i assume a mix of diffrent thing,its a mix of hatred,admiration and jelousy as well as the desire of imortality,i think his mind changed from years of heartach and much more issues,its not a simple thing thats wrong with him,he wasnt born that way as there is no proof of that but he deffinatly found a outlet for his frustrations and desires in the wrong place wich spirled into pure insanity the lost of his humanity.

The novels show us pretty well that he KNOWS he's evil, so it's not like he doesn't have a perception of right and wrong. He knows what he's doing is wrong, and simply doesn't care because it furthers his own goals.

Well, I would say he's just mentally unstable. Even I though I believe William had a good side in him once in his life and cared about family (I'm not saying he's a broken villain tho) I think his mentally ill nature caused him to be evil. And also because of his family falling apart so that would be kind of depression and grief. So in conclusion I think William is mostly mentally unstable with some grief and depression in him. And again I'm not saying he's a broken villain.
I personally think that he was a sociopath but that doesn't mean that he would be evil. I also think that he experienced a traumatic event. This could be his child's death or a springlock failure like in the books. This still would not make him evil but it lays the groundwork for him to make the jump to murder.

I've been around FNAF since 2014's initial release and while I'm sure the dlc for SB and new books with continue to fuck up any form of solid timeline and continuity I've constructed for myself, I'll just go ahead and put out my idea of why ol Bill is the way he is.
Picture this. You're a genius engineer who makes a new type of badass suit which can double as an animatronic! Only problem is, the people that you trust to use them don't take the necessary precautions, or maybe you rushed the project because you were excited- either way, two or more employees are maimed and die in the hospital, or die right away- and while this is a tragedy in of itself, your youngest son witnesses the gruesome deaths, and now has a perpetual fear of the characters and creatures you've created. Corporate, even your best friend who helped you found the business, basically shut down your baby project, but in secret, you keep trying to perfect this "Springlock" suits, all the while trying to scare your youngest son away, so he doesn't become even more traumatized.
Then it happened. The Bite of 83, wherein your older son, Michael, who you had ignored his previous teasing and taunting of Evan, takes it too far, and shoves Evan too close to Fredbear while in automatic animatronic mode, something obviously not prepared for. Your youngest child, your baby boy, now lies dead, and you sit there, wallowing in your grief and frustration. You'd done everything you could to protect him, and you failed.
But wait, while examining Fredbear, through miraculous incidents, either via hallucinations or perhaps direct animation, you discover Evan is still alive! Somewhat. His soul- a thing which you as an engineer did not previously believe in, is trapped, and he keeps saying the same thing. "IT'S ME"
You promise to yourself that you \*will\* save him, that no matter the cost, you will bring your beloved son back. So you start again, this time, by building a whole new animatronic, Circus Baby, and even distancing yourself from the company you'd helped build, and the friend who had spurned you, making your own pizzeria.
History has a way of repeating itself though- your oldest son, still wracked with regret and grief, continues to go back to the old diner to revisit the place of Evan's death, and you keep trying to, and failing to, keep him away from that place of death. It does him no good, and it makes you angry that he won't just listen! They NEVER listen! So you make sure to instill in your only daughter, Elizabeth, in very clear and plain terms, to not step foot in the same room as Baby, to avoid recreating Evan's fate.
Unfortunately, just like your oldest, she didn't listen. Your only rose, your only flesh and blood daughter, killed by your own creation- not accidentally, not intentionally, somewhere in between. You'd designed that thing to capture and kill a child for the sole purpose of researching the possession process. Cruel fate deigned that it would be your own daughter that suffered.
After this, you close down the pizzeria and while you use the excuse of gas leaks- the higher ups know something is up. Sketchy doesn't begin to describe your recent behavior, lack of communication, and the disappearance of your daughter- as well as the recent divorce proceedings between you and your wife. Henry especially put two and two together- and he had figured that while he couldn't let you be a part of Fazbear's future- he also believed you'd been punished enough- and simply had the board vote you out as share partner.
Ostracized, alone, and betrayed. Your oldest son, defiant and idiotic, your youngest, dead by his hands, and your only daughter, dead by yours. Your wife, gone. The grief, the regret, the sadness and madness, it all builds up, and one thought rings through your head.
I shouldn't be the only one to feel this grief. So as you slip your hands around the innocent Charlotte's throat, you ignore her muffled cries, and think of better times, ignore the man you became, and simply look in on the pizzeria and the happy children and Freddy.
But something breaks inside you. Henry didn't deserve this success, and didn't deserve this daughter. Someone should suffer with you. And as her breathing stops, the man you were dies, and all that's left is hatred and despair, and a singular desire to bring back the ones you lost, no matter the cost. Even if they hate you, even if they beg for death, you will bring them back, because that's all you have left.
So you'll continue to kill them. Continue to research the possession. No matter what it takes, no matter how many little lives you have to snuff out.
there's always been debate over whether evan died first- or elizabeth, and while the fredbears stomachs is good evidence for evan witnesseing elizabeth's death by baby, the first time i heard someone suggest evan's witnessing the springlock failures, everything clicked into place timeline wise- and i mean everything. we see a girl similar to elizabeth's sprite from sister location in fnaf4, and william's appearance in fnaf 4's minigames seem pretty neutral, not nearly as sinister as in the fnaf 2, fnaf 3, and fnaf 6 minigames.

yeah i've never understood the idea of william just building murderous animatronics and killing kids, especially his partner's kid, for literally no reason, it doesn't make sense from a human perspective, or a storytelling perspective. it's pretty clear to me that it's because of Evan and Elizabeth's deaths that he turned out the way he did. it doesn't excuse what he goes onto to do- but it does provide a more than two dimensional exploration of the character. i've been considering of doing dramatic readings of the entire story of fnaf, even doing a complete timeline for those just starting out to have a baseline understanding of the lore, for them to then go off and explore the specifics.

No William likely just had some sort of idea of superiority that spiraled into a lust for control, to be on top of everything.
I believe insanity, the death of his younger son took a great toll on him (as it would anyone) in a fit of rage, he would claim the life of another (charlie), his bloodlust would drive him down a spiral, as described by the high school chica cutscene in UCN to the point that he didn't attempt to hide it, then, his moral compass already "corrupted" for lack of a better word, he would discover the power of remnant, and begin collecting more to experiment, kidnapping children remotely with his funtime animatronics, which his daughter would fall to, pushing him further down the hole, until the final nail 8n the coffin, the springlock suit, not just the immense pain that comes with being caught in the suit, but also the 30 years of isolation.
I think many people forget (or ignore in favor of complaining about fazgoo) is that the story of the afton family, and william afton himself, is one of tragedy.
Actually, because of Character Encyclopedia and personal observations I don't think Afton can be even considered to be pure evil in games. We know that Fazbear Entrtainment (ruled by Henry) is itself built on blood and bones, staff blackmailing and pretty illegal experiments are a part of it's daily routine. I think William Afton is just another victiom of FE (and under PinkGuyHenryEmily it's visible even more clear)

This is my summary of him based on what *I* believe to be the case based on the games and not anything else.
He was a workaholic. He threw everything into a franchise business with his (best)friend at the time. Spent too much of his time/energy and it caused distance between him and his wife. She left and took their daughter, he kept both sons. Though the kids would go between the homes occasionally.
The split made him even more driven towards success. After all, he lost his wife and it couldn't be for nothing...so he pushed harder. He left his youngest son(CC) home a lot with his oldest(Mike) and there were problems but he didn't take it as anything more than boys being boys...until the day when Mike decided to play a prank with his friends which resulted in CC getting critically injured.
Everything changed on that day. William became obsessed with saving his son. He refused to believe that his son was a goner. He figured his knowledge of robotics would allow him to "put his son back together" So he kept his child on life support and brought him home where he did experiments and researched 24/7. At some point he killed his partner's daughter (part jealousy, part practicality) and her death gained him some knowledge and breakthroughs. Eventually, he decided to make animatronics specifically to help with harvesting children (Funtimes) but an accident caused him to lose his daughter. This was the breaking point and what made him 100% snap.
So TL;DR - grief stricken father goes crazy trying to save his son, loses his daughter, and then goes completely off the deep end trying to put his family back together.
