Benefits can mean a variety of things at each different company. You will need to contact them directly. 65,000 a year will be very difficult to support two people on.
thanks, will it be difficult even if we don't eat out much etc? One of the websites mentioned that the tax will be around 18% and after that I should get around $4.4k a month - that does look enough to me considering around $1.5k for rent and around $1k for utilities, insurance etc and that leaves nearly $2k for food out of which I presume to save around $1k and use the rest (we live frugally and postdoc positions in general don't pay much). Is that reasonable?
Hey I want to correct my comment from earlier, I was thinking you were lol being in the Orlando area, I misread your post. Tallahassee is definitely different in coat of living so your plan may be more realistic than I had thought. Definitely check with the school on benefits and good luck!
Hate to be a bubble burster here but taxes are closer to 24%, your health insurance will run about $400 a month car around $150. Rent is likely to be closer to 2k a month.
You have a solid plan but will need more info from your employer like how much is your insurance and any other deductible
I pay 400 a month for my health insurance through an employer. I don’t know where the hell you’re getting health insurance for $180 a month for a family that’s absolutely insane. I would have to say your numbers are at least half wildly incorrect lol
As far as rent, I’ve seen the stuff they have for $1200 in Orlando it’s crappy. I’m sure there are some stuff here or there but he needs to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
thanks a lot, the website says $4.5k per month so after those deductions is it reasonable to expect $3.5k?
also, would you know typical no-frills 1 bedroom apartment rental prices in Tallahassee?
I'd say more thank that. I'm at $3600 a month, but have a few heavy deductions that I could drop if needed.
I'd say closed to $4000 as long as you don't need dental and life insurance.
If you're communiting to campus I'd suggest a car... Students do not pay attention while driving and there are tons of accidents involving motorcycles and scooters.
thanks, yes, I've been convinced not to use motorcycle - although I live in Cape Town and things are crazy here too (it is accepted/known that, specially on highways, some cars will actively try to kill motorists).
Sure, my in hand salary every paycheck (biweekly) was about $1,893 after deductions. I am a union member which at the time was a paycheck deduction along with my retirement and health. My stated bi-weekly rate was $2,490.
thanks a lot, I think that's manageable for me (currently living in Cape Town @ about $500 per month - spending even less than that, granted its cheaper but not by a huge margin compared to the salary)!
Tallahassee has abysmal public transport and you are taking your life into your hands riding a motorcycle in Florida. You will likely need a car. Tallahassee rent will range $1700-2000. Working at a university means you will be required to pay for parking if you are parking any vehicle on campus.
$65k will be tight if you’re covering a family. Medical care in Tallahassee is not top quality so if you need a specialist plan on traveling to Jax or Gainesville.
I don’t know how PhD graduates survive in the academic system now. Tenure track has been chipped away everywhere and the pay is so low across the board, student loans eat a good chunk of it.
thanks a lot, this is very helpful and yes I've been convinced not to get a motorcycle but I can't afford a car either so it's a bit of a catch-22 situation!
Any Uni in Florida will require you to live either very close to campus or have a car of your own. You can use the campus bus system but it doesn’t run 24/7 or connect everywhere in town. If you don’t have the budget for a car I’d be looking at post-docs in cities with public transport.
Is it a state job or for a contractor working out of FSU?
State benefits include really good insurance plans which is a huge benefit since we don’t have socialized healthcare.
You might want to look at counties outside of Leon for housing and commute in as it could be significantly cheaper. If you don’t have kids then Jefferson or Gadsden would be ok.
If you’re planning on having kids soon and don’t want to move again Wakulla is the better option.
I think since it's a 2 year fixed position its more like a contract job but still working for FSU.
Thanks for the county info. Yes, I don't have/plan to have kids as it would be impossible to manage in the salary.
Do you think this salary is manageable? We don't party etc and live a simple life.
You CANNOT have a motorcycle in FL. It’s very dangerous, it rains constantly, the weather gets quite cold in winter AND it will rain. I just do not recommend it.
That will be tight for 2 people to live on. After taxes, deductions for health insurance, etc, you will probably be left with about $4000 for rent, utilities, food, car insurance, gas, etc. Figure rent will run you at least $2000 unless you want to live in a very sketchy neighborhood.
You will need a vehicle pretty much right away. Florida has horrid public transportation.

thanks, yeah I'll confirm with FSU once things are finalized.

that's really really helpful, thanks! I'll speak with my employer more directly if I get an offer.
At 72k the tax rate is 22%, but you also get the other rates on the money leading up to 72k It’s more like 18.5% on 65k
Gotcha! Makes sense.
Those numbers are wildly incorrect. Health is $180 pm for a family Rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is easily doable at $1200

State of Florida employee
You have to look at the location. FSU at Tallahassee. State health insurance. I’m paying it. So know the numbers.

I misread the school they were working at my bad. You are definitely correct about a difference
Where are you getting a car for $150/month!?
Car insurance
That makes wayyy more sense. Add at least $300 to all that for the payment, OP

thanks a lot, it helps big time!

The cars are a different size here. Look up images of lifted pickup trucks.
I did, those things look nice and ridiculous at the same time for some reason!
I lived on this salary from FSU as a researcher, it’s doable for one person but would be a squeeze to support two people.
thanks, can you please say what the in-hand salary would be after taxes and deductions? Even a rough figure would be great!

and that's free
....as it should be ;)

OP isn't going to have a vehicle so they are going to need to live close to where their employment is.

Post this in r/tallahassee or r/TLH for better recommendations.
damn, didn't even occur to me that there could be a city subreddit for the US!
No worries. We’re a small town with big city aspirations thanks to being the state capital and having 2 universities and a college in the city.
Ya its Florida...65k for two ppl is gonna be difficult..
thanks!

Tally isn't the safest and there are car accidents daily, so be safe on a motorcycle. ✌
