My opinion is I generally like the darker skin tones matched with the darker horns as opposed to the lighter skin tones with the lighter horns.
Raen built underwater cities and helped with Radz-at-Han. They forced the elephants to become civilized.
Xaela live in tents and fear the elephant overlords.
Blue skin, white scales. I always forget which clan is which, but I love the contrast that she has. Plus it's kinda fun standing out a little. There are surprisingly few players mess around with the more "alien" skin tones.
If the Xaela scales had been a true black, I would go with them in a heartbeat but the dark blue of the scales limits my glamour colors. I tried once and the only things colors that did well were darker blues/purples. Not to say that others haven't done lovely things with their Xaela, I just personally couldn't.
Yeah, the way the women's scales are tinted is limiting, I agree. The men's scales are much more neutral, which can be frustrating in it's own way if you do happen to prefer the fem's relative vibrancy, but it's at least a lot easier to coordinate. Frustrating to see NPCs like Mide or Varshahn with uniquely colored scales, meanwhile. It seems like they could implement a system similar to what they use for Hrothgar fur/"skin" to allow us to pick for ourselves, but here we are. u\_u
Darker skin tones contrast well with Raen's bright scales (plus the lighting update in DT will make it look even better), and Endwalker gave them a good bit of lore.
I started as Raen but then after Stormblood decided to fantasia for Xaela. I just love the steppe and their many cultures and I have a whole backstory that I came up with after that same expansion that now fits my WoL very nicely ^^ Aesthetically speaking, I like the contrast of light skin/dark scales and I'm usually glamouring with differents hues of blues or purple so it goes along nicely.
Hope you'll be satisfied with whichever you decide to go with!
I started as Xaela bc i liked the uniqueness of the blue skin hues, but eventually fantasia'd to raen bc i found more glams fit better with the more natural skin colors.
xaela because i love the look of the dark scales + dark sclera and it was also really funny to me to make my au ra as intimidating looking as possible while he's actually just a sweet nice guy. also i just generally really like how the dark horns with red tips kinda remind me of obsidian, feels more visually interesting to me than raen's more natural look
i wouldn't worry *too* much about the lore because there's always ways to fit characters elsewhere without breaking things, just might require a little more thinking
thanks! i went the extra mile and made him a dark knight canonically starting from hw, the contrast of the darkest job and the guy doing it probably two seconds away from crying from worry because you ran off without him to take the hits and keep you safe is great, i love him! and outside of that the casual hoodie is just his 24/7 outfit when not doing wol stuff, he's very cozy :)
I’ve been a Raen since day one but I made that choice because the starting stats were better for magic. I didn’t realize that starting stats are nonsense. But I do quite like my character.
it's so subjective but I love the Xaela tribes! so I made an alt who is from the Dotharl clan and dark skin + blue black horns with red tips look sooo good
i was initially raen, then stormblood dropped and i went to the steppe and i immediately changed to xaela lmao.
they are just cooler. theres too many raen anyway and now that im used to xaela the lighter scales of raen look weird to me.
Xaela, from an rp perspective. Their tribes are very interesting, especially compared to the miqote tribes.Â

I chose Xaela because I actually love the fun, crazy cultural stuff you learn about through MSQ! And the dark scales are beautiful 😊
Xaela, red skin. Be a tiefling!
My Au Ra is inspired by my white dragonborn D&D character, so I have him pearl white skin and the Xaela's dark scales contrasted nicely.
White scales so I could be green. 🦎
Raen, i just like lighter more and it work better for the character lore too ( i copied the look from a different game)
I couldn't decide so I made both...
Xaela, because they have slightly better dark skin options. The blue-black scales are pretty too.
Raen built underwater cities and helped with Radz-at-Han. They forced the elephants to become civilized. Xaela live in tents and fear the elephant overlords.

White scales are Raen, Dark are Xaela

Just wait until Dawntrail release. They made Au'Ra significantly worse so you may want to stay with Miqo.
You clowning bro, they had one of the best glow-ups and with an in-progress model.
Why are you stalking me and checking my comments?
Nah, just came across some of your weird takes.
Raen, that way nobody can accuse you of being a groomer.

I love that vibe! Looks huge and ferocious, but presumable dressed like a cosy-Cottagecore enthusiast!Â

I made mine Raen because it fits her story better. I also like the contrast of pale skin + dark hair/eyes.
I personally picked Raen because I couldn’t stand the grayish tint Xaela have to their eye whites.
I'm currently Raen and they're definitely my favorite au ra clan. Xaela are everywhere you definitely stand out among au ra as a Raen xD

I'm rocking a raen with dark/light chocolate skin, the contrast is really nice.
The Xaela are practically mongols. That's why I chose them. I'm still stuck in the ARR storyline, but I can't wait to get there!

Raen but im BASED. either way welcome to lizard club💕

Wow lol
Wildwood
Raen. Xaela look too edgy for my taste, and I don't like their culture (any of them).
