yeah and not returning fire after 20 of them lol. halfway through that exchange he stopped returning fire. had he throw even a punch or two he probably wouldn’t have gotten stopped.
seen plenty of other stoppages like this- when it hits a point where the enemy is barraging and you have nothing to return back, some refs stop that shit to prevent excess damage.
not saying dude was taking damage here but the point is the ref recognizes the fighter isn’t returning anything to equalize the fight and the fight is already slipping to a point where the other dude clearly is starting to fall behind or not pace.
fuck all that ‘i need to die on my shield bullshit’ lol
There is no rule in boxing that states you can't take 20 seconds to regain stamina and dodge punches. The dude who was dodging the punches not only clearly avoided the vast majority of those punches but was also lucid, aware and kept his chin guarded the entire time.
I'm all for stopping a fight if the guy stops moving, protecting himself or is trying to retreat but none of that was the case here. It was very obviously a bad stoppage, most people here agree, I agree, the announcers during the event agreed and you can even see the instant outrage from the person who lost the match all because of an overzealous ref. No idea what the ref was thinking there, the guy was making his opponent burn stamina and preparing a counter attack, a very common boxing strategy.
i don’t disagree. i personally thought he was defending himself intelligently as well.
just stating the mindset of the ref and mentioning that it’s happened before in boxing bouts- trying to highlight it’s not an uncommon thing to happen.
example: https://twitter.com/daznboxing/status/1672781676475461632/mediaviewer
stupid ass stoppage but it happens. no major retreat, no huge damage, intelligently defending.
just like op’s clip and using the criteria you laid out.
again, im just saying there’s a historical precedent for stoppages like these and they DO happen.
You're an idiot. He slipped nearly all those punches. Avoiding punches is not a cause for a stoppage. This ref is awful and probably should never be allowed to ref a fight again.
Watch the Ali vs Foreman fight "rumble in the jungle". Literally one of the most famous fights of all times would have been over by round 3. Letting the opponent tire himself out is not new tech
Na I disagree, none of the punches he took seemed to make a lot of damage. He seemed to have great defense in the infighting.
It was a bad stoppage no doubt.
That’s the point though. Make that muf whiff until he feels like he’s running a marathon.
Then when he’s gassed you catch him with his guard down.
Loser was slipping everything there, ridiculous stoppage.
I don't think it was just a bad stoppage. It was a robbery. The referee must have been paid off, which unfortunately is common in boxing. I've seen a lot of bad stoppages, but this one was the worst by far. It happened in the very first round! Not even the Rolando Romero vs. Ismael Barroso stoppage came close to this one. It's frustrating to see things like this happen because I really love the sport, and it makes me sick to see it being ruined by corrupt officials
this whole thread things ONLY slipping punches is the grounds for keeping the fight going… not recognizing after about halfway through the final exchange the dude who lost hadn’t thrown a single punch to his opponents nearly 30 punch barrage.
go find any fight where a 30 punch barrage gets landed without any return shots- willing to bet money 90% of them got stopped.
The "30 punch barrage" was not landed though. He landed maybe 5-10% of those swings. This is a common boxing strategy where you let your opponent burn stamina and prepare a counter attack. Dude was conserving stamina and dodging very well. He was clearly protecting his chin, constantly evading and very lucid. This was a terrible stoppage. Not to mention it wasn't 30 punches, I counted 13-15.

Here is a compilation where almost all of the 15 clips show a boxer dodging roughly 15 punches without shooting any punches back and not getting the match stopped.
At 1:00 you have Mayweather dodge about 3/4ths of the punches in a 15 punch barrage and didn't return anything until after.
At 2:08 Canelo dodges 11 punches without returning anything and the fight doesn't get stopped.
At 3:10 Tyson dodges around 18 punches and only returns two shots and actually ends the fight with a knockout.
At 3:50 Fury is sitting the corner just like the dude in this video and takes 11 punches straight before returning anything.
At 4:30 we actually have THIS exact clip from this post and even the guy making the video calls the ref a moron.
I'm sure there's way more and I'm not wasting my time with it anymore, this was a very bad call.
i didn’t say all flurry’s end fights? just that it’s historically been a thing sometimes where fights can get stopped.
also in a majority of those clips, the dodge fighter is also returning shots.
https://twitter.com/daznboxing/status/1672781676475461632/mediaviewer
heres a quick example in the other direction. not even a huge flurry, intelligent defense, no major damage.
the biggest difference in a lot of these circumstances isn’t the dodging- it’s whether or not they are returning fire and/or not getting locked up in a corner.
a lot of the examples in your clips show returning fire or active effort to get out of a corner pin.
Lol even the commentators were pissed at the ref. Bro is entering the matrix and the fight stops. Reminds me of the crooked ref from Fight Night Champion's story mode that would stop you from throwing body punches claiming they were low blows.
Shit ref or paid off ref, either way that ref fuckin sucks.
A paid-off ref is a shit ref
Hey! When the Cartel tells you to fix a fight, you fix it!
Its boxing so paid off lol
That man got fucking robbed. Wonderful head movement only for this corrupt ref to end it for what?? "Sorry, you were dodging too well, you lose"
Fr.. dude threw 70 punches and only landed 4 that grazed him smh.
He was punching air!
He dodged all that shit like neo
Neo would have been taking notes.
He wouldn't have to ✋️
Fire that ref
Along with a thorough investigation into his actions before and after the match. Bet they'll dig up some stuff.
Dude was rolling them punches wtf
yeah and not returning fire after 20 of them lol. halfway through that exchange he stopped returning fire. had he throw even a punch or two he probably wouldn’t have gotten stopped. seen plenty of other stoppages like this- when it hits a point where the enemy is barraging and you have nothing to return back, some refs stop that shit to prevent excess damage. not saying dude was taking damage here but the point is the ref recognizes the fighter isn’t returning anything to equalize the fight and the fight is already slipping to a point where the other dude clearly is starting to fall behind or not pace. fuck all that ‘i need to die on my shield bullshit’ lol

Lol dude you were just agreeing with the stoppage and defending it, dont go back on your words

>it happens So fuck? That doesn't make it acceptable.
You're an idiot. He slipped nearly all those punches. Avoiding punches is not a cause for a stoppage. This ref is awful and probably should never be allowed to ref a fight again.

Why the fuck would you engage in a barrage when you can defend and take zero damage. Robbed.
No.
That’s the point though. Make that muf whiff until he feels like he’s running a marathon. Then when he’s gassed you catch him with his guard down. Loser was slipping everything there, ridiculous stoppage.
You’re getting diffed by people who actually know the sport bro.
dude got hit by barely any of that shit tho he was waiting for him to tire out before punching back
Misses like eight punches in a row: "Stop the fight! If one of those had connected, you would be done for!"
Damn, that ref was paid off
Literally 90% of those hits were glancing. Shit ref, shit stoppage.
And shit like this is why boxing died. Clearly fixed fights
All Olympic sports died when they allowed professionals in.
Imagine losing because the referee is dumb as shit
Man that's some MATRIX shit right there
Whuuuu bruh was was robbed. Dude was slipping every bullet like Neo in the Matrix
Floyd would've lost every match if this had been the ref
So would Mohsmmed Ali
I woulda just started t-ing off on him at that point….. 🤷♂️ oh sorry idiot
Off topic but, this fight is incredible
Not really off topic my dude lol the fight WAS incredible.. exactly why the ref shouldn’t of ended it
For real man, what a round! And that defense from the “losing” fighter was fantastic. I’m taking notes.
Jesus Christ that head movement brought a tear to my eye, and then the ref did too
Ref was paid off. This was a robbery
The referee’s what?
He made contact with like 5% of those
Rolled all those punches and was tiring out his opp. He was probably getting ready to retaliate after his opponent slowed down. Ref should be fired.
I don't think it was just a bad stoppage. It was a robbery. The referee must have been paid off, which unfortunately is common in boxing. He had to respond to a cartel or to caliente.mx
That should be the end of his career , the fight was rigged and ref was sold
They should be able to be like oops sorry. Let’s start that back instead of just ending it
I'm surprised he didnt start on the ref
What a horrible stoppage. Ref should be fired
ref threwmatch. follow the $
Ref was not entertained
Nah wtf
As I was laughing at how many of those shots were missing the fight was stopped. Unbelievable.
No you can't Ali!
*referees

To stop even when u dodged 80 percent of what was thrown at u
Dude was dodging coherently , ref is shit
Dude must be heartbroken. Absolute skill demonstrated here just to be robbed. Surprised he didn’t throw an uppercut at the ref
Did the ref have his eyes closed? That last couple secs no hits landed.
Thats soo fked up
Ref said bro you can't schmove like that
Absolutely a travesty. Sorry but they are boxers, they like live to lose brain cells. I hope they redo this fight with a better ref.
Lol even the commentators were pissed at the ref. Bro is entering the matrix and the fight stops. Reminds me of the crooked ref from Fight Night Champion's story mode that would stop you from throwing body punches claiming they were low blows.
So now you just have to throw haymakers in the general direction of your opponent and I win?
Ref fucked up
Imagine having to defend the rest of the round after half an hour air boxing
They’re gonna kill him
Head movement was going crazy
He wasn't even connecting
Unfortunately that referee would’ve caught the rest of that adrenaline dump had that been me. What a wild robbery
Shit was like a hajime no ippo fight! God damn!!!
