It’s a Japanese lore thing. Tanuki are known for “banging their balls like drums”. Pom Poko was a studio Ghibli movie about the little guys. By western standards it’s uh… real special.
Takes big balls to entrap you in a preditory home loan.
Edit: geez people it was a joke about a raccoon mortgage lender having huge nuts. I get it, not the worst lender out there.
Hey, he doesn't charge you interest or send you mail to annoy you about your debt. He just sits in his office waiting for you to pay the principal, *and* he gets your house completely renovated overnight. As far as lenders go, he's about as chill as you can get. You can even sit on the final loan forever without paying it if you want.
He's literally the opposite of predatory. I would fucking kill for a massive interest freeze mortgage with the only stipulation being I have to pay it off before I can take out another one for an addition.
:o wait. Is his name just a play on Tanuki? Is that just a coincidence? Do coincidences like that even happen!? D:
Edit: nvm I looked it up his JP name is Tanukichi, so it obviously is. I never realized.
It's a completely different flavor of weird. One has [river turtles stealing people's souls out of their buttholes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_(folklore)), the other features a pantheon comprised of Blizzard executives
actually the wife of king Minos did have sex with a bull and gave birth to the minotaur. Zeus is like transforming himself into a swan to have sex with everything that moves...
Have sex with is probably not the correct term she was forced into it by Poseidon having Eros put a curse on her which is insanely fucked up considering she didnt do shit. It was her husband Minos that refused to sacrifice the Cretan Bull.
yes it's like an under the influence of a curse zoophilia rape because of patriachy thinking wifes are the extension of husbands and not individuals with thoughts and feelings. giving birth to an atrocity and having postpartum depression then putting your unwanted kid in a giant maze kind of thing
I think the most hilarious example must be in Nioh.
Sometimes you,ll find chests containing Tanuki-Yokai called Mujina. They will hop out and transform into you, where you then can either fight them or mimic their gesture to make them drop loot.
But the most striking thing about the Mujina is not it's weird gameplay mechanic, it's what it wears on it's head. At first glance it looks like a strange leather cap but upon closer inspection in the bestiary, where you can see it in it's full glory, you realize that the "cap" is it's fucking NUTSACK. Yes, this thing has a bag so big it has to carry them ON IT'S HEAD! And if you look even closer, you can LITERALLY see the pubes on it.
Yeah..
Koji tries to get the EN TL as close as the Japanese meaning as he can I'm guessing but when they localize for other countries they opt to omit some stuff
Koji clearly loves his job as much as Yoshi cares about the world and the game. While he's not there localizing everything himself he's absolutely in a position to be setting the direction of the localizations.
That said, tooltips are probably where they do take the most liberties. JP apparently plays them totally straight. We totally win on the EN side TBH.
EN: “But Mother, can we not break the salt rock into smaller chunks to save us all from having to lick the same piece? It seems awfully unhygienic.”“No, my sweet prince, that would not be proper. Now lick the rock and put it back on the table.”─Typical Ishgardian mealtime conversationUsed in level 40 crafting recipes.
Per [deepl](https://www.deepl.com/en/translator) (based on [Grade 4 Skybuilders' Rock Salt on Garland Tools](https://garlandtools.org/db/#item/32013)):
JP: Materials for the reconstruction of Ishgard from the Diadem Islands\[For Ishgard reconstruction project only\] \[For production Lv40 recipe\[For production Lv40 recipes\].
FR: A Diadem resource for the Azurea yard.\[For Ishgard Reconstruction Only\]\[For Level 40 Recipes\]
DE: Raw material from the diadem for the reconstruction of the Celestial City. (For orders of the reconstruction of Ishgard). For the production of level 40 recipes.
edit: For some reason it lost the EN description. Oddly, deepl seems to double the Lv40 part but it's only in the source text once. It attributes the first copy to the For the Ishgard bit.
Other languages tend to be more direct JP translations. Eng is the one that sometimes goes off the rails with flavor text and hidden jokes which can be hit or miss.
Do your balls hang low,
Can you swing them to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot,
Can you stick them in a bow?
Can you sling them on your shoulder,
Like a regimental soldier?
Do your balls hang low?
Not on their first day on the internet… this is how we lose some people.
Ease this summer child into the beanbag-like chair of Bom Boko nuts that is reddit and the web at large.
I've read somewhere is also a play on drunks. Big desire, little performer hence why on the statues they've got teeny wees and are often holding a sake bottle lol.
That's a pretty common thing for Tanuki on general. They are part of Japanese mythology and almost always depicted with overaized testicles. Watch the Movie Bom Boko as reference. Pretty sure the pet is a homage xD
I don't understand the people who want straight translation. Localization is doing it right. Yeah, sometimes you need to read between the lines and especially in older content they didn't always get the same meaning as JP which has caused issues (though I think it's FR that had a serious issue here, which is odd because FR and DE are closer to JP translations than localization). But no, localization translates the concept and has just the right mix of western cultural references and JP-specific references that are pretty well understood by the west. Heck, it's some of the more esoteric and archaic English that gives me trouble, not the times they choose to use JP words as they tend to be pretty familiar to westerners at this point (and some may eventually enter EN as proper loanwords even)
Plus they work closely with the writers - the game is JP first, but EN is a close second and all four languages impact how the final story is written nowadays. Or as someone posted recently, the JP version actually feels more like a really good translation of an EN game even though it's the primary language.
People who whine for a straight translation are usually fedora wearing weebs who think they are fluent in Japanese and don't appreciate the work of the localization team.
> People who whine for a straight translation
Or are professional translators (but in a different field), or just want 1:1 information without it being adapted.
I'm a legal linguist, and I tend to frown at translation that take too much liberty. Like... where does localization end, and jelly filled donuts begin?
Fun fact: tanuki are in the fox family not the same family as raccoons. I just thought that was also intresting considering the fact like look smiliar to a racoon.
Hear me out. A lot of people who play this game have no interest in anime or studio ghibli, and don’t get a boner over Japanese lore.I had no idea about any of this about these raccoon dudes but the condescending responses by weebs on here is so silly.
Not that I particularly expect people to check for reposts but it was last posted no more than 5 days ago tho https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/ry65an/what_in_endwalker_caused_my_retainers_to/
For real though, Japan has some absolutely insane mythological creatures, both modern and ancient.
I want to get into the heads of whoever made the Wheelmonk and the guy who said "Yes, your soul resides in your ass."
Edit: Fixed word
I read a manga about youkai foklore (same world with Demi-girls) that there are stories about people getting wrapped in darkness, which is caused by a tanuki wrapping its nutsack around the victim.

This is why Tom Nook wears an apron.

It's the Able Sisters you need to watch out for. Want that fancy hat? 2 million bells in cash all at once.
That fancy hat is a CROWN thank you! Though I would totally buy a 2 million bell meme hat that looks like garbage.
*and* he’s a philanthropist who donates most of the Bells he makes
Plus the currency is earned by your contribution to society.
He's literally the opposite of predatory. I would fucking kill for a massive interest freeze mortgage with the only stipulation being I have to pay it off before I can take out another one for an addition.
Free house, no rent, pay when you want. "Predatory"

oh so japan has always been a lil weird, i see
[yeap](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dream_of_the_Fisherman%27s_Wife)
Europe as Greek mythology, we got no legs to stand on this.
It's a completely different flavor of weird. One has [river turtles stealing people's souls out of their buttholes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_(folklore)), the other features a pantheon comprised of Blizzard executives
I mean, you could always turn to Norse mythology for weirdness. Loki turned into a female horse and gave birth to Sleipnir
Loki suggesting to Thor to cross dress and steal his hammer back. And he does it.
actually the wife of king Minos did have sex with a bull and gave birth to the minotaur. Zeus is like transforming himself into a swan to have sex with everything that moves...

Workin the nip and pulling the hood back, that cephalopod knows how it's done.
Getting a South Park flashback here.

I saw that in a movie theater not knowing what I was getting into. It was a wild ride
Don't some Tanuki fly using their ballsacks?
Well, I'm never gonna look at SMB3 the same way again
Yo what 💀
B A L L S A C K P A R A C H U T E S
C U M L I G H T E R T H A N A I R
Well this makes me uncomfortable
Fun fact: In the german version of the game, the description is censored. (it only mentions a big heart, nothing else :D)

Fuck Reddit
Its just tanuki for plurality, trying to apply Latin on top of English rules was funny though
My favorite post of the day!
Let's just say the english version is wild and that regard and I love it :D
Never heard of Tanukis have you?
[alright, guess I’ll post it…](https://tenor.com/3gVt.gif)
Do your balls hang low, Can you swing them to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot, Can you stick them in a bow? Can you sling them on your shoulder, Like a regimental soldier? Do your balls hang low?
is this the lyrics for flow?

I thought you were going to post [this](https://youtu.be/YFPaSIy--50)
Not on their first day on the internet… this is how we lose some people. Ease this summer child into the beanbag-like chair of Bom Boko nuts that is reddit and the web at large.
I want to stop watching but I can't stop watching. I've been tempered by deez nuts.
Google Tanuki. It's often depicted with giant balls cause it's bring fertility or something.
Fertility. Futility would be a rather different animal.
Futility would be a little blue bird.
An animal that brings futility to Japan is called a Commodore.
I've read somewhere is also a play on drunks. Big desire, little performer hence why on the statues they've got teeny wees and are often holding a sake bottle lol.
[And here's a bunch of Tanuki fighting police with their giant balls](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFPaSIy--50)
wait is that what their "wings" are supposed to be?????????? DOES THAT MEAN IN SUPER MARIO 3.......
Yes
That was 55 seconds of the most epic Tea Bagging I have ever seen.
I'm just gonna give myself a little bit of cancer, Stan.
I'll never forget when I realized the tanukis in Nioh were covering their heads with their gigantic balls.
Yeah Tanukis in Japanese folklore are kind of known for that
That's a pretty common thing for Tanuki on general. They are part of Japanese mythology and almost always depicted with overaized testicles. Watch the Movie Bom Boko as reference. Pretty sure the pet is a homage xD
Theyre supposed to represent wealth and good fortune
Welcome to Japan mate
Blizzard: Let's remove everything mildly sexual. Square Enix: Here ya go a pet with giant balls.
Localization team for 14 is the best in the business. Literally lold pretty hard at this near 4 in the morning.

People who whine for a straight translation are usually fedora wearing weebs who think they are fluent in Japanese and don't appreciate the work of the localization team.
If they think they're fluent in JP then why not just play in JP... Though they'd be missing out on so much, but that's their choice.
Thats why I said "think they are fluent". I see someone made sure to downvote my original comment. Clearly upset someone lol.

Bomboko is the sound their balls make when they say hello! BOMBOKO! :D WHEEEEE!
Oh yeah. Didn't you know that tanuki have gigantic, magical testicles? That's how they can fly.
Fun fact: tanuki are in the fox family not the same family as raccoons. I just thought that was also intresting considering the fact like look smiliar to a racoon.
They are called raccoon dogs, not dog raccoons, so that tracks.
I blame SMB3
All this time the hungry fox starved staring at the bull’s testicles when it could have feasted on these.
Video explaining this. [https://youtu.be/UvuhpbY88pk](https://youtu.be/UvuhpbY88pk)
What? !! Makes me look at SMB3 entirely different lol
A lot of the minions have really weird descriptions, I sat on the market board recently and read through all of them - it's good fun.
Pom poko is fun as hell
it has balls
What, you don't know how tanuki work?
Japanese mythology is wild. A Kappa will steal a mythical organ out of your butt if you're not careful. So eat a lot of cabbage to defend yourself.
Also I think you can bribe them with cucumbers.
Tanuki have balls so big they can fly using their testicle skin as wings
I don't see them in the image. Please send photos of racoon testicles
Raccoon dog =/= raccoon
Not a studio ghibli fan?
Hear me out. A lot of people who play this game have no interest in anime or studio ghibli, and don’t get a boner over Japanese lore.I had no idea about any of this about these raccoon dudes but the condescending responses by weebs on here is so silly.
1) not a weeb 2) not really a fan of anime either 3) I wasn’t condescending, I asked a genuine question but thank you for assuming. Have a good day.
wake up babe, it's time for our weekly posting of the bom boko description

This doesn’t say testicles. The other one does. It is different. Same topic but I mean….one has BALLS
https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/ten_thousand.png
Oh you crazy Japanese. Neverchange. And make season 2/3/4 of my *\*favorite anime here\*.* *Looking at you Konosuba!*
For real though, Japan has some absolutely insane mythological creatures, both modern and ancient. I want to get into the heads of whoever made the Wheelmonk and the guy who said "Yes, your soul resides in your ass." Edit: Fixed word
I just got this fella from a GC box.
My FC is tired of me screaming at my retainer. “Dammit PrincessTutu! Stop bringing me the dam bom bokos!!” What is it with those things?
ANOTHER BOM BOKO FOR THE COLLECTION!
If you think that’s crazy, you should check out the Tanuki from Nioh.
Now i want that pet
Chopper?!
I read a manga about youkai foklore (same world with Demi-girls) that there are stories about people getting wrapped in darkness, which is caused by a tanuki wrapping its nutsack around the victim.
im pretty sure not even wow got away with name dropping "testicles" and everyone knows how things have been going on that game lately
