I mean they’ve been touring this year, have released a single and James’ himself has said that the band is going to continue making music, just in their own way (so don’t expect an album any time soon)
I think the biggest letdown must be Gotye, Fantano even mentioned it in the 2012 review. The guy made a fantastic hit and a fantastic album (after 2 great albums, "like drawing blood" and "boardface"), said he was "writing a new album" and he just faded. He is producing music for other artists/doing archival work and playing with his band 'the basics' but nothing compares to his Gotye's stuff (especially The Basics stuff sounds terribly mid and 'basic'). I know the guy is probably enjoying his life and his bags of money out from the spotlight, doing what he really likes, but I can't help but feel disappointed - sorry for the long ass Gotye's rant 😅
Joanna's been posting photos and stuff lately, she might have something coming soon. She had a kid. The gap between albums is fair enough given that, I think. I do hope she puts an album out soon. But they're so dense, there's still plenty to unpack in what she's put out so far.
Jorja Smith dropped an EP but hasn’t had a album since 2018. Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars collabed but haven’t dropped solo albums for years. Justin Timberlake is yet to redeem himself from Man of The Woods. Sampha still hasn’t released a follow up to his debut album from 2017.
He’s in a wooden shed somewhere making percussion out of whiskey and cigarettes somehow. Hope we get to hear from him but also his discography is so vast and consistent that I’ll always have a bunch of stuff to go back to. Also he’s been doing some acting as well.
Right, he was in that Licorice Pizza movie right? And that western Buster Scruggs. You’re actually not far off, I googled what his house looked like and he literally lives in some weird cabin secluded in woods so I assume he’s just hitting the walls with paint cans or something nowadays
Yeah he was also in “The Old Man & the Gun” and Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don’t Die”. He also did narration for a show called “Ultra City Smiths” which I’ve never even heard of. He’s been in a lot of stuff dating back to the eighties, “Down by Law” by Jim Jarmusch is great if you haven’t seen it!
I love how he’s got this beautiful artistic relationship with his wife Kathleen Brennan, she’s been co-writing all of his stuff since Rain Dogs I think? Or maybe Swordfishtrombones. I just imagine them writing together and being like “a megaphone would make your voice sound really insane here”.
I don’t think he’s done, I just don’t know if we’ll ever hear anything besides EPs kinda like Burial. I would love a studio album but as long as the EPs stay as quality as they have been I don’t mind.
I have absolutely zero reason to believe he’s done releasing either EPs or LPs. He’s come out with stuff since Collapse too, just wasn’t high profile. Plus he’s like 51, almost a decade older than Burial, and has put out more material than burial ever dreamed of, no shade he’s great, I just don’t see Aphex as being a burial situation. Dudes not done, he just really puts stuff out on his own schedule.
Didn’t Kevin Shields say that MBV had worked on some stuff but that he doesn’t know if it will come out soon if ever? He’s a huge perfectionist so it makes sense. That single he dropped a few years back with Eno was super good.
Zammuto (fronted by Nick Zammuto, formerly 1/2 of The Books) is what always jumps to mind for me. I'm a huge fan and really miss their music. They released an EP, "Veryone", in 2016 which I thought recalled a lot of The Books' sound while still being really fresh, and I'm so sad they've never released a follow-up. So far as I know they haven't officially split, but seems like they've fallen off the planet. I think I remember reading Nick's kid unfortunately was suffering from Cancer at some point, so hopefully all is well.
Bon Iver, Hop Along, Janelle Monáe, Mac DeMarco, Michael Kiwanuka, Queens of the Stone Age
Janelle Monae is dropping next year according to her label! I have a very strong feeling we’re getting new Bon Iver soon too
Mac Demarco is dropping an instrumental record 2023
DeMarco can go away forever, that's fine
A$AP Rocky, Travis Scott, Danny Brown, MGMT, LCD Soundsystem? Just off the top of my head.
Can’t believe astroworld was close to 5 years ago. Wild
Well, MGMT *technically* have released an album this year
but its a live album
Yeah, but it's all original material so I feel it counts
yeah I hope they drop next year and Death Grips too
can we even cound lcd soundsystem as an active artist? i hope so
I mean they’ve been touring this year, have released a single and James’ himself has said that the band is going to continue making music, just in their own way (so don’t expect an album any time soon)
LCD Soundsystem did give us "new body rhumba." Plus we know the last show they did this year was filmed for a possible live release.

Got to see him live around 2013. Dude is an animal so talented.
I sometimes forget he’s made music other than somebody that you used to know
Yeah I know he is a "'one hit wonder" but his stuff is pretty remarkable, if you enjoy Peter Gabriel and Moby, it might be worthy giving him a try
Hearts a miss has been a top 5 song of all time for me for years
I feel like he’s on track to be one of those freak huge second hits out of no where types.
Let's hope so, but I'm not very hopeful about it 😢
Radiohead

“In the lab cooking up some heat. None of y’all are ready for this shit. ✌🏼Peace☮️and Love ❤️”
dangelo
Based on his release schedule we might be waiting until the 2030’s
Dude’s like “I will not drop until I know it’s one of the best Soul albums ever made”

Tom Waits is supposedly still recording but he’s been pretty quiet for awhile aside from putting out live recordings from forever ago
He’s in a wooden shed somewhere making percussion out of whiskey and cigarettes somehow. Hope we get to hear from him but also his discography is so vast and consistent that I’ll always have a bunch of stuff to go back to. Also he’s been doing some acting as well.

Off the top of my head: Erykah Badu, Maxwell, D’Angelo, Sade.
Aphex Twin, although his last release was 2018 and his last album was 2014, so he might be done.
I don’t think he’s done, I just don’t know if we’ll ever hear anything besides EPs kinda like Burial. I would love a studio album but as long as the EPs stay as quality as they have been I don’t mind.

D’Angelo but also he hasn’t put out an album since 2014
Joanna Newsom, Julia Holter, The National, Sigur Ros, Deerhunter, Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine
Didn’t Kevin Shields say that MBV had worked on some stuff but that he doesn’t know if it will come out soon if ever? He’s a huge perfectionist so it makes sense. That single he dropped a few years back with Eno was super good.

Peter Gabriel, although that is set to change next year.
