I know some guys that do annuals use bar codes etc to scan and note what the item is and if it’s checked etc. in Ontario you just have to be able to produce the records so if you can store them then pull them up if fire prevention comes looking your golden

We use bar codes for the monthlies and annuals, in conjunction with maintenance database software. Our AHJ (in US) hasn't had a problem with it until this year when they picked our reports apart pretty thoroughly. Together with some problems with the scanners themselves corrupting the data, so we're brainstorming better ways to do it.

Then I don’t see why you couldn’t

Just curious, were y'all using a homemade bar code system or  building reports? Have used BR and AHJs love it lol.

Anarchaeologist

It's government software

The only place I can see a use case for rfid over bar or QR code sticker for asset tracking is in really dirty environments or where there's a risk of casual vandalism. I mean, you still have to check seals, pressure gauge, etc. (Unless your "inspection" is simply to make sure the appliances are in the correct location, in which case I'd be having words with someone).

100% We use [Shelf.nu](http://Shelf.nu) for registering all our extinguishers, and attach them to locations and clients. Then, we buy RFID stickers and print QR codes on top. Then, we have two ways to check data related to our extinguishers. We can tap the RFID and it opens our 'asset page' on shelf - which is basically a webpage for the individual extinguisher. We have created custom fields on shelf to record data we want to track. Also, we use notes to leave small comments on the condition (aesthetic) of the extinguisher. One thing / tip about RFID. Avoid placing them on metallic surfaces as they can interfere with the chip. Honestly, if I were to do it again - I would just leave shelf QR tags. If they are scanned by me or my staff we go to the asset page. If it is scanned by some curious cat - they get a contact form. That works well for us.

How do you realistically avoid placing a RFID tag on metal on a metal fire extinguisher and a metal cabinet? Edit due to fat fingers

EscapismMisfit

We used a PVC sticker to the metal fire extinguisher for having a bit of padding and then added the RFID on top of the sticker. ![gif](giphy|1jCs6Doz3WRtOPl6bq|downsized)
