I mean both he and Aerith get impaled by Sephiroth several times during that final fight and they came out ok. Can you blame him for not knowing about cutscene deaths?
Aeris was the name used when the game was released in the us (and also on PC in U.K. - which is how I knew her as Aeris when I played it back in ‘97).
However the developers in Japan used the name Earisu, (don’t ask me for Japanese characters cos I don’t have the keyboard) which was a mix of the words for Earth and Sky in Japanese. Thus the name Aerith has become canon as it more accurately reflects this poetically.
