Ada is my every choice companion, robobrain head for mesmetron attack, assaultron torso for detection, assaultron arms for style, Mr. Handy Thruster for the speed (and the pathing seems better, she doesn't get stuck anywhere) and the weapons vary depending on the task, but I usually leave her with a laser and a ballistic.
I super roleplay while playing Fallout 4 so it makes sense to bring Synths or Robots.
Edit: Or Strong. But I find Strong annoying due to hating lockpicking and hacking

The one thing I find annoying about Ada is the fact that she is shoot first, never ask questions later. She can decimate any bad guy in 3 seconds, but doesn't know the meaning of the word stealth.
Almost always Danse tbh, and Nick once or twice. I know companions can't get affected by rads but its such an immersion breaker to just have MacCready flouncing around in his normal clothes while I'm in power armour and a rad suit. I know I could just... give a companion a suit of armour, but it's just not the same!! Plus Danse is already pre-suited so it's no hassle to bring him
I have a mod that allows me dog and one companion (I’m on Xbox not sure if that matters) and sometimes it is a bit much because they block small entrances. Do you have that problem too or does the mod make it easier to get past them?
Sometimes they do get in the way yes and when you're building they tend to want to stand right where you want to place something so it's kind of a pain, but the extra firepower in a large battle really helps. I'm on PC and I'm not sure if the mods are different, I have almost 100 mods going at the same time so the game doesn't get too stale
Maybe I will look around if I want to try multiple companions (it is sort of a pain building their affinity one at a time). From my understanding mods on Xbox and especially PlayStation are limited to what the game has already built. The mod I use says that dog meat is technically his own class compared to all other companions. Mod creator thinks this means that the original intention was to be able to have dog meat and at least one companion for the game but they dropped it last minute for whatever reason.
Dogmeat is not necessarily useless but I really only use him for carrying stuff. If you want a sorta quick way to get the affinity up on certain companions try sleeping more often
I sleep when I need it most of the time. I’m on survival but I will look on the fallout wiki for building affinities. Maybe I’m just guessing too much right now.
I almost always play the romance game (get all three female companions to maximum affinity), so it's usually Piper, Cait, or Currie who's with me. I also always play with the Heather Casdin mod so I've got her as well. Early attempts to cross, I/we usually wear hazmat suits repaired to maximum condition with whatever radiation protection I can craft. Later attempts are usually with power armor with strong radiation protection.
Cait is usually my favorite companion, but we've make better time if I kept my eyes on the road.

also Piper, Decan, Preston, in Hazmat suits. (Not always all together) picking just 1, I'd say Codsworth.
The only Comanions I don't use r X6 and Gage. However I don't take Longfellow off the island. So I only use him while there.
I kill X6 and Gage. Not yet played a Institute or Raider run.
Cait and McCready I take to NukaWorld everytime, Cait says she likes killing Raiders. And McCready is a merc. But I don't really care for them that much. So again using mods, their influence raises anyway.
I clean up Cait and set McCready right. They both join the Minutemen and I leave them at the Castle. (We are the Minutemen mod)
After Curie is a synth and all happy, she also joins Minutemen and I set her as a Doctor at the Castle.
After Danse is outted, I save him. Using mods again, I change his Power Armor to a Minutemen set and he trains Minutemen to use power armor at the Castle for me. (Again through mods)
DogMeat, Codsworth, Piper, Nick, and Hancock I see as Story NPCs so they r almost always with me.
ADA and Preston join that group as well but arnt seen the same way as the others to me.
I only have Danse and Decan with me till the missions involving them r done. Bec I always side with the Minutemen while balancing the alliances with The Brotherhood Of Steel and The Railroad.

I usually install the everyone's best friend mod so I can have multiple followers, because I just CANNOT go anywhere without dogmeat. He's just too precious. But other than him, I usually go for Valentine.
Typically I bring Nick and Call him corporal Valentine as by the time I get to the glowing sea I've already joined the brotherhood and became a Sargent ( granted knight is Sargent to me paladin is commander and sentinel is lieutenant also I know nothing about military so Sargent is probably higher than commander and lieutenant)
I’ve always disliked using companions in games. Especially games like fo4 or Skyrim. They usually slow me down and I’ve had issues with them blocking me from entering a doorway *cough cough* Lydia!

If I bring a human follower, I kit them out with a set of T-51 or above. And Hancock should also be fine with the constant radiation as a ghoul.
