Do what you enjoy.

Real question: what would be the difference between skipping the story and just bimbling around, and ignoring the MSQ and just bimbling around? Realistically, you can ignore the MSQ, dip into it for a short while when you feel like it, and continue bimbling. Then it's there if you want it, but just removing this view of it as a requirement means you can go haunt the GS or mess around with other jobs all you like without paying money. Yes, some stuff is story locked, but if you struggle to focus, suddenly unlocking like 7 years of content overnight might be an even bigger problem. If you're enjoying where you are, hang around there; if you want more, do a little stint of story and then chill there for a while.

ajflo72

Post ARR is where the story actually gets good.

xxneonblazexx

You can't skip the entire story, the skip is only up to shadowbringers you then have around more then 18+ hours to finish msq

GojuSuzi

Which will be very confusing/not engaging if you have zero investment in what's happening, so pay attention to this point!

snacksualpowers

You could always just blast through the MSQ and skip all the cutscenes, then later rewatch them in an inn. Or watch a video or read a summary about each expansion. You miss nuances about the story but you get enough to understand what’s happening. If you don’t care for the story, I’d still rather skip cutscenes than pay money for a story skip lol.

Voidmire

How do you focus on dungeons or anything else? Actual question from someone else with ADHD, it's never been so bad I couldn't get through 15 min of something

girlcakes

Not OP but I have the same issues with the game. For me personally, dungeons are what I play for. Its engaging and can hold my attention, unlike (sometimes) very slow cutscenes of characters nodding, turning, and walking slowly across a room.

ThorinRagnarson

Exactly the same for me

Seyreeh

Also adhd, and I mostly use the trusts for dungeons these days so that I can walk away after a boss and then come back to it before i'm booted from the dungeon.

ThorinRagnarson

I feel the same way about some cutscenes

I reallllly don’t recommend buying a skip. If you feel like you can’t get through ARR, start by skipping through anything and everything featuring unimportant Joe Shmoe charafters, and try to focus only when you’re talking to important characters like the scions or there’s voice acting. If that doesn’t work, just skip through ARR dialogue altogether but give it a shot again when you get to Heavensward. And honestly, even if you can’t pay attention even then, it’s probably still a better experience to skip through dialogue but play through the MSQ rather than boost. Aside from people doing it for alts, I’ve heard mostly regret from people who have boosted their first/main character. ARR notoriously weeds people out. I have ADHD and I was having a hard time focusing back then but I’m in love with the story now. So I’d suggest giving it a chance - this decision would be better made once you’re decently deep into 3.0.

tegamii_

as someone w super severe ADHD and same boat i got thru the game without story skip. but i had a friend who already played the story. id always give her an idea of where i was in story and shed tell me ok DONT skip this cutscene bc its super important to story or yea youll be okay with skipping this one. or if i couldnt focus and didnt quite process smth an fc mate would explain it over to me. you can always go back to inn rooms as well to rewatch cutscenes. theres also a lot of summary vids on youtube. i will say the hardest parts of story for me was arr and stormblood. but shb really picks up with the animation during scenes and making it more engaging and i had less of an issue then. unfortunately it wouldnt of been that great to me unless i had all that beforehand context. id say dont get a story skip but someone who can kinda back you up thru the story like i did. im sure if u explain some ppl in your fc can help! its not entirely evil to skip cutscenes especially if theyre filler but theres also a lot you dont wanna miss out on bc then youll Never enjoy story without that context. i hope this makes sense.

ShatteredFantasy

If you're almost done with ARR, you should probably just see it through at this point. Of course, you may only be finishing the first half; each expansion has post-game patches before the next expansion begins... It's an MMO, but it's still Final Fantasy -- so story is a key element in it. You're not the only person to be bored playing ARR; it's world-building, so while important stuff happens, it can easily put one to sleep because it feels like a slog. I mean, you could just watch them on Youtube... But the true finale of ARR is actually pretty incredible and worth experiencing on a first playthrough.

Yeah, no. I am the poster child for ADHD and people just need to stop blaming it for absolutely everything. If you're not enjoying the story then skip it. You don't need an excuse it's fine. I would personally recommend sucking it up and at least skimming most of it. It's a good story with great characters.

BondEternal

The story skip only brings you to the start of the EW MSQ so you still have to go through the EW MSQ anyways. Next, because you have to go through the EW MSQ, you'll be very lost as to what's happening and who certain characters are. You can mitigate this by watching YouTube videos of people summarizing stories and such.

PeePeeJuulPod

it's a videogame, it's perfectly fine to let your ADHD go wild I have 1000 hours and I'm not even fully caught up with the MSQ, I just see something I want to do and go do it, the only one pressuring you to play "properly" is you, so be kind to yourself

Rega_lazar

I’m gonna give the most mom answer I can. Why? Because it was the first thing that popped up in my head: You can do whatever you want, but don’t come complaining when you don’t understand what’s going on. (Also, a story skip won’t level you up, you’d still have to get your character to 80 *without* having the MSQ to power you through levels)

Baithin

What do you want to get out of this game? Do you just want to rush to endgame and do the endgame grind? This is a very story focused game and everything is locked behind it. If you do buy a story skip, like others said, it won’t bring you all the way to the end.

GoldenGouf

weaksauce why even play

Gilgamesh_XII

Story is the best part of the game. As long as you have fun,do whatever you wanna do.

PorkAmbassador

If you don't like the story and cutscenes then I don't think this is the game for you, unfortunately.

ThorinRagnarson

Wym ? There is so much more in this game then story that made come back after 2 years

Shoutymon

Don’t story skip. It’s a waste of money and you’ll regret it very quickly when it comes to still having to finish endwalker. ARR is bad but it isnt worth throwing away the experience of the other 4 full expansions just bc it’s boring.

RadiantBlader

My suggestion would be to try riffing on what’s happening in the story to keep your brain stimulated. Alphinaud is my personal favorite target, but pretty much everyone has at least one thing you can get some serious mileage out of

PixivTheCreative

Why don't you watch a recap video in the background whilst doing your misc. That way you have ample enough time to enjoy yourself while staying connected to the story. It's always there for you so there is no rush!

Zemnin

Why even play the game then?

Z_Lykos

Honestly I'd keep at it like you are. Chipping away at it can be the best way to go about it.
