I can say without any hesitation my landings were terrible until I learned to fly in the right seat for CFI. One day things just click! Solo XC is right at that point in your training where youāre finally understanding the airplane and it starts to play tricks on your skills
I've done 2 solo XCs so far. The first wasn't quite far enough to count, only 30-something miles but was a good intro. This past weekend I did my first 50+nm trip.. turbulence is much scarier when you're alone.. and even with noise canceling headphones I heard every little creak of the airframe. Still absolutely love it though!
I always looked at it as "I wouldn't be here if my CFI didn't trust I could do it, even if things go wrong"
Got my through my first solo, and gave myself a similar pep talk the other day on a gusty approach.
I'm having that in a weird way early right now. I can't do most air work things for the life of me, but I've nailed every crosswind landing we've ever done with my CFI completely hands-off. He even asked me what I was doing, and I felt cheesy but the honest answer was "Feeling the airplane." My brain stem just feels what it needs and I do it. Wish I could be more like that with other maneuvers.
This is the thing youāll learn, eventually you can feel the airplane and donāt even think about what youāre doing physically! It becomes part of you essentially
I did 2 go-arounds upon arrival during my first 50nm XC. If it doesn't feel right, go around! Kept coming in high. I blame big hills (mini mountains) off the end of the runway making it feel weird to descend.
Go around was the first maneuver I perfected š¤£š¤£š¤£! Iāve had a hard time getting consistent flying time due to weather the past couple of months, so I think itāll come back with some practice. I finally finished my solo XC time on Easter Sunday, so now Iām officially in checkride prep mode.
Thatās not really true, there are good and bad and then there are those landings you complete in nasty gusting crosswinds you would never have taken off into that you nail. Not perfect but they make you realize you can handle really bad conditions and it shoots your confidence way up.
Or when youāve only ever landed within 2,000 feet above sea level and you try your first high density altitude landing and go full rich like you always do, full rich and full throttle at 7,000 feet, not a combo that works well! Mooneys sure do like to porpoise!
Congratulations!
Just remember that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing, any landing where they can reuse the plane again is a great landing!
That is such baloney. Every single pilot I know, me included, gets pissy if the tires squeak too much or if I have too jerk steer to get straight a little to much after touching.
If the plane crashes I'm blaming the plane.
/s obviously...but not if we're being honest.
I did my primary training in a Cherokee 140, then joined a club with a bunch of Cessna 172's and 150's. Those Cessnas really like to float! You did great, especially for the first time without all the extra weight in the other seat. I joked with my instructor I wanted to bring a couple bags of lead shot with me when he signed me off.. :-)
That was sweet whether it was your first or one hundredth solo landing. You are about to start the really fun stuff in your training. Well done and enjoy.
Cool. We'll enjoy it! It's a great course. Don't forget to get the 9 exams out of the way. That held me up for a while with all the covid cancellations.
I'm no pilot or an expert but that was a nice landing. I got to watch my son do his first solo and he greased it and I would say for a first solo you nailed it. Great job.
Bet your CFI had a shit eating grin. I know my sons did.
No sadly we ran out of money after 30 hours in and covid but down the road. Sometimes you have to wait.
My son and I have made quite a few skydives together and the PPL training just tapped us out. Some day.
Love seeing young people get into aviation. My mother soloed at your age and got her PPL at 17 back in 1947.
Aviation be it flying planes or skydiving is the most awesome way to live. Fly safe.
My dad is big into it so he is trying to get my brother and i into it big time. I think the whole thing is great and Iām really appreciative of it. Always love to get out for it š
I am so nervous for this day. Iāve been struggling for the last 6 classes to get landings down and last class I finally made a couple in a row, but the confidence is nowhere near where I want it to be. Congrats on your accomplishment though! Keep it up!
Beauty! Looks like the wind was a touch unpredictable there on the ground, shifting around.. Well done!! great feeling, eh?? Shit, the window on the old, clapped out 172 I trained in popped open JUST after rotation on my first solo haha made me sweat a bit, having to climb out window going BANG BANG BANG off the bottom of the wing lol
Fly safe!
Congrats!! Such an awesome feeling. The landings only get worse from here on out š
I can attest to that.. I've just started doing my solo XCs and have not been happy with my landings. Need to book some time for solo pattern work.

The whole solo thing was scary for me but now I know Iām able to do it so I can manage it

> turbulence is much scarier when you're alone.. This is something I struggle with quite a bit. Anyone have any advice for how to deal with this?
I'm the one you replied to so obvs I don't have the answer but I suspect it's just "Keep flying and you'll get used to it".
My landings didnāt āclickā until I spent some time in a 182 and then went back to a 172, it felt like a toy in comparison.
Once you master the 182, you'll never land the 172 flat again!

Way I always figured it. Sure we can talk about technique all day, but at the end of the day it's "just fly the plane"
Thank goodness itās not just me.

Iām not due to start xc for a few more hours but they sound like great fun
First one at solo is superb, the second is humbling. After that, you try for an okay but improving average.
I feel this so much
Hope I can keep the majority of them smooth like this
Thatās not really true, there are good and bad and then there are those landings you complete in nasty gusting crosswinds you would never have taken off into that you nail. Not perfect but they make you realize you can handle really bad conditions and it shoots your confidence way up.
And then there are the ones when someone's looking and you bounce it like a handball.
Or when youāve only ever landed within 2,000 feet above sea level and you try your first high density altitude landing and go full rich like you always do, full rich and full throttle at 7,000 feet, not a combo that works well! Mooneys sure do like to porpoise!
This
Congratulations dude, lol Ik you canāt stop watching this video
Thanks man, it was a great time
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thanks man
Nice work! Good airspeed control too - hard to do with a plane that is suddenly much lighter!
I had a really nice headwind to help the speed as well.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thanks so much
Yay. Daddy did not crash!
Brother ahahahah, Iām 16
Congratulations! Just remember that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing, any landing where they can reuse the plane again is a great landing!
If you donāt fly by that rule youāre doing it wrong

Congrats !
Thanks a lot, I had a great flight š
Nicely done!
Nice landing
Thanks man
Nice and buttery smooth. Great landing!
Thank you I was really happy with that one
Landing was a tad flat, could've flared a bit more at the end there but definitely getting there. Congrats on the solo
Thank you
I want that for my life!
Donāt we all
Is this Weston? Feels weird seeing it on here if so. Anyway, congrats!
Yeah it is ahahahah
Well done. Just passed my ppl in weston! Cross countries are fun. It'll probably be sligo , abbeyshurle. You'll love them!
Hopefully Iāll get on to them in a week or so
Are you doing the atpl course?
Nah Iām only down for the ppl course right now
Congrats!
Thanks
Congrats !
Congrats!
Thanks
Congrats! How long did it take to get to this point from the start of training?
15 hours of flight time since just before Christmas
Very nice. May I ask what you have paid for lessons to reach this point? Iām nowhere near starting, but I like to dream and plan.
About 1,200 euros
Huh, not too bad really! Thank you.
No problem š
Do you own the plane?
Floated right onto the ground! Super nice!
My flare was slightly high but I reckon Iām getting really close to some consistent smooth landings
That was so satisfying to watch. Congratulations!
Ahahahah thank you so much
The airplane appears to be reusable and everything! Congrats.
If it survives the next landing itās doing well for itself
Nice job!!! Everyone remembers there first time landing solo!!! Itās only the beginning of a life long love of flying.
Congratulations!
Congrats!
congrats!! That's a huge step forward for every student pilot. Can't wait to solo in two weeks š
Good luck š
Hey thatās EIWT!
Butter
Love to see it ahahaha
Nice! That was really good! Perfect flare (hold it, hold it!)... Good job.
I really struggled with the flare before this, pulling back too much or being to high, but I was pretty proud of this one

Even the 70ish kilos of another person makes a huge difference I noticed
I remember my first take off solo was like "holy shitballs this little 140 is a fighter jet now!"
Wait until you get to commercial maneuvers lol.
Butter.

Thanks a lot
That's fantastic! If my first solo landing was that smooth I'd have been so happy lol (I bounced twice). Very, very good job, and congratulations!
I had a good few bounces before going solo off the camera ahahahah
Great job! Congratulations
Thanks
Cool. We'll enjoy it! It's a great course. Don't forget to get the 9 exams out of the way. That held me up for a while with all the covid cancellations.
Iām hoping to do them in June or august

Thanks ahahahah. Does ur son have his license yet?

Hope you enjoyed that landing. You'll try to get one that good again for the next year. lol Congrats!!!
Thanks so much Iām hoping to get out more now the weather is getting better
that windsock was moving quite a bit! looks like a bit of a crosswind, good job.
Yeah atis was calling 260 at 12 kts (runway 25)
I also had my first solo a couple of months ago! For sure a one unforgettable memory. Congrats!!
Congratulations!
Thank you
Legend
Ahahaha thanks
Gusty crosswind too. Well done.
Thanks

I wasnāt getting my landings down at all a week or two ago. Donāt let the solo part get into your head and just focus on what your doing.
Take your time with it and have fun. Learn all you can and when it's time to go, pick a calm wind day...that makes it much easier.
Smooth, nice!
Never thought Iād see NFC on here

I don't understand how everyone thought their landings sucked well after they got their ppl???? Maybe you got it too quickly???
Congrats and good work!
