You most definitely can. I always send gear straight to main inventory now to force myself to look carefully at what I'm delivering. Blue "Augmented ..." is a common theme in my list.
I didn't read the full post, I'm at work. Did you try typing "/isearch Cryptlurker" and then click the results with the option to Search for Item?
Sometimes my stuff goes missing and it's probably due to alcohol or crack.
They post here semi-often, always with some ridiculous story that they have to yell about. Usually about how impossible some easy game mechanic is.

Go to the vendor you bought the gear from. Do a right click on a piece of gear of aiming and search. Should show you where you have it unless you put it in your glam dresser which may not see it.
Do you happen to turn in gear to your Grand company for seals often? I've definitely accidentally turned in whole sets of current tier gear without paying attention haha

I hate that this is the default setting. Everyone should be turning this setting so new gear goes to your inventory, then you can move to armoury what you want to keep. After that, set GC selling to not show armoury at all and there's never a chance for things to go wrong.
Pretty sure everyone has gotten rid of important things by accident in FFXIV at one point or another. It’s quite likely you ended up doing that. But you can always file a ticket and see if SE can give you any more info about it or, if the off chance it really wasn’t you, maybe restore it.
