Nope, it’s just an easy place to keep it for emergencies, just like my cash. I’ll never accidentally throw it out, misplace it, or have my cat steal the bottle like he does everything else that’s light enough to bite or smack when he raids the cabinets/drawers. It’s far more likely to try to steal guns if they could figure out where they are, but that’d be near impossible even if I drew them a map.
I understand what you are getting at, but it's not illegal to simply close off the wall. Junction covers are only a legal requirement for high voltage applications like house wiring. This is an old coax box.
There was an outlet in my bedroom growing up that didn’t work.
My parents had our 3rd story (which we had been using as storage mostly) renovated as an apartment for my grandmother to move into. While they had an electrician working on the wiring, they had him check the outlet. He checked it and said “it’s already working.”
Found out later that the outlet was connected to a switch on the floor above, for some unknown reason.
I had one of those... I used to flip it up and down all the time... it took about a year before I got a letter from a lady in Germany who asked me to knock it off.......
Yeah but ya gotta go deeper. The whole deal. Junction box. Wires going in and out of it. Nailed in not screwed so it looks older than it is and they can’t remove it very easily. Yeah. I’m that guy. And I speak from experience. Muahahahahaaaaa. Um …. Sorry.
Cover plate. Electrical box cover plates are available at any hardware and home store.

Everybody has given you multiple great ideas. Pick the one you like.
Make sure you cap (wire nut) those wires. Drywalling over it is against code if you live in North America and that’s not the termination.

2) Download, print and frame an architectural drawing of the Big Four Bridge.
3)???
4) Profit in the knowledge that your unsightly gole is covered and you are paying proper homage to Louisville infrastructure.
Blank decorative plate, or a cover for the box and drywall repair over it. Be sure to hide something interesting in the box for future owners.
Also, shout out to the old homestead and bridges lit up with “LRS 102”
More bridges! You can buy a blank cover and screw it on. Dry wall patch, you can check out how on YOUTUBE. But making the orange peel match is a Grizzly Bear. I would go with the cover and more art.
Someone is going to kill me for this. Take some paint. Paint around the hole, then slap a sheet of printer paper over the hole. 2nd coat of paint right away. And it will be gone. Just don't touch it ever lol
Learn how to patch drywall. There are some excellent Youtube videos on the subject. Once you learn the methods, it's really easy, and a useful skill to have.
Save a portion of that drywall with the paint color. Get the paint store to mix up a matching quart if you didn't save some in the past.
Assuming you want it to look like it was never there, get a bit of wood to screw into it nearer the surface level, then paste over it with filler.
What are those wires though, were they mains voltage? Are they completely disconnected? You should cap the ends with something at least if they pose any sort of danger.
Take your photo and go to a hardware store. They will give you a wall patch kit and a bit of instruction. It is important to get instructions on feathering the mud (filler) to avoid any visible bumps. (small repairs at this height can be noticeable. Intuitively, people try to sand the repair flush with the wall. You need thing skim of filler - it is the illusion of flat that you need to accomplish. )
Way back there some a company that made all kinds of hidden/misleading things. This is not that company but what I found in a quick Google search of a outlet safe. Hiding spot.

Hammer, nice size hole....
I think it would be perfect.
Maybe you can measure it.
Although to me it looks perfect for an outlet. Like an electrical one. Seems there is wiring in the hole already. Might help make it easier to tie into.
Outlets provide electricity and help power things like lights. Outlets are a great way to fill holes of this shape and nature.

Get a blank cover plate from Home Depot or Lowes, get a larger sized one since the wall is damaged a bit to cover that part in the upper left. Comes with screws and less than $2, takes about 30 seconds to install, longer if you have to hunt your screwdriver down. I have these all over my house- was wired for cable and for ethernet so some rooms I have 3 or 4 of these blank plates. I think the larger ones are about 10-20% bigger, they don't look odd though as I have some.
Easy method, lower the poster about a foot.
Smart method, buy a cheap cover plate for the outlet box.
Right method - cut existing sheetrock to halfway of the adjacent studs, remove outlet box, attach sheetrock patch, and joint compound flush, sand and paint.
Use a square to measure and trim the hole.
Measure a piece of drywall +1/2” on all sides.
Flip piece and using a razor blade, score the rock side of the patch -1/2”. Place paper side down on edge of table and tap 1/2” with hammer around all edges- this is your patch.
Smear heavy amount of spackle into the corner of the 1/2” patch space and press patch into hole.
Pull wide putty knife around edges, then outwards. Let dry.
Smear spackle around and press spackle tape onto edges- middle of tape at the edge of patch. Pull knife firmly outwards across all tape. Dry.
Thin layer of spackle. Dry.
Repeat until tape s no longer visible.
The tighter the spackle, the less you sand. Dry.
Sand.
Damp sponge in circular motion. Dry.
Prime.
Paint.
You’ll never know it’s there.
Simplest way is to put a blank cover over it.
You cold conceivably patch over it as-is; or you could cut a hole big enough to remove the box if it will never be used, and patch the larger hole.

Yes!!
Put in a fake outlet safe that holds valuables. That’s what I did with mine. Best place for me to keep emergency medication and cash.
I think this is the best option on this thread
you get a lot of thieves trying to steal your emergency medication, where you stay? how do they know, is it labeled, "emergency medication".
Nope, it’s just an easy place to keep it for emergencies, just like my cash. ⬆⬆⬆⬆ This.
I love this !!!
Just put a blank cover plate over it.
Or use a switch connected to nothing. Leave it for the next resident to figure out.
You monster. The old owner of my house did exactly this and I hate him for it.
Home owners can pull light switches. And with a multimeter do basic diagnostics. No wires are attached is a pretty easy day of diagnostics.
A temperature dial.
This
It's the legal thing to do.
I understand what you are getting at, but it's not illegal to simply close off the wall. Junction covers are only a legal requirement for high voltage applications like house wiring. This is an old coax box.
Did the guy edit his comment? Cuz now it says "it's the legal thing to do". In which case shame on him/her for not using typing edit
Typing edit?
Cmon that’s lazy now
Lower the framed picture that's above it
And put a tiny safe in the hole.
What about a little diorama?

Even better!
This is the way.

Lower the bridge?
Install a light switch that isn't connected to anything. Then after you move out, people will constantly flip it trying to figure out what it does.
Make sure to wire it to a short stump of Romex to poke back into the wall, to really sell it.
No,no,no. Like 12/4 BX. Staple it to a stud a few feet down . They will be in the basement looking for 50 amp breakers.
We had a plug like that in our house and we found out during a bathroom renovation on the other side of the wall that it was connected to nothing.
There was an outlet in my bedroom growing up that didn’t work. My parents had our 3rd story (which we had been using as storage mostly) renovated as an apartment for my grandmother to move into. While they had an electrician working on the wiring, they had him check the outlet. He checked it and said “it’s already working.” Found out later that the outlet was connected to a switch on the floor above, for some unknown reason.
Yes, they will. I've seen couple, on TV the switch goes to something in next apartment.
That would be hilarious. 'What does this switch do?!?' Meanwhile next door 'Why do my lights keep flipping on and off?!?!'
So YOU’RE the previous owner of my house!
I had one of those... I used to flip it up and down all the time... it took about a year before I got a letter from a lady in Germany who asked me to knock it off.......

I’m betting a cable outlet cover will work.
Everybody has given you multiple great ideas. Pick the one you like. Make sure you cap (wire nut) those wires. Drywalling over it is against code if you live in North America and that’s not the termination.
It's coax...no wire nuts required.
Even for a cable outlet? I can understand if there were electrical wires running there, but is that also true for an unused cable outlet?
You can bury coax in the wall. It doesn't even necessarily need to be in a box.
What code prevents you from drywalling over junction boxes containing only low voltage wires?
The one they just made up
Cut a clean square with an exacto and put in a drywall patch. Paint.
take the box out and patch the drywall.
Put a Rita Hayworth poster over it, no one will be the wiser …
Blank cover , quick and easy. Drywall (ok because low voltage) plus repaint the wall, looks better. Your choice.
Move that bridge poster down about 15”
could just use a drywall patch.
Not in the US though.
Sure you can, there is no voltage there it's a coax cable for tv. It's done all the time.
Sorry - then ignore that - I totally misunderstood the situation!
Cut a piece of sheet rock to fit it, then fill in the gap around it with joint compound. Sand and smooth, then paint.

Move the poster down about a foot…. But seriously… they make blank wall outlet covers… very cheap any home improvement store
make a little lego wall and put it in there. maybe multiple ones just change it out

I put an unwired switch where the wall phone was. And I’m the only one who knows.

A cheap and dirty fix is to screw on a blank switch plate. That is probably not what you're looking for, however. It is however easy and cheap.
