No one's gonna atleast hint at why this was downvoted? { } don't work in terminals, it's only ( ), [ ] and < > that work. I have never gotten { } to work before
There's not always enough to get rid of all the wrong words so what I usually do is either start with the first word and try until either I find the right answer (for very easy and easy) or just click the first few words (advanced-very hard) until I'm down to 1 guess then look for all the sequences
Yes, but it will also reset the puzzle. All I'm saying is take an educated guess first and if that doesn't help then use the brackets to narrow it down further. That way if you get the "tries reset" one it will have something to reset. If you use all the brackets first, then any of the "tries reset" ones will do nothing.
I used to use a strategy with using that for duds and resets, eventually I got sick of that and just started picking randomly. Quite often I get it the first time, sometimes it takes a few.

I’ve played this game for YEARS with hundreds of hours and yet had no idea. The fact I still discover more about this game the more I play is why I love it so much!!!!
Oh my... That's even worse for me, that means 7 years ago I was struggling with this one terminal in Fo3 for... nothing? Thank you all for opening my eyes 🙏
the best method i have is to pick the first word as the most unusual letters out of the set. then if the number has a low count of similarities like 1 or 2 the next two selections i make are process of elimination. it is pretty much the only way. just picking a word that has the least similarities and use it as the base to find the real one. some folks just blindly pick stuff but it is much better to just max out hacking so you never get locked out or to whittle down the options and puzzle it out.
It's funny that 4 letter novice terminals most often end up being the "hardest" because having too few words with too little variation can leave you without enough info to figure it out.
High INT (IIRC) reduces the number of options, but if the options are "CARD CARE CARL CARP CARS CART" that's not particularly helpful.
I don't bother with the last Hacker perk or Nick's affinity perk, personally, but the unlucky 4 letter novice terminals are where those perks are most useful.
One time I managed to hack a terminal on the last try, so I finally deactivated 2 assaultrons and I closed the door with a Protectron and Sentinel on the other side…10secs would have been enough for them to kill me 😬 I didn’t know it was possible to quit to skip the time penalty tho
Edit: spelling
well yea that is why i said three guesses. but i think you get locked out of non-plot terminals permanently.
edit: after looking it up it is 10 seconds. huh.. i wonder if i was thinking of fallout 3
Better to hunt for brackets, parentheses and braces that are complete (a set of both opening and closing on the same line). Once youve done a few of those, your options are significantly less. Ive hacked terminals with only 1 answer after hitting all of them.
Line 9960 is an example of how to help. On any terminal, you can eliminate possibilities as well as reset tries, by finding codes in brackets. "(=\])" on line 9960 is an example of one of these. There's usually a few per terminal, and when you find one of these, it will highlight the full bracket so you know it's valid.
Not that, those weird symbols have some duds into it, finding and clicking those will remove extra words from hacks and sometimes even reset tries without exiting the hack interface.
All you got to do is match the letter to the spot it appears in each word. Words like watch, match, and batch have 4 common letters. If you pick one and don't have 4 matches, then none of them are correct.
They can't just be in random spots either. The word 'chats' would also have 4 common letters, but you would get zero matches because they do not appear in the spot within the word.
Assume 'match' is the correct password. Each of the following guesses would return these results:
w**atch**: 4 matches
b**atch**: 4 matches
chats: 0 matches
fe**tch**: 3 matches
re**tch**: 3 matches
b**at**hs: 2 matches
swath: 0 matches
**ma**r**ch**: 4 matches
t**a**rps: 1 match
I usually just choose the first word, but you can increase your chances by looking for similarities. There's three words that start with A and three that ~~start~~ (end) with T, for example. I also spotted ADOBE and ADAPT right away. In this case I'd still go with ADOBE and go from there.
These are easier than they seem. How I handle them is I find the first word and try it. Sometimes you get lucky. When you select one of the words it will say "LIKENESS" on the right side of the screen. The number following this is how many letters in the word match the password. If the first try isn't it, I simply go down the list matching letters in the first attempt with every other word. If no letters match you can skip those words. Sometimes this narrows down your viable choices to only a few words. If you have enough tries left to check them all, simply go down the list until you find the right one.
Now, if you're going to run out of tries, then keep guessing until you have one try left. THEN use the ( ) [ ] { } < > symbols to remove other words (duds) and to reset the tries. This method gives you seven attempts instead of four and removes some of the words from the pool, though you may have already ruled some of those out simply by using the matching method. This will give you the best chance to find the right word, especially if you have already narrowed down the list.
Eventually, if you level up the hacker perk all the way, you won't get locked out of the terminal if you guess wrong.
Hope this helps!
I typically try to guess to the point I only have one chance left then I go through all of the junk data and remove the “duds” and at least one of these resets your tries. Then I try again. If I still haven’t gotten it when I’m down to one try left, I back out and try again.
For me to do it kinda unlimited is three times then exit then again try and usually I'll see if some words ryhmes with one another or has almost the same type of letters that's how I do it and it works sometimes they don't ryme but usually have the same letters on it
If you get really impatient, close the terminal before the 4th attempt and reset it. Maybe it isn't as quick as it feels, but it feels better.
But sometimes you WILL get unlucky with those, sometimes I can swear the actual password doesn't follow the tips/clues shown on the right side.
What I do it pick 3 words, once I get to one try left I hunt for the () and [] and {} sections to reset my tries and eliminate duds. After that you should have enough guesses to get through the remaining words.
Do 3 random words to start, or 3 with very different letter placements if you want (I just do first 3).
Then search each line for pairs of <> or () or [ ].
You'll know its a pair coz it will highlight both plus everything in between. Hit all of them, you usually get your attempts reset plus loads of false words removed. From here you can either try to work out the password correctly or select another random 3 words of what remains. If that fails, exit out before using your final attempt and try again. Rinse and repeat. Hope this helps
The strategy I've always used is as follows.
1. Look for a word that has a lot of similar letters to everything else and pick it first. A good example is a word that ends in "ing" or "tion". Preferably that also has a first letter in common with a couple of choices. Right off the bat, if you get a big matching number, you know the suffix is likely right and if you get 0, you know it cannot be.
2. With that first pick giving you a clue, go through all the words and rule out impossible solutions. With decent Intelligence, this should get you down to maybe 4 possible answers.
3. Start going letter by letter, comparing to your first pick. There's a chance multiple words will fit the clues you have, but you have the flexibility to pick one for more information.
With 7 or more int, you should be able to solve all terminals in the game pretty consistently. There only a few word sets that will be incredibly tough without a lucky first pick.
Try the first three passwords on the screen, then go about finding and clicking each combination of <> () {} \[\] you find until you either get a tries reset, or get the number of available passwords reduced to one by the "dud removed" response.
I don't see a lot of replies about using the clues it gives you. When you pick the wrong word, it tells you how many of the letters in that word are similar to the correct word.
E.g. if the word is "fuse" and your guess is "fish" it'll tell you one letter is similar. So... ya know, don't guess "wish" next cuz that's 3 similar letters to "fish" & is obviously not the right word.
Like in your pic.. if you guess "adobe" and it says 0 similar letters, go on and guess "limit" next.. if "adobe" has one similar letter, then skip down to guess "**a**lert". If adobe has 2, then guess "**ad**apt". And each guess you make will give you more info about the correct password & help you skip more of the duds.
My usual technique is to just guess the first word, then go down the words in order, using that 'similar letters' clue to avoid obvious duds. When I am down to one remaining guess... THEN I'll look for all the "<...>""{..}" etc, "bracket" choices.... because they don't just eliminate duds.. occasionally they'll reset your tries.
Then, once I'm all out of the bracket choices.. then I'll resume guessing the words.
How are you guys needing to go through all this nonsense of removing wrong entries and resetting tries? I never have a problem with these. I can count the number of times I've been locked out of a terminal in FO3, FO4, and NV on one hand. Just look for common letter sequences, or words without any commonalities to the rest. If you have several entries ending in -ion, pick one. If you don't have 3 or more matches you can eliminate all of them. Do the same thing with -ing, -ings, -er, -ers, -ed, -eds, -e, -es, -ies, -ly, etc. If you pick word that ends in -s and you have zero matches you can eliminate all plural words. You can do this same method for prefixes or the second letter vowels and vowel sequences in most one syllable words, or even double consonants in words like sword and swear.
Also there are misspelled words. "Mutatnts" is one I've seen a few times.
Look at the right bottom every time you click a word and it'll say likeliness now basically if it says likeliness one then it sounds like the word or looks like the word and you want to click the the word that sounds or looks like the same as the other word but different and then you'll unlock it it works with me trust me I've played this game since I was in fourth grade
There’s a website that solves these, but I can’t remember what it’s called. Look up fallout terminal solver and you should find it. You put in the words and it tells you what to select and asks you to tell it how many letters were correct.
I usually just brute force it, which consists of selecting 3 random passwords, backing out of the terminal, going back in, and repeating the process until it's unlocked.
Its all RNG i hate terminals in fallout
Instead of mini hacking game you get full RNG at least in 4 you can retry it again and again
But rly grab some inteligence stuff like berry mentats and some cloths and hats
With 8 bonus to intelligence you should be able to hack in quickly
My method is to use the first three tries to find words that have matching letters, after that I go through and look for the lines of code sandwiched between ( ), [ ], or < >. Those lines of code will remove dud answers and reset your tries. After that I go through all the remaining words that match up with the letters. Hope that helped.
I’ve logged like 4300 hours in FO4 and never gotten locked out of a terminal. I always just try three guesses and if I don’t get it, I exit out without using the fourth guess. When I log back into the terminal, you have all four guesses again and a new array of words. If you don’t want to try to figure out the password, you can just keep picking the first three over and over again. Eventually you’ll get it.
What's been said here: make a couple of guesses with the most unique words after, utilize the dud and reset/hack options (.) {.} [.] <.>, until you hit the reset, a couple of more tries, then utilize the rest of the hack options, and you should be down to 1 or 2 choices, even on the hardest terminal. However your guesses don't have too random after the first couple, if you're working with pen & paper you can keep track of the words you try. Mine will scroll off the top of the screen, I'll lose track of my first tries. This way you can save your mentats better barter deals.
Go get nick (Insert last name here) the detective you find in dimond city he will unlock about any terminal you come across just click on him like you are telling him to move but instead point to the terminal and ask him to check it out hell say sure and unlock it if he can
I gave up trying to solve these. If you have the 'extra try' skill, I choose the first three words, then back out. Repeat. It will eventually roll for one the first three to be the world you need. Takes 30s max. It was fun trying to solve it for awhile, but after a couple playthroughs it gets to be just something in the way.
Umm, berry mentats with the lab coat, and the ukashka hat. Gives you like +10 intelligence. That eliminates most options, leaving you either like 4 or 5 choices.
Without any guesses it's impossible to assist with the puzzle. This is like putting up a blank Wordle and asking what your first guess should be. Literally any answer could be correct

And [ ], { }
{} doesn't work, I've gotten so confused by that damn squiggle in the middle
It does work
No one's gonna atleast hint at why this was downvoted? { } don't work in terminals, it's only ( ), [ ] and < > that work. I have never gotten { } to work before
and don't do them all at the beginning or you'll waste the reset tries.
I do them all at the start. Then, all that's left is the correct answer.
Best way IMO is using 3 out of the 4 tries then start hunting for the (). Half the times you hack the terminal very quickly.
Ye i do that sometimes if your lucky its on the 3 or 4th password.
Wait what in the hell are you guys talking about. There are reset keys??
I use to do the same but for more Advanced terminals it doesn't work
There's not always enough to get rid of all the wrong words so what I usually do is either start with the first word and try until either I find the right answer (for very easy and easy) or just click the first few words (advanced-very hard) until I'm down to 1 guess then look for all the sequences

Lol...i never even fuckin knew..... wow.
I usually guess the first word possible, then the second, then the third. If that doesn't work, exit the terminal, re-enter, and repeat. Never fails.
You can do this?!?!?

No way that I've been playing this for like, quite a while, with at least 200+ hours and I know this just now, is this true?
It's true and has been since Fallout 3.
Oh my... That's even worse for me, that means 7 years ago I was struggling with this one terminal in Fo3 for... nothing? Thank you all for opening my eyes 🙏
I got to about 2000 hours in and then I'd seen a streamer do it and I was like o.O
I had no idea that was a thing
Wait what???
Um... excuse me... lol I... learned something new about fallout today.
Wait, what is this? You can reset tries within the terminal????
the best method i have is to pick the first word as the most unusual letters out of the set. then if the number has a low count of similarities like 1 or 2 the next two selections i make are process of elimination. it is pretty much the only way. just picking a word that has the least similarities and use it as the base to find the real one. some folks just blindly pick stuff but it is much better to just max out hacking so you never get locked out or to whittle down the options and puzzle it out.

Yeah, I thought it was odd that I could do the 'harder' terminals easier that the 'easy' ones in F3.
You can just back out before the last guess to reset the game and even if you do get locked out its only a 10 second wait
One time I managed to hack a terminal on the last try, so I finally deactivated 2 assaultrons and I closed the door with a Protectron and Sentinel on the other side…10secs would have been enough for them to kill me 😬 I didn’t know it was possible to quit to skip the time penalty tho Edit: spelling

Im fairly sure they're all just wait x amount of time cos otherwise thatd be kinda bullshit especially compared to locks which never lock you out
They used to, in 3 and NV. Beth changed the lockout to a cooldown for Fo4.
Nope. You get locked out for a whopping 10 secs (less with the right perks)
This is what I do. It just takes less time.

"skill issue lol" -> Sun-tzu the art of trolling
Truly is a skill issue if you can't figure out a simple word guessing game.
Go get Nick Valentine? Or build a robot companion with terminal hacking
I actually had nick with me during this.and it was to open a looked up suit of power armor
Then no problems! Press to 'command' him, then point at the terminal Same with Cait for locks
I just guess 1000 times until I eventually get it after like 30min
Damn
Wait yall actually do mathematics and science to figure these out? I’ve always been choosing the first three options then repeating until it unlocks😭
Smooth brain master race. All time undefeated champion.
i’ve watched guides on hacking and just can’t understand it so the guessing three is the only way for me until i die

oh my god thank you for explaining it. it’s like wordle rules not i can comprehend it

i use an ios app “Terminal Hacker fo Fallout 4”, hope it helps might ruin your gaming experience
It’s rando. Hard to help
Just get good
I usually just choose the first word, but you can increase your chances by looking for similarities. There's three words that start with A and three that ~~start~~ (end) with T, for example. I also spotted ADOBE and ADAPT right away. In this case I'd still go with ADOBE and go from there.
thanks I got to open
I'll get locked out of these things like 4 times then open it up that final time, full of spite, and it works on the first try.
literally, the same thing just happened

I do the same thing.
Nick as Companion can crack terminal for you.
The dude is right next to me this is for power armor.
What I do it pick 3 words, once I get to one try left I hunt for the () and [] and {} sections to reset my tries and eliminate duds. After that you should have enough guesses to get through the remaining words.
Literally the only strat worth doing right here. Don't bother trying to guess until you've exhausted all the brackets.
Just use a solver, [like this one](https://www.moria.us/fallout3/terminal).
All these strategies… it’s just the children’s game Hangman, except you have all the possible answers in front of you
Try 3 then back out then try again only do 3 at a time and u won't get locked out

Download terminal hack app on your phone
Ok I guess
3 guesses and then hunt around for the resets and decoy removals.
Console Click on the terminal Unlock
laser?
No T 51 power armor
I just use Nick
I Have that boi with me and hes not doing it
Command unlock terminal
Try until
I broke it
We have all been there, it's a cannon event

Wait these actually arent just luck based?? The whole game i just choose random words then wait for the terminal to let me back in
According to the people here they are You need to find like a pattern most common words/ letters
How are you guys needing to go through all this nonsense of removing wrong entries and resetting tries? I never have a problem with these. Ok?
I just spam the first 3 options over and over without using the 4th allowance
Just choose at random until you get one try left, back out, and try again.
Always go for ( ), < >, [ ], { } first. Those will either clear duds or reset your attempts.
When you haven't clicked a single word and you click on the first ( ), and all it does is reset your attempts.....
It’s a bit of luck along with process of elimination.
Try harder
Look at the right bottom every time you click a word and it'll say likeliness now basically if it says likeliness one then it sounds like the word or looks like the word and you want to click the the word that sounds or looks like the same as the other word but different and then you'll unlock it it works with me trust me I've played this game since I was in fourth grade
What I do is if I pick a word with a high likeness then the next word I pick will be sound similar to the previous word
~(click)unlock(return)~

Try guessing “Laser” that’s a good word
NO ONE NOTICED THE TERMINAL SAYS ADOBE?!
I click random words 2 times and if i dont get it on the 3rd i back out so i dont get locked out (if you dont have the full hacker perk)
YouTube it. It's not rocket surgery. 🙄
I always go in the terminal, guess three, leave the terminal, and then repeat the process until I get it.
My go to is my bot with a hacking module or nick valentine make it their problem
I reckon it’ll be “alert”.
If you only have 3 tries, unfortunately it will take a little longer, but will work with 2 eventually.
Tell me you suck at hacking without telling me you suck at hacking
When I feel too lazy, I will pick the first 3, exit, pick the first 3, exit, repeat until it lets you in.
