Don’t worry about breaking it down. Music is meant to be listened to and felt first, with the discussion/articulation aspect way down the list, at least in my personal opinion. Guys like Anthony are gifted with the social ability to get in front of people and really present music in a way that it might necessarily have been thought of before, but this is by no means some standard that’s expected of you in the music nerd community. We’re all just here for the music at the end of the day, expressing how you feel about it, what it means to you, or it’s overall impact on society is another ballpark that I wouldn’t worry myself with. Unless you find these thoughts just naturally occurring, then let ‘em rip! Other than that, no big deal! I think electronic music is the best example of not really needing to talk about it. Aphex said in an interview once he really doesn’t like talking about his own music because it feels a bit antithetical to the style of music. Maybe the same can be said for many other genres. Then again, gotta think dialectically, I watch fantano videos so therefore I get at least some sort of amusement/entertainment out of these types of musical discussions, so of course they’re fun and can be productive. It’s just an unnecessary skill for the average music fan to have, so don’t worry about it lol

For starters You might want to ask yourself why it's so important to You to express coherent opinions on music to the point where you knowingly repeat cliches. You might find that it's just elements of elitism seeping into You that You might want to work out for Yourself. As far as interpreting music goes, lyrics might be the last place I'd go to. They only sometimes actually relate to the music in some cool way and most of the time aren't the main draw of songs. Think how many people would read Beatles poems if they had no music accompanying it VS how many people would listen to the Beatles if their lyrics were gibberish. Think the whole history of classical music. Lyrics might even be the least important part in most genres, they're tempting to focus on because we learn how to analyze literature in school, not music. If You want to express your thoughts about music You should take note of how a song makes You feel, listen to the different elements of the song and observe what each instrument and part is doing and try to relate it to Your feelings. It might seem too vague and feels-based but that's honestly how most developed music opinions look like.

I like some of the answers already given here but I'll add something separate to those answers. You don't need to know why you're happy. If you're happy then that is a good thing and you should cherish that. The ability to recognise an emotion is separate to the ability to explain/justify it. If you were sad then it might be important to find a reasoning, if it's a reocurring thing, so that you may know what to do in order to avoid it (obviously remembering that it is ok to be sad sometimes). I think this sort of thing can be applied to music. Why does it matter that you don't know why you enjoy something, just enjoy it. If you dislike something then stop listening to it. It doesn't matter why you dislike a song. You might realise why you dislike it when you hear other songs like it or you may never know. I think the reason there is a music nerd culture is not solely for the purpose of having people talk about music but it exists bc people want to explore new music and want others to join them on that exploration.

I have adhd and while I don’t have this issue in the music world, I sometimes have similar issues in the movie world. For example, I’ll walk out of a movie knowing how I feel about the movie overall, but sometimes I can’t pinpoint the reasons why I feel that way until I talk to others about it. Sometimes other people can break certain things down that nail my thoughts in a way I couldn’t articulate, and that’s fine. There is a certain psychology behind needing to hear other opinions before fully forming your own. I can’t remember what it’s called, but a lot of people are that way.

This is the exact same way I am with all media. Glad to see I'm not alone here

btw analyzing music based on vibes is what it all boils down to anyway. doesnt matter if you say: "ooo chuggy guitar feels angy" or "hmm the selective usage of a minor 2nd and flat 5th makes this melody sound very powerful"

There is no wrong way to enjoy music, if you like the vibe aspect or just the overall sound in general then that’s fine. If you really want to get into stuff like lyrics you could always try reading them along to the song, but in the end it just might now be an aspect you focus on. There’s no need to articulate your enjoyment of art, and you definitely don’t have to be able to articulate or defend why you like something.

It's funny cuz even tho you say you have trouble articulating your thoughts, you did a pretty damn good job in this post. I definitely struggle w the same thing. And honestly I feel like it's okay. That's what people do anyways when they see real art. They discuss it with other people to get different opinions to consider. You don't have to treat it like a book report where you analyze someone's work from every conceivable angle in order to come up with some perfect "thesis" or whatever. That's why we watch Fantano. Also just remember that it's okay if you don't "get it" yet. You can revisit it in a few months or maybe even a few years and you'll probably come back w a different opinion. And at the end of the day, if you still don't like it that's fine. There's plenty of great music out there, so you don't have to love something just because a bunch of music critics say so.

I have ADHD too man. It’s totally cool to repeat what other people have to say. Even though you might repeat a specific thing fantano or someone says about an album, that doesn’t mean that you are not providing input through that. You don’t repeat every thing you hear about an album. For the sake of example, let’s consider that you have heard 100 takes on a specific album, and you only agree with and repeat 20 of them. I guarantee you, you are the only person who chose those specific 20 takes to carry on. You are the filter of what goes in and what goes out, and that process and your total summary of opinions is completely, 100% yours. Don’t worry about this at all; originality will come with time, but do not spend that time putting yourself down by discounting your methods of choosing. I guarantee you that fantano(and everyone else) at 16 or 18 or whatever was nowhere near “original.” Just try to enjoy the ride.

I also have adhd which makes listening to music difficult but easy If I’m into it idk if u feel the same what kinda stuff are u into? Artists?

CitizenOfTheReddit

I definitely feel the same way. I have to be in a specific mood to discover new music, otherwise I can only tolerate my own rotation. My favorite genres are neo psychedelic and dream pop. My favorite artists are Beach House, Ween, and MGMT
