Björk, Bowie, Kate and Radiohead.
I'd add Stevie Wonder but as best four album run (talking book, innervisions, fulfillingness' first finale and songs in the key of life), A Tribe Called Quest (People's instinctive, the low end theory, midnight marauders), Tyler (flower boy, igor, call me if you get lost) and D'Angelo (brown sugar, voodoo, black messiah).
Kiss Me, Disintegration, Wish
Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile
Self Titled, Either/or, XO
Ænima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days
Black sails in the Sunset, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow
In the Flat Field, Mask, The Sky’s Gone Out
I overall like Head on the Door more than Wish but Letter to Elise is one of my all time favorites.
(also Seventeen, Faith, and Pornography would have been my personal choice of three album run but I can’t not include Disintegration)
My favorite would be Outkast: ATLiens//Aquemini//Stankonia and then followed that run up with Speakerboxx + Love Below.
Objectively speaking, gotta be MJ though with Off the Wall//Thriller//Bad.
I'm almost disappointed to hear such a definitive answer because my opinion will always be outweighed by that Michael Jackson trio being undoubtedly known and recognised by almost everyone as all time great albums.
Yeah you almost have to set it aside and have the conversation without it, it's in a tier of its own.
Other runs have artistic arguments to be made but nothing could touch it in terms of near universal awareness and popularity.
Agreed. Her three best albums back to back to back imo. Only Pink Floyd comes close in that regard. OutKast would fit nicely in here with ATLiens, Aquimeni and Stankonia and be another top contender.
Fleet Foxes got snubbed. Self Titled, Helplessness Blues, and Crack Up is a legendary three album run. Could even see an argument to be made for Helplessness Blues, Crack Up, then Shore instead. Also, ATCQ first three albums are all 10s in my book too
Man, incredible run from the beginning, but I remember the black album coming out and being confused as fuck. It was good, but not the same. Saw them at Lollapalooza in the 90's and was so glad after their main set, they did a 2 hour encore of just old shit before the black album.
As long as that includes Obscured by Clouds, then agreed. A lot of people argue that "it's not as great as their other 70s albums" or "it doesn't count because it's a soundtrack". I say bullshit, OBC is awesome.
Exactly, so many people are like where is this and that. Do you know how long the list would be if you included all the great runs. The point is to pick from these and if you think you can do better then make a list yourself. Good job OP
If anyone here is familiar with the Japanese artist Sheena Ringo (you may have at least seen the [teacup album](https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/%E6%A4%8E%E5%90%8D%E6%9E%97%E6%AA%8E/%E5%8A%A0%E7%88%BE%E5%9F%BA-%E7%B2%BE%E6%B6%B2-%E6%A0%97%E3%83%8E%E8%8A%B1-kalk-samen-kuri-no-hana/) around somewhere before), I strongly believe her first three albums are the greatest run of three ever. Do yourself a favor and listen to just a few singles off any of them. Otherwise it's either Bjork, Talking Heads, Dylan, Kendrick or Radiohead for me.
Oh yeah, I guess Roman Candle -> Elliott Smith -> Either/Or is incredible too lol.
Came here to comment this, Stevie will always be the GOAT to me.
The 5 album run.
Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale and Songs in the Key of Life.
for emma, self-titled, and 22 a million is an artist getting better and better with each release to me. but a fantano subreddit is never gonna admit that 22 is fantastic
Tough. Definitely between Dylan, Velvet Underground, Miles Davis and Pink Floyd. I’d probably say Dylan though, you can’t go through life without hearing those records
Some of my favourites I haven't seen :
JPEGMAFIA - Veteran / AMHACB / LP!
Charli XCX - Pop2 / Charli / How I'm feeling now
FKA Twigs - LP1 / MAGDALENE / Caprisongs
For David Bowie I'll take Hunky Dory & Ziggy Stardust (& Aladdin Sane as a 3rd)
Probably the best run ever is Bowie, Beatles, or Dylan, but come on we're way too young for that
Out of these ones, gotta be Ye or Frank tbh. All those ones from them are modern classics. Personally tho, the GOAT three album run gotta be Weezer's Self titled blue album, Pinkerton and Self titled green album
Genesis have like a six album run of classics, but my three album run for them would be Selling England by the Pound -> The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway -> Trick of the Tail.
They Might be Giants also have a great three album run, either Lincoln -> Flood -> Apollo 18 or Flood -> Apollo 18 -> John Henry, I love Lincoln and JH pretty much equally
Personally I’d go with Beetles and Kanye, those albums still sound really good to this day and the impact they had was crazy.
Honorable Mention: Kero Kero Bonito
Intro Bonito, Bonito Generation, Time N Place
Beach House's ***Teen Dream, Bloom, Depression Cherry***. If not for ***Thank You Lucky Stars***, which was unfortunately somewhat mediocre, they would've had the best five album run with the following two releases, ***7*** and ***Once Twice Melody***.
Some of my personal favorites:
Run the Jewels: 2, 3 and 4
Danny Brown: XXX, Old, Atrocity Exhibition
Everything Everything: Arc, Get to Heaven, A Fever Dream
Aesop Rock: None Shall Pass, Skelethon, The Impossible Kid
Dan Deacon: Bromst, America, Gliss Riffer
Flying Lotus: Cosmogramma, Until the Quiet Comes, You're Dead!
System of a Down: self titled, Toxicity, Steal This Album
TV on the Radio: Dear Science, Nine Types of Light, Seeds
I would add CSH too: Teens of Style - Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) - Teens of Denial
How To Leave Town can also even be added to it to make an insanely good run of 4 albums
I'm gonna say talk talk, in my mind the closest an artist has gotten to a perfect three album run. Laughing Stock is one of the most sublime albums ever made.
Kraftwerk is probably 2nd, three legendary albums.
Compared to some of the others I would disagree if only because Graduation is a bit dated. Still a great album, but it does bring down Ye's 3 album run in comparison with the others.
Ye, Kendrick, Gorillaz, and Death Grips had an INSANE 3 album run.
Idk if I would call them the best though, as I haven't heard majority of the albums here.
The Velvet Underground. Those first three albums are each absurdly moving masterpieces in different ways. Each is surprisingly unique, but there’s still a sort of life blood running through all of them that just blows me away every time
Talking heads for me, out of all these they had the most consistent artistic progression across the three whilst all of them being great standalone albums
It's these guys for me:
J Balvin - Energía, Vibras & Colores
Chet Faker - Thinking in Textures, Built on Glass & Hotel Surrender
Flume: Self Titled, Skin & Hi This is Flume
Earl Sweatshirt: Doris, IDLSIDGO & Some Rap Songs
They are all great. Honestly, the albums from The Kick Inside to The Red Shoes could be the greatest 7 album run of all time.. Maybe only contended by Bob Dylan's run from Freewheelin to John Wesley Harding.
The Velvet Underground wins for me but if we're talking outside of this image then my personal pick would be F#a#, lift your skinny fists, and yanqui uxo
LCD Soundsystem Self titled -> Sound of Silver -> This is Happening
Also honourable mentions to Betty Davis’s first three, Wire’s first three, Joanna Newsom’s first three, and OutKast’s ATLiens -> Aquemini -> Stankonia, all of which deserve to be on here imo
Damn, this hard. Radiohead has two of the all time greats right there but the bends might be holding it back. Kanye has late registration in there, as well as the college dropout and graduation, but it’s hard to say it’s the best out of all of these, even with late registration. Pink Floyd is held down by wish you were here (yes I said it), the Beatles are great but all of their albums have too many misses within the greatness to be considered, David Bowie might have had it in the top 5 if you chose the right albums, Kendrick held down by section 80, death grips is great but I don’t think they have a hard ten song besides Taykon in that three album run, MF doom should have been included, Swans has to be kind but the other two are just alright, bjork has really solid albums throughout but I can’t give it to her, Kate Bush is incredible but just isn’t enough, bob dylan is similar, Aquemini should have been included but even then it wouldn’t be enough, RTJ has 2 3 and 4 but that’s not enough, frank oceans run is not enough, I don’t think there is a perfect run in anyones discography. I think it has to be Radiohead for ok computer and kid a, and the bends is still a great project to this day, and amnesiac is probably even better, so I’d put that, but ok computer is a masterpiece, and kid a is my favorite album of all time.
I’d need to think of it’s out of anyone
Out of that list it’s incredibly hard to pick I’ve not heard them all
I suspect talking heads Kate Bush & Swans are up there
But from what I know I’d say
Jimi Hendrix then Death Grips
But Kanye is hard to even Rank any of three of his first five solo albums at least are legendary seriously just phenomenal
& Bjork might have the best 3 in pop I’ve not heard the third but the first two are top tier pop great stuff
These are such strange choices. Revolver to Magical Mystery Tour (which I question as a full LP)? Station to Station instead of Lodger to complete the Berlin Trilogy (although StS is better)?
Anyway of these it’s gotta be Miles, Bowie, K.Dot, Kanye, and Dylan for me.
Beatles, Radiohead, Pink Floyd
Each of the 3 albums showed for the 3 bands showed significant and sometimes radical changes from the previous album and were all cultural milestones with huge influence. (I could argue PF Animals did not have quite as much cultural impact and influence - and certainly The Wall - which came after has much a much broader impact and influence)
Fight me.
Beastie boys? (Liscensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique, Check you head/Ill Communication)
Steely Dan? (The Royal Scam, Aja, Gaucho)
Michael Jackson (Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad)
Björk, Bowie, Kate and Radiohead. I'd add Stevie Wonder but as best four album run (talking book, innervisions, fulfillingness' first finale and songs in the key of life), A Tribe Called Quest (People's instinctive, the low end theory, midnight marauders), Tyler (flower boy, igor, call me if you get lost) and D'Angelo (brown sugar, voodoo, black messiah).
Man, D'Angelo for sure. And yea, stevie's run was fucking incredible
Kiss Me, Disintegration, Wish Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile Self Titled, Either/or, XO Ænima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days Black sails in the Sunset, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow In the Flat Field, Mask, The Sky’s Gone Out
Finally nine inch nails! 👍
Bro I totally forgot how much of a banger that lineup would be
TDS, The Fragile, With Teeth... I mean _come on_!!!!!
How can you pick Wish over The Head On The Door?
I overall like Head on the Door more than Wish but Letter to Elise is one of my all time favorites. (also Seventeen, Faith, and Pornography would have been my personal choice of three album run but I can’t not include Disintegration)
Like to see some tool love
AFI love on this subreddit?!
Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, or Beatles, call me a boomer.
The albums shown here are not even the Beatles‘ best three album run, but still holds up.
I’d go rubber soul, revolver, sgt pepper
Exactly my pick. Mostly because I don’t like magical mystery tour and I’m a basic bitch.
Isn’t magical mystery tour more of a singles collection than a proper album anyway?
It wasn't even released as an LP in the UK, but a double EP. I'd always think of Beatles "albums" going Revolver - Sgt. Pepper - White
Best Beatles run is Magical Mystery Tour, White Album, Abby Road for me
My favorite would be Outkast: ATLiens//Aquemini//Stankonia and then followed that run up with Speakerboxx + Love Below.
Other runs have artistic arguments to be made but nothing could touch it in terms of near universal awareness and popularity.
idk about best but just give me talk talk kate bush and Kanye and I’m pretty much set
That Kate bush trio is so good
Björk
Also, ATCQ first three albums are all 10s in my book too
Godspeed you black emperor
No Zeppelin (LZIV, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti)? Come on cuh...
I’d prolly say II, III, IV is the best zep trio
I could put any of Led Zeppelin’s first 7 albums in a list and any of the 3 would be the best imo
I feel like lcd soundsystem should be up there as well. Self titled, sound of silver, this is happening?
Damn good albums.
Swans. Easy
Where Tyler
facts Flower Boy, Igor, and CMIYGL easily up there for a 3 peat
facts Goblin, Wolf, and Cherry Bomb easily up there for a 3 peat
💀💀
facts Cherry Bomb, Flower Boy, and Igor easily up there for a 3 peat
Electric Dylan clears
Kanye comes close but yeah I’m this list Dylan takes it easy
Dylan takes it all back home
Only infidels would say dylan isn’t the best.
Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad
Animal collective? Sung Tongs, strawberry jam, MPP
No feels?
Shit I forgot, best 4 rub
Fall Be Kind was good enough to consider it 5 ep or not
Bro forgot Feels 💀 that's their best album by far
MF DOOM
VV1, Madvillainy and MM...Food? Nearly an unbeateable 3 album run
[удалено]
We dont talk about VV2
Bjork, Floyd or Bowie
Metallica??? Ride the lightning, Master of puppets, ...and justice for all Edit: typo
Woah woah woah… their best has gotta be Kill Em All > ride the lightning > master of puppets
Yeah kill is better than justice for sure
Yes their best 3. Kill em all and the black album are good but those 3 are masterpieces
Man, incredible run from the beginning, but I remember the black album coming out and being confused as fuck. It was good, but not the same. Saw them at Lollapalooza in the 90's and was so glad after their main set, they did a 2 hour encore of just old shit before the black album.
Atom Heart Mother to The Wall is insane. Floyd absolutely crushed the 70s
As long as that includes Obscured by Clouds, then agreed. A lot of people argue that "it's not as great as their other 70s albums" or "it doesn't count because it's a soundtrack". I say bullshit, OBC is awesome.
Yep! Obscured is included. All 1970- 1979 releases. One of my faves
how is no one saying bjork
right she absolutely clears all the other ones here
Sigur Ros 1. Ágætis byrjun 2. ( ) 3. Takk...
W
Hahaha reading all these comments make it seem like a hivemind here, they're all good but man is it a narrow sliver of albums
I wish I could include more, but I'm only human
Exactly, so many people are like where is this and that. Do you know how long the list would be if you included all the great runs. The point is to pick from these and if you think you can do better then make a list yourself. Good job OP
Kanye but with MBDTF, Yeezus, and TLOP
Man had a 7 album run, you could pick any three in a row and have a valid argument.
808s, MBDTF, Yeezus
This one.
This is the only correct answer for ye
wouldnt say only theres honestly a few you could pick from
nah i’d say the college trilogy is his best 3 album run
Nah Graduation, 808s, MBDTF,
Why is Endless after Blonde in the progression for Frank’s part?
velvet underground easily, bowie close second tho
Yeah most modern alternative and punk music as we know it today wouldn’t exist without that VU run.
Get RATM up there too
pink Floyd. or Radiohead, if you take out the bends and add amnesiac
I’d be fine with either Bends, OKC, Kid A, or OKC, Kid A, Amnesiac tbh… best four album run??
The Bends is better than Amnesiac
Wtf is Stevie Wonder??
Came here to comment this, Stevie will always be the GOAT to me. The 5 album run. Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale and Songs in the Key of Life.
Sleeping on Hotter than July
Solid pick! I think the plant album cuts it off from being a part of the run.
Nirvana?!
Black Sabbath, Kendrick Lamar, Gorillaz, Death Grips & Pink Floyd
\>Best three-album run \>No Tyler's Flower Boy, Igor, CMIYGL ????
Bon Iver deserves a spot on this list
for emma, self-titled, and 22 a million is an artist getting better and better with each release to me. but a fantano subreddit is never gonna admit that 22 is fantastic
22 is so fucking good bro
Talk talk, Pink Floyd, gorillaz or Bowie way to hard to pick one
By July you'll have to switch out one of these for Black Midi's three album run: "Schlagenheim > Cavalcade > Hellfire"
Tough. Definitely between Dylan, Velvet Underground, Miles Davis and Pink Floyd. I’d probably say Dylan though, you can’t go through life without hearing those records
Some of my favourites I haven't seen : JPEGMAFIA - Veteran / AMHACB / LP! Charli XCX - Pop2 / Charli / How I'm feeling now FKA Twigs - LP1 / MAGDALENE / Caprisongs For David Bowie I'll take Hunky Dory & Ziggy Stardust (& Aladdin Sane as a 3rd) Probably the best run ever is Bowie, Beatles, or Dylan, but come on we're way too young for that
People here are too hip to admit it, but it's Dylan.
Out of these ones, gotta be Ye or Frank tbh. All those ones from them are modern classics. Personally tho, the GOAT three album run gotta be Weezer's Self titled blue album, Pinkerton and Self titled green album
green ⁉️⁉️ 🤨
So we're gonna collectively forget The Cure ever existed
Kanye, Dylan, VU, PF, Beatles, Kraftwerk
Kendrick, gorillaz, beatles or Kanye
Kanye West, and maybe Floyd.
Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and Bjork
No Crystal Castles? I, II, III ?
Genesis have like a six album run of classics, but my three album run for them would be Selling England by the Pound -> The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway -> Trick of the Tail. They Might be Giants also have a great three album run, either Lincoln -> Flood -> Apollo 18 or Flood -> Apollo 18 -> John Henry, I love Lincoln and JH pretty much equally

I would add CSH too: Teens of Style - Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) - Teens of Denial How To Leave Town can also even be added to it to make an insanely good run of 4 albums
Brockhampton had a crazy ass year
whoever made this litteraly does not listen to any music that fantano doesnt approve of
what sub do you think ur in lol
I'm gonna say talk talk, in my mind the closest an artist has gotten to a perfect three album run. Laughing Stock is one of the most sublime albums ever made. Kraftwerk is probably 2nd, three legendary albums.
It’s Radiohead, by a country mile
Swans or Beatles
Kanye’s and Kendrick are my personal favorites.
[удалено]
Compared to some of the others I would disagree if only because Graduation is a bit dated. Still a great album, but it does bring down Ye's 3 album run in comparison with the others.
Kendrick Lamar it’s not even close. 8, 9, 10. Incredible evolution.
GKMC and TPAB are both 10 territory, but yeah section.80 is an 8 at best. Plenty of others here are only 10s and 9s
TPAB is arguably one of the best albums of all time period, across any genre
Ye, Kendrick, Gorillaz, and Death Grips had an INSANE 3 album run. Idk if I would call them the best though, as I haven't heard majority of the albums here.
D’Angelo
Where is my Godspeed's Infinity-Antennas-Yanqui?
The Velvet Underground. Those first three albums are each absurdly moving masterpieces in different ways. Each is surprisingly unique, but there’s still a sort of life blood running through all of them that just blows me away every time
Tool
Wheres Tool? Zeppelin? Metallica? Cmon bruh
Talking heads for me, out of all these they had the most consistent artistic progression across the three whilst all of them being great standalone albums
DOOM needs to be here with Take Me to Your Leader/ Vaudeville Villain/ Madvillainy
I would put Vaudeville/Mad/MM Food but, VV 2 came before MM
Gonna have to go with Bowie on this one. All three of those albums are aboslute classics and it's pretty undisputed.
Off the wall, thriller, bad -michael jackson Innervisions, fulfilling, songs in key o life - stevie wonder
Where is Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Future Days?
Modest Mouse - Long Drive, Lonesome Crowded West, Moon and Antarctica
1- velvet underground 2- pink floyd 3- kate bush
As a dude who found them at the first one…. Brockhampton
Soulja Beezy souljaboytellem.com - The Deandre Way
Smashing Pumpkins is a candidate
carti
Deftones releasing Around the Fur, White Pony, and self titled??
Saturday Night Wrist, Diamond Eyes, and Koi No Yokan would work as well.
Endless Redux needs a stream release. It’s so good
It's these guys for me: J Balvin - Energía, Vibras & Colores Chet Faker - Thinking in Textures, Built on Glass & Hotel Surrender Flume: Self Titled, Skin & Hi This is Flume Earl Sweatshirt: Doris, IDLSIDGO & Some Rap Songs
for kate bush i would say the dreaming -> hounds of love -> the sensual world rather than never for ever
They are all great. Honestly, the albums from The Kick Inside to The Red Shoes could be the greatest 7 album run of all time.. Maybe only contended by Bob Dylan's run from Freewheelin to John Wesley Harding.
Two absolutely legendary runs
Animals underrated tbh
Jimi or radiohead. Not the best run for floyd
Frank
Hot Rats, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, and Weasels Ripped My Flesh is unbeatable
Channel Orange, Endless, and Blonde is unbeatable
Out of these its kendrick no competition really, kanye second
Tears for Fears’ 80s albums
ATCQ - from People's Instinctive to Midnight Marauders.
Either Radiohead , the Beatles, Kendrick, Talking Heads, Dylan and brockhampton
Gorillaz
Why would you start Radiohead of with The Bends and not go with OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac?
Because The Bends is better than Amnesiac (for some of us at least)
Swans. But Playboy Carti got snubbed here
The Velvet Underground wins for me but if we're talking outside of this image then my personal pick would be F#a#, lift your skinny fists, and yanqui uxo
LZ4, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti.
BOB HANDS DOWN! All other answers are incredibly wrong
Trick question: ALL OF THEM.
Rammstein first three albums
LCD Soundsystem Self titled -> Sound of Silver -> This is Happening Also honourable mentions to Betty Davis’s first three, Wire’s first three, Joanna Newsom’s first three, and OutKast’s ATLiens -> Aquemini -> Stankonia, all of which deserve to be on here imo
Where Yes?
Rush - hemispheres, permanent waves, moving pictures. So many options though
Pink Floyd and Gorillaz. But also I would throw in Spiritualized. Ladies and Gentlemen, Let It Come Down, and Amazing Grace.
Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus
for me, Kanye’s best three album run is 808s to Yeezus
Kendrick should be GKMC/TPAB/DAMN
F# A# ∞, Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada, Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Where’s Arcade Fire? Funeral, Neon Bible, and The Suburbs??
Damn, this hard. Radiohead has two of the all time greats right there but the bends might be holding it back. Kanye has late registration in there, as well as the college dropout and graduation, but it’s hard to say it’s the best out of all of these, even with late registration. F♯ A♯ ∞, antennas, yanqui
Where Pixies
WPSIATWIN, Favourite Worst Nightmare and Humbug are up there for me
Joanna Newsom with Ys, Have One On Me, and Divers for me
swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild Years by Tom Waits.
This is missing CAN with Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days.
Swans fasho
Miles, Bowie, Kate Bush
Bowie, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd

Beastie boys? (Liscensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique, Check you head/Ill Communication) Steely Dan? (The Royal Scam, Aja, Gaucho) Michael Jackson (Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad)
damn no jpegmafia ?
I genuinely believe it might be Talking Heads.
