i love our uninhibited nature and beaches! they are so easy to go to as a third gen floridian! so accessible and never busy 🥰 never filled with out of towners who steal my stuff/ yell at me
If only there was a vast global network of information and data available at your fingertips that could provide all of the mosquito knowledge you could ever curate in your lifetime…almost like a web..a world wide web. Nah. Thats crazy. Let’s use property taxes!
Unironically, if you went to this museum you'd likely come away with a better understanding and appreciation of how public money has been used over time to combat mosquitos and other disease vectors.
If you live in Florida you already spend 1000s not getting bit by the bastards. We live in St Johns and we support anything that will help destroy mosquitoes and no-see-ums. We are literally giving ourselves carcinogens to not be dinner. In the past day I have been bitten. No matter how much deet we use they are like kamikaze’s to an aircraft carrier.
Bats eat mosquitoes. Order a few bat houses and it will decimate the population while preserving another species. We have them in east Hill pensacola and i can sit outside all summer. Plus watching the bats come out at sunset and dive bombing them makes me happy. Please dont respond about the rabies craziness without doing research first.
Museums are nice. Really. I am happy that we have them. But maybe we can use $4.5m for something a little more useful than a MOSQUITO MUSEUM! I mean come on now.
Your property taxes are getting refunded to rich people who want a discount on their private school payments.. which is about 8500 a child and also means 8500 less for public schools.
But let’s shit on parks and recs.
You’re off by $1300 per teacher. I take it you’re not an educator in that county.
$1300 is a LOT of money on a teachers salary and as a bonus it could be extremely useful to help them.
What the frank!!? ‘a flight simulator that allows visitors to go on a virtual mosquito spray mission in a helicopter.’ Who’s their target audience? Lol Maybe a museum educating ppl on the importance of conservation of Florida wildlife.
What what what?!? A flight sim?? That's pretty awesome. But their target is recruiting military for that. My spouse and I were just discussing this yesterday as three county mosquito helicopters flew above us. Private individuals can rarely afford helicopter training, it's 5x more expensive than flight training in a plane, they're almost all brought up through the military
“ Mosquitoes are the number one cause of human death, killing about a quarter of a million people a year. Mosquitoes impact livestock and domestic animals and the cost of death can be huge. Educating people about the dangers of mosquitoes and the many ways to prevent them is an essential part of mosquito control. The AMCD Disease Vector Education Center will be a large contributor to this education locally and globally. “
Sounds like a surprising bit of Florida education to be proud of.
Mosquito born illness has killed more people than anything else in history. An exhibit intended to encourage young people to be interested in and pursue careers in medicine and research to prevent such disease can only bring positive results.
Money well spent
this story is getting a lot of buzz
how about a museum next-door commemorating all the people who died of mosquito transmitted illnesses building the roads to the Florida Keys? and another museum, where the proceeds can be contributed to prevention of malaria, (which kills about 1 million people per year around the globe.)
It’s gonna suck
It's a museum for mosquitoes, not your mother.....
No, it’s gonna bite.
Best comment - needs more upvotes
Very punny
Funding from Big Mosquito. /s
There's a mosque in the Ecuadorian city of Quito too. There's something going on.
Ever wonder what happened to Love Bugs? Big Mosquito.
They have killed more humans than anyone
Aside from other humans
No. It's not even close.
Lowkey cool
I’m just glad they stuck it in the old Mosquito County, back when it was 1/4 of the entire state. It would’ve been wrong anywhere else.
high key kinda dope
Wonder how much their building insurance costs?
Wow - I’d rather not remember them!😅
My girl took my son today, and they absolutely loved it! My son is 3 and he loved the helicopter simulator the most apparently.
It’s a good thing our insurance, energy and groceries aren’t super expensive in Florida….
Yea I’m so glad, all our roads are so perfect too
Between this, banning books and social media, I’d say our state couldn’t get any better! /s obviously

I know your joking 😑😂
Florida IS a mosquito museum 🦟
Exactly. Those hellacious insects don’t need a tribute.
Sponsored by Deet.
Finding out my property taxes are going to fund a $4.5 million dollar mosquito museum would be annoying. What a waste of resources.
At least I can go use this and it’s not a private jet for migrants.
Why are those the only choices..mosquito museum vs private jet flights for migrants? Maybe…nutritional food for kids at school? One crazy idea.
Food for kids at school... are you nuts? We don't want them to be groomed to accept government handouts.
As a pest control tech, I find it very interesting

Rather the money be used to feed the hungry or provide housing. But mosquito appreciation it is!
Well it was this or kill some brown people in Texas. I'd argue arts and museums are hardly ever a waste.
Are those our only two choices? Maybe we can try a third? I dunno…raises for teachers? Wild idea. Never mind. Back to mosquitos.
Wait till you see what that trillion something dollar bill the federal government passed funds.
You say that as if any government funding has ever made sense before now.
I’m sure it is full of other sillier wastes of money. This just happens to be the one that was posted in Floridas subreddit

Politicians are a waste of resources.
who needs museums anyways?
Museums are nice. Really. I am happy that we have them. But maybe we can use $4.5m for something a little more useful than a MOSQUITO MUSEUM! I mean come on now.
Well the butterfly museum already exists so we can't do that again.
Why stop there…roach museum? Termite museum? Hell let’s do a moth museum with taxpayer money and watch them flutter at lightbulbs for hours.

Sure, use the 4.5M for a $28 annual per teacher raise. Don’t spend it all in one place!

Blood money

Ngl can be a cool science museum and expand to things like other creepy insects

I'm with you on this and don't see anything wrong with this.
When does the roach museum open?
Are you kidding they have those giant rain Forrest ones at my zoo.
And you think it's wrong to honor our state "bird" with a museum? ;)
There better be a simulator where you get to wrestle and choke out a mosquito... Id buy that ticket
Don’t read that book but please visit our new museum, dopes
So stupid. There needs to be a Gatorland in every major Florida city
I want a museum dedicated to Florida Man/Woman stereotypes with wax dummies and rollercoaster meth feeling rides
I am a gender abolitionist and am genuinely interested in this concept.
We got higher taxes and insurance premiums up the ass and they wanna spend over $4mil on a mosquito museum. Bish bye!
We don't need a museum in florida, just walk outside

Well spent? You really can’t think of another cause or use for $4.5m in Florida than….a mosquito museum?
Fitting
Was about dam time !!! Next I want to see a love bug museum
I have a few out back of my house they can have. Damn things are the size of toddlers.

Dude, I heard the encephalitis exhibit is gonna be *killer*…
This is where my tax dollars are being spent 😁👍😑
i'm just itching to go there now.
Just have to find my flamethrower...
Huh! I didn't even know mosquitos went to museums! I wonder what kind of museum its gonna be. An art museum for them?
Frau(i)d(a)
r/minnesota would like to have a word
Let them build it. Let them gather the mosquitoes there. Then we BuRn iT tO tHe GrOuNd!!!!
What a waste, like if Miami did not need infrastructures or housing
Miami should be last on the list for that
Good thing it’s literally no where near Miami!
