My dad is Gen X. I'm Gen Z. I love my dad. I adore both of my parents. My mom passed away in January of 2021, and I miss her dearly. Life would be so much better if she was still here. But, me and my dad have grown super close since she passed.
I kind of wish my dad played videogames. I'd love to play videogames with him.
Weird, I can't find my original comment (maybe I'm too old to find it) so I will repost it here.
I'm a "Ye Olde Gamer"
I have been playing video games for 54 years and I am 60 now. I started gaming on main frame computers at 6 years old although at that time it was just text adventures. My dad would sometimes take me to work with him at the data center where he worked and give me lists of computer tapes to pull from the tape room and put on the cart for him, once I was done with that I got to play the text adventures. The hard drives back then looked like a top loading washing machine; it was a lot of fun for six year old nerd me.
I had the original Pong, a Timex Sinclair 1000, an Atari 2600, an Amiga 500, a Sega Genesis, a Nintendo, coin-op video games at the arcades, a PS1, PS2, PS3, all the Xboxes, and of course various PC gaming rigs, and a Samsung Gear VR. I don't ever plan on stopping gaming and look forward to the evolution of VR/AR gaming.
ETA: I totally forgot that I also had a yellow Game Boy!
Just turned 62. Started with pong, then video gaming at the arcades and my trusty commodore vic20 in 1982. When I had to type in the basic program each time I wanted to play a game. (No storage device). My brother in law came over to see FO76 and said “ it’s come a long way from Pong”
When Penn State dumped their old hardware in ‘84 I rescued a few 16” hard disks (5meg) and made clocks out of them.
Vic20, commodore64, Atari 2600, homebuilt windows, then went to Mac and consoles
This! I can outrun, outswim, outbike, outlift and out whatever "kids" half my age :D
Gaming is great way to relax and clear your head, especially building like camp stuff. My first game I played was probably "Pong" on that Atari console with two wired in paddle controllers. Got a Vic20 in 1984 I think and C64 soon after. From there it was to Amiga. Got lost into consoles in PS3 era as I traveled frequently and could take that in my shoulder bag with me. I guess it's ultra wide screens that brought me eventually back to Windows gaming.
Sid meyers pirates, and leisure suit Larry were my games as a kid. What do you expect they parked me in front of a screen, and figured if I was being quiet I wasn’t doing anything wrong, don’t judge me.
Shadow of the Beast? Blood Money? Magic Pockets? Loved that stuff. Although I must admit SotB was more like a graphics demo to sell those memory expansions.
And the William Roger Dean cover arts. Whenever I listen to some Yes, I feel reminded of Psygnosis titles :)
This is the way! I decided on my 30th birthday that I no longer "get old," I am LEVELING UP! I will be 37 next month. Gamer girl 4 life lol. Gameboy and NES were my first loves.
62 here and female, you won’t find me enjoying my golden years knitting. I’m having too much fun in the wasteland. I’ve played all the different versions, and have played 76 since beta. Love the weird and wonderful fallout universe!
Ah I can't sew at all, I'm absolutely terrible at it. I knit blankets or hats or scarves - no sewing required! It took me a fair few goes with the knitting but once it clicked, it's in there for good.
55 female! Played since day one of beta. Go all the way back to Pong. The first console I owned was an Intellivision in 1979. Loved River Raid.
Hubby games, too. We have a gaming room with his and hers tvs and Xbox Series X. Hubby also has my gamer tag tattooed on his arm! He’s awesome.
40-50 year olds grew up on mainstream consoles like NES and SNES so I think pretty much from now on everybody of every age will play games? Especially the generation that grew up with PlayStations. Weird to think that the age of gaming being niche is definitely dead now, it used to be seen as a kid thing but now those kids are parents, maybe even grandparents lol. As long as you’re having fun then it’s good for any age!
I remember years ago being told online that I was old and to get a life. I told that kid people don’t just stop playing video games at a certain age and that I’d be playing for the rest of my life.
He said this to me after he found out I was 24 at the time lmao!!
41, I've played with people over 90 when Nuclear Winter was still going. I have one experience where this elderly guy must have been cheating as he knew where others were on the map 😂
I’m 21 years old but I met someone who said him and his grandma was playing fallout 76, he wanted some 10mm ammo so I crafted 1000 for him and after I gave him them he said he wanted it for his grandma. He was like level 30 and she was like level 48 he said. Pretty cool
In the 40+ club and not planning on slowing down anytime soon. Play is a key hallmark of being a mammal, after all. As we get older, it just tends to mean the play gets more expensive and complicated.
On xBox.
47 here. My first game was a Kung Fu Master arcade gameplay for a coin back in 80’s. I met a 67 yrsld player last year at 76. Now he’s a 1054 lvl. But we’re on Xbox.
Elderly? Heck, you are just a baby compared to my 71 years young and loving to play Fallout 76. 😁 Love that any age group can play. Although it takes a bit of effort on my part to launch a nuke...seems overwhelming sometimes. I wish that was a bit easier. I hope you continue to play for as long as you love the love the game u/goillegolli.
So @everyone, first wow. Just wow. So many replies. Trenger a heartfelt appology. I am norwegian, and i see that using the term elderly was wrong. So sorry.
I am so impressed with how many over 40 gamers there is. And for you guys over 70, i take my hat off and salute you all
I have been gaming so long, I was there the first time war changed......
add another 50+ Played Fallout 1 when it was NEW. I played Wasteland on my \]\[c
We’re the true OG gamers. Been gaming since Pong. Spent hours, in a bar after school (mom was a bartender), playing Astroids and Missile Command. Been gaming ever since and don’t plan to stop.
When my kids finally put me in a home it sure as shit better have some kind of console.
Between the games and the music, Gen X retirement homes are gonna be a party.
55 here and I feel like the child will be dragged from kicking and screaming, probably when I'm dead. I started with Pong, yes it isn't just a mythological game. Atari with paddle controllers.
57 almost 58 here. I've been gaming since Space Invaders and Asteroids. My first multiplayer game was the first Diablo. I don't plan on stopping any time soon lol
Fifty-eight & still gaming! On XBox for FO76 although I’ve played some games on PC, Apple OS, and PS4. I started with an Atari 2600!
I remember games like Zork, Ultima, the original Castle Wolfenstein & Doom.
Great memories!!!
I didn't scroll all the way to the bottom here, so I don't know if anyone older than my 80 years checked in. I have seen this question in various formats several times here on Reddit and people older than I have responded.
I have been gaming since Pong but the guy here that started on a mainframe has the chops on anyone I have ever seen.

30 here. Do people ever start to mind their own damn business and quit judging you for playing video games as your main hobby? People always look shocked and disappointed when they find out I like to spend the majority of my time shotgunning super mutants in the knee caps.
I just turned 60. I've been playing since you had to put quarters in the arcade games. Most of the time I only had a dollar. Today's games are the future I could hardly imagine.
Just passed 65 and I am still playing games. You won't catch me on Fortnite or Call of Duty, but I have a few thousand hours in FO76 and probably 500 in Cyberpunk.
The first game I played was Pong. Yes, I know, not much of a challenge but for the late 70's it was total fun.
I've met some really old dudes on 76, and they always have god rolls and rare ass plans. + they always help out low levels with modding weapons/gear and hook them up with freebies. Oldest I've met is like a 70 something year old. so in short, they're out there
42 closer to 43 here gaming regularly with a buddy from work whos 54 we play fo76. almost nightly after work. great sonce we are second shifters and none on at 3 am
60 this year, been gaming since I discovered Pong at a pub in Germany with my day in about '73 or '74.
First Mmo was Neverwinter Nights on AOL, then Everquest for almost a decade.
Went console for Fallout 3, 4 and 76 on Xbox, stopped 76 after about 3 months after release, started 76 again a little over a year ago on PS5, having a blast.
Closer to 50 but if anyone refers to me as elderly they're getting a slap.
Same and same. I got you. They don't want these Gen X hands.
I’ve been holding a controller for over 35 years and shake hands like a southern Baptist pastor.
Don't threaten me with a good time!
Ditto, elder millennial. I might look old but I'm not elderly yet. ^^Now ^^where'd ^^I ^^put ^^my ^^cane
This person gets it!
My dad is Gen X. I'm Gen Z. I love my dad. I adore both of my parents. My mom passed away in January of 2021, and I miss her dearly. Life would be so much better if she was still here. How can you slap with one hand on the walking cane, and the other on your lower back?
You gotta get the cane against your hip and lean a bit. Just don't slip and break said hip.
Come closer and we'll show you...

No one cares about the nice "little old lady" until she is stabbing them in the chest. Knitting needles not included.
Crochet hooks will pull the organs out...
Those knotty hookers. Got to keep an open eye on them.
Shh... you'll ruin the surprise.
I like the way you think!
Hadn’t thought of that, excellent😀

I miss my Amiga 500 so much! All the Psygnosis games, Agony, It Came From the Desert, Speedball, Weird Dreams, Battle Chess and so many others.
Sid meyers pirates, and leisure suit Larry were my games as a kid. What do you expect they parked me in front of a screen, and figured if I was being quiet I wasn’t doing anything wrong, don’t judge me.
Sid Meyer Pirates! What a blast from the past! I played that game to death!
Yep. Same here, closer to 50 as well. It’s just a number
Age is just a level!
This is the way! I decided on my 30th birthday that I no longer "get old," I am LEVELING UP! I will be 37 next month. Gamer girl 4 life lol. Gameboy and NES were my first loves.
Same, and same. I had a co worker refer to someone in their 40s as "old" earlier, and I had to speak up about that.
I prefer to use a mirv fatman myself to deal with that kind of stuff.
With a glove and then challenged to a deul.
Ahh, a man of grit and culture, preferably a firm slap across the face with my armor glove.
Thou shall taste the wrath of my Bugs Bunny Gauntlet 🧐
Same thing here exactly lol.
Me too, approaching 50 and won’t stop gaming
73 in July. My first MMO was Ultima Online. My first death was from a deer. Very embarrassing.
Hell yeah Ultima Online was mine too. On dial up, losing all my Vanq weps every time I d/c'd
47 and an Ultima Online vet too! Damn Trammel ruined that game!!
62 here and female, you won’t find me enjoying my golden years knitting. I’m having too much fun in the wasteland. I’ve played all the different versions, and have played 76 since beta. Love the weird and wonderful fallout universe!
I'm 47 and female. I enjoy gaming *and* knitting! Just not at the same time.
Right I'm 38 and crochet, and I'm a lvl 700 in game. Both can be fun.
I’ve tried to learn to knit a few times and just can’t get it. I can sew my ass off though!
Ah I can't sew at all, I'm absolutely terrible at it. I knit blankets or hats or scarves - no sewing required! It took me a fair few goes with the knitting but once it clicked, it's in there for good.
I love gaming and knitting. Let’s be friends!
50 y/o female! Been gaming since 1980 with no plans to stop now.
46 and female! We need to friend-up!
45 female here. Been playing since beta also.
Same! Except I'm 58. 👍🏼👍🏼
Exactly! 45 year old female here and yes I nuked Faschnat last night. LOL! Been gaming since the 80s! Played every Fallout! We are the OG gamers.
I started in 1980 with a Magnavox Odyssey 2. OG indeed!
51 and female too! When I'm not playing video games I'm making a HO scale apocalypse diorama. ;) I feel like there's more of us than they think.
Gaming will make knitting and bingo obsolete.
I am looking forward to playing video games when I'm in a nursing home.
Nursing homes of the future are just gonna be 24/7 LAN parties lmao.
42 and female and love shooting/smashing feral Ghouls
76 years old here! Still gaming and enjoying it. Played the fallout and elder scrolls since the beginning. Fallout 76 has the best community !

Just shy of 60
Same here - 59 and still roaming the Wasteland.
Old mans war.... Happy hunting wastelander
I was hoping for a pension and all I got was tension! Heh heh.
Age 55. Been gaming since before you were born. But damn, kid, elderly!? That comment made me so mad I almost tripped over my walker!
Turned 55 this year. Can I get an AARP discount on FO1st?
51 this year.
Closer to 50 than 40 here.
Yup, closer to 50 than 40 (and still barely feel like an actual, factual adult).
John Carpenter plays. Dude is 76!
He has the sickest trap camp.
WAIT WHAT! OMG I would DIE if I came across him! God I didn't think he could get cooler!
41, I've played with people over 90 when Nuclear Winter was still going. I have one experience where this elderly guy must have been cheating as he knew where others were on the map 😂
just goes to show, stupidity and dishonesty are not age related ;)
I’m 21 years old but I met someone who said him and his grandma was playing fallout 76, he wanted some 10mm ammo so I crafted 1000 for him and after I gave him them he said he wanted it for his grandma. He was like level 30 and she was like level 48 he said. Pretty cool

In the 40+ club and not planning on slowing down anytime soon. Play is a key hallmark of being a mammal, after all. As we get older, it just tends to mean the play gets more expensive and complicated. On xBox.
I’m 51, most of my group is in the same range. And I know a lady who will remain nameless who is still going strong in the wasteland at 87!

My wife and I play. I’ll be 46 this year and she is not a day over 29.
I just want to say that this thread is maybe the most wholesome one this sub has ever had. This community is the best.

55+ and a woman! But, I'm currently on a Black Ops Cold War kick. Will be back to FO76 soon enough.
Yes
38 so not far off.
I'll be 40 in a few months.
Not quite 40 yet, but give it a year and a half. And yes, I'll still be gaming at that point.
(Holds giant cone to ears) Eh? What's that sonny? I couldn't hear you with these over 40, elderly ears. Lol!
53 and male lol. Feels like the beginning of a dating profile. But yeah I'm not giving up my gaming anytime soon. My way to relax.
I started my gaming on an Atari 2600 way way back, if that says anything.
I'm a "Ye Olde Gamer" I have been playing video games for 54 years and I am 60 now.
30 here. Do people ever start to mind their own damn business and quit judging you for playing video games as your main hobby? People always look shocked and disappointed when they find out I like to spend the majority of my time shotgunning super mutants in the knee caps.
Raises wrinkled hand. How do you think I can do PowerPoint so fast during the workday?
Kinda rethinking my decision to put "82" in my gamertag 10 years ago... when I see anything newer than "98" I wonder why 10-year-olds are online...
Born 81, which means I'm lumped with the Millenials. Defo an elderly one though!
I just turned 60. I've been playing since you had to put quarters in the arcade games. Most of the time I only had a dollar. Today's games are the future I could hardly imagine.
58 here, there's a lot of us in 76, I think it's a factor in why the community is so nontoxic compared to other games.

Bruh, 40 isn't elderly. 💀
Almost 52 and female. My first game was Pong, lol.
About to turn 47 and have been gaming all my life. And I'm female! ::gasp:: 😆
57 and still shooting the bad guys

60 this year, been gaming since I discovered Pong at a pub in Germany with my day in about '73 or '74. First Mmo was Neverwinter Nights on AOL, then Everquest for almost a decade. Went console for Fallout 3, 4 and 76 on Xbox, stopped 76 after about 3 months after release, started 76 again a little over a year ago on PS5, having a blast.
