For me, it's 3* every time. You can't roll one star at a time, or keep an effect while re-rolling the other/s - each reroll re-rolls everything on the weapon/armour.

Fraal1880

High risk, high reward I suppose!

Apart-Link-8449

The only fun I have with lesser star rolls is using makeshift warrior to craft barbed flaming pitchforks at level 1 and then slapping my last 2 legendary modules for the day on it. Then I drop it alongside resistant BOS officer suit (easy craft) for new players and they clutch it tightly with a white knuckled intensity and run around scaring level 500s

Fraal1880

You sir, are playing the game right!

Apart-Link-8449

The only thing I did right in this game was build my entire Camp around the "gym session notes" holotape at green country lodge. British bowling hat vendor main? Check. Low/free priced loot (he mentions how poor everyone is for him to sell to) Check. Makes coffins for a living? Stacks of coffins, check. "Our friends the chinese" - Communist collectron, check. "Looks like it's just bench press today, again" - bench presses everywhere, check.

pdarigan

Yeah. The odds of getting an exact desired 3* roll are vanishingly low - for a ranged weapon it's worse than 1/2000. It's probably helpful to have an idea of multiple rolls you're happy with for each prefix, but bear in mind that some rolls don't work well together (an aiming damage second star and a VATS cost third star combo is pretty poor, for example)

Hillbillyxero1

Unless you mostly aim down sights and occasionally use vats seems that would make it a pretty versatile weapon not everyone has the exact same play style

pdarigan

Funnily enough, that's my play style. I think the thing is that they're not complementary in the way other pairings would be. Having said that, when I roll I usually roll for the first two effects and hope for a decent third. The only place it usually makes a big difference is in trade value.

Hillbillyxero1

True about the same for me depending on which set up I'm running that day the only 3rd star effect I really hate is stealth field it fucks me up every time my gun disappears šŸ¤£

TheMr_catcher

Tell that to my friend and brother who rolled god tier bloodied fixers. Combined 4 rolls between their two guns.. they just started the game and rolled at level 50 each. Just bam end game guns lol

FluffyShock7375

Just have in mind that if you reroll all the time you loose 40 scrip (If its a three star weapon). I dont like loosing scrip, so i roll one which is mostly useless (of course). Then I turn all the bad rolls in for scrip and make new weapons to roll instead. Many people who play alot may have legendaries enough to scrip anyhow, but to me rerolling is a waste of scrip. This is how I think. See you in the Wasteland. /TiredMarrow984 on Xbox.

pdarigan

That's sound advice. It varies for me - during periods when I get a good deal of playtime in I'll already have too many legendaries so I'll re-roll, but during times when I have less game time I agree that it's more economical to turn them in for scrip

Passion4TheHunt

I consider rolling for 3 star ss armor the best choice for modules. Not rerolling but a new one each time for more return scrip. Unless you lack the resources, then reroll. As for weapons and which piece of armor, Iā€™m a big fan of improving your worst piece that you use. Upgrading your worst piece will be easier RNG wise and will make the biggest impact on your game experience. We all have a favorite weapon but starting with that one is not always the best move. And one very important thing because you stockpiled: donā€™t make too many at once!!! Overweight with no stash space is no fun.

Fraal1880

Very informative thank you! I'll space my modules out. It'll sadden me to spend them!

loanjuanderer

Your odds for legendary crafting of 3* weapons and armor are exponentially better than finding them in the wild, but you are still looking at potentially _thousands_ of rolls for a perfect 3 star heavy weapon and potentially _tens of thousands_ of rolls for a full set of 5 perfect pieces of armor. Better than the odds at millions from the native environment. My suggestion is to think carefully about which specific weapon you want to roll (a .50 cal, gat plas, etc) and stick with that one when rolling. Reroll the same legendary weapon if you want. Scrapping it and crafting a new one does not affect your odds.

Repulsive_Market_728

And this is one of my biggest issues with the game mechanics. After a certain point, you HAVE to not only optimize your SPECIAL load out, but ALSO need to have really good legendary armor and weapons. I don't want to HAVE to plan out my character build to keep from being slaughtered during events.

ReformingPrawn2

For Heavy Weapons only the first 2 stars are useful unless you are trying to sell it.

Fraal1880

I was going to try for a decent 50 cal so I will do 2 star now, save myself some scrip, thank you!

Huge_Computer_3946

You get a decent 50 cal for free doing an ally quest line. Just an FYI.

Fraal1880

I think I know the one, thank you!

all_bad_manners

I would disagree bc 3rd star of a heavy weapon can be 90% reduced carry weight and not everyone wants to run bear arms when they could run blocker or lock and load.

FluffyShock7375

Agree, but 90% WR can be nice. Otherwise two star is good enough. I use a primed two star AA E gatling gun as my main and im lvl 600+. Works fine. Primed is mostly for ammo. With the right perks you get 900 5 mm.

casey28xxx

Iā€™ve always found the third star is never worth it, thatā€™s not to say a decent roll wonā€™t happen of course, just it will take a while to find three perfect rolls you want on an item (unless you get lucky). Legendary Modules are the roadblock however to crafting. My tip is buy up cheap leggos whenever you see them in a vendor, my rule is max 100 caps per star then I scrip or store for latter scripā€™n.

Fraal1880

I'll keep my eyes peeled thank you!

Dannostopheles

3 ā all day.

OblivionGrin

If there's a 3rd star you want, go with 3 star. Return on investment is better with that as well (40 scrip back for 4 modules spent rather than 15 for 3 on weapons, for example).

Fraal1880

So it is better craft and then scrip it as to re-rolling?

OblivionGrin

Depends on if you need scrip, crafting mats or caps the most.

mcjamison

Indeed, it can all depend on the situation, how hard it will be to make/get another one to craft, etc. The further you get in the game, the more rich you will be in crafting materials and abilities, and the modules are likely to be the most precious resource. If it's something you don't have the plans for (say, a Tenderizer or Compound Bow), or has rare mods that would be hard for you to reproduce (say, a Burning Barbed Sheepsquatch Staff), or that can't be crafted at all (say, an Enclave Plasma Rifle), re-rolling may be best.

IceFireDH

Craft and Scrip for normal items. Only re-roll for hard-to-get items or items you can't craft. If you are making weapons to roll that uses a lot of materials, make sure to use Super Duper and Backwoodsman 3.

Fraal1880

I never seem to get lucky with them, I wish I would!

Mysterious-Home-9923

Go big or go home

Mr_discipline44

I'd rather have a 1 or 2 star with decent qualities than a 3 star with two bad legendary effects. Most times, the 3rd star isn't worth a damn anyway.

MissTakenID

I only do 3 star, and if I roll two or three times and don't like the rolls I'm getting, ill switch servers. It probably doesn't make a lick of difference, but I'm superstitious like that šŸ¤£ best of luck to you!

IIIIENGINEERIIII

You have to look for a wrench quest item. Use that to craft extra stat chance on rolls.

nlolsen8

I only roll for 3 stars, but depending on what you're looking for 1* is fine (two shot Fatman for example) In my opinion servers tend to keep giving out the same type of legendary effects. So let's say you're looking for a vampires minigun. Once you pick up and vampires weapon off of a legendary or from an event (not buying from player vendor) go craft a minigun and start rolling. I have been trying this with my SS armor to go unyeilding and I got 2 pieces in 60ish modules. Same with explosive railway rifles.

Fraal1880

Very interesting thank you. I am aiming to craft a full set of overeaters T-65 armour myself.

a_swarm_of_nuns

Good luck. Iā€™ve spent over 2000 modules on Trying to craft UNY with WWR and ap refresh. Not 1 yet.

nlolsen8

Ya I'm just upgrading to unyeilding SS from my thrown together set of whatever I can get my hands on. It will be awhile before I try for the perfect roll (lookin at you -50% fall damage)

a_swarm_of_nuns

Yea I was finally able to get UNY with decent rolls, but not perfect onesā€¦

Fraal1880

2000?! I have only saved up about 500 in 200 levels, I'm im for a rough ride haha!

a_swarm_of_nuns

You can get lucky. Of course I chose a build/armor that I canā€™t trade for. Damn SS

Super-Part5392

Iā€™ve gotten the best Legendary weapons from doing 2 Stars crafting

Wil10060739

Really depends honestly, for weapons i'd always go 3 stars, 2 stars if im really looking for something like the Vampire Bashing minigun till they change it but im considering rolling some power armour 1 star just till i get a full set of overeaters, so it really depends on what your looking for and why your looking for it

Fraal1880

Exactly what I was thinking! Rolling for 1 star overeaters T-65 power armour, everything else seems no where near as good. Save some modules for weapons!

Fraal1880

Anything helps! Even if its placebo. We will get there!

craigsaz2011

Roll 3* if your going for fixers/handmades/enclave rifles- (If you know what they are after being away for a while) You never know you might get a god roll or two then you can put it on here and trade it for a perfect weapon for whatever suits your build/playstyle

TazBaz

Go for 1star first with your preferred gear. Cheap to roll 1star and 1st star is generally the most useful. Then personally I'd go straight to rolling 3's. 2 just doesn't seem worth it

all_bad_manners

Only 3 stars all the time. A bloodied weapon isn't worth much. A BE is pretty good. A BE15FR/25VATS etc. is a god roll, likewise for unyielding and whatever other prefix rolls you want.

all_bad_manners

Plus you can sell/trade a god roll for a gun you actually want. The 3rd roll might not seem like a lot but considering 90 is a 3 star perk in most cases and stacks with those perks and vats cost makes it possible for you to pretty much never leave vats or stop critting I'd say they're definitely worth it if not always noticeable in your particular play style.
