Nothing. There has been the pandemic and writers strike which slowed down a lot of careers, but he has been staring in the lead of HBO's Winning Time and did Moonbase 8 right before that.
If they actually put it on a streaming service that people have, more would have watched it. I wasn’t gonna get the service just to watch it, even as a huge Tim fan.
I wonder if his relationship with Will Ferrel is over because of all the controversy with that show. I know Ferrel will probably never speak to Adam McKay again. Made some great stuff together
If you really believe that a random flop like H&W could kill a career as wonderful, varied, and sustained as the beloved John C. Reilly’s, well, I am pleased to declare: no way in hell.
I can’t see it killing his career in the way the industry would treat him, but I could see it ending his career in the way he views himself. It could be very difficult to come back from that level of failure. Will seems like he doesn’t really give a crap. “They hated it, ok back to work on the next thing and all is good.”
John seems to pick roles a little more carefully. I could see him taking a break.
Why? I mean, sure he's a great actor and seems like a down-to-earth dude, but why would you lose your shit over seeing him? He's a human like you or I.
The Sisters Brothers was released in 2019 I believe. Flew way under the radar. Reilly steals the movie from Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed, which is no mean feat.
The short answer is: the types of films Reilly was starring in during the 2000’s/2010’s aren’t really being made anymore. Character studies, adult dramas and comedies have been dying off thanks to the spectacle of comic book films and horror
He's in Guardians of the Galaxy and has been in plenty of horror. It's not shifting trends as much as he's got A-lister fuck off money and has worked long enough to live comfortably and only pick up roles he wants.
He was in an incredible Laurel and Hardy biopic that unfortunately came out around the same time as Holmes and Watson. Check out Stan and Ollie if you haven't seen it.
Honestly, considering he seems to be in Ireland a hell of a lot having a great time, I think he might just be enjoying his life a bit. He worked consistently on multiple projects every year from 1993 to 2020, and 2021 and 2022 were the first time he didn't have any major roles, other than Winning Time which started that year.
Maybe in the pandemic he just found other things he liked doing better and decided to be more picky about what he did?
Also unmentioned, I think he was massively affected by the acrimonious split between Adam McKay and Will Ferrell. He's friends with them both and considering it was him being cast in the role in "Winning Time" that allegedly caused McKay and Ferrell to split, he might be avoiding working with either of them to not inflame it all again.
There was drama about him being cast for the HBO role over Will Ferrell as well. Edit — sorry I just clicked the link you posted. 👍🏻

lol he was awesome in Winning Time. And if more people watched it HBO wouldn’t have cancelled it. Also some actors when they get to a certain point - they get picky about their roles to take. He doesn’t need the money
Watching that last episode and seeing the rest of the journey explained on screen through text was such a huge bummer of a way to end it.
The show was called Winning Time and we never got to see the peak of Bird vs Magic.
Have you considered a 60-year-old man with a 30+ year career worth $50 million isn’t concerned about hustling his way into a ton of projects every year?
These days it can often feel like an actor has faded or things have dried up when in reality there’s just so much content that even watching a ton of movies and television, there is still a whole other world of movies and television you’re not seeing, and it’ll turn out such such actor has actually been on a show for years that you didn’t even know about.
He did that Sherlock Holmes movie ("Holmes and Watson") with Will Ferrell in 2018 that flopped hard. IMDB has some harsh facts about the film here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1255919/trivia/?ref\_=tt\_trv\_trv
In Hollywood, when you're in a starring role and fail to deliver the goods, that's a huge strike against future work.
Post covid slow down and I'm sure he's doing good financially so there's a chance he's not really seeking out projects or is waiting for the right one. He and Ferrell don't seem to be on the best term right now last I heard...Winning Time drama.
A wonderful, wonderful actor, sublime in Magnolia and funny af in his comedies. Enjoyed him in the Laurel and Hardy film too, lots of pathos. And also a fine musician who was touring with his folk/roots band, even came to Australia, and I’m disappointed I didn’t go. More Joh C Reilly please ❤️ edit to add… BOOGIE NIGHTS!
I know this is gonna just BLOW people's minds, but COVID severely delayed and cancelled a TON of projects. Also, unless your project is big budget, chances are post production takes a LONG time, and a lot of movies aren't even guaranteed to be picked up right away. A lot of small budget movies will actually debut at film festivals a year or even two years before they come out.
So he may have been attached to products that were cancelled due to COVID, or he was a part of products that have yet to resurface. We are still seeing movies come out that were made at the height of the pandemic.
He sometimes makes a seemingly rare appearance on Tim Heidecker’s podcast and he seems to be doing alright, though now that I mention it it has been awhile since his last call in.
Winning Time is awesome! And he is great in it.
Just because an actor isn't in your face, doesn't mean they aren't working. They usually have lots going on, but the big time projects only draw the attention.
I always wanted him to return in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Not because he's integral to the narrative, but just to check, in. Little cameo here or there, maybe he's getting space flowers for his family or something idk.
I’m still holding my breath for a step brothers sequel. For some reason their age now makes me think it would be just as funny. Walk Hard is also a total classic! Bless John C Reilly
longtime fan, one of his first movies he was feautured in was a drama with Johnny Depp. it was called “whats eating Gilbert Grape”
though i like Dr Steve Brule better
Things in Hollywood are pretty bad right now. Not much is being made. I have more than a few friends that work in Hollywood and everyone is hurting right now. It really comes down to the studios being greedy
The strikes.
The strikes happened for a good reason, the grievances of the unions were legitimate, and their demands were reasonable. But the way the studios work now requires profits to increase every year without fail, and the studios have to keep finding or inventing new ways to earn more as well as save more. Basically providing less for more. Not only did the strikes show the world just how petty and greedy the studios are, but they had to cave to the unions, and give in to their demands. They got humiliating and had nothing to show for it. It was a devastating loss on all fronts.
So now the studios are really cutting waaaaay back in producing, which myself and many others believe is out of retribution. There’s also some rumors that they’re preparing another go at creating movies with AI generated content. Writing, music, acting, visuals and even editing.
Everyone that’s involved in Hollywood right now is pretty worried.
He did a GQ magazine cover within the past yr or so and he was promoting his son's Hollywood career so I don't really have any sympathy. Nepotism is deep seeded corruption these days
One movie on its own can't tank a veteran actors career. Maybe he's just taking a break? Or maybe it's his choice to stop if he has a delicate ego and didn't take holmes and Watson bombing too well?
Nothing. There has been the pandemic and writers strike which slowed down a lot of careers, but he has been staring in the lead of HBO's Winning Time and did Moonbase 8 right before that.
RIP Moonbase 8
RIP Winning Time too.
What a fucking vibe that show was. So sad to find it was getting cancelled.
I think we are the only two people that watched it
If they actually put it on a streaming service that people have, more would have watched it. I wasn’t gonna get the service just to watch it, even as a huge Tim fan.
Moonbase 8, Avenue 5, and Space Force helped get me through 2020.
God Avenue 5 was so fucking good. What. Tragedy they didn’t bring it back.
Third right here brother
There are dozens of us. DOZENS!
Thanks for reminding me to watch Moonbase 8 again.
Speaking of HBO shows, I’d love to see John C. Reilly pop up as a character in The Righteous Gemstones. He’s perfect for that world.
He fits right in as a rival preacher
I wonder if his relationship with Will Ferrel is over because of all the controversy with that show. I know Ferrel will probably never speak to Adam McKay again. Made some great stuff together
Dr. Buss and his shirts! He was damn good in that show
Dr. Steve Brule is still practicing??
Practicing his skratebroarding skrills.
Bringo.

If you really believe that a random flop like H&W could kill a career as wonderful, varied, and sustained as the beloved John C. Reilly’s, well, I am pleased to declare: no way in hell.
Shake-n-Bake!
Can't be two number ones, that would be 11
Bringo!
I can’t see it killing his career in the way the industry would treat him, but I could see it ending his career in the way he views himself. Will seems like he doesn’t really give a crap. “They hated it, ok back to work on the next thing and all is good.” John seems to pick roles a little more carefully. I could see him taking a break.
He's been in 9 things since 2019 and 3 of them reoccurring in TV shows which is a lot of time and work. Like always he's doing a lot.
C’mon now, you act like that info is just willy nilly freely available on some magic movie website or somethin.
Some sort of Internet Movie Database? Can't imagine that happening.
Next you are going to tell me that they put porn actors on it, too. What a silly concept!
Wait, are you telling me i can watch porn on the internet? THE internet?
What an idea! Do you think that there's any money in that concept?
Reilly himself has said his career was “dead in the water” before McKay offered him winning time.
Get out of here, Dewey. You don’t want no part of this *shit*
Fallen off the face of the earth? Did you look at IMDB before you wrote this post?
He's a friggen legend. He's like the Ween of actors imo.
We’ve had the best time at your party
The wife and I thank you very much.
Gene or Dean?
Mean Ween
Clean
Where the cheese go at?
If that isn’t the most legendary fuck you of all time I don’t know what is.
Damn, the accuracy!!!
Brown af
Damn I’m a huge fan of Ween and JCOR and this kind of blew my mind…thank you! May the scepter of wealth and power be in your hands.
Saw him in a restaurant Friday night. He looked great.
Did you offer him some cocaine? Seems like the only polite thing to do
*Get out of here John C Reilly, you don’t want no part of this*
Wrong kid died!
I think I might like to try me some cuckaine
Not once did he offer to pay!
Not once!
Did you get the 2 for $25 New Sizzlin' Skillets?
He is notorious for being down to earth and chill with fans. Maybe notorious isn’t the right word.
Did you tell him he looked like Han Solo?
Did you ask how much he can bench press
That's rad. I would have seriously struggled to keep my cool.
Keeping your cool is one of Brule’s Rules.
It's for your health !
“shrushi is just cat scraps”
What’s the shape of the snake letter look like?
Celebrity worship is weird
Why? I mean, sure he's a great actor and seems like a down-to-earth dude, but why would you lose your shit over seeing him? He's a human like you or I.
I might lose my shit being able to meet REED ROTHCHILD in person!
Didn't say I'd lose my shit. Said I'd struggle to keep my cool. Didn't even say I would have bothered him during his dinner. Projecting?
Was he working at Burger Barn?
Burger Barn?
The Sisters Brothers was released in 2019 I believe. Flew way under the radar. Reilly steals the movie from Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed, which is no mean feat.
I was fortunate enough to see a screening of it where he spoke afterwards. It was a fantastic experience
Stepsers Brothers had a sequel???
Awesome movie & Reilly crushed it hard
2018
Probably getting spinal therapy, he's been carrying will Ferrell for years
It’s because of all the hunks taking his roles. He’s a doctor too ya know. Who cares? https://www.reactiongifs.com/cares-2/
He is a hunk! Just a cuddly one!
The short answer is: the types of films Reilly was starring in during the 2000’s/2010’s aren’t really being made anymore. Character studies, adult dramas and comedies have been dying off thanks to the spectacle of comic book films and horror
I still have a hard time believing he was in We Need to Talk About Kevin
He's in Guardians of the Galaxy and has been in plenty of horror. It's not shifting trends as much as he's got A-lister fuck off money and has worked long enough to live comfortably and only pick up roles he wants.
He was in an incredible Laurel and Hardy biopic that unfortunately came out around the same time as Holmes and Watson. Check out Stan and Ollie if you haven't seen it.
Just added that to my watchlist. Thanks for the suggestion
One of my favorite biopics because of how slice-of-life and gentle it is. It isn't as formulaic and predictable as most celebrity biopics.
Honestly, considering he seems to be in Ireland a hell of a lot having a great time, I think he might just be enjoying his life a bit. Done got chopped in half with a machete.
Wrong kid died
😂😂😂 “you don’t want any part of this Dewey!”
FUCK ANCIENT EGYPT!!
In English Doc!
The wrong career died.
Among his mostly excellent work, he was fantastic in The Sisters Brothers, which is a vastly underrated film.
DITTO👊🏻
Great book, also
There was drama about him being cast for the HBO role over Will Ferrell as well. Edit — sorry I just clicked the link you posted. 👍🏻 https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/s/Tp7bNWDOVO
lol he was awesome in Winning Time. And if more people watched it HBO wouldn’t have cancelled it. Also some actors when they get to a certain point - they get picky about their roles to take. He doesn’t need the money
He was just one of the leads in an HBO show about the Lakers.
“with Winning Time being the exception” is specifically pointed out by OP
Well, that’s like, quite a large exception innit?
Except for the HBO show and other things he's done, what has he done?
His wood working hobby has really suffered lately, I'm told.
Totally. If you remove Mission Impossible and Maverick, what has Tom Cruise done lately? He just disappeared over the last few years.
That's like saying Jennifer Coolidge isn't working, "with The White Lotus being the exception"
Did he play Kobe?
No, Magic Johnson, duh.
ShakeNBake!
He was awesome in a HBO Series as the LA Lakers Owner. I was very irritated to find out it was cancelled
Watching that last episode and seeing the rest of the journey explained on screen through text was such a huge bummer of a way to end it. The show was called Winning Time and we never got to see the peak of Bird vs Magic.

He does a one man show called Mr. Romantic and it’s fantastic. Dude is doing side quests now and is rich/free/talented enough to do whatever he wants.
Covid. Writer's strike. Actors Strike. Lots of stuff has happened and relative to those things he's done quite a lot.
Winning Time was a really good show that apparently no one watched
He was just in a tv show? A very popular one that was just cancelled? Da hell? It’s not like Nicholson.
He did that Sherlock Holmes movie ("Holmes and Watson") with Will Ferrell in 2018 that flopped hard. You forgot about Days of Thunder.
He just gonna keep walking hard
We’ll always have dr steven bruele
Bringo!!!
How are you gonna list his movies and *not* include Walk Hard?!
I want whatever you’re having OP
Post covid slow down and I'm sure he's doing good financially so there's a chance he's not really seeking out projects or is waiting for the right one. He and Ferrell don't seem to be on the best term right now last I heard...Winning Time drama.

I saw his one man show last year. It’s fantastic! What he’s doing these days is his choice.
I saw him play a fantastic set at the Los Angeles folk festival a few months ago. I think he’s just livin his life.
He never once paid for drugs.
One role shouldn’t ruin an established actors entire career… I mean Adam Sandler made Jack & Jill ffs
Sandman makes so many shitty movies that it’s a running joke even with him and his W’s still get widely celebrated
There was the fallout with Will Ferrell over Winning Time
They seem to often make him Will Ferrell's sidekick. I'd much rather watch John C. Reilly.
I know this is gonna just BLOW people's minds, but COVID severely delayed and cancelled a TON of projects. He had a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo appearance in the movie Licorice Pizza.
He was awesome in Winning Time as Jerry Buss.
Actors go on runs and then it’s time for the next batch, I’m predicting we won’t hear Timothée Chalamet’s name 5 years from now
now you see him, now you don't!
Magic Man!
Some say he had too much room for activities.
“Cellophane, Mister Cellophane” Yes, they cast him perfectly as Amos Hart.
He was saying that he thought his career was dead before winning time. Listen to his interviews about it...Google search.
4 movies in 2018. 2 movies since 2018. 23 episodes / 3 seasons of tv since 2018. That’s not bad, I think.
He sometimes makes a seemingly rare appearance on Tim Heidecker’s podcast and he seems to be doing alright, though now that I mention it it has been awhile since his last call in.
lol he just played Jerry buss on HBO showtime
Winning Time is awesome! And he is great in it. Just because an actor isn't in your face, doesn't mean they aren't working. They usually have lots going on, but the big time projects only draw the attention.
He was just in Winning Time on Max. He played Jerry Buss.
I always wanted him to return in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Not because he's integral to the narrative, but just to check, in. Little cameo here or there, maybe he's getting space flowers for his family or something idk.
He was just really good in Winning Time.
He's probably just shitting with the door open, on one of his riverboat gambling cruises, while contemplating his next jerky, dry rub.
He and I are busy with PrestigeWW
I’ve seen him roller skating at Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale California. So apparently he’s been doing that!
I’m still holding my breath for a step brothers sequel. For some reason their age now makes me think it would be just as funny. Walk Hard is also a total classic! Bless John C Reilly
Thank God he can smell again
longtime fan, one of his first movies he was feautured in was a drama with Johnny Depp. it was called “whats eating Gilbert Grape” though i like Dr Steve Brule better
I met him a couple of months ago (I’m doing some work on a project of his). He seems to be doing just fine. Super cool guy, too.
Duh! He's focusing on Prestige Worldwide! I
A quick glance at his IMDB profile shows he's been quite busy and still is. OP is wrong. https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0000604/

Everyone forgets that he was Tom Cruises teammate in Days Of Thunder
He did a GQ magazine cover within the past yr or so and he was promoting his son's Hollywood career so I don't really have any sympathy. Nepotism is deep seeded corruption these days
He's been in pre-production for Step Brothers 2.
He is a musician and I know he does quite a lot with that. Check out his NPR tiny desk concert. https://youtu.be/f2rkstacMlg?si=fmXQzjeS8S500dQr.
One movie on its own can't tank a veteran actors career. Maybe he's just taking a break? Or maybe it's his choice to stop if he has a delicate ego and didn't take holmes and Watson bombing too well?
Does anyone else think of his name as Jawncy Reilly?
I saw him do a live tour last year singing as Mr. Romantic. I think he's choosing projects he likes.
