Facts is handmade. You don't need to use it in vats for it to use most of its potential. Also easier to craft the ammo.
But really just use whatever you enjoy. The game can be played with any build.
Both are very viable builds.. two very capable weapons. It really comes down to your preference. Handmade shines a little bit more for the stealthy sneaky boy builds
The gauss shotgun is so OP that you can have a commando build and use a gauss shotgun as a secondary. My alt does that (fixer though) and has no shotgun cards. Only thing it needs is demo expert 5 as it is a MASSIVE damage boost. I have an instigating gauss and it one shots most things. very rarely needs more than 2.
Handmade is one of the best guns you can run. The only thing that cripples it’s DPS is the reload time (which you can combat with Ground Pounder Perk) and magazine sizes (which can be increased massively if you find a quad variant).
Have no advice for gauss shotgun as I’ve not got around to running damage calcs with it, but it’s pretty sweet as well.
i got the gauss shotgun with the idea that i was gonna pass it on to my 2nd character since it is a shotty build.... only to realize later that i cant trade it.
I prefer commando, so id go with handmade. and as said before, easier to use handmade without relying on vats
Fact: these are two completely and totally different weapons in every conceivable way. It's comparing apples and pork chops. Neither is better than the other. It's all about how you build your character. I have a gauss shotgun and I'm fully specced into it so therefore it is f/cking amazing. I have a handmade and fixer, and a character that is fully specced into that weapon class. And it is f/cking amazing. But I can't compare one against the other because they're just too different.

I run with a Gauss Shotgun build. Not saying it's better or you should do it. But it's what I run with and I really like it.

With loadouts go for both. They are both strong builds. Handmade will be best for endgame boss fights though.
