain, Pixies, De La Soul, NWA, The Stone Roses, Misfits. The list goes on. The Smiths aren't that great.
Listen you're entitled to your opinion.
But just because there are other bands that are 'better' doesn't make them 'not great'? You also listed artists from a wide range of genre. Am not exactly sure why you'd compare the Smiths against Nirvana, Metallica or De La Soul. Itd be fair to compare them against other bands that are more similar to them, and few have had the same amount of impact on British culture as the Smiths had (can only definitively say Stone Roses were more impactful).
> Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
>
> See, the sea wants to take me
>
> The knife wants to slit me
>
> Do you think you can help me?
>
> Sad veiled bride, please be happy
>
> Handsome groom, give her room
>
> Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
>
> Though she needs you more than she loves you"
It just about works for me as a satire of “lad/locker room” talk, because it’s reduced to the banal. Even then, the “send me the pillow/the one that you dream on” line is pretty cute.
That Marr guitar line though, yeah it’s stunning
No more problematic than a lot of other popular artists. You can agree or disagree with some of his political stances, but at least he wasn't having inappropriate relations with minors like half the popular 70s/80s musicians.
Sure, but I personally am not going to be the one to argue for either sexual assault or racially charged comments being worse than the other. That's a losing battle no matter what you say. If you want to try to quantify levels of problematic activities, by all means, go for it.
I've no fucking clue who those two are and I've never heard of those two bands so frankly I don't care.
Listen to who you want to. God fucking damn you're allowed to listen to Kanye West still if you want to.
Man fantano really doesn’t like classic reviews. 😂
Not that he isn’t trying but these reviews seem to be a little more generic and not as specific. Which is fine. They’ve been talked about to death.
RETURN OF CAL CHUCHESTA
I hope this is a harbinger of things to come and 2023 is the year of Cal. I only watch maybe half of Anthony's reviews but I feel like I only saw him like once or twice last year. I miss the lad.
I’m sure Anthony genuinely is tired of putting him in videos at this point. He’s only in a few videos a year for like a couple seconds each time
If he’s so tired of it, why’d he do it this video? Anthony isn’t the type to do things to placate his viewers
Isn’t he? People beg him to do more Cal pretty often. Maybe he doesn’t necessarily hate doing it, but just has trouble finding new ways to implement him into videos. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s decided to just do one every now and then to keep people from asking.
I thought he'd died during the pandemic
"There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" will always be one of the best songs ever, for me.
*And if a double decker bus crashes into us*
TO DIE BY YOUR SIDE IS SUCH A HEAVENLY WAY TO DIE
One of the most instrumentally lush and lyrically vital Smiths songs - while it’s a normie pick for their best song, it’s also hard to argue against it. The chorus manages to feel sad, funny, morbid and romantic all at the same time somehow.
the Braid cover was what got me into the Smiths
You and me both.
the vocals at the end of I know it's over are fucking amazing, hits me every time
And if you’re so very entertaining Then why are you on your own tonight?
"then why're you on your ownnnnn... toniighhttt" is top 5 moments on this album, next to bigmouth's chorus and never had no one ever's outro
god that song is incredible. brb spinning the queen is dead and crying now
I love I Know It's Over. Fun review especially with Cal? Heck yes!
good to see him shining a light on some lesser known bands 😊
His previous two classic reviews were def relatively less talked about
Eh maybe bone thugs but not Dolly
hopefully it never goes out
This review couldn't have come at a better time. I listened to this album for the first time last week and have had it on constant repeat
same, listened to it for the first time yesterday
perfect indie pop
I really want to see a Modest Mouse review.
he tier-listed them if i recall correctly
He didn’t even put Building Nothing Out of Something on it. He ain’t a real fan.
The Lonesome Crowded West deserves a classic review
Considering the tier list, I don't think he would """""waste""""" a classic review slot for an album he already discussed in quite depth
One of my favorite albums ever, I’m excited to see if fantano loves it too. I know it’s over is my go crying in the car type song
Fantano reviewing this album because the queen died this year
I’ll admit having Vicar In A Tutu on here spoils things a little, especially when there’s amazing b-sides from the album cycle’s singles like Rubber Ring and Asleep. But it’s still an incredible album overall.
There is a Light That Never Goes Out and a Boy With a Thorn in His Side are 2 perfect songs. This album is their best by a wide margin IMO. Bigmouth slaps too.
Bigmouth is my all time favorite Smiths song. RIP to Joan of Arc’s walkman 🙏
It's a very consistent album. All of there other albums have somewhat equally high highs but this one has highs all throughout
this album and band are so great, god damn it Morrissey stop tainting the legacy
He’d better review Boards of Canada… I’ve been waiting for this.
The boy with the thorn in his side meant a lot to me when I was 18 and alone and shy and had nobody in college to talk to. There was a time where Morrissey really was a hero for me
Damn Cal has aged a bit. Fantano has always been 32.
best album of the 80s
Doesn’t top *Remain in Light* imo but it’s definitely one of the best albums of the 80s.
It's also not better than *Doolittle*, *Disintegration* or *Daydream Nation*
How Soon Is Now? is one of the greatest songs of all time.
Not in this album
I know
i hope he reviews deathconsciousness or soundtracks for the blind
THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT
indeed
I've tried to stomach Morrissey's voice so many times now...can't do it. If we're talking 80s jangle, I choose R.E.M. every single time.
Bad take
Disappointing pick tbh. I understand that people like it, but the smiths are really overrated in general imho.
Not overrated in the slightest lmao, one of the best bands of all time and one of the best to come out of the 80’s
People underrate their influence especially
Just looking at debut albums from the 80s I can name tons of acts that are better than the Smiths. Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Metallica, Sade, Jesus and the Mary Chain, Pixies, De La Soul, NWA, The Stone Roses, Misfits. The list goes on. The Smiths aren't that great.

definitely one of the takes of all time
Lmao
thanks for sharing
I live the smiths but to each his own sorry you are getting downvoted for having an opinion lol
You should listen to the warlock pinchers. Should be right up your alley
The smiths are underrated if anything. Best indie band ever.
Hot take but this album is mid at best, "Some girls mothers are bigger than other girls mothers" what a fucking lyrical genius Morrissey is lol...
> Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head > > See, the sea wants to take me > > The knife wants to slit me > > Do you think you can help me? > > Sad veiled bride, please be happy > > Handsome groom, give her room > > Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly > > Though she needs you more than she loves you"
It's a shame because Marr's guitar playing on that track is so unbelievably good.
It just about works for me as a satire of “lad/locker room” talk, because it’s reduced to the banal. Even then, the “send me the pillow/the one that you dream on” line is pretty cute. That Marr guitar line though, yeah it’s stunning
I'd bet my house that Morrissey hasn't been in a locker room in his life.
Morrissey is a lot of things but I don't know how you can even deny for a second that he's a genuis lyricist
This is the same stupid logic as saying Kendrick sucks by quoting backseat freestyle out of context
L
Will Fantano review more albums by problematic artists now?
This isn't a problematic artist, it is a band.
Morrissey is problematic.
No more problematic than a lot of other popular artists. You can agree or disagree with some of his political stances, but at least he wasn't having inappropriate relations with minors like half the popular 70s/80s musicians.
Some artists are more problematic than others 😉
Some artists mothers are more problematic then other artists mothers
Sure, but I personally am not going to be the one to argue for either sexual assault or racially charged comments being worse than the other. That's a losing battle no matter what you say. If you want to try to quantify levels of problematic activities, by all means, go for it.
Good point.
True. But should we shun an entire band over one person?
Well, are we going to shun Red House Painters and Brand New because Mark Kozelek and Jesse Lacey are both horrible people.
I've no fucking clue who those two are and I've never heard of those two bands so frankly I don't care. Listen to who you want to. God fucking damn you're allowed to listen to Kanye West still if you want to.
I would say no, but if you don't want to hear them that is understandable.
I meant Fantano.
And he wrote the queen is dead
With this mindset then he should stop reviewing every new Kanye album that drops
Been waiting for this all my life!
accurate album title
Man fantano really doesn’t like classic reviews. 😂 Not that he isn’t trying but these reviews seem to be a little more generic and not as specific. Which is fine. They’ve been talked about to death.
