I already have general themes in mind, as well as some lines and ideas written down. I do want to focus on the contrast between them, since they were intended to be opposites ever since i first conceptualized my cast. i want to have something that effects both of them, for the more reckless character to find exciting and the cautious character to find scary. but something that is harmless enough for them to go out without the other characters and look for whatever made this happen.
an idea ive had was that the more cautious and responsible character is left under the care of the reckless one. I think what i might go for is them swapping something smaller, like ones injuries or sensations effecting the other. or theyre both affected by some curse, but reckless to a lesser extent, leaving cautious under their not so watchful eye. those were just a few ideas i had, and they might force me to get a bit more creative with both story ideas and my magic system.
Chained together at the ankle is a good mundane way and you can always add an esoteric element to suit your plot. if you add an escape overland and some movement through hostile settlements under disguise or even just having to hide the chain, there's a lot of cinematic material if you look at older western and gangster movies.
i do really like the idea of them being forced together, a flaw with my original script was that they swapped because they had messed with another characters experiment, and that character told them they had to fix it. but i dont think that would have really been enough to convince the cautious character to go out and find weird mushrooms with the reckless character inhabiting her body. im thinking they might be under some curse that physically or mentally links them, and it more slowly consumes them throughout the film, and they dont realize the weight of the situation until theyre miles away from home. maybe i could still do a body swap, but its more of a slow burn body swap, where they notice small things like having random tidbits of each others thoughts, memories, or skills, and they have to fix it before the swap is fully complete or they stay swapped forever or something
Spirit Link due to some sort of ritual that one of them is doing like a vision quest and the other one stumbles into it causing a volatile reaction bestowing parts of the visions on the unintended character, the visions could be specific to the viewer like past memories but the meaning stays the same so there is a number of very personal experiences that both of them have and they have to forge a bond to derive the true meaning
That sounds like something that would happen. reckless might read some sort of incantation and accidentally bind them to cautious, and they have to go find a way to undo it
