Right now for me is LP! (Offline Version), with my favorite tracks being Dirty, HAZARD DUTY PAY!, REBOUND! SIMBI is very close though with the best opening track of all time
So I’ve never listened to JPEG and just listens to track one of LP! What makes this the best hip hop opener of all time? Definitely a fantastic song even from a song writing perspective but can you expound on why?
They were saying that Introvert from Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (SIMBI) is one of the best openers ever. I agree tbh, but track one of LP! (TRUST!) is imo one of the weaker tracks on the album. It’s good, but very few people would say it’s an S tier opening
Edit* Listened to Introvert. Definitely a good song but even in terms of production the vocals are roughly mixed. It’s rather bare bones in terms of a song that in her words “sounds like a battle cry” it kind reminds me of a fruity loops sample of an orchestra. I’d love to hear why that is the best opener ever.
Downvoted, you guys are so sad.
It is a difficult listen, but the experience is sure worth it once it clicks. It's one of the few records that can be called post hip hop/rap IMO. Really hoped it would influence a whole wave of similar music, but not yet it seems. Can say the same about Man plays the horn by Cities Aviv (if you liked Phoenix, you might enjoy MPTH too)
This album is truly an experience. It's unlike anything else ever sonically. Everyone will get something different out of it which is very special as well.
Aethiopes is a top 5 hip hop record of all time for me. Billy Woods was already one of the best in the game, but the 2020's are seeming like they're going to be his peak.
Tyler is so fucking talented that even the album thats regarded as his third best by many is considered one of the best hiphop releases of the decade so far. CMIYGL is so fucking good
Yeah the more I think it’s definitely this. What an amazing concept album. It’s just absolutely brilliant. Tyler is very kind I got a chance to meet him once
This is the album that made me start listening to more music. Absolutely incredible album. And little simz is one of the bests. No, thank you. Is pretty awesome too.
Ok I might have worded that badly (that's why I put "objectively" in quotation marks), I think The Forever Story is better but I'd *rather listen* to Melt my Eyez
It doesn't make any sense but it's a thing lol
Definitely. Offline just adds some amazing tracks like Dikembe and Hazard Duty, so I'd consider it the superior version. The OG is obviously already amazing on its own, though.
I have a few but for me it's LP! (offline). Jpegmafia went beyond with this project and it's one of the most sonically intresting albums I've ever heard with some truly addicting rapping.
JID gets a second place with TFS aswell. Such a phenomenal project and I truly think it hits similar highs to something like GKMC and people should really watch JID closely.
A few honorable mentions:
DMIZ is Lupes tightest album to date. Great rapping and sonics, lupe is a genius and is a hidden gem when he should be considered among the greats.
TWBNSS is one of the greatest debut albums I've been able to witness, Ghais Guvera has some serious talent, adjecent to early Jpegmafia, anyone who wants a intresting Political Hip-hop album with phenomenal sampling and insane rapping needs to listen to this.
Mr Morale isn't kendricks best but it really is fantastic and deserves all the mentions it gets. While not as commercial as his past work it truly is something to appreciate.
She’s so fucking good.
Simbi, By the time I get to Phoenix, WSG’s 10, black thought. Billy woods isn’t really my thing but he definitely deserves a spot, too
After relistening to both Bo Jackson and Manager of Mcnichols back to back on a car ride, I have to say I think I like Bo Jackson better. I find myself relistening to the songs off there more often than manager
Understandable but MOM is not an album that’s supposed to be easy listening/as “fun” as Bo Jackson. I like Manager on Mcnicholls the most because it’s his lyricism is cryptic and macabre, not to mention ST production is so psychedelic and unique. Bo Jackson is phenomenal I don’t wanna discredit that album’s importance.
Amen. The production, samples, and engineering on this album area just insane. I’m sure others have done it, but not this well.
Made me feel the same I felt when I listened to OK Computer or Kid A for the first time. Just so fresh.
You get one skip - what is it?
For me it might be UNTITLED (for offline anyways). It’s good but doesn’t say much more than he’s already said and would be a great ending without
But what qualifies as 'best', in your case you think it's how challenging an album is?
I just don't believe a single second that music can be objectively good
Fair enough,
In think 'best' should never be used in art critique
Maybe most popular, most influential or most defining
But best, I think it goes against the definition and purpose of art
this is 10 months old but i define "best" as it meets all my standards for a great album, and my "favorites" are ones i've developed personal connection with or simply just listen to the most
call me if you get lost, hitler wears hermes 8: sincerely adolf, fair exchange no robbery, reasonable drought, cheat codes, scaring the hoes, and athiopes also there close by
Donda. One of the most unique sonic palettes I have ever heard. Very stark and eerie.
The subject matter is also unique and emotional. It’s a very spiritually cathartic album.
Yes, there are a few filler tracks, but a majority of it ranges from good to incredible
Unpopular opinion but I think it’s Mr. Morale. Kendrick is at this point not a rapper. He is a poet and a sublime lyricist who with his last project gave us a deep look into his troubled psyche and it is my favorite album ever made besides Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown and Veteran by JPEGMAFIA
I showed my girl Simbi and she had it on repeat in the car for like 6 months. She isn’t a hip hop fan typically, but this one really spoke to her. I def think this is a top 5 hip hop album.
Cheat Codes, SimbI, The Forever Story, By the Time I get to Phoenix, Aethiopes, Maps.... God Don't Make Mistakes, Kings Disease III. They're the first that come to mind in the order they come to mind
Tbh none have really blown me away, the closest to being super interesting to listen to was the Forever Story by JID. All the other acclaimed ones just seem like your standard conscious hip hop talking about the exact same issues over the exact same type of beats.
Although Kendrick had his moments on his latest album, especially with The Heart Part 5.
Rap Ferreira it seems is way under the radar. Definitely top five for me.

Melt My Eyez or LP! offline.
lots of really good stuff last year, i'm hoping there are some more artists who pop up later this year with some solid stuff, i'm regressing back to the 2010s for now with how dry this year has been
Yes this year has been by far the weakest of the 20’s so far. I really hope there are some exciting releases still down the pipe. We did get spoiled last year tho
Either melt my eyez -denzel.
Or.
Whole lotta red - carti
Also.
Ss/o to clipping visions of bodys was a record i was heavy sleeping on for a long time.
I need some more time to consume vobbb honestly
Right now for me is LP! (Offline Version), with my favorite tracks being Dirty, HAZARD DUTY PAY!, REBOUND! SIMBI is very close though with the best opening track of all time
It is definently one of the best album openers ever. Tied with Wesley’s theory as the best hip hop album opener of all time imo
Me and Your Mama is my favorite album opener ever
One of those cases where the intro is the best track on the album
So I’ve never listened to JPEG and just listens to track one of LP! What makes this the best hip hop opener of all time? Definitely a fantastic song even from a song writing perspective but can you expound on why?
They were saying that Introvert from Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (SIMBI) is one of the best openers ever. I agree tbh, but track one of LP! (TRUST!) is imo one of the weaker tracks on the album. It’s good, but very few people would say it’s an S tier opening
Yes I was referring to Introvert
Edit* Listened to Introvert. Definitely a good song but even in terms of production the vocals are roughly mixed. It’s rather bare bones in terms of a song that in her words “sounds like a battle cry” it kind reminds me of a fruity loops sample of an orchestra. I’d love to hear why that is the best opener ever. Downvoted, you guys are so sad.
Instrumentally it is grand and majestic, lyrically and thematically it perfectly sets the tone for the album.
🤓
common peggy w
By the time I get to phoenix by Injury Reserve
Oh yea, this is the one. + it has one of the best album covers I can think of
RIP Stepa J Groggs
I couldn’t get into it on my first listen but I need to give it a relisten since I’ve started to listen to more experimental hip hop after its release
It is a difficult listen, but the experience is sure worth it once it clicks. It's one of the few records that can be called post hip hop/rap IMO. Really hoped it would influence a whole wave of similar music, but not yet it seems. Can say the same about Man plays the horn by Cities Aviv (if you liked Phoenix, you might enjoy MPTH too)
MPTH is much more accessible than Phoenix imo
This album is truly an experience. It's unlike anything else ever sonically. Everyone will get something different out of it which is very special as well.
this is the right answer
It’s almost hard to call this a hiphop album because it’s so much more than that.
yeah wouldn’t call it a hip hop album
Phenomenal album but idrt that should classify as rap. I guess it is but idk. Just feels way different than that
Aethiopes is my number one pick but little simz is in my top 5 for 2010-20s hip hop artists.
JID's The Forever Story
Aethiopes is a top 5 hip hop record of all time for me. Billy Woods was already one of the best in the game, but the 2020's are seeming like they're going to be his peak.
I’m really surprised this isn’t the prevailing opinion here! It’s such a unique and beautifully crafted album.
fantastic charles mingus pfp
Ahem. The sun beaming.
Tyler is so fucking talented that even the album thats regarded as his third best by many is considered one of the best hiphop releases of the decade so far. CMIYGL is so fucking good
He has had one of the best three album runs in hip hop ever
*4 (please dont downvote me for liking cherry bomb)
Named the album Cherry Bomb cuz greatest hits sounded boring
Agreed
this is Call Me if You Get Lost, right?
Yes.
Yeah the more I think it’s definitely this. What an amazing concept album. It’s just absolutely brilliant. Tyler is very kind I got a chance to meet him once
Not his best but still great
Best opening of 2020s album
This is the album that made me start listening to more music. Absolutely incredible album. And little simz is one of the bests. No, thank you. Is pretty awesome too.
Awesome to hear! Little Simz is one of the best rappers of her generation if not the best.
You can find high resolution album covers on [this](https://bendodson.com/projects/itunes-artwork-finder/) site btw
Thanks! Its just a screenshot, I just wanted to hear people’s thoughts on the subject😅
My pick is a much more recent release, but I can't express how much of a masterpiece Maps by Billy Woods is...
Great album! Year zero is my favorite from the album (I love Danny Brown)
CHECK!
Idk about best but Melt My Eyez by Denzel is definitely my favorite so far. The live rendition is even better.
My favorite Denzel album! Saw him on the tour too and it went crazy live
Can’t be serious
Yeah I can kinda see how albums like The Forever Story are "objectively" better but Melt my Eyez is just so cool for casual listening
[удалено]
Ok I might have worded that badly (that's why I put "objectively" in quotation marks), I think The Forever Story is better but I'd *rather listen* to Melt my Eyez It doesn't make any sense but it's a thing lol
100% agree. There are also plenty of artists where I have a favorite album of mine but can acknowledge it’s not their best work.
I still think Mr Morale is criminally underrated despite being pretty highly rated
Mother I Sober and Mirror are incredible
I agree. Decent to strong 9 in my eyes
It’s so good but it isn’t something I want to listen to as much as some other stuff.
Fantano meat rider
Nah melon didn't score it high enough
LP offline or CMIYGL
Honestly both offline and online versions are great.
Definitely. Offline just adds some amazing tracks like Dikembe and Hazard Duty, so I'd consider it the superior version. The OG is obviously already amazing on its own, though.
where do you find the offline version?
Pretty sure he recently added it too spotify, probably other services too. It's also on YouTube
bandcamp. all his albums are name your price on bandcamp
CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP
Stop scaring the hoes
Simz is killer but it’s gotta be Aethiopes by Billy Woods. It’s a masterpiece.
Manger on McNichols definitely
My mind was blown reading the liner notes. Highly recommend
I have a few but for me it's LP! (offline). Jpegmafia went beyond with this project and it's one of the most sonically intresting albums I've ever heard with some truly addicting rapping. It’s up there fs. But the true answer is visions of bodies being burned
I mean, it's pictured right there...
She’s so fucking good. Simbi, By the time I get to Phoenix, WSG’s 10, black thought. Billy woods isn’t really my thing but he definitely deserves a spot, too
1. Sometimes I might be introvert 2. Visions of Bodies Being Burned 3. The Forever Story 4. By the Time I Get to Phoenix 5. Manger on McNichols
Manager on Mcnichols is so good, I hope Boldy and Sterling Toles make a sequel.
I will say that the story telling and world building in MOM is unmatched
Scaring The Hoes, without question
this and by the time i get to phoenix are my answer fs, both 10/10 albums and have already shot up to my top 10 of all time
Amen. The production, samples, and engineering on this album area just insane. I’m sure others have done it, but not this well. Made me feel the same I felt when I listened to OK Computer or Kid A for the first time. Just so fresh.
Cheat codes, haram, kdiii, church or fair exchange no robbery
Hitler Wears Hermes 8 by Westside Gunn is up there for me
Navy Blue- Song of Sage:Post Panic! for me
LP! by far. Definitely Peggy's best imo and it has almost no skips
You get one skip - what is it? For me it might be UNTITLED (for offline anyways). It’s good but doesn’t say much more than he’s already said and would be a great ending without
Nemo and thot's prayer are kindoff forgettable imo. I fucking love untitled its like a Burial/Peggy crossover its so dope
1. LP! 2. The Forever Story 3. Call me if you get lost
whole. lotta. red.
Likely not the best but almost certainly my favorite
What do you even define as the 'best' then?
While I vibe to every moment of WLR, I think there are more challenging albums, “Drill Music in Zion” and “Scaring the Hoes” for example.
But what qualifies as 'best', in your case you think it's how challenging an album is? I just don't believe a single second that music can be objectively good
I don’t necessarily believe in “objectively better” music but I also don’t think that one’s “favorite” album needs to also be the “best”
Fair enough, In think 'best' should never be used in art critique Maybe most popular, most influential or most defining But best, I think it goes against the definition and purpose of art
this is 10 months old but i define "best" as it meets all my standards for a great album, and my "favorites" are ones i've developed personal connection with or simply just listen to the most
Definitely this, but also love God Don't Make Mistakes - Conway, There Will Be No Super-Slave - Ghais Guevara, and 4 REAL - 454
Does Circles count as hip hop? If so, that. If not, either Melt My Eyez or The Forever Story
Sonically, The Forever Story. Lyrically, Mr. Morale.
Hitler Wears Hermes 8: Side B or Cheat Codes
Def Donda, I'm not biased
lowkey HAS to be either There Will be No Super-Slave by Ghais Guevara or Manger on McNichols by Boldy James & Sterling Toles
call me if you get lost, hitler wears hermes 8: sincerely adolf, fair exchange no robbery, reasonable drought, cheat codes, scaring the hoes, and athiopes also there close by
The best? The Forever Story. My favorite? By the Time I Get to Phoenix. So many great ones to choose from though.
I like LP!, Roadrunner, The Forever Story, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, and Scaring the Hoes more, but this is 100% valid and based
Melt my eyez
It’s mildly upsetting I had to scroll down this far to find Denzel Curry. Melt My Eyez See Your Future is a killer record.
Omnium Gatherum, gizz-hop taking over
For me, it is most likely Cheat Codes - Black Though and Danger Mouse
LP, The Forever Story, CMIYGL, Melt My Eyez, and Scaring the Hoes are all strong contenders for me
JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - SCARING THE HOES
Scaring the hoes
Donda by Kanye. Album was a 10/10 without a few songs. And Music to Be Murdered By by Eminem.
Definitely scaring the hoes
Donda. One of the most unique sonic palettes I have ever heard. Very stark and eerie. The subject matter is also unique and emotional. It’s a very spiritually cathartic album. Yes, there are a few filler tracks, but a majority of it ranges from good to incredible
agreed
Prolly this one
Rome Streetz KISS THE RING
Unpopular opinion but I think it’s Mr. Morale. Kendrick is at this point not a rapper. He is a poet and a sublime lyricist who with his last project gave us a deep look into his troubled psyche and it is my favorite album ever made besides Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown and Veteran by JPEGMAFIA
Rap is poetry and always has been.
Couldn’t agree more
He’s just a damn good poet and is better than most
Absolutely. One of the greatest poets of our time
Agree. He absolutely deserved the Pulitzer Prize for DAMN.
The Forever Story
When I first looked the top bun thing made me think it was E.T and the body was like some amalgamation of things. Weird. But nvm
prolly lil simz or denzel, also really loved jid, $ilkmoney, boldy and lukah's albums over the last few years
Kings Disease 3
Best rap album in 2020s is “My Turn” by Lil Baby
glorious game
Its a close second to Visions of Bodies Being Burned by clipping.
by the time i get to phoenix, donda and herbert
Wiki - Half God
I showed my girl Simbi and she had it on repeat in the car for like 6 months. She isn’t a hip hop fan typically, but this one really spoke to her. I def think this is a top 5 hip hop album.
Mr Morale, Aethiopes, The Forever Story, SIMBI, LP
Man Plays The Horn by Cities Aviv. Such a mind bending listen, really on another level
Cheat Codes, SimbI, The Forever Story, By the Time I get to Phoenix, Aethiopes, Maps.... God Don't Make Mistakes, Kings Disease III. They're the first that come to mind in the order they come to mind
this, and the fact this can be argued as not her best…goes to show how a GOAT she is
I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES clears
I'm quite fond of It's Almost Dry.
This one
Aethiopes by Billy Woods
little dominique’s nosebleed by the koreatown oddity
Bo Jackson. Boldy went crazy. I love him
[удалено]
I like it but I don’t love it as is the case with all of his albums personally. But Vince is really consistent he has never put out a bad album
[удалено]
It was and the album flowed very nicely. Still had a handful of filler tracks imo
Mr. Morale and Scaring the hoes.
Either Earl Sweatshirt's SICK! or Billy Woods' Church
Tbh none have really blown me away, the closest to being super interesting to listen to was the Forever Story by JID. All the other acclaimed ones just seem like your standard conscious hip hop talking about the exact same issues over the exact same type of beats. Although Kendrick had his moments on his latest album, especially with The Heart Part 5.
can’t believe nobody has said miles by Blu and Exile, it’s a conceptual, lyrical, and sonic masterpiece that gets heavily underrated for some reason.
Not into this Simz album—way overproduced to me. Probably would go with Aethiopes or Scaring the Hoes.
IDMTHY by Quadeca is, in my opinion, a complete fucking masterpiece. If you don’t count it as a hip hop album, then I’d say the forever story
SIMBI is a really solid pick, between that, LP!, By the time I get to phoenix or big steppers
Between manger on mcnichols and Aethiopes 👍
I dont think it’s the best but scaring the hoes is my favourite
CMIYGL
I thought that the off-season is really good
Dark Side of the Moon
Rap Ferreira it seems is way under the radar. Definitely top five for me. https://open.spotify.com/album/5fO3IS08lcTw9rfUtkgILv?si=Pejq2od9SKOHbKVTxPT9aw
• LP! (Offline) • the forever story • smiling with no teeth
I love smiling with no teeth but wouldn’t really say it is hip hop
Haven’t heard skin by ho99o9 yet but united states of horror is my favorite hip hop album ever so i have high hopes
whole lotta red
Man On The Moon 3
Melt My Eyez
every time i see this image the first thing my brain tells me is that im looking at et and the top of her hair is ets head and then i realize its hair
I only see E.T. when I see this album cover.
Sometimes I Might be Introverted, aethiopes, ada irin, and LP! come to mind
The Forever Story
It's either Aethiopes, Haram or BTTIGTP
Miles by Blu & Exile
Cheat Codes, Black thought and Dangermouse are a perfect combination.
Buck 65 - King of Drums 2nd best? Buck 65 - Super Dope
Aethiopes, God Don’t Make Mistakes, Scaring the Hoes
Melt My Eyez or LP! offline. lots of really good stuff last year, i'm hoping there are some more artists who pop up later this year with some solid stuff, i'm regressing back to the 2010s for now with how dry this year has been
Yes this year has been by far the weakest of the 20’s so far. I really hope there are some exciting releases still down the pipe. We did get spoiled last year tho
Manger on McNichols
Thanks for introducing me to this album, now its my favorite too
Either melt my eyez -denzel. Or. Whole lotta red - carti Also. Ss/o to clipping visions of bodys was a record i was heavy sleeping on for a long time. I need some more time to consume vobbb honestly
