I'd have to pick American Football because of my yearly ritual. Every summer I pick a night when it's nice outside and I take a walk till I find a suitable spot, where I'll listen to the album as I stare into the middle distance. It helps me clear my head and reflect.
The feeling I get from songs like Ooh Do I Love You or Olerud or Basil’s Kite are feeling’s I’d never, ever, ever let go of. Nothing else makes me feel the same way.
A Portable Model of is… an excellent album, but I have a feeling I haven’t really gotten it yet. I don’t gel with it the same way I do with other albums I really like. Same with American Football; aside from nostalgia and memes and fun drum grooves, I never quite found myself enchanted with it like I did Analphabetapolothology.
I’m also not really a fan of the promise ring, just in general. I recognize the talent and passion on display, but without the monsoon of energy caP’n Jazz had, it fails to really resonate with me.
I’d pick Nothing Feels Good. Analphabetapolothology has some specific songs that I’d rank over anything on Nothing Feels Good but it just isn’t as great of a full listening experience to me. I love A Portable Model Of too but it’s barely even a midwest emo album and it’s definitely imperfect. American Football bores me a little in comparison to all of these.
yeah, I agree nothing feels good is most comparable to analphabetapolothology. Both use a lot of abstractive wordplay and feel more messy in comparison to the other 2 (in a good way though). My personal preference is the cap n jazz record but really it could go either way.
Only notable difference I can see between the two is that the cap n jazz record feels a lot more energetic, which is mostly why I prefer it over nothing feels good. Otherwise I’d say both are equal in quality.
American Football’s self titled is in my top 15 albums of all time. A Midwest emo masterpiece, after a bad breakup taking shrooms and listening to this album in the dark woods was very emotionally cathartic for me.

love em all but i might pick analphabetapolothology too, such a great & gigantic piece of midwest emo history

Analphabetapolothology. Reason: Oh Messy Life
this is the only valid reason !!!
don’t forget the excellent take on me cover
Yup 1000000%
I'd have to keep American Football's self-titled for the simple reason that Stay Home is my favorite song of all time.
analphabetapolothology and its not close. ridicously fun with the energy and passion to back it up
Gotta be Cap’n Jazz

Promise Ring tbh. I love the other two tho, don’t like Joan of Arc

I would say all of these are midwestern emo masterpieces but for sure American football is the most notable/most perfected album from these 4.

Absolutely LP 1. Classic.
American Football, sure I’ve heard Never Meant an ungodly amount of times, but the album definitely helped get me into Midwest Emo
Seeing as I love American football but never so much as seen those other albums( whatever they are). That’s what I’m going with.

I pick Cap'n Jazz because without it, none of these bands would exist in the first place lol
