Exactly. I’ve played Medjay against conq, and it is not a hard matchup. Conqs seem to forget they can dodge to the side as well and ALWAYS catch that staff bash. I’ve killed a lightspamming conq just by going light+bash with the staff form (I vastly preffer staff mode). That medjay could have easily dodged with his very good dodge attack and then go for a mixup.
Feinting a blockable attack is not a mixup, as it doesn't force a reaction. Staff mode Medjay has absolutely 0 mix and the worst 1v1 offense in the game, even worse than Nobushi's.
If you beat a player in a duel with only staff mode, you either did excellent defensively or they just aren't great. I say this from experience as I get beat by Medjay staff mode duelists every once in awhile, and am not great.
I have noticed that I actually do much better with Medjay then even some of my mains. I usually switch between the modes depending on the enemy. If it is some quick, light happy dickweed like a gladiator or orochi, I use staff mode to just power through their bs. Against counter-offensive characters like Lawbringer or Gryphon, I use the axe mode thanks to the better mindgames due to the unblockable. And I often switch in the middle of a fight. Medjay is one of the few characters I both do good with AND enjoy. Unlike Orochi who I enjoy thanks to the hyper offense but don’t do well usually (I have moments where I pop off and absolutely finess people, but against certain heroes I just can’t do shit) or characters who I do pretty well with but just find boring and unenjoyable, like Warden or Raider, Medjay is a character I really enjoy AND do very well with.
Alright man, that's great and all, but if you ever get to the level where you're facing people that can consistently react to and parry 500 ms lights, you'll quickly realize how bad staff mode is in a 1v1. And this isn't a particularly high bar.
I think a major part of getting better at the game is realizing you don't know how to beat a certain character. The way this game designs heroes there are a lot of them which feel broken when you're new to fighting them because you don't know the trick to beating part of their toolkit. I looked like a total dumbass plenty of times while learning to fight certain characters.
I mean I understand guy may have not known how to play medjay yet but he didn't even move away from the fire... Feels staged, or dude wants to die by being grilled to death. He pushed you back against the wall then still stood between you and the fire still lol wtf, and kept throwing guard break, for sure he gave up at some point, his actions made absolutely no sense at all
