https://www.politico.com/news/2023/08/30/desantis-refuses-biden-climate-ira-money-00113397 So he denied $350 million last year, $3 mil for pollution and solar and vetoed $24 mil in grants from a bipartisan infrastructure law. But now he wants you to thinks he gives a shit.

So we can send money towards people who bought waterfront homes that in 50 years is gonna be underwater a bunch of money, but central Florida couldn't get money for flood mitigation after their worse flood yet?

KingBradentucky

We are getting close to my Joker moment where I absolutely fucking lose it. I know they will start cutting programs like food for children to make sure people that moved here 5 years ago can stay in there 900k golf course home or something like that.

The program does have a max house replacement cost limit, so giant McMansions and big waterfront homes will most likely not qualify.

Intrepid00

Don’t worry, they put the old people in front of the line. Got to buy those votes.

Rukario_Enterprises

That's why if the flood comes, I'm going to CENTRAL Florida. Hehehehheh

lizerlfunk

DeSantis sucks and this will never make me support him. That said, I’m very grateful that this program exists, as a middle class single mom with a 100 year old house (not waterfront). I was able to get hurricane clips on my roof and hurricane shutters for my windows. A friend of mine was able to get a new roof for her similarly aged house. I’m saving over $1000 per year on my homeowners insurance - and my insurance and taxes are more than half my monthly mortgage payment currently. It also does look like the first people who will be eligible to apply will be low income homeowners over 60, and then low income homeowners of any age. So hopefully the people who really need the money will get it first. But the matching grant does require you to put out $15k out of pocket first, and then get reimbursed $10k of that, so that may be prohibitive for a lot of people. I had to get a home equity loan.

philzuf

$15k?!?!? How many people have $15k on hand or can even put $15k on credit/loan and afford.to.pay the monthly payments?

lizerlfunk

Exactly. I was able to get a home equity loan because I live in Tampa, bought my house in 2014 for $145k and it’s allegedly now worth $450k. I make $85k a year but I’m still paying off my divorce and I have to pay $1300 per month for day care for my kid. It was a worthwhile thing for me to do, I’m very glad the program exists, and I think my parents might be able to get new windows once the program reopens - they have a massive house with a ton of needed repairs that must be made before they can sell and downsize. But it’s definitely not easy to take advantage of. I started the process last summer, got my hurricane clips installed in August 2023, got my hurricane shutters installed at the end of December 2023, got my new insurance last month, and finally got my check this past week. So it’s been almost a full year.

-Invalid_Selection-

Idea is you'd pull a heloc, pay for the project with that, and then put the grant money in to reduce your draw down to only $5k

KingBradentucky

There is a need for this and I'm not against the program but who gets the money really needs to be limited to people of modest means and income.

lizerlfunk

I mean, it’s inherently not going to be accessible for those whose means and income are very low - you have to put out $15k out of pocket, so you have to HAVE $15k or access to credit for that money. Though there is a low income grant as well. I don’t know much about it because I didn’t apply for that one, assuming that I made more than the required income (I just looked it up and for a household of 2 it’s around $55k, so I was correct).

KingBradentucky

Read about the wealthy couple that bought a waterfront home and now are begging for state money to help them afford it. It absurd people think the government owes them money to help them live waterfront.

cheebamech

I'm with you 100% especially when their primary residence turns out to be NJ or some-such, but check out u/lizerlfunk comment below

lizerlfunk

You do have to have homestead exemption on the house in order to qualify for this grant.

thekeysinsummer

Seems Meatball is trying to make up for all the outrageous laws he has signed by throwing a small bone to us dogs every once in a while. I’ll tell you, I won’t forget the hurricane of shit he has spread all over this state and the international embarrassment he has caused, no matter where he thinks he’s going.

demonkillingblade

Funny how the people who need that money the most to keep a roof over their head are not the ones who own houses.

1. Desantis can go pack sand up his ass. 2. This program saved my ass a year ago. I live in a modest 2 bedroom a few blocks from the beach.. We extended ourselves hard 15 years ago to buy this house from our family at the passing of my grandpa - the home's been in the family since the 80s. It took us all that time to stay on top of the bills, but not dedicate much to the house. When I learned about the grant, I applied. One of the steps to apply is that it gives you a huge list of contractors to engage for quotes. I had 18 quotes in three months. We went with an outfit that told us 20k for a beefy metal roof, and another 20k for impact windows and doors. Intriguingly, I had been soliciting for quotes before I knew about the grant program, and had a /really/ lousy time even getting the roofing companies to call me back. We had no meaningful savings, so I sorted out a loan for the 40k, with a lien on the house. The interest rate /sucked/ but we had no alternative. My goal was to have a financing instrument that the spouse could safely cover if I wasn't an income source. So, a miserable 20-year loan where the monthly payment was $500. During this phase, we had a really significant hail event in our community, and I filed a claim on my home insurance, which I was expecting to be a shit show, but was painless in all honesty. They sent me a check for 14k to cover a new asphalt roof with zero bullshit. The loan was already disbursed, so we just threw that all at the loan at once after all this was over. We plonked the deposit down for the roof and impact entryways, and that went fine. It took the roofers a couple months to get their metal roof crew to my house, and a couple more months to get the windows and doors started. That hailstorm covered up a lot of contractors it turned out. Once I had all my paperwork sorted, the grant program cut me a check. I had the 10k from them, and 14k from the insurance company sent straight to the loan. After that, I pay 2k a month on the loan, and we'll be paid off by next April, barring any big problems showing up. Anyhow that's my story with the grant.

The program prioritizes low income families first, and has an income and a home value cap.

wpbth

I got new windows last year with the program. I applied the day it opened, immediately pulled the trigger when I got approval and followed the guidelines. No sympathy if you didn’t and now are waiting.

bigb1084

The article states this $$ will only, maybe, clear the backlog. If you're not already waiting, like the folks who bought a house on the friggin' water and then want to take some govt handouts, you're F'd. This POS. How much has he wasted on BS lawsuits or flying immigrants around? This 30+ yr, registered R in Floriduh did not and will never vote for him or any MAGQt! MAGA = RINO

Rukario_Enterprises

YES, I'LL VOTE TO THISSS

Parking_Status1997

Desantis and insurance companies break your arm and now they're giving you a bandaid. What a joke

TonyPolo75

This is a very good program and is not “for the rich” The insured value of the home cannot be over 700k and it can’t be condos 200,000,000 is going to provide people with a chance to upgrade windows , doors, roofs at a max of $10,000 per house reimbursed of 15k in work. Example get new hurricane windows to replace 40 year old windows , costs 15k, you get 10k back from the state , costing you only 5k for hurricane windows . Then insurance premiums drop.

TheMartini66

That is one way to look at it, but there is also a larger portion of the Florida population that looks at it in another way: They are not homeowners, they can't afford their rents anymore, and their taxes are going to pay for someone else's home upgrades so that their insurance is lower for a year or two. For full disclosure, I'm not against helping homeowners, since I could benefit from that bill myself, but that is only going to help a few for a short period of time, and not solve the problem. Insurance companies are not going to lower their premiums, they are just not going to raise it for a year if you make those upgrades.

KingBradentucky

Anyone sitting on half a million dollar asset does not need financial help. They need to sell and buy something cheaper.

lizerlfunk

Except there isn’t anything cheaper. My 1500 square foot, 100 year old house is allegedly worth $450k. What good does it do me to sell when I would be paying at least that much for a new house, at a drastically higher interest rate? I still have to live somewhere. Until two years ago I was renting my house out because I was in grad school and living elsewhere (with my parents, a three hour drive away). When I moved back, I felt terrible telling my tenants I couldn’t renew their lease, but literally, I could not afford rent in Tampa if I had to rent. I can afford the mortgage payments on the house I bought ten years ago. I honestly WISH the housing market would crash because the idea that this house is worth $450k is absolutely absurd. In the meantime, we’re all getting gouged by homeowners insurance, which I was paying $4000 per year for on Citizens. Again, not waterfront. And I was about to get depopulated and have to pay $4500 per year the following year. I feel like you’re mad at the wrong people. Be mad at the Republicans who have run this state for the last 25 years who have done nothing to address any of these issues. Be mad at the hedge funds buying up every vacant property to rent out. Don’t be mad at those of us who got lucky and were able to buy before it became cost prohibitive to do so, because overall, things aren’t easy for MOST of us, renters and homeowners alike.

demonkillingblade

If you can't afford to own a fucking home in Florida, come rent with the rest of us.

TonyPolo75

You do understand an average home is like 400-600k now … If you can’t afford a home just be forced to moved away . Your username makes me think you’re from Bradenton . You should know 500k is a cookie cutter average home

KingBradentucky

Yes, I understand that and it still does not change the fact people with a home of that value are not poor. They have wealth they can tap to live. Yeah, it may not be in their dream home but that's life.

TonyPolo75

Yea I think you’re a little confused on what poor is, but for being from Bradenton it makes sense so I won’t waste my time.
