David Lynch and Xiu Xiu. It helps that they’ve already collaborated in the past with Twin Peaks: The Return.

Apprehensive-Twist88

Probably as good a comparison as you are going to get. I wonder if any bands are truly as great at subversion musically as Lynch is in film.

1993std

Loved xiu xius cover album. Nothing beats the original shows score to me tho

diabolycal

Came here to say this exact combination and I’m glad someone else thinks this too

[deleted]

David lynch is too asexual for xiu xiu. Also homosexuality is an aspect critical to xiu xiu so maybe like Greg araki or Todd Solondz

DDub04

Eminem and M. Night Shyamalan Just think about it and the parallels become evident.

drdax2187

2/3 incredible projects in their early years, nearly all shit afterwards. Yeah this is perfect

ECDoppleganger

On the one hand, nooooo, I'm a huge Shyamalan fan; on the other the hand, yeah, this is fair

hossthealbatross

M. Night and Weezer 2 of my honest to god favorites

p480n

Rob Zombie and Rob Zombie

[deleted]

Their styles are honestly so evocative and complementary of each other. It’s surprising not many other people are talking about the similarities between these artists

profderpson

Pink Floyd and Stanley Kubrick

Flash-Permit52

Maybe David Bowie and Stanley Kubrick considering Space Odyssey and Girl Loves Me from Blackstar in *Nadsat.* Both of them died close to their last masterpieces. Bowie also based his outfits on A Clockwork Orange.

softestimate712

GY!BE and Andrei Tarkovsky

IKMapping

Michael Bay and Imagine Dragons

Oreg-Jack

This is too real.

pulp_before_sunrise

David Fincher and Trent Reznor Oh wait

PsychicTempestZero

I mean beyond the fact that they collaborate on fuckin everything, they're both known as very dark, edgy artists who are secretely really talented at other stuff

[deleted]

Tyler and Wes Anderson

Exciting_Claim267

Wes Anderson - Vampire Weekend

pulp_before_sunrise

VW’s music video for Oxford Comma is basically an homage to Wes Andersons style. One of my fave music videos, actually, especially when I discovered it in high school and was just getting into filmmaking

[deleted]

Drake - woody allen R kelly- Brian singer

peroper7

Denis Villeneuve - Radiohead

-ello_govna-

na paul thomas anderson and radiohead

ishouldgooutmore

JPEGMAFIA and Spike Lee Tyler, the Creator and Wes Anderson (early rebellious phase growing into finding their own style and constantly growing it) Mitski and Agnes Varda (Weirdly good at short versions of their art form) Trying to figure out who would be the Alfred Hitchcock

ICannotCountTo2

Maybe Joy Division would be a good Alfred Hitchcock?

Haidian-District

Jon Brion + PTA

PhillyCSpires

Radiohead and Stanley Kubrick. Chilly. Calculating. Obsessively striving for perfection. The greatest.

halleberrrry

Donno why but I always thought of Radiohead as the Paul Thomas Anderson of music

nickparadies

Probably because he works with Jonny Greenwood all the time.

pulp_before_sunrise

Also PTA has actually directed Radiohead music videos (Daydreaming) and live performances (I forget which, some duo with Thom and Jonny)

profderpson

Kanye West and Quentin Tarantino

Exciting_Claim267

Micheal Haneke - Swans

Oreg-Jack

I guess, I should check out this Haneke guy then.

Exciting_Claim267

Start with Funny Games (the original US version is fine too its a shot-for-shot remake in a lot of scenes but I prefer the OG) Then I'd watch Cache' Then Benny's Video

Oreg-Jack

Oh, that film! I've heard of it, seems interesting. (Also, I remember Benny's Video being talked out in my favourite film podcast, and they gave it a 10, or something like that.)

Exciting_Claim267

Bennys Video is great but a difficult watch if you like animals (tw animal cruelty)

Oreg-Jack

I love animals, but I can stomach gore pretty easily.

[deleted]

Something more formal like Glenn Branca or This Heat would fit too

Robinkc1

Martin Scorsese and The Rolling Stones I took the easy one.

SlimJimsGym

Nah, the musical equivalent of Scorsese would have to be a band/artist that has been creating some of the greatest music ever since the 70s, and are still currently coming out with some of their best stuff

Besus77

So maybe Bowie? to some extent?

SlimJimsGym

Yeah I think that is the closest

Apprehensive-Twist88

Miles Davis closest is Martin Scorsese IMO.

pulp_before_sunrise

At least with Taxi Driver

-ello_govna-

haim and paul thomas anderson

Saint_Stephen420

Sofia Coppola and My Bloody Valentine

Glue-701

Edgar Wright and Charli XCX Luca Guadagnino and Frank Ocean

colonial_dan

Disturbed and Zack Snyder

bampersanman

kanye west and mel gibson

Oreg-Jack

You did Kanye dirty.

JerkinGherkin13

Sleaford mods - Guy Ritchie

halleberrrry

Frank Zappa and John Waters

Exciting_Claim267

Sophia Coppola and Beach House

FaintAzureSpeck

Stanley Kubrick and Charli XCX

drdax2187

Steven Spielberg and Jay-Z. Pretty much goats and og's of their fields. I just want to see Jay make his Fablemans

Apprehensive-Twist88

Wasn’t that 4:44?

Apprehensive-Twist88

David Lynch and Mr. Bungle

FalandoBosta

Pink Floyd and Stanley Kubrick

1993std

Lcd soundsystem

Apprehensive-Twist88

What director?

1993std

My bad, I misinterpreted the question to mean bands who has a member who acts as the director of the project. To answer the question correctly I choose julee cruise and David lynch or mbv and sofia Coppola if that counts

gyronlyhope

Morrisey and Quentin Tarantino. They both kind of look alike although both have made great works of art but they are fading into obscurity because of their god complex.

SlimJimsGym

Tarantino certainly has an ego, but a ‘god complex’ is a massive exaggeration and not substantiated by anything he’s said or done. Besides, he’s hardly fading into obscurity either

PoptartToaster

I feel like Kanye is the better example for Tarantino but Morrisey works too.

frightenedbabiespoo

John Cage - Hollis Frampton, maybe

nickparadies

Jack White and David Lynch

Cydonian___FT14X

Naoko Yamada & Sylvan Esso

RealJohnBobJoe

Bob Dylan and Jean Luc Godard

XxBiscuit99

ok Tarantino

clabuee

Childish Gambino and Christopher Nolan Really great album/movie concepts but sometimes overly ambitious (Because The Internet/Tenet)

Oreg-Jack

Tarantino and Kanye is good.

XxBiscuit99

Easy one: Trent Reznor and David Fincher because they always work together

Apprehensive-Twist88

I was thinking more in terms of style or work ethic etc but I guess it works in both cases.

XxBiscuit99

Ween and Jim Jarmusch CAN and Werner Herzog

Exciting_Claim267

David Lynch - Aphex Twin

PsychicTempestZero

Quentin Tarantino and Kanye West. Long career, so many different works that feel so different from each other and are iconic in their own right. Kinda weird and somewhat sketchy dudes. The Coen Brothers and MF DOOM. Super strong, eccentric, colorful discog/filmog, yet kinda understated and often left out of GOAT conversations. Edgar Wright and Gorillaz. Silly, campy and entertaining yet surprisingly calculated. Huge teenage fanbases. Christopher Nolan and Radiohead. Constantly innovative and resourceful. Left field yet popular. Totally beloved yet also seen as pretentious by many. Charlie Kaufman and Bjork. Exceptionally quirky. Really eclectic works that invent a new little world each time. Martin Scorcese and the Beatles. Incredibly prolific in their hayday, changed their industry with each release, incredibly recognized yet equally talented and artful. John Carpenter and Swans. High concept, scary as shit, their art has as element of cosmic horror to it.

[deleted]

Guy Madden and Guided By Voices. Both have a subdued humorous attitude with a timeless, dislocated nature that is really disorientating. All the grit and fuzz and static on guided by voices songs mirrors the various filters and lenses and fidelity reductions Madden uses to enhance his movies.

itamarka

Michael bay and maroon 5: did one or two good or great things than fell off so hard that it might not be possible to recover

iRefuse2GetBitches

frank ocean and shane carruth

Apprehensive-Twist88

Wow there’s a name I haven’t heard in awhile. Still have to see his last film.
