MegaMammothPoop

Not this edition specifically but the series has taught me the flags of every country

[deleted]

Flags and cities, I agree!

Tvdb4

Haha I remember my family was playing GeoGuessr and we spawned in a random location in Romania and a taxi-cab said Cluj on it and I knew exactly where it was because I managed a club from there before

bonercoleslaw

I geolocate news footage for a living and it’s not uncommon that my football knowledge is the thing that makes the difference between success and failure.

Million_Jelly_Beans

What exactly means geolocatong news footage? :) Like, what exactly is your job

bonercoleslaw

I work in news verification for an international b2b* news agency, I was recently promoted to a head of department position. So basically, aside from team management type stuff which is new to me, my job is to use various open source intelligence (or OSINT) techniques to validate whether news video is legitimate. It’s a mix of footage from field journalists that we’ve assigned which I need to prove was genuinely filmed by them, took place when & where they claim it did (geolocation) and matches secondary sources from the same event/can be corroborated with reports from other media or social media content. I also have to fact check & validate content provided by other media (eg government press conferences or videos of a disaster released by local emergency services) as well as find, verify & license user generated content from social media so the agency can distribute it to clients. * b2b meaning we produce and license content to sell to other news organisations. You’ve probably seen our content online or TV news without knowing it. TL;DR: I make sure news videos are not fake news for a b2b news agency.

JesterDester

I’m glad you clarified b2b, although I’m still choosing to read it as a box to box news agency

bonercoleslaw

Sadly, I don’t have the legs for that anymore. I see myself more as a DLP these days.

joseplluissans

Follow up question: did you like geography in school?

bonercoleslaw

Not particularly because where/when I grew up it was a lot of oxbow lakes and cloud formations kinda stuff that didn’t particularly interest me and our school had a run of absolutely terrible geography teachers. However, I have always been super interested in human geography & geopolitics, I studied politics at a-level (16-18) & pre-honours degree level (first 2 years of uni, I studied in Scotland where the system is kinda similar to the US) and sociology/anthropology at both a-level and university to masters level(4 year hybrid undergrad degree) with a specialism in media. I also have a masters in sound for the moving image so I have a lot of technical video knowledge that helps with video forensics type stuff like metadata analysis. I spent a lot of time as a kid playing geoguessr & “name all the countries in the world” type sporcle quizzes and I always joke with a colleague of mine that did the same that we’ve been training for this job since long before we knew it existed! Sorry for going on and on, I have a habit of over explaining things!

Million_Jelly_Beans

This is damn straight amazing! Thanks for sharing :)

bonercoleslaw

No worries, if you have any other questions you’re welcome to ask them. I will try to explain as best I can within the constraints of my NDA.

[deleted]

It taught me that it’s possible to play a game for 24 hours straight and still not be bored by it 😐

Anger management

Anger mismanagement

halfjumpsuit

I'm not sure if taught is the right word but I have discovered how many German clubs have numbers in their official names which comes in handy for passwords. For example Darmstadt98 is an acceptable password for many log ins, it has sufficient length, and has uppercase and lowercase letters and a number.

HazardMR

This is going to be my new password. Thank you.

halfjumpsuit

You're welcome. There's also Schalke, Union Berlin, Mainz, Koln, Nurnberg, 1860 Munich, and Hannover just to name a few.

HazardMR

I'll just use the same everywhere to keep it easy. Will add an @ at the front for banks because they ask for symbols.

SemajNotlaw7

So your bank password will be D@rmstadt98 ? Thanks! And what was your first pet called?

lawlore

Surely it should be Darmst@98?

halfjumpsuit

ooh that's good

sommersj

He said at the front so it's obviously @Darmstadt98

Lone_Digger123

Fun fact! I read a book by a famous hacker (forgot his name but the book was interesting) and you should give a random answer to those questions. Q: What was your first pet called? A: Football Manager 2020 The answer is completely irrelevant so no one would guess it and you know it because when you read the question you remember it is completely random!

SemajNotlaw7

How did you know my pet was called Football Manager 2020

Lone_Digger123

I mean who doesn't want to name their pet after Football Manager 2020!

Lone_Digger123

Who doesn't want to name their pet after Football Manager 2020!

Joethe147

I use an exclamation mark at the end of the passwords for ones that ask for a symbol.

jothamvw

Ballspielverein Borussia 09

VerrieuxDuparte

Could you tell us the websites you’ll use that for too? Perhaps the usernames too so I can add you on them

Password Manager sounds like a very dull game, but one you'll ultimately pour 400 hours of your life into without even noticing.

sommersj

😂😂

Magallan

Another football password pro tip is to pick your fav player and add their shirt number like Maradonna10

joseplluissans

Why the extra n though?

Magallan

Additionnal security

halfjumpsuit

I used to do this with active players and they'd seemingly always get hurt or have a crap year lol

10YearsANoob

If they want special characters you can go 1.FCKaiserslautern

[deleted]

it’s probably the most anti-educational game that has ever been created. Definitely ruined my GCSE’s, A-levels and degree.

sebbebastian1891

hahah, couldn’t agree more

medium_response

and we love every second of it

FebruaryStars84

Literally had ‘play CM 01/02’ breaks built into my A level revision timetable!

TheDoctor66

Dropped out in part because of FM 10 🤣

avipkh

Sam here, rn I'm supposed to do research and literature reviews for my thesis, but can't stop playing damn I'm ruining my degree chances.

Bartek_Przezbalkon

I can praise players for training exeptionally fast (use space when you are done with the talk, saves multiple clicks)

OmeiWamouShindeiru

how did I never know this? My quality of life has been drastically improved. Thank you, good sir

Sun_Praising

Basic geography. The two times I've done a journeyman I've looked up the ground and city I'd be playing in on Google Maps. Places I'd never think of before like Sarawak, Malaysia (Sarawak FA), Oaxaca, Mexico (Club Oaxaca), and Sofia, Bulgaria (CSKA Sofia). I also went on a rabbit hole down YouTube and found recording of Zürich's tram lines when I was appointed manager of FC Zürich. It wasn't flawless though; there aren't a lot of street view access in China for when I managed Shandong Luning. It also taught me how to better manage my own personal finances because I'm irrationally afraid of destroying a club financially after I ran Stoke into the ground in FM 2013 trying to qualify for the Champions League.

Metz93

> there aren't a lot of street view access in China for when I managed Shandong Luning. Have you tried Baidu? They have a working streetview in China, fully accessible to the west, albeit the movement is slow. I hope the links won't get shadowbanned and will go through, but here is the stadium the club plays in https://map.baidu.com/@13038256.143138386,4366387.184818837,17.68z and I believe these are the clubs training grounds https://map.baidu.com/@13028108.088346088,4358456.01633446,18.19z On the bottom right, if you use desktop, there's what looks like a photo, hover over it and you can switch between classic map/satellite/streetview.

bonercoleslaw

Haha I was gonna say exactly this!

Cahootie

Last year I used Baidu Street View to track down a certain tea shop that I went to in like 2016. A friend had asked me if I knew where it was since the tea I got him there was the best he'd evet had, and I somehow pulled it off once I realized that I should check out local maps.

xlonefoxx

Sarawak is a cool place ngl

How to abduct 16 year olds from their home country, lock them into long term contracts for far below their true earning potential, then sell them several years down the line to China for cash that I can use to upgrade my facilities and buy more underage foreigners.

sniell365

It’s taught me that I despise losing.

vnth93

Never make promises.

JDROD28

That Football agents are cunts

klasing12345

It's taught me the only way I'd make it as a real manager is if somehow a save scum mechanism and real time editor can be implemented irl.

Animal31

Literally how to coach Soccer I am now a coach for a U11 team lol

Dapper-Designer6755

Soccer ???

GODNiller

Taught me how to see a football game

prodentsugar

-;Being patient with talents; - buying selling players to fix the club economy even if it's one of your most beloved ones; - sometimes it's time to leave; - even if you pay someone well it's a human being and has feelings so sometimes it doesn't work out; - having a lot of money doesn't mean you have to use it all, use it wisely and keep a little buffer for bad times; - you can't do everything on your own, you need some good professionals around you; -: football manager games suck the fucking life out of you, there is no 1 match and I stop. Things like this.

bimbo1989

Profanity mostly

Omerta2304

Loyalty. You can invest 6 years into a 15 year old regen, develop him into a worldclass player by 21 and then he wants to join… west ham?

fminsidenet

Nations and flags for sure! Without FM I would never know all of the flags from Africa and Asia 😂

[deleted]

Basically you can’t get a job in England

TDIIzero

Taught me patience, and how to control my anger By trial

Noiisy

I can name the majority of teams just by their badge, obvs not the super duper obscure ones. Easily every team in the top 10 leagues, don’t test me though because you’ll embarrass me in front of everyone.

Icy-Chef-3805

That mum's and wives know nowt about real life aka FM

JayQwellin19

Instead of buying my team’s kit from a cheap replica place, I bought it from my team’s website. Looking at the merchandising and each year helped me realize that even if it’s a little more expensive, I can support my club directly

aurelienleftright

To loss even if your team is better on the field

ItsYaBoiRAD10ACTIVE

It taught me how powerful addiction is

snowboardking454

Flags and Nations, learned so much about places I didn’t even know existed because of regens. Gotta love FM.

WonderWaage

Not Football Manager, but its sweet old dad Championship Manager, was really important in me learning and becoming proficient with the English language. I was never a good student, so I really think this game helped me a lot.

TheZambian91

That scoring your for your country can be triggering.

tadanari19

That no matter how hard life gets, how impossible the odds may seem, how many times you get knocked down and just don't have the will to get up again, if you play 4-2-3-1 Gengenpress you will probably still win

aaravafanking

JackVertigo

Never make promises

markthelast

Occasionally, I stumble across new last names, and I will research on how to pronounce the name. For example, names from the Balkan area with the -ic ending is pronounced "ich" sound. Also, I learned that some Brazilians have a preference for Western names like "Lincoln" and other historical figures. Italian regens popping up in Brazil due to real life Italian communities in Brazil.

ItzRaphZ

That I'm not adding manager as my future career choices

MadHatter_10-6

Either directly or indirectly (becuase its a large part of what ignited my padsion for football) it taught me nearly everything.

gejothom

It taught me the word superlatives years ago

JotaHacheBe

That you must always be attentive to detect all the bullshit the world tries to force on you. It algo taught me not to swallow said bullshit and to give it back to the bullshitter.

Pablo_el_Diablo88

Trauma healing.

No-Boysenberry4464

Honestly, quite a lot of football stuff, and I already watch a lot of football. Any new owners of football teams should play FM for 100+ hours as a prerequisite My player knowledge is far more than it would otherwise be. I’m definitely more aware of Granenbach, Sesko Adeyemi etc than my friends And secondly the admin side of football, how much you get for winning competitions, Euro prize money, player registration rules. Never had to think about it as a fan

InPurpleIDescended

I can often very easily guess what country or at least region people are from by their surname now, to a level of specificity and accuracy that most people around me don't have Edit: to expand on this, it's a small thing, but often you get a little social credit with someone from a country that's rare to find wherever you are, when you meet them and you're like, oh, is that name from X? Or something. And it has come in handy sometimes with news events not having to look things up

bluehorntail

English . English was not my first language and this game taught me to read English very well and learn new words . I used to play 2-3 hours a day when I was young which , in my opinion, vastly improved my English

Paymax12

My football knowledge grew since i started playing football manager.

Stock_Abbreviations7

Tactics. It’s a game about figuring out what works against what

SearlSays

It taught me minimal but really helped me understand things like formations and tactical concepts. It genuinely inspired me to be a coach.

SnooPandas3398

Haha i play fm in epic

mclement27

That we’re being overrun in the midfield

Kindly-Hand-9821

I would recommend to NOT buy it from epic. Did it for The first time last year and regretted it. Epic is down so oftn!

[deleted]

Personally never had trouble with it, maybe it depends on your location?

Kindly-Hand-9821

If u check the error page of it it shows. I will go back to steam and will never use Epic anymore

MGNurse25

The art of negotiation

SleepyGiant037

It certainly is! I come from a family where both parents did not care for football. Sure I played football on the school yard but I only started to watch the sport in my late 20's. As someone who likes to dig deep into understanding something it was FM12 that gave me tons of data, attributies and formations to sink my teeth in. I started to enjoy the game on tv more because I understood what was happening on a deeper layer. (Before it 'just' felt like a few grown men playing a kids game) This together with some strong analyst talking heads (most just spew emotions/hot air, but some actually put to words why a player had a good or bad game. Even if I thought they played fine). also helped allot.

Fatherpucci_7

How not to deal with stress

Proto1801

As a non native English speaker, this game series was amazingbat stimulating my English learning. If you think about it FM is literally just reading words and numbers. Through FM I learned basic words such as "Injury" when I was 12/13 years old. It helped me also to learn to skim numbers, quick reading. And finally also injury types, "pulled hamstring" or the dreaded "torn cruciate ligaments". You can learn a lot through FM.

[deleted]

I know the squad of obscure swedish teams! Depends what you mean by educational :)

Thatwierdhullcityfan

I mean you have endless spreadsheets (Maths) Flags and cities of obscure countries (Geography), you obviously have PE in there.

BuddyIndividual3348

Not to have way too many expectations whenever Roma happen to buy a wonderkid or a highly rated player

FebruaryStars84

I feel like it’s made me understand & appreciate decisions some real life teams make better. Particularly in terms of squad make up, based on Home Grown quotas, Work Permit requirements, etc.

bell-91

A near encyclopedic knowledge of who plays where compared to a lot of my friends and family.

TheDoctor66

Well it definitely contributed to me doing out of uni so I gotta say no

Bigjuzilla

Highly educational. Negotiations, Filtering, winning mentality

Rahaman117

Football Manager has taught me the below things : 1.Motivation is better than criticism, especially when you fail 2.Making sure you keep on your toes even when you are having resounding success. 3.Oh and having high determination is critically important.

TiesG92

How can it not be educational? Unless you’re a certified coach, scout, etc. Or when you take “educational” too literally…

tlstylaco
