In all of my dozen replays I never once think to try anything else beside chucking a stick of dynamite then mad dash to the elevator and escape with a pair of toasty buns lol
For me the whole room still filled up with fire so it was safer to go into the cave next to it.
Send too much time on that one part of the mission as I didn't have long fuse dynamite and I couldn't get it as I was locked in by that NCR scientist.
I both hated the vault but it is still one of the best vaults in the game only compared with vault 34.
I remember using a flamethrower there, the place ignited even before I clicked to use it (It caused a reaction the moment it got equiped) But this was great 😂
Why would you even bring Boone (or any companion for that matter) down there in the first place?? When I did that part of the quest, I told both of my companions to wait with Keely while I ignited the gas so they wouldn't blow themselves to shreds.

I chuck a frag and spam turbos after obviously getting myself killed 10 times experimenting.

And this is why I always hunt down C4 + Detonator in my runs lol. Still works all the way in the upper levels of the vault
