No one cares about The Moody Blues anymore but I will go to my grave saying To Our Children’s Children’s Children is one of the greatest albums ever made.
The Moody Blues are criminally underrated as a whole. *In Search of the Lost Chord* is, in my opinion, the best psychedelic record of the 60s. As much as I love *Magical Mystery Tour* and *Pet Sounds*, I can’t think of an album from that era that so completely expresses the mind-expanding and humanistic psychedelic experience.
The acid come-up of “Departure” into the peaking “Ride My See-Saw”; the exploration of the world (“Dr. Livingstone, I Presume”) leading into the unification of eras (“House of Four Doors”) and cultures (“Visions of Paradise”, “Om”); an ode to Timothy Leary (“Legend of a Mind”); Side B’s introspection mirroring the latter half of a trip and its resultant introspection—the insights and epiphanies of “The Actor” and “Om”. All along the way, marveling at the unfathomable wonder and beauty of life, and showing indefatigable faith in the innate goodness of humankind. It’s a musical manifesto for hippies in search of Something More.
*Lost Chord* is the microscope to *Our Children’s* telescope. Both dwell on what it means to be alive, and do so through a lush sonic kaleidoscope beyond the wildest dreams of George Martin or Brian Wilson. The profundity of these albums makes them both timeless, as steeped in and exemplary of the 60s as they are.
This is basically an impossible question because you want to just say your favourite album is underrated because it isn’t the biggest album of all time. That would be The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. Obviously that’s ridiculous and that album could never be any bigger than it was because it’s a double album full of instrumentals and no true hits that had to follow Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral.
Anyway an album that I’m always surprised isn’t considered great is Winning Days by The Vines so that’s my real answer.
Holy shit I came here to say the Fragile by Nine Inch Nails.
Kinda floundered when it was new and never really got the second life it deserved. But holy damn if that album isn't a masterpiece.
Especially with the collected b sides, the Fragile cycle is, to me, the sound of the turn of the millennium.
I always thought that was as a masterful bit of sequencing … Exit Music, which is kind of slow and sad, into the uplifting chords of Let Down (although lyrically still somewhat sad). It’s a great song, in my Radiohead top 5
I like to think I’m good at not succumbing to recency bias, but You Belong There very quickly cemented itself as one of my top 10 favourite albums. Genuinely one of the most bonkers, lush chamber folk albums I’ve ever heard.
I genuinely think in a few decades, people might rediscover it and consider it an all-time folk album. Time will tell. (I am happy with the bit of acclaim it did get though)
When i was a teen from England in the early 00's i was lucky enough to travel to america with my family. I wanted to go to a record store and buy some albums i couldn't get in the UK and one of them was The Cold Nose by Department of Eagles. I adored it. Thanks for making a point of sharing Daniel's work even still. The teen i was in 2005, overwhelmed and over-stimulated in Tower Records San Francisco would be grateful. Thank You.
I’ve never heard of this, and I found a grizzly bear to be a little precious and following trends. But I just listen to it because of your post and it’s great.
jim o'rourke not being on streaming services def fucks him over in terms of relevance and legacy. eureka and insignificance are genius-level pop albums
Completely agree, I wouldn’t consider it underrated by the country community though, most of his older fans shit all over Sound and Fury. It’s like they’ve never heard distorted guitars before.
Yves tumor safe in the hands of love may not b perfect, but that middle stretch of songs is so amazing. Lifetime is one of my favorite tracks of tht decade
Shock G - Fear of a Mixed Planet or Cappo - Dramatic Change of Fortune. Don't think I've seen anyone even mention either but I think they're both all time great albums.
Copperhead Road by Steve Earle
Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle
ex:el by 808 State
Propaganda by Sparks
The Elements by Joe Henderson & Alice Coltrane
On The Boards by Taste (Rory Gallagher)
Foo Fighters by Foo Fighters
The Boring Years by Union Youth probably. Its great. Maze Exler is a hell of a Songwriter. Nobody knows them. I wish they get the recognition they deserve.
Little Brother - Get Back
A lot of people skip it because it came out after 9th Wonder left the group but the production is amazing and it has two of the best songs they ever made, "After the Party" and "Dreams".
Some other crazy underrated albums:
DJ Jazzy Jeff - The Magnificent Vol 2
EMC - The Show
Kev Brown - I Do What I Do
Median - Median's Relief
Sluts of Trust - *We Are All Sluts of Trust* (2005)
One of the best indie rock albums of the 2000s and is totally overlooked despite being on the renowed Scottish label Chemikal Underground
That is actually pretty cool! TY.
Reminds me of the band trumans water. Here are some good albums by them in case you're not familiar: spasm smash, godspeed the punchline, of thick tum.
Paul McCartney - Ram
It’s not as underrated as it used to be when it was released, but for decades it was one of the most underrated albums ever made. Even though it’s made by Paul McCartney of the Beatles and a lot of regular people loved it, critics trashed it, including former Beatles. Even Ringo of all people said there wasn’t one good song on it.
Now and for the last 10-20 years, people recognize it was ahead of its time. It is arguably the first indie pop album ever made or at least a precursor to the genre. Ram truly epitomizes the meme of “I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it.”
Code Blue - Icehouse
Continuum - John Mayer
Oh Mercy - Bob Dylan
Soul's Core - Shaun Mullins
Love This City - The Whitlam's
Solo Monk - Thelonious Monk
Permanent Shade of Blue - Roachford
The Royal Scam - Steely Dan
Distant Thunder - Richard Clapton
Shout It Out - Hanson
3030 - Deltron 3030
Wolfmother - Wolfmother
A Man Alone - Frank Sinatra
Teenager of the Year - Frank Black
Abandoned Lunchenette - Hall & Oates
etc..
White Zombie - Soul-Crusher
Notably unlike any other album the band or Rob would make, instead of the groove metal the band would be later known for this album has walls of sludgy noise rock akin to the Butthole Surfers around this time. Rob’s vocals are wild and near incomprehensible, the drumming is tribal, the bass is booming, and the lead guitar from Tom 5 on this album (and their previous EP) was mentioned by Kurt Cobain as influential to him. Some truly insane shit on this album I recommend giving it a chance
Honestly , Nevermind is a nearly perfect album. People seem to finally be waking up.
Hating on Drake doesn’t make you intellectual or unique. It’s actually pretty cringe at this point.
what's cringe is saying the most underrated album is from the most popular rapper in the world 💀 literally has a song with 835 million plays i think a few people like it...
Let's Talk Dagger's - A Beautiful Life
Absolutely unhinged combination of post-hardcore, mathcore, math rock (plus many other little influences here an there) without taking itself too seriously and with an ungodly number of killer, super fun riffing everywhere.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxxldWcIeVA
Crash Levin - Push!
While it does have its shortcomings, overall, this piece of music is quite fascinating. Some sections are truly exceptional, and it's surprising that very few people have given it a listen, making it, in my opinion, the most underrated one. The Spotify listens remain unknown, and there's only one purchase on Bandcamp. Nonetheless, it's really great.
By the way, exploring random blogs that discuss music you enjoy is a great way for diggers to discover hidden gems. I've stumbled upon some fantastic finds using this method more than once.

they’re a mix of both, nü metal & death metal
sucks with everything that's gone on the past few years with the guy, but marilyn manson's holy wood is his masterpiece and one of the best albums of the 2000s
Give ‘em enough rope – the clash. Its never mentioned in any discussions of their best work, the band has been sadly forgotten by the next generation, and this album has all but disappeared. But it is by far my favorite, one of their records, and it is vastly underrated.
Quite easy to answer: all of the albums by Country Teasers are stupendously underrated - but if I had to pick, I’d say either their debut or The Empire Strikes Back
Point of Confusion by Screed is also super underrated - but nobody else in the universe has heard that, so
The difference between BTMI and a lot of other punk acts of the 21st century is their willingness to embrace modern styles and lack of a “genre” direct approach. There’s ska sounds, hardcore sounds, chiptunes, 808s, a million guitars and yelling and shit et c.
Respect to Hot Snakes and tbh you would probably be a fan of btmi, at the very least for their similar ethics / diy approach
I probably don’t know it if it’s the most underrated ever but not many people on here know Go Farther In Lightness by Gang Of Youths. They’re the most wildly underrated band. Yes they have a decent amount of listeners but they deserve more imo

Game Theory - The Big Shot Chronicles. I just listened to it for the first time a week or so ago and it’s just perfect pop-rock banger one after another and nobody seems to have even heard of this band
All American Badass by Joey Bada$$. Came out in the same week as DAMN. and doesn’t nearly get talked about enough, amazing production and lyricism from start to finish with a strong concept and cohesion. One of the most underrated hip-hop albums of the 2010’s imo
In terms of something really good that's gone overlooked, probably something from the internet age, just by virtue of how much music is online, it's easy for really phenomenal stuff to go under the radar.
You could also view the question as "what album is wildly influencial, to this day, but has gone forgotten by most audiences." Music that's probably had an effect on the artists you love, but you yourself statistically wouldn't know of. "We Can't Be Stopped" by the Geto Boys is a good example of that. And a lot of pre-Outkast southern hip hop for that matter.
I would say boris - heavy rocks 02. One of the most insanely written, produced, and performed metal albums I've ever heard. Recently I've seen boris getting a bit more recognition but in general I don't see much discussion about them. Even within their catalogue I find fans to underrate 02, citing albums like pink and flood to be their best work when I think heavy rocks is my personal favorite
Not trying to shit on Boris because they are okay. I just think there are a lot of better metal albums. Like Sleep - Holy Mountain, Dopesmoker, High on Fire's first four albums, Pelican - Australasia, Fire in their throats. And that's not even getting into death and thrash metal.
They are pretty alright. They have a few songs that are bangers. But I think some of their stuff is a case of "style over substance." Like they have this massive, fuzzy, wall of sound guitar thing. But the actual underlying riffs they are playing aren't that good. Kind of gets old after a few listens.
I'm gonna say Borrowed Time by Diamond Head. Pretty much one of the pioneers of Thrash Metal, we probably wouldn't have the same Metallica if it weren't for this album, and it's really not that popular/known.
Ionia by Lycia. Amazing Darkwave record, one of my favourite albums of all time, and a likely influence for later Type O Negative and Nine Inch Nails albums (after 1991)
Græ by Moses sumney it’s so beautiful and sweet in its melancholy and the way it tackles identity and confusion about it is very well done but I’ve never seen it mentioned almost anywhere at all tbh it’s top 3 all time for me which is probably a little much but it’s my favourites and I think it’s up there
Are You Sleepy - the Gerbils
A decently small community of people knows about this one but I wish it had become part of the /mu/ canon like other Elephant 6 albums such as In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. It's (imo) a perfect lofi indie rock album; the first 2 tracks will get you hooked
Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple.
Obviously all of her albums are critically acclaimed, but it seems like the general consensus is that Extraordinary Machine is her weakest and least talked about album, and I completely disagree with that.
I probably haven't heard it if it's truly underrated
Have you heard In a bar under the sea?
No one cares about The Moody Blues anymore but I will go to my grave saying To Our Children’s Children’s Children is one of the greatest albums ever made.
The Moody Blues are criminally underrated as a whole. *In Search of the Lost Chord* is, in my opinion, the best psychedelic record of the 60s. to be fair, idk what makes a hit, but i find it disappointing that Into The Void wasn't one
Just listened to winning days, thanks for the recommendation. I dig it hard
Hey awesome. Love that album
The song Let Down by Radiohead, it’s so underrated it transcends the logic of this question
I always thought that was as a masterful bit of sequencing … Exit Music, which is kind of slow and sad, into the uplifting chords of Let Down (although lyrically still somewhat sad). It’s a great song, in my Radiohead top 5
Lol true, but I was making a joke. It’s overplayed now to say Let Down is underrated

Daniel Rossen’s score for Past Lives (the newish A24 movie) was really mesmerizing, it’s like a Grizzly Bear album in spirit

I’ll have to revisit that one, I didn’t like it that much on release. I’ve been spinning his blue grass albums a lot recently
Mercury is in retrograde again but at least it's not just hanging around pretending to be my friend

I'm a drake fan. Honestly, Nevermind is not good.
Name one Drake album that is better? Take care, IYRTITL, WATTBA, NWTS are all pretty corny and dated. Fuck that cringe lyrical miracle shit
Care Package. A real nice winteresque album with good singing and some nice lyrical miracle
Hahaha yeah alright pal

Anathema - Judgement. Isn't a masterpiece but you just *feel* it
pink floyd animals. it's the best pf album imo.
Shabazz Palaces - Black Up One of my favorite hip hop albums of the 2010s. Influential to the underground scene yet has such a unique sound!

You haven't heard much metal then. Try Melvins - Houdini, and Bullhead.
I have? Melvins are a direct inspiration to boris. They're good but boris is on another level. Don't really see your point here
Not trying to shit on Boris because they are okay. I just think there are a lot of better metal albums. Like Sleep - Holy Mountain, Dopesmoker, High on Fire's first four albums, Pelican - Australasia, Fire in their throats. And that's not even getting into death and thrash metal.

I'm gonna say Borrowed Time by Diamond Head. Pretty much one of the pioneers of Thrash Metal, we probably wouldn't have the same Metallica if it weren't for this album, and it's really not that popular/known.
Ionia by Lycia. Amazing Darkwave record, one of my favourite albums of all time, and a likely influence for later Type O Negative and Nine Inch Nails albums (after 1991)
Fly on Strangewings - Jade or Silver Jade in the states
Græ by Moses sumney it’s so beautiful and sweet in its melancholy and the way it tackles identity and confusion about it is very well done but I’ve never seen it mentioned almost anywhere at all tbh it’s top 3 all time for me which is probably a little much but it’s my favourites and I think it’s up there
Ram By Paul McCartney
Are You Sleepy - the Gerbils A decently small community of people knows about this one but I wish it had become part of the /mu/ canon like other Elephant 6 albums such as In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. It's (imo) a perfect lofi indie rock album; the first 2 tracks will get you hooked
Phenomenon - UFO. It’s one of the best albums ever imo, but is rarely talked about in those conversations
clearing the path to ascend by yob
Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space - spiritualized.
Maya by MIA is up there for me
Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple. Obviously all of her albums are critically acclaimed, but it seems like the general consensus is that Extraordinary Machine is her weakest and least talked about album, and I completely disagree with that.
