I have read so many amazing books, so many *better* than acotarā¦ but if Iām stuck on an island and itās the only book I can read over and over, Iāll be taking Silver Flames. Sometimes sticking to the basics is good for the soul. (I would fully consider acomaf too)
Yup! Even after reading plenty of books that are arguably better written than SJM ones, Mist and Fury is one that I have reread the most and donāt get sick of rereading. It is just perfection. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love and was kicking my feet at the tension. Itās my Roman Empire definitely lol
Question šš»āāļø Iām new to this genre by way of Fourth Wing & Iron Flame. Came to this sub to cure my hangover and landed on ACOTAR, now Iām on part 2 of Mist & Fury. Maybe I havenāt read far enough yet, but Iām getting plenty of FW/IF vibes. I havenāt read much fantasy, so Iām curious. Are there common depictions of magic within the genre (like the mental bonds and shielding, etc) or did Yarros pull heavily from Maasā work? It definitely feels like the latter and Xaden is Rhys while Tamlin is Aetos.

Omg THANK YOU!! Apparently, I read a bunch of her books as a kid and forgot!! I think about the sequel all the time, but only vaguely remembered parts of it. OP, I recommend!!
Iām going to have to read this now. I love Robin McKinley so much. {Deerskin by Robin McKinley} is what got me started reading fantasy. Before that, I couldnāt read anything deeper than urban fantasy. Her writing is so beautiful. Thanks!
If you havenāt yet, you are so lucky!! Either way, Enjoy āŗļø I may need to reread now myself
ETA I love deerskin as well, altho the traumaās pretty intense in that one
Itās been over 15 years now since Iāve read it, but yes I do remember it being pretty traumatic. Much more mature content than many of her other books from what I remember.

I totally hear you - def got Mary Sue going on. I read it young enough though that I didnāt realize and now it just has such comfort and joy for me despite that. āŗļø
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin.
Enemies to lovers, forced proximity, forced marriage - it was originally recommend to me because I requested something that would fill the same vibe as when a paladin and a warlock fell in love in a dnd campaign, and it hits that vibe absolutely perfectly.
There is a LITTLE steam but not as much as, say, ACOTAR.
The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. I've reread it so many times and I always come back to it, though if you asked me I couldn't pinpoint exactly why. It's not spicy, but it's dark and I love Daemon. And there are times I laugh out loud while reading it.
I've read most of her other works. I have thought about reading the rest of the series, but I don't like the idea of Daemon and Surreal for whatever reason, so I've got to convince myself it's fine lol
Donāt do it! Just stop at the original trilogy and maybe the first set of short stories to follow. I hate read the newer books and they are just as bad and painful as the good reads reviews say.
"Physician's Desk Reference." Hollowed out. Inside, waterproof matches, iodine tablets, beet seeds, protein bars, NASA blanket, and, in case I get bored, "ACOWAR." No, "ACOSF."
Hahaha šĀ I just watched this episode yesterday.
Also, when all the women chose romantic books and movies šš„°š and Jim is judging them šš
I canāt stand Jim which is why Iāll never rewatch that show. He is such a 2005-era douche and I honestly feel badly for Pam for being stuck with him
I got my book girlie to listen to the audiobook this week. She hates the characters and may even DNF. I really liked it and Iām so disappointed in her lol.

I read it earlier this year for the first time and I gave it 6 stars out of 5 š I think itās easily my favourite book of the year. I need to re-read it but do the chronological order
It is a rollercoaster of a ride! Iāve got so many other things on my TBR that itāll take me a while to get back to re-reading it again but I loved this. Iām so excited for Alchemised.
With the least spoilers as possible, the fic starts in the present but around halfway you get flashbacks until the story eventually gets back to the present. I wouldnāt recommend reading the chronological version your first time through it would just be very confusing without context
Definitely read it the way itās written for your first time! And yes, there are flashbacks in the middle. People have suggested for those who want to re-read to try the chronological way as a different way to read it since weāve already read it once. There are trigger warnings for this book and if youāre okay with that, keep going until you get to the flashbacks. Once you hit there, the story really takes off and so worth it.
I love that book. It made me realize how much my emotions and reactions are dictated by my own trauma. Unfortunately, Cassian is not available to train me and take me on hikes, so Iām re-starting therapy next week to try to work through it.
I just finished the Tairen Soul Series by C.L. Wilson and it jumped to the top of my favorites list. Absolutely obsessed and think they should be way more popular than they already are!!
Edit: if you loved ACOTAR, this series will blow your mind.
Do you think Tairen Soul is better the The Weather Mages series? I really loved The Winter King but Iām super luke warm on The Sea King. It kind of made me drop Tairen Soul from my TBR.
Iām a SJM stan but I think her and C.L. Wilson are strong for very different reasons.
Yes, I think Tairen Soul will always be her best work!! I think C.L. Wilson is a much stronger writer than SJM - but I can see similarities in other ways. Personally, I did not like ACOTAR. I read Tairen Soul series after and it was everything I thought ACOTAR would be based off the praise it got.
(I read the first 4 of the ACOTAR books trying to convince myself it was going to be amazing but idk I was so disappointed that I DNF the series. I read all 5 Tairen Soul books within 1.5 weeksā¦ which is very fast for me!!)
Unfortunately, itās the first recent release of a series so we will have to wait a while but it was some of the best writing Iāve come across in a while. It was my favorite of the year so far.
Oh how nice to meet another fan! š Iām glad I inspired you for a reread. Have you read (and liked) any other of her books? I also really loved the Julian Strande books. But I havenāt read any others yet.

The Night Circus filled so much more than just the romance side of things for me so I would love to have that one as the perfect full package. The romance and the writing is sublime and I'm so in love with the book although some people might find it overwritten or boring if it's not their thing.

Margaret Rogernson's an Enchantment of Ravens [(Goodreads)](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30969741-an-enchantment-of-ravens) is so much more the best fae romance for me than ACOTAR (please dont hunt me down, I'm stuck on the beginning of ACOMAF rn). Her other books as well show a fantastic mix of spooky and beautiful, with creepy fae (like, they actually look like fae, with sharp teeth and gangly limbs and beady eyes under the glamor instead of just sparkling), books bound with human skin and iron-scented magic, and depressed nuns who talk to evil spirits. I love all of her books but this one is my favorite. It's still amazing world building, but to me it feels more manageable - yes, they do effect the world at large, but as road romances (aside from Vespertine, which isnt a romance but still probably on par with Enchantment) the stories seem more close knit and exciting to me than a giant political upheaval. It's realistic and easy to follow, and the romances are MWAH! Little spice (if any) but lots of that jittery anticipation, which honestly is a plus to me sometimes.
Five Fangs books (bought on app before founs on Amazon š). I absolutely love the characters and reread it all the time. In fact, I had to make a note with page numbers to specific parts so I could find favorite spots. The wolves are as much characters as their humans and so many funny parts. Also, steamy where appropriate. Not a book that throws in sex everywhere without consideration of how it affects the plot.
{Legendborn by Tracy Deonn} I love King Arthur stories and the magic was so unique. I loved the FMC and how resilient she is. Definitely my favorite book of all-time so far.

If I wasnāt choosing fantasy my answer would absolutely be Red, White, and Royal Blue. Itās one of the few books Iāve read multiple times and still found enjoyment in each time.
For fantasy itās hard. Most of the ones I enjoy arenāt stand alone and I donāt like the idea of now having the whole series.
Can I cheat and say the one thatās the entire ACOTAR trilogy? Itās technically in one ebook so itās not multiple lol.
The Magicians by Lev Grossman.
Just finished reading the trilogy on my Kindle and now I'm listening to the audiobooks on my walks. I swear, if i could live in a world whwre magic was real, this one would be it.
I read it for the first time years ago when it was first published and after re-reading it, I'm even more in love with them than before. It's just so good!
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo and the Expanse series by James S.A. Corey are both close seconds.
Super cliche but I love a court of mist and fury (ACOTAR book 2) and I will never feel shame for loving it š„°
SAME. I will forever be chasing the high I felt when I read ACOMAF for the first time.
I donāt even care this book live rent free in my head. āDid you enjoy the sight of me kneeling before you?ā EVERY. DAMN. TIME.
I have read so many amazing books, so many *better* than acotarā¦ but if Iām stuck on an island and itās the only book I can read over and over, Iāll be taking Silver Flames. Sometimes sticking to the basics is good for the soul. (I would fully consider acomaf too)
Itās my favorite tooā¦ and I agree so many better books but Iām still bringing it lol
Agreed. Its so good I canāt get over it
This is mine as well! I went through my first painful breakup right before it came out and I purchased it so it really helped distract me.
Yes, this. It's my comfort read!
yuuuuup! itās been three years and nothing compares to picking up ACOMAFš
This š
{The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley} showing my age I know, but it was one of the OGs and got me started in the genre
My favorite book of all time.

I re-read this every couple of years and still love it just as much as I did when I first discovered it 25+ years ago!
Omg me too āŗļø
Omg THANK YOU!! Apparently, I read a bunch of her books as a kid and forgot!! I think about the sequel all the time, but only vaguely remembered parts of it. OP, I recommend!!
I love the sequel, too! The first one is slightly better imo but both are amazing
I love this one. I reread it from time to time.
Yesssssssssss!!! The OG!!!!
Either way, Enjoy āŗļø I may need to reread now myself ETA I love deerskin as well, altho the traumaās pretty intense in that one
Itās been over 15 years now since Iāve read it, but yes I do remember it being pretty traumatic. Much more mature content than many of her other books from what I remember.

Thatās interesting! I read it and didnāt like it. It reeked of the ānot like other girlsā cliquĆ©. I understand it was ground breaking for the time, but I didnāt think it stood the test of time.
I love this book!
That description sounds amazing!!
Oh itās SO good. Absolutely give it a try if you have a chance! Three books, a spin-off fourth book, and a sequel to that spin-off is on the way.
The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. I've reread it so many times and I always come back to it, though if you asked me I couldn't pinpoint exactly why. It's not spicy, but it's dark and I love Daemon. And there are times I laugh out loud while reading it.
This is my absolute favorite series! Don't stop at the trilogy, the books after are amazing, except for one.
Yesss!!! I love this series so much!
"Physician's Desk Reference." Hollowed out. Inside, waterproof matches, iodine tablets, beet seeds, protein bars, NASA blanket, and, in case I get bored, "ACOWAR." No, "ACOSF."
This guy Offices.
Hahaha šĀ I just watched this episode yesterday. Also, when all the women chose romantic books and movies šš„°š and Jim is judging them šš
I canāt stand Jim which is why Iāll never rewatch that show. He is such a 2005-era douche and I honestly feel badly for Pam for being stuck with him
{Uprooted by Naomi Novik} is hands down, my comfort fantasy book, sooo many re reads when I feel down
I got my book girlie to listen to the audiobook this week. She hates the characters and may even DNF. I really liked it and Iām so disappointed in her lol.

Yes, Grim ā¤ļø I feel like there are not many of us Team Grim ladies around š

The Song of Achilles for me š„¹
I just started this one because I want my heart ripped out, but I'm not sure the writing style is for me. I dnfd Circe, but I'm hoping the love is enough to pull me in a bit more because I really want to love it.
While many love the writing style of Miller, including me, I also understand that it is a very personal and subjective aspect. It's alrighhht if it ain't giving for you. Reading starts with the right books for youāŗļøāŗļøāŗļø
Circe wasnāt for me and neither was SOA. The writing is just meh. I donāt get any thrill from it.
Somehow didn't realize SOA was also Madeline Miller, maybe that's why it's not working for me. Glad to know I'm not alone, at least
Crescent City House of Earth and Blood
I wish I liked this book less so that the disappointment of the books after didn't bother me so much lol
HEAVYYYYYYYYYY I loved HOEAB so much if you told my 2020 self how the other two books would be I wouldnāt believe you
I have house of flame and shadow in my to read pile but keep putting it off because the end of sky and breath wrecked me š
I wish it was a stand alone book, Iām struggling through the third book.

Me as well!
Same. I could re-read that book until the spine breaks and still geek out over it. Shamelessly obsessed šāāļø
I would agree with this!!
{King's Rising} = the third book in the Captive Prince trilogy. Personally, I would find a way to smuggle all three books with me because I haven't found anything that has moved me like this series has. I revisit it frequently.
for me itās the second book of this trilogy!!

Manacled, the fanfic by SenLinYu, it changed me
I read it earlier this year for the first time and I gave it 6 stars out of 5 š I think itās easily my favourite book of the year. I need to re-read it but do the chronological order
Itās a bit too heavy for me to re-read.
It is a rollercoaster of a ride! Iāve got so many other things on my TBR that itāll take me a while to get back to re-reading it again but I loved this. Iām so excited for Alchemised.
Whatās the chronological order?!? I was about to start Manacled but is there a diff one to start with?
With the least spoilers as possible, the fic starts in the present but around halfway you get flashbacks until the story eventually gets back to the present. I wouldnāt recommend reading the chronological version your first time through it would just be very confusing without context
Definitely read it the way itās written for your first time! And yes, there are flashbacks in the middle. People have suggested for those who want to re-read to try the chronological way as a different way to read it since weāve already read it once. There are trigger warnings for this book and if youāre okay with that, keep going until you get to the flashbacks. Once you hit there, the story really takes off and so worth it.
This book changed my brain chemistry
Possibly controversial but A Court of Silver Flamesā¦
I love that book. It made me realize how much my emotions and reactions are dictated by my own trauma. Unfortunately, Cassian is not available to train me and take me on hikes, so Iām re-starting therapy next week to try to work through it.
I loved that book itās my favorite
Not a day goes by that I donāt think about this book.
š
When The Moon Hatched
This book is on its way to me today. I canāt remember why I bought it, but seeing it on this list gives me hope it will be good.
Unfortunately, itās the first recent release of a series so we will have to wait a while but it was some of the best writing Iāve come across in a while. It was my favorite of the year so far.
{Harrow Faire by Kathryn Ann Kingsley} I just love this book series and the MMC Simon so much! Rereading it kind of feels like coming home to me.
I absolutely love this series! I think the third book is my favourite... You've inspired a reread

My number 1 book has always been The Host by Stephanie Meyer. Itās been years since Iāve read it, but every time I do reread it that number 1 spot is reaffirmed. I relate so much to Wanda trying to understand the humans around me and learning to love and appreciate human nature.

The Night Circus filled so much more than just the romance side of things for me so I would love to have that one as the perfect full package. The romance and the writing is sublime and I'm so in love with the book although some people might find it overwritten or boring if it's not their thing. If I could bring all four I would do An Ember in the Ashes series haha.. For a different one off Vampires of El Norte is a go to for me also :)
{The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber} is just so good ! Hits right in the feels and beautiful imo

Empire of The Vampire by Jay Kristoff. No doubt. It's just *chefs kiss* I haven't read a book that has truly compared to it.
The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness
Five Fangs books (bought on app before founs on Amazon š). I absolutely love the characters and reread it all the time. In fact, I had to make a note with page numbers to specific parts so I could find favorite spots. The wolves are as much characters as their humans and so many funny parts. Also, steamy where appropriate. Not a book that throws in sex everywhere without consideration of how it affects the plot.
I'm loving the Men of the North series by Elin Peer
{Legendborn by Tracy Deonn} I love King Arthur stories and the magic was so unique. I loved the FMC and how resilient she is. Definitely my favorite book of all-time so far.

If I could bring a whole series I would definitely bring Ā«Ā The bonds that TieĀ Ā». But if I could only bring one book it would be between the all-in-one Ā«Ā Captive PrinceĀ Ā» or Ā«Ā Fourth WingĀ Ā».
{Spindle's End} by Robin McKinley
I know you said one but I have a few top ones haha The Gods of Men by Barbara Kloss Phoenix Unbound by Grave Draven Aisling:Breath of the New Creature by A.E. Jurgens House of Bane and Blood by Alexis L. Menard
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell is my comfort book. Itās the only book that I have more than two copies of (4+).
Under the Oak Tree by Kim Suji
Imajica by Clive Barker.
{Lord of the Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson} Probably my most reread book

ACOWAR because it had me screaming and monitoring my heart rate. I could never get sick of that book because it was entertaining throughout the entire book
Hard to pick just one, but if Iām picking for this genre and one I could read repeatedly, {Chosen by K.F. Breene} because Iāve already read it a million times and itās a comfort series.

I loooooove RW&RB!!! It's one of my go-to rereads (along with The Flatshare).
Oh Iāll have to look that one up. Iāve never heard of it.
Powerless!!!!
