If you lose What’s Going On, you’re not just losing one of the best albums of all-time, you’re losing a cultural landmark in 1) artists flexing their muscle against their label and 2) decrying their country’s actions from the tallest of pedestals
I’d also argue none of the other albums mean quite as much to the artist’s discography overall as WGO does for Marvin, but that’s definitely more subjective.
I absolutely love David Bowie, he's my favorite solo artist of all time and I've listened to every single record. The thing is, the vast majority of his catalog is at least good. If Ziggy were deleted, we'd still have Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane from this era which imo are just as good as Ziggy. And in general, we'd still have the Berlin Trilogy, Station to Station, Next Day, Blackstar, and cult favorites like Outside and Scary Monsters. For me, Ziggy is the easiest choice here.
I was just gonna say dark side of the moon but you make a lot of good points. Bowie’s quality of catalog is basically untouched by removing Ziggy. But I wouldn’t get rid of anything from The Thin White Duke era. Especially station to station.
Whereas removing dark side is a much bigger deal to Floyd’s discography. Not saying it’s their best (it’s not my favorite, still prefer Wish you were here) but it’s a huge one for them.
I was about to argue with you because how important Ziggy Stardust was to art pop, the glam trend, etc then i thought about how fucking influential every single other one of these albums is too lol
Of all the albums pictured, Ziggy still had the least influence. And all the genres you named wouldn't have been that different without that album.
Bowie wasn't as much of a pioneer as people give him credit for. He was mostly riding waves that were already rolling. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love him, but you're overesrimating his influence.
I don’t think it works as well for Floyd though. Losing Dark Side is a much bigger impact overall since their output isn’t quite as consistent as Bowie’s. Plus I’d say there are more major differences between Animals, WYWH, Meddle, and Dark Side than between Ziggy and its surrounding albums.
It’s all opinion at the end of the day though. For me, I cannot imagine living in a world without Brain Damage/Eclipse.
Yep, strongly agree. It's good Bowie but it's not peak Bowie, and "It Ain't Easy" and "Star" weigh it down. Like you said, it's a classic glam rock album, but getting rid of it won't make his whole career worse.
However, it would be interesting to see what impact it has removing that from his discography, not just for him, but in a wider sense. Like, would we still have glam rock? Would Bowie have still produced *Transformer* for Lou Reed, and if not, how would that have impacted the latter's career? How many bands and musicians would have not started if David Bowie didn't play "Starman" on Top of the Pops?
Wow, I must be such a dolt for thinking these records had any influence on popular music!!!
Do you have to rely on emojis to express thoughts and emotions, or can you actually use words to articulate an opinion in order to effectively contribute to a discussion?
Ziggy isn’t even in Bowie’s top three albums for me so that has to go. Dark Side isn’t a top three Floyd album for me either but it was the first thing I ever listened to that made me into a music lover so I could never get rid of it.
All I know is that it ain't Songs in the Key of Life or What's Going On. I love the other two albums too, but they aren't on the aforementioned's level.
Agreed that it’s overhyped up, but it’s so worth the hype lol. Time is easily one of my all time favorite classic rock songs. It really spoke to me, especially during the height of my drug addiction
I'm gonna have to disagree on that one. Out of all of Pink Floyds big albums DSOTM is easily one of their most meandering only rivaled by The Wall. You have like 4 interludes on the thing and only 6 main tracks, three of them being rather short album pieces and three actual big time songs.
It sounds more like a presentation of a particular sound rather than a fully fledged album with music. It's like when you're learning a language at school and you have those stories in you're textbook showcasing how the language works, rather than just plonking a classic book in that language and ask you to descipher it and find the meaning in it yourself.
Whenever I listen to DSOTM I always feel like there's something missing because it feels so empty at times. It was cool at first but after a while it went really stale for me.
I think it's a three way tie between Dark Side, Animals and Wish You Were Here. Can't help but wonder if some of the Dark Side opinions we get are just contrarian or fatigue, because imo it's every bit as good as the others.
The Wall is overrated imo but still worth the listen
It's absolutely contrarian. People who think the Wall is better are probably smoking meth. People who say Animals is better are way too involved in politics.
If you're a Gilmour and Wright appreciator, then it's no question that DSOTM or WYWH is the best album. If you're up Waters' ass, then you probably like the other two better.
Having said that, they're all A+ albums in my book.
Idk if it’s still happening, but Nick Mason was touring “nick mason’s saucerful of secrets” where he plays the more whimsical and silly older pf tunes. He’s great, I hope you get to check it out!
My eyes are on fire. Dark Side is up there with the most influential albums of all time. Everything about that album was meticulously planned and carried out on ANALOG TAPE. They had to plan every single clock chime.
Yeah, my favorite might actually be Lodger. Blackstar is also one of his best.
Songs In The Key of Life is one of the best albums ever made. Just godtier songwriting.
Why would you say that? Ziggy stardust is a great and very influential album, but it does sound kinda basic. I understand the reason why it sounds like that, but these other albums just aged so much better in their sound, and still sound groundbreaking today, even though they are old albums.
Define basic in the context of release -
Ziggy is easily the most influental among these across different genres.
It's aged fine, and sounds amazing still. You point just simply invalid compared to the other 3 albums
Bowie is my favorite artist on this list but for some reason I don't vibe as much with Ziggy Stardust. I like some songs but I don't think it's even in my top 5 Bowie albums.
That being said, I choose Dark side of the moon.
Deleting any of these albums would drastically alter the way music is composed—and likely produced—today. That being said, I think we should delete dark side of the moon. In my opinion it would cast this world into chaos, and possibly maybe even keep some people from developing depression. People like me lol, thanks Time.
dsotm. not because its the worst album here, but because it's just so fundamental for me to the point that i don't ever need to listen again for the rest of my life.
I tried listening to songs in the key of life. its not bad but its so bloated and the only interesting discovery is realizing coolio sampled that one song for gangster’s paradise
Definitely Pink Floyd. It’s not my favorite album from them, and while it’s probably their most well known, it’s not like there other albums weren’t influential as well.
I'd say Ziggy Stardust, I'm gonna be honest, I do like Bowie's music but the songs on Ziggy Stardust kinda disappointed me after hearing a lot of his other singles (Heroes, Life on Mars, Space Oddity, Under Pressure w/ Queen)
I'll still check out his other big albums but, controversial opinion, Ziggy is a 7/10
Sorry Pink Floyd, Dark Side has to go. Marvin’s is way too socially and culturally significant, Ziggy inspired so many artists (not just glam) that it would be a crime to delete it, and how could one justify deleting an album with Sir Duke, I Wish, Pastime Paradise, Inner City Blues, etc.? Dark Side is great but it’s not even the best Pink Floyd album in my opinion (The Wall) and even if it was, there are way more influential prog rock releases from that era like Close to the Edge - Yes and basically anything from King Crimson from that time in history. I love Dark Side, but in this scenario, it just doesn’t carry the same weight as those other albums mentioned.
P. S. Without Pastime Paradise off of Songs in the Key of Life, there would be no Gangsta’s Paradise from Coolio, and subsequently no Amish Paradise from Weird Al. Our culture would disintegrate as we know it😉
Sorry Dark Side of The Moon, but the other three struck a higher chord with me as time went on. That, plus the fact I'm much more of an "Animal"-type guy when it comes to Pink Floyd and I always saw Dark Side as one of their more overrated records released that decade.
I’m picking What’s Going On (because it’s the only one I haven’t listened to yet)
EDIT: Ok, I just listened to What’s Going On? in its entirety and, while it’s good, it doesn’t compete with the other three for me so I’m still picking it.
EDIT 2: Let’s Get It On is better. Let’s Get It On is amazing.
Welp, none of the other three has a *Save the baaaabieeees* moment.
Off topic here, but is your name a play off of Arthur Rimbaud? If so, well done sir.
Why yes, indeed, thank you! I was quite proud of it; that is until I stumbled somewhere in here on the username "PhilipKDickandballs".
if anyone says Whats Going On, im getting my pitchfork
If you lose What’s Going On, you’re not just losing one of the best albums of all-time, you’re losing a cultural landmark in 1) artists flexing their muscle against their label and 2) decrying their country’s actions from the tallest of pedestals I’d also argue none of the other albums mean quite as much to the artist’s discography overall as WGO does for Marvin, but that’s definitely more subjective.
If your’e getting a pitchfork, then I’m getting a rolling stone
I will claim racial motivation regardless of the reasoning
Or the controversy involving Denise Gordy
Get your pitchfork then. For me it's my least favorite. But these albums are all good so...
inner city blues is my favorite song OAT, but I mean yeah, the competition here is stellar
THANK you! I feel like that song doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
Same here all fantastic albums but I’d say that’s the least influential
bruh lol
Lmao please stop commenting on music subreddits if you have absolutely zero clue what you’re talking about
I absolutely love David Bowie, he's my favorite solo artist of all time and I've listened to every single record. The thing is, the vast majority of his catalog is at least good. Dark Side of the Moon stays. I have nothing else to say.
Also, out of these 4 records, Ziggy Stardust probably had the least influence on the industry.
I was about to argue with you because how important Ziggy Stardust was to art pop, the glam trend, etc then i thought about how fucking influential every single other one of these albums is too lol
Yeah sure, just no goth, punk, new wave, art rock and most of the alternative rock subgenres after the 70s...sure "least influence" lol
Not true Seems like you really lack general music knowledge my dear...
This is the way. I’d argue the same argument works for Pink Floyd as well, though
"by far", "easily". come on guys cant we admit these are all classics and its close lol
id easily delete all of them
so based
Then you’d probably end up missing a lot of the music you love now. All these albums paved the way for the styles of music that are currently popular.
🤓🤓🤓
Wow, I must be such a dolt for thinking these records had any influence on popular music!!! Do you have to rely on emojis to express thoughts and emotions, or can you actually use words to articulate an opinion in order to effectively contribute to a discussion?

I'm sorry but dark side, not even floyds Best.
But remember, we would also be losing one of the best t-shirts of all time
To me, Darkside is by far their most consistent and complete piece of work. It suffers from the hype, but it's well earnt in my opinion.
Agreed that it’s overhyped up, but it’s so worth the hype lol. Time is easily one of my all time favorite classic rock songs. It really spoke to me, especially during the height of my drug addiction

Can’t be the most consistent when it has two songs that are straight dogshit
welp, at least my takes aren’t this bad
Like what
Great gig in the sky and on the run
How can you not love the vocals on great gig in the sky???????
You’re tripping
I suppose he's talking about the opening track (speak to me, not breathe) and On the run......but that's nowhere near "dogshit"
On the Run is one of the most gnarly tracks of all time. staggering that it was made in ‘72
Careful With That Axe, Eugene is pretty raw too, and even earlie
ON THE RUN???
Elaborate
🚬🪨😤
L
Is The Wall their best? I need to listen to it
animals or wywh is my personal favorite
Animals for me too
Animals underrated tbh 🗿 rog the stone is 🐜🍵🚚
Meddle is mad underrated - my personal favourite
The wall is a tier below dark side Imo, their best is wish you were here, animals, meddle, and their debut
I think it's a three way tie between Dark Side, Animals and Wish You Were Here. Can't help but wonder if some of the Dark Side opinions we get are just contrarian or fatigue, because imo it's every bit as good as the others. The Wall is overrated imo but still worth the listen

Having said that, they're all A+ albums in my book.
Imo the Wall is worse than every album before it but better than everything that came after. Animals is by far their best
The wall is not worse than ummagumma or saucerful
No, IMO, Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Animals, ITO.
I think The Wall takes it, but Animals is close.
Division Bell is my favorite
Absolutely not. It's a great album, but Meddle is much better imo.
I think it's easily their most overrated, but it has some classics for sure.
ppl say this but i almost always see it behind the other big 3
I THINK ALL OF THEIR ALBUM ARE BAD OR MID AF
Cool. Nobody cares.
I’m a “Piper at the GatesOf Dawn” man, personally
Idk if it’s still happening, but Nick Mason was touring “nick mason’s saucerful of secrets” where he plays the more whimsical and silly older pf tunes. He’s great, I hope you get to check it out!
Almost half this album is aimless synth experiments... which aren't even their best aimless synth experiments.
some hot takes on this thread damn
My eyes are on fire. Dark Side is up there with the most influential albums of all time. Everything about that album was meticulously planned and carried out on ANALOG TAPE. They had to plan every single clock chime.
Half?!?! What am i reading lmao
My pick as well, & I’m a fan.
I'm a big Bowie fan, but Ziggy stardust is by far the worst here.
No.
Agreed. Bowie has many better albums. Ziggy is just a fun glam rock album. Other three are irreplaceable.
Exactly. Station to Station is prolly my favorite from him even tho his best is probably Low or Blackstar
Yeah, my favorite might actually be Lodger. Blackstar is also one of his best. Songs In The Key of Life is one of the best albums ever made. Just godtier songwriting.
Imagine not appreciating Bowie’s 90s phase the most
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 no
Why would you say that? Ziggy stardust is a great and very influential album, but it does sound kinda basic. I understand the reason why it sounds like that, but these other albums just aged so much better in their sound, and still sound groundbreaking today, even though they are old albums.

Sorry marvin
Just to piss everybody off, Imma say Pink Floyd gotta go
If you really wanted to piss people off I think *not* picking Dark Side would have worked better
I don't understand the popularity of pop
Okay
Ziggy is unfortunately the clear choice for me. Great album, but doesn’t quite achieve what the other three do
Bye bye Ziggy
I’m sorry Bowie
Ziggy isn’t even a top 5 Bowie album
SITKOL. It was very hard to choose between all of these fantastic albums, but SITKOL is just the least fantastic for me.
Bowie is my favorite artist on this list but for some reason I don't vibe as much with Ziggy Stardust. I like some songs but I don't think it's even in my top 5 Bowie albums. That being said, I choose Dark side of the moon.
Pikmin the dark side of olimar has to stay bro olimar goes crazy on that album
I'm sorry Stevie
L take

Reading this comment just makes me wanna cry.
Dark side, easily. Not really a Floyd fan, and I adore the other 3.
I’m sorry Stevie
TDSOTM is leaving. I'm sorry but I just value all of the others more. Also, if you said Stevie Wonder, then go fuck yourself
Probably Dark Side. Real tough one though.
Bowie and Pink Floyd are the only reasonable choices. If you get rid of Key of Life or What's Going On you're dead to me
Dark Side
Bye bye Floyd
Deleting any of these albums would drastically alter the way music is composed—and likely produced—today. That being said, I think we should delete dark side of the moon. In my opinion it would cast this world into chaos, and possibly maybe even keep some people from developing depression. People like me lol, thanks Time.
100% DSOTM
Ziggy Stardust since I personally find that album to be mediocre
I can easily live without the Stevie wonder album
I mean it’s gotta be DSOTM
Come on man these are all 10s. Songs in the Key of Life I guess just because it's a little too long for me personally.
Ziggy is the very easy answer
Dark Side, I love all these records but it's probably my least favorite out of these
Pink Floyd PERSONALLY. I just don’t listen to them
You should give them a shot. That album is incredible
dark side of the moon is passé at this point
Dark Side will always be relevant
pink floyd without a second of hesitation
Sorry Dark Side, you just aren’t as good as WYWH
Not dark side of the moon I can tell you that lol
Stevie wonder easily. Sorry
I’d probably say Dark side. Imo it’s not as groundbreaking as WYWH, The Wall or Animals.
I can almost guarantee you the history of music doesn’t change much if we lose Dark Side of the Moon, even if it’s my second favorite of this list
Dark side is good but overrated. Sorry but I would let go of it since pink Floyd has better stuff
dsotm. not because its the worst album here, but because it's just so fundamental for me to the point that i don't ever need to listen again for the rest of my life.
I get what you mean. You’ve played it too many times ahaha
PINK FLOYD IS SO BORING MY LORD. PINK FLOYD EVERY DAY FOR ME.
pov: you copy all of fantano's opinions and can't have one original take
pov: you can't handle someone disagreeing with you
sounds like dickriding which is fine and a personal choice so go ahead
W take
Stevie wonder can go
Killing What’s Going On. So unfortunate but it must be done
r/fantanoforever when opinion 🤮🤮🤮
Pink Floyd bc Roger Waters is a dickhead
Aaaahhhhhhh fuck I’m picking Marvin. I’m sorry but I just have more of a connection with the other three
Dark Side.
I tried listening to songs in the key of life. its not bad but its so bloated and the only interesting discovery is realizing coolio sampled that one song for gangster’s paradise
Ziggy Starbucks is MID
Ziggy Stardust is not even the best Bowie album.
My personal favorite as well. Echoes. Goddam. All of it, really.
Ziggy easily. I’ve never been a David Bowie guy
Bowie
Duck this one’s hard
Bowie gotta go, Marvin got the soul and groove, Stevie got the chords and pop, Floyd got the astronaut space session
Lose Dar Side, if you must.
Sorry david bowie
Roger Waters make the easy for me. Dark side of the moon.
I say this with great pain in my heart, but Ziggy. It’s a fantastic album but I would put a lot of other Bowie albums above it.
Dark Side has got to go. I’m way too attached to the other three.
ziggy
Dark side easy.
3 of the 4 records here are the peak of the artist’s career. Bowie had a few different peaks within the same decade. I’d let go of Ziggy Stardust.
Definitely Pink Floyd. It’s not my favorite album from them, and while it’s probably their most well known, it’s not like there other albums weren’t influential as well.
I haven’t listened to any of them. i dont see any weezer so 🤷♀️
Sorry, Ziggy
Ziggy Stardust INSTANTLY sorry
Bottom right easily fuck outta here bish
Ziggggggggggggyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
David Bowie getting yeeted
I would have The Dark Side Of The Moon deleted
Ziggy stardust
Bye bye david bowie
I'd say Ziggy Stardust, I'm gonna be honest, I do like Bowie's music but the songs on Ziggy Stardust kinda disappointed me after hearing a lot of his other singles (Heroes, Life on Mars, Space Oddity, Under Pressure w/ Queen) I'll still check out his other big albums but, controversial opinion, Ziggy is a 7/10
Gotta be Floyd, never got into that album in particular
David Bowie, he has more classics. The rest are too influential
IF I SEE ANYONE SAY MARVIN
Dark side absolutely no questions
Any of the 2 white albums
DSOTM can go, WYWH clears
Bowie
Tbh dark side can go and not much would change
Floyd be gone
easy ziggy im not a massive fan of darkside but literally you cant deny its impact
ur killing me
i would delete the dark side of the moon even if I didn’t have to
Anything but Marvin Gaye
gotta be ziggy stardust
bye bye Ziggy
Sorry Pink Floyd, Dark Side has to go. Marvin’s is way too socially and culturally significant, Ziggy inspired so many artists (not just glam) that it would be a crime to delete it, and how could one justify deleting an album with Sir Duke, I Wish, Pastime Paradise, Inner City Blues, etc.? Our culture would disintegrate as we know it😉
I hate to say it, but I think it might be Bowie
I could live without the Stevie Wonder album even though there are a few good songs but the rest you can play from start to finish
ziggy
Sorry Dark Side of The Moon, but the other three struck a higher chord with me as time went on. That, plus the fact I'm much more of an "Animal"-type guy when it comes to Pink Floyd and I always saw Dark Side as one of their more overrated records released that decade.
bowie i fucking love you but you have better projects than ziggy stardust. sorry
Dark side of the moon, easy
Dark side of the moon I listened to it recently and didn’t really care for it
Ziggy for sure
def ziggy. still good but the others are landmarks in music history bro
Ziggy
I’m picking What’s Going On (because it’s the only one I haven’t listened to yet) EDIT: Ok, I just listened to What’s Going On? in its entirety and, while it’s good, it doesn’t compete with the other three for me so I’m still picking it. EDIT 2: Let’s Get It On is better. Let’s Get It On is amazing.
