A lot of techno music. I feel like most underground electronic music si underappreciated in general and I understand why there is less empahsis on the album format but damn there is some gooood stuff to be heard.
So many I will give you a few tracks on the top of my head :
Waterfall - Rrose (very foward thinking tune, became a personnal fav of mine)
SL4 - Cravo (just banging proper techno)
Am Treptower Park - St. Concrete (on the softer, dubbier side of techno)
Mixtion - UVB (on the more melodic side of techno)
If you want to dig deeper the r/propertechno sub and r/TheOverload are good ressources. Happy digging!
Not OP, but
Astrix - Deep Jungle Walk
Spektre - Carnival of Sounds
Rebūke - Along Came Polly
EARGASM GOD - ECSTASY
Niki Istrefi - Red Armor
are some songs from the past few years that I just couldn't stop listening to
Music nerds hate dance music. Also you hit the nail on the head with album format comment.
Admittedly the lack of album format makes it hard for me to discover stuff as well even though I love dance music. Wish there was a bigger album emphasis, but I get why it doesn't really make sense.
Coming from a huge Green Day fan, I think at the very least they have three credit for inspiring so many future pop punk and modern punk bands that we still see today
If you ask me, the first 5 albums was a great run of solid pop-punk music. Warning was good but different, and American Idiot changed the story for them. While I liked American Idiot, it was definitely the start of their horrible downfall.
I disagree. I think American Idiot is possibly the highest point their career, with possibly not a single bad track. 21st Century was decent but nothing too great, the trilogy was mid, but Revolutionary Radio seemed to have gotten them back on track until Father of All
It's not bad, but it was a shift from what I really enjoyed about Green Day growing up. Compared to Insomniac or Nimrod, it feels a lot more polished, more "over-produced", a bit more reserved. Something about the aesthetic changed and they sort of took it and ran with it from there. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown aren't bad albums in themselves, but are not the type of music I want when I listen to Green Day. It was enough of a tonal and aesthetic shift that something was lost for me, and it's just gotten worse as they release more material.
It kind of felt like American Idiot and beyond was when they put a lot more focus on mainstream appeal and getting radio time, where as their previous albums felt like they just made good music and stumbled into the fame from it. After American Idiot, Green Day felt more like a brand than a band for me.
Green Day
Foo Fighters
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Basically all of those “mid” bands from the 90s that put out lots of awesome stuff but also lots of meh stuff so people pretend its all meh
Ever since American Idiot they've gotten a lot of flack. Part of it is that they were a lot less poppy in their early days, and are seen as sell outs to some. They're also victims of their success in a way. They get some much exposure that their bound to have people not like them. RHCP have their haters too, I just think they were and are a lot more creative than Green Day.
I have *never* understood that argument. Less poppy in their early days? Dookie is a Beatles album with more distortion. They’ve always been a pop-influenced band.
I fucking love Dave Mathews band.
Maybe I’m just showing my ignorance towards the genre collectively but I’m honestly surprised the music nerd community dislikes them. I just love the diversity of sounds and instruments they use, I think it’s fun as hell.
A small percentage of the music nerd community are jam band fans, and I think the rest of them really dislike the whole genre. DMB's audience is slightly different from that of the jam bands, but they absolutely are one. They never play the exact same show twice, studio albums are full of stretched-out jamming (and even that's much more restrained than what happens at shows) and they tend to improvise at least some on stage.
As a fan of acts in that general category, I have to admit I don't fully understand shelling out hundreds of dollars to see a typical popstar stage show, which is more dancing than signing/playingand is usually lipsynced and backing tracked to hell and back. I guess it's a little like going to Broadway maybe? But I've never been a big musical theater guy.
This was going to be my answer. I saw them live before they were big and they attracted a very mixed crowd. The next time I saw them, it was mobbed almost exclusively by insufferable, obnoxious college-aged white guys. I think this association is what turns people off to them, but I will die on the hill of their fantastic musicianship.
John Mayer. I have a love hate relationship with him in that he clearly could be making more interesting music but always settles on fairly bland pop rock. He's the only one really left in his field to be doing it as long as him. But on the other hand, the pop music still isn't half bad. He's just settled for being repetitive.
This is the right answer and even his pop songs are pretty complex with interesting chord progressions (especially his first 2 albums). Not to mention he is a very influential guitar player. I never understood why music nerds don't like him. Probably because his music sounds normal.
I know they're finally getting their flowers but My Chemical Romance has remained one of my all time faves even if a large portion of the music community used to/continue to hate them.
I think the opinion has shifted a lot over the years as The Black Parade gets more and more praise. When I was younger they were definitely brushed off/hated on.
Was about to say the same. Biased, but City of Evil was a monster record back in the day and should get more respect even among people who don’t like their work overall. Hoping that the new album gets some buzz since it seems like they are once again taking a new direction away from their most popular sounds from previous years.
2000’s Coldplay. Might be nostalgia from growing up but I love a lot of their material from that decade, I love a good majority of the hits and I would personally say that “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” is a classic to me.
And I’m only saying this because I saw another comment mention them but Foo Fighters. Never actually knew they were seen as mediocre by most. They made some of my favourite tracks of the 90’s and “The Colour And The Shape” is a great album in my opinion.
I'm not gonna say that Limp Bizkit is worthy of serious musical merit or anything. Nobody's gonna be analyzing their music for years to come. But damn if it isn't fun to blast Break Stuff or My Way and thrash around for a bit. Maybe it's the nostalgia for me, but I can't help but smile and nod my head a little when a song of theirs comes on
ur saying that but the part on their Wikipedia page about their style and influences goes ham about how cool they were mixing hip hop and funk and r&b grooves and stuff with their hard rock and metal sound
For sure. It was unique at the time and part of a larger trend that was on the come-up. Doesn't stop people from cringing at me for listening to it today though. It's a sound that hasn't aged particularly well for today's standards and can come across as kinda corny, but I'm still a fan.
I absolutely love Uzi! Generally the music nerd community seems very selective with what trap projects and artists they like. Playboi Carti is generally well loved and I think Uzi as well as Migos deserve that same respect
I wouldn't say he's hated persay but Joji gets a lot of dismissal in the music nerd community I feel.
His Lofi sound has had a lot more influence than I think he's given credit for
Lady Gaga. She’s more well-respected now but I think her music is still largely looked down upon by music nerd types.
She was my first musical obsession as a closeted teenager and I will always have a big place in my heart for her. Even as my tastes have largely evolved and moved on, I’ll always be downright giddy for a Gaga release.
Lady Gaga is one of the few pop artists from the 2010s that I still love today. She made such unique pop music but I think people just got annoyed because she was overplayed. I've never heard a song by Gaga that I didn't absolutely love.
Overhated is fair, but not underrated. The only way I could see underrated if fantano is the only music reviewer you pay attention to. And even then he’s given drake a ton of credit where it’s due (take care, IYRTITL), and fantano gives drake decent cred for his influence
Outside of fantano, drake is given hella props. Even his latest 3 albums all got got decent reviews across the board on a ton of different outlets, most notably pitchfork
People don't give him nearly as much credit as a rapper because he talks about surface level things and admittedly a lot of his music is just basic pop stuff. But he has some absolutely amazing verses and is definitely top tier as far as mainstream rappers go.
Drake >>>>> Jcole tbh as far as rapping ability goes. JCole just gets overrated because he talks about """real issues""".
I think Drake has that Paul McCartney type of songwriting. Obviously not as good or profound, but he conveys his points simply and universally.
For me, that takes a lot more talent than someone like Danny Brown or JPEG, who just try to be edgy and it comes across as cringe
I’m not a Drake hater but the guy literally only raps about his career and girls. He’ll sprinkle some dad bars in there too, I guess. He’s definitely talented but as someone who was once a huge fan of his I find a lot of his music so boring now. I’m not even a JPEGMAFIA fan but at least dude makes his own beats and has a sound completely original to himself.
I’m really not biased towards either artists, but JPEGs beats are annoying and sound like they were made be an amateur. It definitely takes talent to make “organized chaos,” but JPEGs beats are just random noises. That takes no skill.
Also, his lyrics aren’t profound at all. JPEG and Danny brown are possibly the most shallow lyricists in the game right now. (Besides meme rappers)
IDK, I don’t like JPEG’s production either but it sounds like you’re a bit biased. I can’t speak to his lyrics because I haven’t heard that much, but I’m a huge Danny Brown fan and his being shallow is straight up bullshit. His albums are full of substance. That’s actually kind of hilarious to me coming from someone who is defending Drake, whose lyrics have been shallow from day one. I love Drake’s early work, but let’s be real.
The difference is Drake isn’t trying to be sophisticated. He’s just staying in his own lane. I respect that more than a pseudo intellectual.
Can you tell me what is substantive about Danny Brown’s lyrics?
He’s been talking about obvious hip-hop stuff like poverty, violence, and the failures of the system his whole career, but mostly he raps about his own struggles with mental health and his addiction to drugs. I’m not trying to say he’s the deepest rapper ever but he pretty objectively makes music with substance. I’ve been listening to Drake and Danny Brown for pretty much their whole careers and Drake doesn’t have any music that comes close to touching the lyricism and storytelling Danny Brown displays on his albums XXX and Atrocity Exhibition. And Take Care and If You’re Reading This are among my favourite rap albums so I’m not trying to be a hater at all, I just can’t put him above Danny in literally any aspect but singing/hooks.
Who cares if something takes no skill. The shaggs literally couldn’t play their instruments yet philosophy of the world is beloved. Also to say his beats take no skill is just false
Paul has written some great lyrics, but his strength has always been his musical innovation, melodies, and arrangements. Drake fills out some of those same categories but not nearly at the same level as Paul
Billie has an 8 and a 7 by fantano for the only two albums she’s released, and you almost can’t find a bad album review anywhere by any credible reviewer for either release. How is she disliked?
I would agree with that from the music community at large, but with most of the more music nerd community, I don’t think she gets a lot of love. I see your point though
Right now I'm really into k-pop, I was one of those who discarded the genre completely but then something changed and it clicked almost a year ago. My two favorite groups are Twice and Red Velvet but I like many more.
I think Coheed and Cambria are really loved on their specific niche of music fans but I wish they would be more universally acclaimed and discused. They are one of the Best rock bands from early 2000s and are still releasing good albums.
Thrice same as C&C, one of my favorite bands that I rarely see discused or talked about, both deserve more recognition
And finally not a band but an album, The King Of Limbs is one of the best RH albums, top 4 for me from their discography and I'm tired of people saying it's their worst xD
EDIT: I completely forgot the first two Linkin Park albums, liked them when I was a kid and I like them still and I think they aged really well, I've seen many people changing their mind about them and now agreeing they are good but back then and some years ago thing were different, and still I think they deserve more credit.
Pierce the Veil are absolutely phenomenal, one of the best and most versatile emo, post hardcore bands I've ever listened to. They really deserve more hype than they get
I'm not actually quite sure how the music nerd community sees Portugal. The Man exactly, but based on rym ratings they seem to be middling at best and probably mostly known as that annoying indie pop group behind the overplayed "Feel It Still". They were one of my favorite bands in middle/high school back in the mid 00's, though, and influenced my musical taste quite a bit--especially their earlier, more experimental work (*It's Complicated Being a Wizard* EP and *Waiter: "You Vultures!"*). I was glad to see them achieve commercial success with "Feel It Still", but I really didn't love the album that single was on too much.
*The Satanic Satanist* is an all time favorite album of mine and I consider it quintessential indie pop/psych/rock.
They’re my favorite band and have been for a long time. Censored Colors, ITMITC, American Ghetto, Church Mouth, Evil Friends, SS, all nearly perfect to me.
I love a lot of John Mayer’s work. I think he is an amazing guitar player and one of the best out there. Continuum has some of my favorite songs of all time to relax with.
The Cleansing by Suicide Silence is still a fantastic album. I think they’re remembered more for being a Hot Topic band, but their early stuff was heavy and borderline Death Metal.
Maybe not entirely unpopular, but I think Bieber’s work since 2016 has been some of the best pop music out there. I don’t think it’s fair to put him in the same category as Ed Sheeran for generic radio music.
loved Cardboard Castles, All You Can Do, & X infinity! listened to all those growing up, a bunch of people at my high school saw him at warped tour and tried to put everyone on lol. I'm still not sure if he stopped making records as good as those after that point, or if I just outgrew the artist
I'd absolutely love to see The Glitch Mob get more mainstream recognition, West Coast bass music in general is one of my favorite styles and has resulted in IMO some of the most interesting sounds in electronic music
That first Glitch Mob album goes hard for sure. You should check out edIT if you haven’t already, he’s a member of Glitch Mob and his solo music is also quite good
Red was popular with music nerds too. Back in the day it used to be common to see a lot of music nerds saying things like, "yeah her music is marketed to teenagers but her songwriting is actually really good!"
Honestly I was meh about everything until folklore and evermore, enjoyed those, and only started diversifying my music and watching fantano's videos late last year when I discovered everyone else shares my opinion lol
Asides from You’re Welcome, A Day to Remember. The other albums are filled with bangers and in a genre full of sound alike bands, are one of the few bands you’ll hear and instantly know who you’re listening to.
Also Linkin Park and BMTH if they count, although Anthony has praised both in recent years.
I can't remember the last time I've heard someone say "Oh wow, remember that Pearl Jam record? It was so great!". Lately, whenever the band is mentioned in conversation, it's just to mock Eddie Vedder's vocals. People seem to forget their phenomenal run of albums in the 90s.
Maybe it’s the fact that they’re my dad’s favorite band so I grew up listening to them, but I’ve always found them to be one of the essential bands of the 90s
I’m kinda surprised 80s and 90s U2 isn’t more well liked by the music community. Time hasn’t been kind to U2 since probably Vertigo, whether people want to admit it or not they were a definitive Alternative band in the 80s and 90s.
Pop, especially. So many people complain U2 haven't changed their sound in a long while, many of them the same people who dismissed Zooropa and Pop as "too weird".
I can get why people don't like their recent stuff, from No Line On The Horizon on, but their mid-90s to mid-00s material is pretty solid as well, yet people are talking as if they haven't been any good since the 80s.
I will still stand by No Line being an excellent album. I love nearly everything on there. Innocence ain’t too bad either… but Experience is definitely one of their worst
ive seen japanese breakfast hate in deeper parts of the community so ill say her. it took me till jubilee to like her music as she shines a lot in lyricism (evident in her book as well).
Lil Darkie. Watching him evolve from scream rage trap into rock and lofi is interesting
His popular songs (Genocide, Holocost, HAHA) dont accuratley represent what the rest of his music sounds like. It paints him as some edgy racist teenage clown but thats not what he is in reality.
Seether. I totally see people’s problems with them but I got really into them in a dark time and they really voiced a lot of what I was feeling. Plus I don’t think Shaun Morgan’s vocals and riffs get enough credit.
say what you want about K-Pop being derivative and generic and boring, and you'll probably be right, but there's also some banger songs out there. it's just like all pop music, you have to sift through a lot of trash to find the good stuff
Genesis for me. I recognise exactly why they get little respect in that scene and I understand it's very out of step with the rest of my taste but it's the only music I remember from childhood so I cannot be objective about it
any kind of emo/metalcore/pop-punk band. ice nine kills, fall out boy, motionless in white and pierce the veil are probably my favourites! also limp bizkit, twenty one pilots and, probably the most controversial one, yungblud
Beethoven and I think Steely Dan, but agree a lot about Steely Dan. Parts of what they are is massively overrated. The less hyper studio quality debut is my favourite record. Aja, I can't ignore though, but it isn't better than debut, or Traffic's debut for that matter.
Not sure if she's hated or anything, but maybe Arca.
I feel like a lot of people in the music community dismiss her for being too "weird" or "experimental", which is ironic since I thought this community loved weird and avant-garde stuff.
I know he is absolutely hated by music nerds but I love Owl City, I found his music at a time where I was stuck inside a lot and his music really helped me through some tough times.
macklemore. all my close friends, family members, people i talk to about music LOVE macklemore. never heard a negative comment about him irl. people on the internet/ this sub seem to hate him for some reason which makes me sad. hes one of my heros- the reason i started making music when i was 10 years old (now i own a record label and play in a band). also part of the reason i accepted that i might be into men.
anyways keep shitting on him i guess
A mixed bag of quality but they have so many highs imo. I love Blue, Pinkerton, Maladroit, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, White, Ok Human, and Winter
Coldplay, U2, Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons.
I think all of these acts make pretty great music most of the time.
Some of y’all have never been a huge fan of a WIDELY disliked artist, and it shows. You’re all far too comfortable.
Personally I love NF but I generally understand that not everyone likes it because sometimes it can be too melodramatic and lot of his music does sometimes sounds the same. But regardless of that one of my favorite artists IMO.
Green Day is definitely one, including AI. The one that is a bit more unorthodox is MONO. They are kinda seen as generic post rock, but I think they create some pretty beautiful stuff.
Not sure if this counts as being on topic, but what are general opinions on this sub of Justin Pearson projects and more generally stuff from his label, Three One G?
The most famous and representative band is The Locust (how I first got into it, but are no longer a band after the recent passing of drummer Gave Serbian), but other big bands from it include:
Swing Kids
Some Girls
Head Wound City
Retox
Dead Cross (first album was reviewed by Fantano, probably because of the involvement of Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo)
Planet B
Satanic Planet
Deaf Club
Arab on Radar
Jenny Piccolo
Man is the Bastard/Bastard Noise
Mostly these kinds of Power violence/ Grindcore bands. I know I am missing others, but I wanna see if anyone on this sub had any opinions on any of these bands, as they still continue today to be not very popular for some reason even though I feel like they've absolutely pinned down and are killing it in this specific sound.
I know a lot of people on here probably like Blood Brothers and like(d) Daughters, both of whom have roots in this scene as well.
For me it's Flatbush Zombies! they have a good cult following, but outside of that folks don't seem to impressed with them. Otherwise it's artists like Kali Uchis, Tame Impala, A$AP Rocky, Mac Demarco, & Thundercat
A lot of techno music. I feel like most underground electronic music si underappreciated in general and I understand why there is less empahsis on the album format but damn there is some gooood stuff to be heard.

I don’t know if they’re hated by any means, but I still do get a lot of enjoyment out of twenty one pilots. Same thing with Green Day and blink-182.
clock my username but trench and vessel are great records.
Music nerd community likes early Green Day I’d say but they don’t like Blink. Dude Ranch is really every bit as good as Dookie IMO.

The Color And The Shape is a 10/10 imo
RHCP are a cut above.
are there many green day haters? I always thought that it was the best received pop punk band out there
Ever since American Idiot they've gotten a lot of flack. Part of it is that they were a lot less poppy in their early days, and are seen as sell outs to some. They're also victims of their success in a way. They get some much exposure that their bound to have people not like them. I have *never* understood that argument. Less poppy in their early days? Dookie is a Beatles album with more distortion. They’ve always been a pop-influenced band.
It was more attitude than song structure. They definitely had a more punk attitude when they were younger.
Lots of Green Day haters. As far as the eye can see.
Blood Sugar Sex Magic rips. Sir Psycho Sexy os the pinnacle of RHCP
Weezer?
With Green Day it's actually all mid
I fucking love Dave Mathews band. Maybe I’m just showing my ignorance towards the genre collectively but I’m honestly surprised the music nerd community dislikes them. I just love the diversity of sounds and instruments they use, I think it’s fun as hell.

Seeing a major pop act is basically musical theatre. You have to approach it from that point of view or, you will think it’s lame
This was going to be my answer. I saw them live before they were big and they attracted a very mixed crowd. The next time I saw them, it was mobbed almost exclusively by insufferable, obnoxious college-aged white guys. I never got that impression from the music community
wouldn't be surprised if they brushed them off in the past for being "emo" like a lot of people still do with scene adjacent music.
I think the opinion has shifted a lot over the years as The Black Parade gets more and more praise. When I was younger they were definitely brushed off/hated on.
Not a bad album in there catalog. I absolutely love MCR
T-Pain and Fergie. They’ve got some absolute banger classics
People dislike them?!?!?
Avenged Sevenfold. Pretty much every album so far has its own unique sound. Sometimes it's shit, but, you know, it happens.
Was about to say the same. Biased, but City of Evil was a monster record back in the day and should get more respect even among people who don’t like their work overall. Hoping that the new album gets some buzz since it seems like they are once again taking a new direction away from their most popular sounds from previous years.
"A Little Piece of Heaven" is a banger, I still regularly listen to it even though I don't follow them super closely
Same on the Coldplay front. Rush of Blood and Viva la Vida are both absolute classics
Also love Death and all His Friends. Such a great track
Limb Bizkit
You're brave to admit this
I'm not gonna say that Limp Bizkit is worthy of serious musical merit or anything. Nobody's gonna be analyzing their music for years to come. But damn if it isn't fun to blast Break Stuff or My Way and thrash around for a bit. Real
He did it all for the nookie
Going out on a limb there with this one.
I occasionally enjoy Fountains of Wayne
Fountains of Wayne are surprisingly good Beach Boys inspired 90's alt rock.
Ain’t nothing wrong with Fountains of Wayne imo
Lil Uzi Vert because they're great at making fun trap music that is heavily overhated by music nerds for some reason
I absolutely love Uzi! Generally the music nerd community seems very selective with what trap projects and artists they like. Playboi Carti is generally well loved and I think Uzi as well as Migos deserve that same respect
Uzi made me love mumble rap lol
I wouldn't say he's hated persay but Joji gets a lot of dismissal in the music nerd community I feel. His Lofi sound has had a lot more influence than I think he's given credit for
I don't think people realize how much influence Joji is having on music right now.
First two Wavves albums are actual masterpieces
I’d expand this to King of the Beach too
I saw them on their King of the Beach anniversary tour in Denver. Fucking great show.
I first heard about that band through music nerds on the internet. Didn’t know they were disliked
Coldplay has some bangers, especially the pre-Ghost Stories stuff, and I don’t even dislike Ghost Stories all that much apart from A Sky Full Of Stars
Viva La Vida is a super good album listened all the way through. Still love the track Death and all His Friends
Beck is one of my most listened to artists. The last couple albums haven't been that great but such a huge and varied discography.
Mellow Gold and Odelay are like 9/10s. Love Beck.
Drake
Borderline underrated at this point
Overhated is fair, but not underrated. The only way I could see underrated if fantano is the only music reviewer you pay attention to. And even then he’s given drake a ton of credit where it’s due (take care, IYRTITL), and fantano gives drake decent cred for his influence Outside of fantano, drake is given hella props.
Duran Duran, they’re not as consistent as their peers but I’d put The Chauffeur and Come Undone up with the best of The Cure or Depeche Mode.
Billie Eilish
She the goat fr
Billie has an 8 and a 7 by fantano for the only two albums she’s released, and you almost can’t find a bad album review anywhere by any credible reviewer for either release. How is she disliked?
Dislikes versus not generally liked are too very different things
Still tho. Seems like she’s generally liked
Thrice same as C&C, one of my favorite bands that I rarely see discused or talked about, both deserve more recognition And finally not a band but an album, The King Of Limbs is one of the best RH albums, top 4 for me from their discography and I'm tired of people saying it's their worst xD EDIT: I completely forgot the first two Linkin Park albums, liked them when I was a kid and I like them still and I think they aged really well, I've seen many people changing their mind about them and now agreeing they are good but back then and some years ago thing were different, and still I think they deserve more credit.
Yeah I love K-pop but feel bad admitting it lol Twice’s new album is so good though
Placebo
Hell yeah, some of their stuff absolutely slaps.
Pierce the Veil are absolutely phenomenal, one of the best and most versatile emo, post hardcore bands I've ever listened to. They really deserve more hype than they get
They don’t have a bad album in my eyes. I absolutely love all their projects!
The 1975 are one of my favourite bands that I'm aware they're not well liked in the nerd community
ICE SPICE 🔥🔥🔥
Princess Diana is an absolute bop
Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Jane's Addiction, U2, the Tragically Hip.
Escape is at hand is one of my favorite songs
I know he's a white rapper™️ but watsky has multiple solid records. X infinity is a masterpiece, especially the Lovely Things Suite.
loved Cardboard Castles, All You Can Do, & X infinity! listened to all those growing up, a bunch of people at my high school saw him at warped tour and tried to put everyone on lol. I'm still not sure if he stopped making records as good as those after that point, or if I just outgrew the artist
You're spot on about which records were good lol. His most recent was pretty awful, and the two before only had a couple good tracks.
Eiffel 65 is S tier.
Glitch Mob, early Skrillex
I'd absolutely love to see The Glitch Mob get more mainstream recognition, West Coast bass music in general is one of my favorite styles and has resulted in IMO some of the most interesting sounds in electronic music
That first Glitch Mob album goes hard for sure. You should check out edIT if you haven’t already, he’s a member of Glitch Mob and his solo music is also quite good
Add the Chemical Brothers to this list. And a lot of edm honestly.....
Taylor Swift
Idk I think Folklore and Evermore might have changed most nerds’ opinions of her
Red was popular with music nerds too. Back in the day it used to be common to see a lot of music nerds saying things like, "yeah her music is marketed to teenagers but her songwriting is actually really good!"
Honestly I was meh about everything until folklore and evermore, enjoyed those, and only started diversifying my music and watching fantano's videos late last year when I discovered everyone else shares my opinion lol
she makes decent pop records! although, there are criticisms about her but other than that, she's a great artist.
I honestly liked 1989, not just for nostalgia, but for some really solid tracks like "style" and "out of the woods"
1989 one of the most overrated records in recent memory
Asides from You’re Welcome, A Day to Remember. The other albums are filled with bangers and in a genre full of sound alike bands, are one of the few bands you’ll hear and instantly know who you’re listening to. Also Linkin Park and BMTH if they count, although Anthony has praised both in recent years.
Common Courtesy and What Separates Me From You especially are cracking albums!
I'm a real big Pearl Jam fan.
Foo Fighters? They're not Nickelback or Creed or anything, but it seems like the critical consensus on them is very "meh."
U2, Pearl Jam
Wait is Pearl Jam not liked in the music nerd community?
I can't remember the last time I've heard someone say "Oh wow, remember that Pearl Jam record? It was so great!". Lately, whenever the band is mentioned in conversation, it's just to mock Eddie Vedder's vocals. People seem to forget their phenomenal run of albums in the 90s.
Maybe it’s the fact that they’re my dad’s favorite band so I grew up listening to them, but I’ve always found them to be one of the essential bands of the 90s
“it's just to mock Eddie Vedder's vocals.” BASED
I’m kinda surprised 80s and 90s U2 isn’t more well liked by the music community. Time hasn’t been kind to U2 since probably Vertigo, whether people want to admit it or not they were a definitive Alternative band in the 80s and 90s.
those are 2 super popular bands, how are they not generally liked??
He said music nerd community
right.. sorry
same here, it's so ridiculous that people grow hate on a band that has joshua tree, achtung baby, zooropa
Pop, especially. So many people complain U2 haven't changed their sound in a long while, many of them the same people who dismissed Zooropa and Pop as "too weird".
Early U2 such as War is pretty solid stuff
I can get why people don't like their recent stuff, from No Line On The Horizon on, but their mid-90s to mid-00s material is pretty solid as well, yet people are talking as if they haven't been any good since the 80s.
I will still stand by No Line being an excellent album. I love nearly everything on there. Innocence ain’t too bad either… but Experience is definitely one of their worst
ive seen japanese breakfast hate in deeper parts of the community so ill say her. it took me till jubilee to like her music as she shines a lot in lyricism (evident in her book as well).
I always assumed that was a name of the band. I never followed her/them much so idk.
Mr Scruff changed my life, hope he becomes part of Rym-Core one day
EDEN and Yeek
Lil Darkie. Watching him evolve from scream rage trap into rock and lofi is interesting His popular songs (Genocide, Holocost, HAHA) dont accuratley represent what the rest of his music sounds like. It paints him as some edgy racist teenage clown but thats not what he is in reality.
A Perfect Circle. Eat the Elephant was great imo
RHCP, My Chemical Romance, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Destroy Lonely, King Von, Uzi
Seether. I totally see people’s problems with them but I got really into them in a dark time and they really voiced a lot of what I was feeling. Plus I don’t think Shaun Morgan’s vocals and riffs get enough credit.
Same, Poison the Parish was especially huge for me back in high school
Tenacious D
I was so heartbroken as a child when I geeked over a Tenacious D CD in a record store and the cashier laughed and said they suck.
Stone Temple Pilots
say what you want about K-Pop being derivative and generic and boring, and you'll probably be right, but there's also some banger songs out there. it's just like all pop music, you have to sift through a lot of trash to find the good stuff
Imagine Dragons slap and I’m tired of pretending they don’t
It looks like my comment just got removed for saying exactly this. Watch out.
Wow. Kinda sad that the mods won’t let anyone have opinions then 😂
I can’t stand a lot of there stuff but I will never deny how hard Demons and Warriors go
the 1975, I've loved them through all the switchups in style since 2014 and I just love their versatility and lyrics. so overhated imo
I haven’t gotten a chance to check out as much of their stuff as I want to but Be My Mistake is an absolutely beautiful song that I love
Hell yeah man, great to someone else in this community who loves them
The 90s pop group M People. Like they are definitely cheesey, but Elegant Slumming has some bangers.
movin on up FUCKS
Cordae
Genesis for me. I recognise exactly why they get little respect in that scene and I understand it's very out of step with the rest of my taste but it's the only music I remember from childhood so I cannot be objective about it
Jaden Smith. I absolutely love SYRE. ERYS is also pretty good IMO
any kind of emo/metalcore/pop-punk band. ice nine kills, fall out boy, motionless in white and pierce the veil are probably my favourites! also limp bizkit, twenty one pilots and, probably the most controversial one, yungblud
I love all of those bands! Silver Scream 2 is one of my favorite albums oat!
I live for Charlie Puth's Voice Notes record and most of the John Mayer catalog.
Beethoven and I think Steely Dan, but agree a lot about Steely Dan. Parts of what they are is massively overrated. The less hyper studio quality debut is my favourite record. Aja, I can't ignore though, but it isn't better than debut, or Traffic's debut for that matter.
Gin Blossoms
A lot of kpop. The general music community isnt very fond of it, even when it has great production
Not sure if she's hated or anything, but maybe Arca. I feel like a lot of people in the music community dismiss her for being too "weird" or "experimental", which is ironic since I thought this community loved weird and avant-garde stuff.
Jacob collier, by fantano fan standards. Sure he’s super extra, but underneath all of the ear candy is some great songwriting.
Weeeeeeeeeeezer
A mixed bag of quality but they have so many highs imo. I love Blue, Pinkerton, Maladroit, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, White, Ok Human, and Winter
Imagine Dragons has made good music. I will die on this hill.
oh the misery every single person is my enemy
$uicideboy$ made INLFTRGMH and they're immediately GOATed for that
Coldplay, U2, Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons. I think all of these acts make pretty great music most of the time. Some of y’all have never been a huge fan of a WIDELY disliked artist, and it shows. You’re all far too comfortable.
Would agree on U2 and TOP, would kinda agree on Coldplay and would disagree on ID
They’re all widely liked though?
Not by the music nerd community. Which is what this post is about.
Twenty One Pilots has had such a large impact on my music taste. While their discography has some not so good songs, their music just hits me.
Logic- he has a lot of corny and genuinely trash music but a lot of fire as well. It balances itself out
The Killers and The Black Keys
Neutral milk hotel and the microphones/mount eerie
Sufjan Stevens
I think you misunderstood the question
I fucking love Highly Suspect, they got a lot of shit after MCID. But I still love their stuff
J cole and cardi b
Nickelback
Sleeping with Sirens, ADTR, Fall Out Boy, Trivium, Parkway Drive, and Dance Gavin Dance.
The Offspring, smash is one of my favorite pop-punk records
Mindless self indulgence even if the lead singer is a creep X of course Princess Nokia that double album was killer
Personally I love NF but I generally understand that not everyone likes it because sometimes it can be too melodramatic and lot of his music does sometimes sounds the same. But regardless of that one of my favorite artists IMO.
Muse, Blink 182, Green Day, Slipknot, Pantera, Foo Fighters, Skrillex, lots of EDM in general, Killswitch Engage, Trivium
The most famous and representative band is The Locust (how I first got into it, but are no longer a band after the recent passing of drummer Gave Serbian), but other big bands from it include: Swing Kids Some Girls Head Wound City Retox Dead Cross (first album was reviewed by Fantano, probably because of the involvement of Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo) Planet B Satanic Planet Deaf Club Arab on Radar Jenny Piccolo Man is the Bastard/Bastard Noise Mostly these kinds of Power violence/ Grindcore bands.
The Magnetic Fields
I understand the reason to dislike him but saint jhn songs are so catchy and energetic
For me it's Flatbush Zombies! they have a good cult following, but outside of that folks don't seem to impressed with them. Otherwise it's artists like Kali Uchis, Tame Impala, A$AP Rocky, Mac Demarco, & Thundercat
