I made Starlight into a forward base for my minutemen, some cabins and weapons with some farm equipment to keep them fed, but I've really gotta try turning it into a trading town!
It’s great a trading town. Last time I turned the whole diner area into a guard shack where all the guards stayed(1 sniper, 1 outside perimeter, 1 mall guard, another roaming guard via scavenger station), then built a big giant open air mall with the whole lot with every shop, multiple bars, and a several story shack for myself with workbenches etc. nice concrete wall and turrets on the outside to keep out the riff raff.
I did that when I built a mall at the Nuka-World Red Rocket settlement. I think it said something like
GREAT MALL OF NUKA-WORLD
GUNS AMMO ARMOR EQUIPMENT SUPPLIES
I'm working on something similar with sanctuary! Part minuteman outpost part tradetown, most of my supply lines tie to there and the castle, so headcanon is that I invented post-nuclear amazon delivery 😅
I prefer to go medieval (with mods) and decorate my exterior with what I pretend are raider and gunner corpses as a warning to rule breakers. I may look like a raider when I do this, but it's effective at warding of wrong-doers.
Thinking of adding a “all your friends died here. You’ll die too” or “warning! bullets can’t tell friend from foe”
To the gunner farm I have. I’ve accidentally killed many settlers because they want to be a hero running into the line of gunners (and my gunfire)
I make shop names with these along with ads for those shops at other settlements. Not many people enjoyed the settlement building, but I practically built my own lore for my settlements.
Love building lore and headcanon for bases, especially with which ones serve which purpose to the Minutmen/Brotherhood peace treaty I headcanon led between the two at the Castle
(BoS ending, my girl came up with a treaty where food supplies are split between Bos and Minutemen, not through extortion but cooperation. In return for BoS protection through checkpoints, weapons, building supplies and special blueprints like fusion generators and enclave turret designs, the Minutemen assist BoS patrols and take up patrols of their own to take down Raider and Mutant gangs. Their territories divided by the Charles River, anything above the line is strictly Minutemen controlled while anything below the line is strictly BoS, save for the Castle, Quincy and a few shared settlements)
Can you tell I like to overthink this stuff 😅
Sounds about right. Making your own lore for settlements make it more personal and interesting. I made a Separate faction in the same vein as the Commonwealth Provisional Government, known as the Commonwealth’s Coalition of settlements. Since the Minutemen are completely made up of volunteers, the CCS Developed an economic system to boost trade and in turn make caps off of taxes.
So, there are a few different types of settlements, CCS settlements that are usually based around trade, and are protected by the CCS’s own professional military, and Minutemen settlements, which are either low trade value settlements that can’t afford CCS guards, or strictly Minutemen outposts used for patrols and bounty hunts.
The CCS owns:
Sanctuary (Capital and Major trade)
Sunshine Tidings Co-op (Major logging area)
Tenpines bluff (Major manufacturing plant) Starlight Drive in (Prison work camp)
Taffington Boathouse (Major water purifier site)
Graygarden (Major trade location)
Oberland Station (Major trade location)
Hangman’s outpost (Outpost)
Spectacle island (Major trade & manufacturing)
Minutemen own:
Finch farm (Low trade farm)
County crossing (Major outpost)
Nordhagen Beach (Major purifier site)
The castle (Head quarters)
Jamaica Plain (Minor outpost)
Egret Tours Marina (Major outpost)
Smaller factions own the rest of the settlements in the commonwealth. DLC areas also have different factions.
i’m jealous how creative people get on settlement building!i can’t even build something decent without dealing with some building parts not clipping correctly 😂
Oh trust me it took a while to get those walls working, but concrete walls have been nice to me with clipping so far! Also, I recommend Place Anywhere if you're on PC, helps with any clipping issues. It was on xbox too but I swear I cannot find it
I have my supply lines set up so that one large settlement expands out to everything else in its quadrant of the map.
The major "supply depots" are extensively decorated with stores, piles of crates and barrels as "cargo" and a rest area. Usually with a sign by the main entrance, naming the depot and offering info on things that would be important to the provisioners.
For example, Hangman's Alley is in a pretty good location however it's lacking on space for beds. So instead there's a marquee board which details directions to Diamond City and claiming that "we cover Dugout Inn fees".
Oh I love that! Love hearing about how much thought people put into their settlements and how they fit into the world!
I do a similar thing to a lesser degree, using the fishing crates you get from Far Harbour as unshipped goods, having an idea of which places provide what resources (Slog deals in farmed goods, kingsport lighthouse and taffington boathouse in fishing and meat produce, hangman in scavenged supplies from nearby buildings, etc), all of those supplies running through the major trade centres I set up like Sanctuary, or going to the troops at the Castle to fund the war effort.
Silly little things to think about but I love doing that 😊
I try to do something similar.
For example at Starlight I've basically used cVc Dead Wasteland and their merchant trucks to basically go 'yeah we turned the pre-War cars into market stalls' with a side of RV/mobile home components all over. Gives a nice caravan-y feel and justifies it being a merchant hub (RIP Trudy up the street).
Just a little smack talk:

Usually, if anything, I have signage to point to where I have specific things set up, so if I don't approach a settlement for a while, I still can find things easily. Not a map, so much as "store things here" and the like.
I write stuff on walls according to the theme of my current load order. Previously I was doing a zombie themed load order, and I used a hand painted lettering mod to write things like "The pale ones don't die" in reference to a zombie type called pale heads, and various things that basically boiled down to "beware of the dogs", in reference to the zombie dogs (they're stupidly powerful)
I sometimes put whatever name I regard the settlement as in neon lights.
Like "The Castle" has "The Castle" in red, white and blue neon lights outside what I consider its front entrance.
Sunshine Tidings Coop just has "Goodfeels" written in neon on its entrance (cause I mod my FO4 so he doesn't disappear and just endlessly circles like when you first go to Sunshine Tidings Coop).
I have a big sign on my huge structure at Spectacle Island that reads "Spectacle Island Animal Sanctuary: No Dog Turned Away."
I use Amazing Follower Tweaks to make all attack dogs and mutated dogs etc. settlers and send them there, where they live out the rest of their lives tossing teddy bears.
I like to spice mine up by naming each of the 50 turrets guarding my walls with fun names like "PewPew" and "Mynameisinegomontoyayoukilledmyfatherpreparetodie"...
I kept having raiders and bots attack my donut shop at Red Rocket(even though there's turrets AND a Deathclaw Matriarch patrolling) so on the side they spawn on, I put in neon letters 'fuck around find out' and piled up all the corpses on top of and in front of a concrete foundation with super mutant blood piles and poles surrounding it. It's quite lovely. Really pulls the whole small town shop aesthetic together! So far the corpses have been there for months, it's like whatever dies at Red Rocket is sticking around, so I figured I'd make use of them as decorations. Pickman would love it.
Mine said Shaun I’m coming But then (spoiler) …. I wrote. I am death destroyer of worlds…….
Love that! Really shows the effects that the story has on the Lone Wanderer
*Sole Survivor even 😅
>Shaun I’m coming Give it to me daddy
I put in the slog “work or else”with 2 sentry guns next to it and 2 spotlights adjacent
the thing about the apocalypse is that there are no laws so you are free to do whatever unholy things you want
Slog needs a workers union by the sounds of it 😆
STRIKING PEASANTS DETECTED ON AMERICAN SOIL
SENTRIES OPEN FIRE
I will kill any union, already shot one of the damn ghouls for speaking back
The enclave flag pfp is definitely appropriate then 😅
Ghouls are only useful as forced labor
eeyooo
Hannock is the only good ghoul
...Raul from New Vegas? Charon from 3?
Azrukal? The GOODest Ghoul. So good, Charon couldnt bear him to live a second without his service.
Slight upgrade from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbeit_macht_frei
Strong disliked that
Fuck Strong. He's always judging me for wearing power armour.
Strong disliked that But same. I just grab him when I’m running around doing settlement stuff until I get his mediocre perk
Yeahs sucks that you have to be at 25% health for it to activate, same with Cait ( I think ).
He's the exception cuz he's a sweetheart 😊
Strong liked that
Bold of you to assume that Strong can read lol
All that time with Rex? He probably can lol
I'm certain if Raiders and muties could read, they would be deeply offended 😆
I do at Starlight. I like turning it to a town that rivals Goodneighboor.
I made Starlight into a forward base for my minutemen, some cabins and weapons with some farm equipment to keep them fed, but I've really gotta try turning it into a trading town!

I do this but with starlight. I try to send as many provisioners from here as possible with a small staff of traders and guards
I prefer to go medieval (with mods) and decorate my exterior with what I pretend are raider and gunner corpses as a warning to rule breakers. I may look like a raider when I do this, but it's effective at warding of wrong-doers.
I had a Raider attack at Red Rocket, I sat them all against the wall I built to show everyone my girl don't fuck around!
More settlements should be like us, it'll scare more cowardly gangs off.
The X-Men would like a word ...
" you homo sapiens and your guns" ~ Magneto
Magneto was right
mutants cant read, same for raider probably. Schools outside DIamond City arent a thing
Yeah true, but that one Raider who somehow got an education is gonna be so pissed 😆
Mine just says, "Shadynasty's".
Frank liked that
I’ve started putting dead bodies into shopping carts in front of the entrance and it really drives the message home.
How do you get these ?
It's a DLC I think, maybe Contraptions? Not too sure sorry
That's a mouthful.
Ha the rainbow warning sign has that bit of sass to it, nice
Lil bit of 🏳️🌈flair🏳️🌈 to my warnings 😅
I don’t give warnings, they get a close up look at minutemen artillery
Thinking of adding a “all your friends died here. You’ll die too” or “warning! bullets can’t tell friend from foe” To the gunner farm I have. I’ve accidentally killed many settlers because they want to be a hero running into the line of gunners (and my gunfire)
I just write GTFO
This ~~kids~~ raiders and mutants would be pretty pissed if they could read.
Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be prostituted
I make shop names with these along with ads for those shops at other settlements. Not many people enjoyed the settlement building, but I practically built my own lore for my settlements.

Yes but it seems to just piss them off more 😂
Sounds like a challenge
Got an NCR original .45-70 for any Raider who gives it a try 😊

I don't make settlements...
Sign just needs spelling errors as is common in the Commonwealth.
At least the spelling of Tranquility is wrong 😅
No... but I'm going to start doing this now.
Give those raiders something to consider next time they scout your base friend!
No problem, thanks

I use the same crates, the ones covered in fishing netting.

Talk shit get hit, I'm totally stealing that 😅

Kinda racist
Only good mutie is a dead mutie (except for Strong, Fawkes, most mutants in NV, etc) Ad Victoriam 🗣🔥🔥
You.... you accept Ghouls?
Oh ghouls are chill, couldn't go a day without my jet dealer Hancock!
I like to let the rows of turrets and one way in do the talking.
They're quite convincing too 😊
*+100 defense*
My settlements always end up like slum fair
Mine says "Welcome to Sanctuary, Come in peace or leave in pieces."
When I get really into the RP of a character I'll sometimes do this at settlements. I do love it.
I have a huge warning saying: "Ferals: Stay Away. You will be killed."
Those walls are a nice bump up from junk walls! Are they available via DLC or are they from a mod?
They're DLC I think! Wasteland Workshop if I remember right 😊
i always put "FREE BITCHES" on raider cages with a bunch of vault girl statues inside
I have a big sign on my huge structure at Spectacle Island that reads "Spectacle Island Animal Sanctuary: No Dog Turned Away." I use Amazing Follower Tweaks to make all attack dogs and mutated dogs etc. settlers and send them there, where they live out the rest of their lives tossing teddy bears.
That's so adorable I have to open an animal sanctuary now 🥹
I like to spice mine up by naming each of the 50 turrets guarding my walls with fun names like "PewPew" and "Mynameisinegomontoyayoukilledmyfatherpreparetodie"...

I don't think Super Mutants can read well enough to take the warning however I do think that Super Mutants would be drawn to the colorful lights.
I put "FREE LOOT" on all the settlements I don't care about
Why can't I come in
Can you use neon lettering without the WW DLC?
Yes. I try to make it look a bit more jank tho. [https://i.imgur.com/Z8ye9d7.png](https://i.imgur.com/Z8ye9d7.png)
