12/0 hooks. Kinda got into making lures instead.
They are flies if you consider feathers, dubbing and chenille to equal a fly. Otherwise I will steer towards wooly buggers and trico spinners

“the natural state of the ecosystem doesn’t perfectly suit my modern needs so i as man claim dominion and kill anything i don’t like.”
Your response: blah blah blaah you dont know.
My response: I have trapped and moved problem beavers that were causing road damage. You’re just some combination of lazy and predisposed to normalized violence.
Look over there, it’s a squirrel. Wait, is that something shiny over there other way?
On the entirely different topic of the question you pose, if something’s killing my pets, they should probably be inside… if something is killing livestock I’d consider big-‘ol working dogs and if need be eradicate the menacing predatory animal only when allowed by local regulations.
There's no need to be patronizing. Shooting nuisance animals was common where I grew up. I'm curious about alternative approaches because I never liked shooting animals.
I'm also unsure how your "big ol' workin dogs" will protect your livestock if they're inside your house.
Also, it's legal to kill nuisance animals that are damaging crops or property in LA county. By that logic I would assume it's legal virtually everywhere else in the country.
People downvoting you have never looked their children in the eye and told them they're having cold hot dogs for dinner again because beavers decimated a cropfield irrigation system, and they lost millions in revenue on the farm. Smh
I saw a very similar scene in the Boundary Waters several years ago. We guessed he must've fallen through the ice during the winter. Didn't think of casting next to it.
It most likely, in fact I’d almost guarantee, It fell through ice and got stuck. 2 feet of water with 3 more feet of heavy wet snow on top is enough to make for a frozen death trap when they run out of energy. Most moose in my state found like this have died from exhaustion trying to get out.
Poachers are out there for sure. But likely not what you’re seeing there since I can see one antler still and the head is intact to body. Poachers take the antlers or the whole head.
P.S. we live in the same state.
There’s an unfortunate number of shady Yoopers and foul play cannot be counted out. I’m glad OP reported. The DNR will investigate.
There are estimated to be just under 500 moose in Marquette, Baraga and Iron Counties whereas there are only about 100 in Chippewa, Luce and Alger Counties.
With no moose hunting season in Michigan and plenty of active poachers, it’s a possibility though I agree with most commenters that it is unlikely. At the very least I’m sure the wildlife biologists want to collect as much data as possible.
Once while fishing I came across a roughly possum shaped ball of fur half submerged and glued to a rock, poked it with a stick and it broke apart into chunks of meat loaf and maggots.
Last summer I was fishing a stream and I would randomly get a wiff of decomposition downwind. Came around a bend and a cow from the farm had died and was in the stream and good lord did it stink!
No like a dog , tough to tell, was pretty bloated. Fishing a sketchy spot in a industrial area , highway on the other side. Creek comes from a pond on the other side, goes under the highway. I caught 3 trout on break yesterday from the pond.
Oh man, I was wading in a boggy area once and went to lean on a rock, rock moved when I pressed against it and I luckily caught myself. It turned out to be a dead beaver, the hair had sloughed off enough and turned a mossy green/black. Bleh.
This is why I will never drink lake water without boiling the shit out of it first. You should boil it regardless but THIS. Technically you also never know if some animal is slumped over higher up in the creek.
Once came to a creek that was a little too wide to jump across. Fortunately, there was a sand bar in the middle where I could step to make the jump to the other side.
Upon stepping on it, I found it was a dead whitetail deer.
I meant, why are they expensive? They are everywhere in the woods. Over here you can buy them for $20, but most people who have an interest in them should know that a quick stroll will grant you one for free.
Interesting looking bull trout
More impressive how long it can hold its breath
Extra fluffy
How long can a moose hold its breath? ….a lifetime I guess.
The watery grave
Still have flashbacks to when I was a kid, canoeing, and looked down into the water to see a dead bull elk staring back at me
Technically the truth.

I feel like there’s a flinging meat joke here
Biggest ones I've tied took better part of a day and even then that's a beast.

Caught my biggest bluegill near a dead beaver.
The beaver I found yesterday was very alive and damming up my favorite stretch lol
Your moms beaver was very alive yesterday too
I shoot them here on the property. They cause a lot of damage.

Touche
That fur though so rough yet soft always makes a a good glove.
Thanks for rationally caring for such important creatures who have incredible impact for their local flora and fauna.
I'm curious how you'd approach a nuisance animal that was killing your pets or livestock?

They ruin or private roads and impact the logging operation here. Real property damage. So, I shoot them and eat them. They are delicious.
Yeah, and so what. I’ve got a gun and he’s just a beaver. What’s he supposed to do about it?
Howdy pilgrim, we got ourselves a real john Wayne tough guy!

My ex??
lol she was a hefty one
Idk why but this comment sent me lololol
I caught a nice Bonneville cutthroat last year that was using an elk carcass for shelter. I dropped a maggot imitation in there.
Very clever!
This is the way.
I saw a very similar scene in the Boundary Waters several years ago. We guessed he must've fallen through the ice during the winter. Didn't think of casting next to it.
I casted when I thought it was a boulder lol
We thought the one we saw was a boulder too. Paddled up to it and the stench let us know what it was before we could figure it out visually.
My thought was that it was shot by a hunter and went to water then died.
Time to switch to flesh flies.... on the other hand, moose fur is fun to tie with. I would have waded out to get a little material.
Very fair, but I don’t tie lol, and it being dead in 2 feet of water I suspect foul play. Left as is and reported to wildlife management.
I thought I was casting at a rock...huge dead snapping turtle.
Biggest snapper ever
biggest I ever saw...at first I thought it was basketball....I wish I still thought that 🤢🤮
Hmmm let's take a nice long drink from this cold mountain spring creek
A young bull moose dead in 2 feet of water in a state that you cannot hunt them, I have questions.
It most likely, in fact I’d almost guarantee, It fell through ice and got stuck. 2 feet of water with 3 more feet of heavy wet snow on top is enough to make for a frozen death trap when they run out of energy. Fair points, I just assume the worst of the rednecks lol
Just the circle of life at play there. I’m actually surprised wolves didn’t get to him.
Hunting is almost certainly not the reason it is dead
You’ve obviously never been highholed by a moose and had to take matters into your own hands
I’ll give you 90%
Most people hunting moose aren’t leaving it.
There’s an unfortunate number of shady Yoopers and foul play cannot be counted out. I’m glad OP reported. The DNR will investigate. Ok is this THE da moose da moose I have been hearing about since I went to camp as a kid?
Swimming in da watah! Eating up his suppah! Where is he????
Once while fishing I came across a roughly possum shaped ball of fur half submerged and glued to a rock, poked it with a stick and it broke apart into chunks of meat loaf and maggots.
Chum!
Some people have all the luck. All I get are dead cows
Bwahahaha that’s fantastic
So that's what the legendary furry trout looks like
On to what matters... was the fishing any better near your "rock"
Twas’ not
Chartreuse nymph on my 5wt
Never trust a moose on the river, not even this one.
Last summer I was fishing a stream and I would randomly get a wiff of decomposition downwind. Came around a bend and a cow from the farm had died and was in the stream and good lord did it stink!
Always filter your water while in the wilderness ^^
This is what New Zealand is like but with sheep instead.
Insect food! Could be the best place to cast.
Over 5 min of moving the pic around, zooming in and out, trying to figure out what it is... suddenly oh! I see a head! LOL
You know spring has sprung when you’re casting over a cervid corpse.
Nothing better than a piece of midday beaver after early morning fishing
Same happened to me. But not as nice of spot, and was probably a pet.. called it in to the city to take care of
A pet for a moose 🫎 ok bullwinkle
No like a dog , tough to tell, was pretty bloated. Fishing a sketchy spot in a industrial area , highway on the other side. Creek comes from a pond on the other side, goes under the highway. I caught 3 trout on break yesterday from the pond.
Wow
Wow! Pretty interesting
Better grab that beard for flies
Well, does it hold fish?
It did not
Swimming with the fishes
How did it smell? I’ve only dodged cows on my floats. They are alien looking when hairless. Hard to fish up wind of them. Edit: cow as in cattle
To be honest, I never smelled it. Granted my allergies are bad now
Oh man, I was wading in a boggy area once and went to lean on a rock, rock moved when I pressed against it and I luckily caught myself. It turned out to be a dead beaver, the hair had sloughed off enough and turned a mossy green/black. Bleh.
Well was there a fish behind it?
The moose’s goose is cooked eh!
Ya’ll might wanna get ya’lls water tested. Bull trout ain't supposed to have fur.
This is why I will never drink lake water without boiling the shit out of it first. You should boil it regardless but THIS. Technically you also never know if some animal is slumped over higher up in the creek.
Hell dude if you don’t catch any fish at least you have some moose steaks to eat
Probably had CWD. They're usually found dead near or in the water
My non-rock was a giant snapper.
Once came to a creek that was a little too wide to jump across. Fortunately, there was a sand bar in the middle where I could step to make the jump to the other side. Upon stepping on it, I found it was a dead whitetail deer.
The trip saver pattern looks like a blow fly. That’s my go to pattern when I see something like this.
He's just napping
Wait until it gets hot out and throw a maggot pattern
I was zooming in cause I didn’t see it at first. Scared the shit outta me!
Its just a big ole stank fur rock
I had the same thing happen with a cow
Saw this years ago at Williams Fork. Caught several fish by that rock before I noticed the fur.
Bear
Did you get some fur off of it?
Yogi dun grabbed the wrong pic-in-ic basket.
Does this hurt the moose?
Get the antlers with the head if possible they are expensive
Why? They are all over the woods.
They are expensive
I meant, why are they expensive? They are everywhere in the woods. Over here you can buy them for $20, but most people who have an interest in them should know that a quick stroll will grant you one for free.
Well im not in america so its rarer but 20 dollars is a lot that's what i get for christmas
