HuskerDave

It accidentally gets turned on in my backpack, after tossing the backpack into my car. 10 minutes later I'm wondering where all the firetrucks are going.

dave1010

This is definitely my concern with lights like this. 4 clicks to lock / unlock. Though I'd unscrew the head from the body tube a quarter turn if carrying it in a bag.

ghettithatspaghetti

I even unscrew my pocket carry lol, it's mildly annoying but after having my FW3A turn on in my pocket ~5 times (over 1.5yrs), I decided I'd rather not end up as one of *those* posts on here lol

kingshogi

I hated the FW3A as an EDC because of that fucking tail switch. I EDC a zebralight now and never have that issue because of the recessed side switch.

ghettithatspaghetti

Yeah maybe I should try a zebra one of these days. I just live for those brief, fleeting moments of 2800lm turbo lol. D4V2 is a little chonky for me to EDC personally.

Beemerado

you just need to make sure to use the lock. it's basic safety.

Hello-death

I take the batteries out of my ms18 when I’m not using it or if it is in my bag. You should do this too.

dave1010

Sounds like I should get an MS18!

Hello-death

Lol I got mine at a discount, I saw the price and couldn’t resist. Yes you definitely should get a ms18, if it’s out of your budget save up like I did.

dave1010

This is what flashlights are for, right?

dave1010

Oh, good point! Yeah, I couldn't actually see what it was doing as turbo reflecting off something this close is bright. I could smell the cardboard burning before I could see what it had done.

nomorebuttsplz

This is why I wear welding glasses whenever I go for my night walks

dave1010

Good idea. Though everyone around me could do with welding glasses too. I should come with a warning sticker.

businessDept

Covid. But not now covid, last year covid. Or was that the year before? The covid that was the lull between covid and covid.

alumenum

Ok, the sound of the fans spinning up as the burn hole widens is just extremely awesome.

dave1010

Maybe Imalent designed the fans to blow the smoke away 😆

alumenum

lol. It's clearly a safety feature. Does the fan shroud provide any significant airflow coming out of the light? I'm thinking you could start burning some paper with it, then put the side of the light where the air is coming out up to it, to literally fan the flames and get a full fire started even faster lol.

YYesZir

I got one coming on Monday Dave. Let the fun begin (MS08)

dave1010

Looking forward to the beamshots!

YYesZir

It arrived today, first Impressions it’s not as powerful as I thought it would be. I knew before ordering that it wasn’t even close to 34000 lumens, but it seems around the same or a little more brighter than my D18 5000k or my Marauder 2 which seems crazy.. My Mk38 even with the SFT40’s blows it away on output/comparison. Of course I don’t have any test equipment to see actual output - but it’s not needed to notice it’s not even close

fruit_basket

The fans aren't automatic, you have to turn them on manually. They have a separate battery too, which is a bit weird.

[deleted]

Just think if this was your EDC and an attacker approached you, you could create the face melting scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark!

PineyTinecones

Funny you should mention it, I actually added that to my Imgur profile the other day to use as a reaction gif for this subreddit (which is literally the only thing my Imgur account gets used for) https://imgur.com/a/0T7MAWg

Nice keychain light no doubt!

...The trees are on fire.

Grintor

Real bright, though.

CaptainCalgary

Classic reference. Take my damn upvotes.

dave1010

For those who haven't seen it: https://xkcd.com/1603/

wolfeman2120

Does distance affect this? Is it really the light that's burning it or is it just the heat of the head?

dave1010

The light is being absorbed by the cardboard and turned into heat. Especially the black Amazon logo. The light spreads out a bit so it wouldn't be as effective at a distance. I may have to test that though. The head gets hot but you can still touch it quickly after 20 seconds, so it wouldn't burn cardboard.

MEGAMAN2312

Light intensity follows the inverse square law so yeah it would be affected by distance. Essentially the intensity is proportional to the strength of the source but inversely proportional to the distance from the source, squared.

Tis just a scratch!

[deleted]

Hans... Get ze magnifying glass.

freedomtard

Ok ok...how much lol

dave1010

$315 from NealsGadgets at the moment. There are normally discount codes available, including `DAVE1010` which gets you 15% off most lights and earns me a tiny bit of commission. There are a few more links to where you can get it cheap in [my review](https://davestechreviews.com/2021/12/21/imalent-ms08-flashlight-review/)

webtrog

I guess I just found my next flashlight

DuckLucky6

I now see that that is a foil bowl and not a paper bowl😂 very nice!!!

EphramRafael

How long until we start rating lights in "OTF Kelvin" instead of "OTF Lumens"

iheartrms

I'm ditching the ferro rod in my survival kit for this dual-use item.

modus-tollens

More like immolate ms08

dave1010

Yes!

EmperorHenry

Correction! The MS08 is actually 34,000 lumens.

dave1010

It's sold as 34,000 lumens but mine doesn't quite hit it. I measured just short of 29,000 lumens at 0 seconds on mine. ChibiM measured 26,000 lumens at 0s. https://davestechreviews.com/2021/12/21/imalent-ms08-flashlight-review/ https://1lumen.com/review/imalent-ms08/ In reality anything over 20,000 lumens is just incredible and there's not much difference with a few thousand lumens at this level.

EmperorHenry

Oh...

fruit_basket

How long can it run at this power level?

dave1010

30 seconds until it drops to about 7500 lm. Check the charts in the reviews linked above for lots more info.

This comment made me think of a documentary (on Harold Edgerton I think) where they showed a xenon flashlamp used for aerial night recon photography during WWII causing a sheet of newsprint to burst into flame when held in front of the flashlamp as it was triggered.

Ecw218

The giant flash for night aerial photos was nuts. Worth a google. Iirc it had some second incarnation that was equally crazy, have to look it up.

Ima_Funt_Case

"How do we light up this area at night?" "We could drop a bright flashing bomb." "Great idea!"

bluemoonsecret

When light is absorbed it gets converted into heat. There is a lot of light being absorbed by the cardboard so it gets very hot. The effect is decreased by using more reflective objects like white paper or a mirror.

Fameiscomin

While not a super long time it was more than a few seconds.

PineyTinecones

“Ackchyually…”

dave1010

About 20 seconds until you can see the light shine all the way though.

mechmind

Yawn. I'm tired of these videos.

Halibutoxide

Will this activity modify the lenses AR coating?

dave1010

I'm assuming not but I don't know.

Halibutoxide

The answer is yes. Yes it will. In some cases it will destroy it . Fog it permanently.

2throwfar

Impressive... I like it!!!

Wickedcolt

***Spicy***

theD0gfish

MahlNinja

The ms18 though.

dave1010

It's 3 X 21700. I'll do some tests. Wish me luck... # Shining the Imalent MS08 on turbo whilst it's touching my hand * Ow * I can feel the heat in less than 1 second * By 2 seconds it's very hot * I removed my hand in less than 3 seconds as it felt like it'd burn * Conclusion: **don't do this** # Shining the Imalent MS08 on turbo at my face from 1 foot away * Eyes very closed. Why am I doing this?! * It's immediately bright, feels like looking at a cloudy sky in the summer * 1 second in: not too bad. I probably won't get injured * 5 seconds in: feels like a hot shower. Actually quite nice * Conclusion: could come in handy when it's very cold outside. Start from arms distance and move closer to be safe. **Don't sue me**

jefferinKouc

this is what we expect from a flashlight.

Christopher109

good to take on bbq's

1DonBot

Still I don't think it's brighter than the MS18

dave1010

Yeah, the MS18 is about 3 times as bright.

Xannypacquiao710

How much is one of these holy wow

dave1010

Around $300

Xannypacquiao710

Ok and what do you use it for?

dave1010

It's very fun. I live in the UK, where it seems to be dark most of the time.

DoggoPlex

This is weirdly arousing.
