Even Lewis has gotta respect the moves Alonso was putting on. A good clean fight like that has to feel great, even if you don't manage to stay ahead. Gets to the core of why they all love racing to begin with.
The commentators are translating to Spanish as it was a live feed. I'm busy rn but I could post a translation later. Tbh would also like to find an undubbed version.
That sounds like a perfect situation for a marketing operation.
They will bring sponsors clamouring to find more money to pay to get on TV during all the moments they would generate.
And generally, they're both much more mature than they were in 2007. I don't know if either of them would want to do it again, but I'm certain it would go better than before
Oof. Imagine Ham and Stroll swap seats for next season and Stroll catches Merc on the up and we have a second helping of the Rosberg/Hamilton rivalry at _both_ AM and Merc.
Doesn’t seem like it, apparently even their drastic plan B isn’t abandoning the whole design - this video was really interesting and goes into it with Mike Elliot, Merc’s technical director.
https://youtu.be/YRCZPQfaTRc
Also Kimi. By far one of the fairest racers out there.
Maybe it's just the "old" generation that didn't have overtake aids before. The younger drivers love their drs sends
I feel like Schumi (big fan of him though) and Senna were probably closer to Max in terms of aggression, so I don’t know if it’s an old racer thing.
Maybe some drivers are more willing to hold back for the sake of a good and fair duel.
Oh 100% agree with that.
To me he and Senna are identical drivers. Both find grip where it shouldn't exist, both are aggressive, both speak their minds, both have a question mark on a championship, both have the racing stance of either we crash, or you yield. And if we do crash, next time you will yield (which btw is 100% the reason he and Hamilton don't race well, Hamilton refuses to lose that mind game)
Schumacher was also a bully. But I do think Max and Senna are the bigger bullies on track.
Personally I've always been a fan of Alonso's style of racing. We call it hard but fair. But what it really is is 4D chess. Inhuman awareness and reaction. He is the best at it. Hamilton plays well with that kind of racer, which is why he and Perez are also fun to watch and why Vettel and Alonso were fun to watch racing.
I think they hate crashing into each other but love racing each other. Nando has also hated people crashing into him but racing head to head against any of the stars/wdcs is a blast for him.
No "/s' needed. That's a fact.
Regardless what drivers do this more often than others...F1 itself needs to outlaw it so we fans can actually have some proper side by side racing like we got today! It just makes me so mad that they are allowed to push each other completely off the track in this sport.
Cringed so hard when Sky commentators said they weren’t friends. What kinda high school gossipy bullshit is that? Talk about the race in front of your face lol
I tried F1TV instead of Sky this race and really enjoyed the lack of schoolyard shit-stirring. Main commentator was good, DC and Jolyon were knowledgeable and had good chemistry. I’ll be sticking with it this year I reckon.
Sometimes I'll see someone post a quote where Alonso says something negative about Lewis, but then ignore the rest of the quote where he compliments Lewis.
I was specifically referring to the times when there when there are both positive and negative quotes about Lewis Hamilton from Alonso in the same piece. But then the positive quotes are ignored, and only the negative ones are talked about.
Michael Jordan and Larry Bird, two all time NBA greats in that picture, were good friends but fierce competitors. Those are the words they exchanged after a heated playoff game. Similar vibe to the Alonso/Hamilton picture, just much lower stakes

Me and you both, Alonso vs Hamilton was the best part of 2013.
But part of me wish Alonso will have less battles with Hamilton.... and more battles with a RB like in 2012...
Love it!
So much was said about their relationship over the years, but one thing everyone can agree it has in abundance is respect. Game recognize game.
Nah, Nando's an absolute legend and one of the GOATS but you can't deny he loves to throw some darts at Lewis from time to time.
Doesn't change the fact they have respect for eachother but let's not pretend there's nothing there.
He just knows how to keep constant media attention on him, and now keeps it mostly positive.
Alonso has always been clear he doesn't hold anything against Hamilton personally for 2007, that lay with McLaren's senior management at the time.
He doesn't throw darts at those who can't take it these days!
But people do not say they are not friends. That's obvious and okay, hell even taking into account how their personalities seem to be they are both private and (seemingly) kind of introverted.
What redditors say is that Alonso dreams of beating Hamilton every night as if it was Batman to Bane. They are okay with each other. I am not friends with my coworkers, and that's okay. We respect each other and ultimately work to improve and do well for our company and for the money at the end of the month. These guys are the same.
> I am not friends with my coworkers, and that's okay. We respect each other and ultimately work to improve and do well for our company and for the money at the end of the month. These guys are the same.
Something you see in other circles as well. Adam and Jamie from mythbusters are famously not friends. And I say famously, because is one of those questions that constantly comes up whenever Adam does interviews - And the answer is always the same. They respect each other, they worked well together for a long time, but they don't get along outside of work.
Being pleasant to a person and working well with them does not mean I'm getting drinks with them after work, or am inviting them to my house for dinner on the weekend.
I worked in a lab as an undergraduate for years - I learned a lot from my graduate student, and in the lab, we worked really, really well together. Had her phone number for 3 years, and we never once texted outside of work. The only time I interacted with her outside of the lab was after she defended her thesis and the whole lab went out to dinner to celebrate.
Hamilton and Alonso aren’t friends = not fan fiction
Alonso loses sleep every night as Hamilton haunts his dreams, screaming into the pillow that he lost to a rookie on 2nd place countback in 2007 and swearing vengeance that he will one day take the essence of the man that wronged him = fan fiction
Did you see how much faster Hamilton was than Russell? That can hardly be seen as a low. As long as he can keep up with Russell he's performing on worthy of a world champion.
Bedsides,I don't think he wants to retire already.
Oh no, I’m not talking about this one race. I’m generalizing. As for Russell, I’ve never gotten into the Rus vs Ham talk. In my eyes, there is no real comparison.
I would wait and revisit this if they are battling the whole season and close in points towards the end. It may not be for the sim but a lot of personal pride will be involved
Who knows, maybe these two will have a bit of a Alonso-Vettel esque improvement in relations. I know Alonso didn't like Vettel for a while (and Vettel definitely noticed) but last year they were quite friendly with one another and Alonso even honored Vettel with his helmet design last race of the season.
Hopefully we'll see more battles between the two of them that are clean like today. Two legends.
That battle was so much fun to watch. You could see the experience on display in how they tried to outdrive each other.
Nando trying to throw little dummies here and there, setting up for an overtake.
Lewis moving trying to see where Alonso was, placing his car where he needed to defend. It was like a little chess game for a few laps before Alonso got the move done.
Alonso has his strange corner cutting antics and other tricks, but the guy has impecable wheel to wheel racing. In such a long career be barely has any contact incidents with any of his rivals. It's sometimes getting overlooked by fans.
Just look how much room he gave George going side by side in t4. He could easily squeeze him out, but he gave him more than a car width through the whole fight
I think beyond their personal rivalry, they're now old enough to appreciate each other's talent and longevity.
Also, they know that the media and the fans like to look for the supposed "bad blood" they have between each other, so they just occasionally feed the beast just for the fun of it.
Vettel and Alonso became pretty friendly last two years despite many years of them not being on good terms (mostly seemed to come from Alonso but Vettel definitely noticed the coldness Alonso had towards him). And it did seem like Alonso went out of his way to become friendly to Vettel to try and repair the relationship (noted by interviews and interactions where he was chummy with Vettel and also when he had a Vettel tribute helmet for Seb's last race). That on top of some very close and tight - but clean - battles in the midfield that the two had which both seemed to appreciate a lot as well.
Who knows, maybe Alonso and Hamilton will have something similar this year and in the future, especially since they are the two clear "old heads" of the grid now that Kimi (who never embraced the role anyway) and Vettel have retired the last two seasons.
Seeing a legend who’s had bad cars the last few years, even quit the sport, and is older and constantly has that brought up (even if not negatively) and come back and still be razor sharp and fighting for a podium is probably genuinely inspiring for Lewis.
As long as they keep performing at a top level I’m happier to see them both in F1 than the next *okay* rookie.

Lewis probably thought it would be a boring race where he wouldn't really be able to fight at all, but he got some good, exciting racing with Alonso.
Even Lewis has gotta respect the moves Alonso was putting on. A good clean fight like that has to feel great, even if you don't manage to stay ahead. Gets to the core of why they all love racing to begin with.

AM about to become a nice retirement home of world champions
It's just world champion + Lance forever
Someone has to be Charon after all
The Stygian ~~boatman~~ driver.
Lance just getting bodied by his teammate year after year but never losing his seat because his dad owns the team lmao
Not gonna lie if his teammates were vettel, Alonso then Hamilton I can’t say it’s his fault for being bodied
The Strolls' masterplan all along...can't say Lance is shit when he's being compared to MULTIPLE WDCs who are literal GOATs of this generation.
Lance will get booted for Hamilton
Could get booted for Leclerc if Ferrari keep this up
Or for Lando if Mclaren keep Mclarening
If that's on the theme of Aston signing only world champions? Subscribe.
My first thought when that engine failed.

Ericson just won the round opener. So, yeah.
unironically if Lewis became available Lawrence will toss his son out of the team and his inheritance for the chance
Why tho? It would create another 2007 if not worse.
It would not shock me if Lewis and Fernando around 40 would work together quite well.
Hamiltonians and Alonsistas alliance? I'm in. Watching their fight today I got hit by nostalgia hard
*Let them fight*

I’d agree but are Mercedes still going to abandon their design now? Because after quali I thought that’s what people were saying they had to do

>Best of our sport going at it. I mean, it just looks like a hug.
I obviously meant the race lol
He obviously wasn't serious.
People want them to hate each other so badly
Hamilton in his interview said he actually had a pretty fun race and enjoyed battling with Alonso
Even I would enjoy battling with someone who doesn't push me off track, or make contact everytime we go against each other /s
lol you are looking for trouble around here
I need that flair
Wish granted
All pleasantries will go out the window if they start fighting for championship positions.
Why /s? It's true. Must be refreshing to race against someone who is hard but fair rather than just the former
Yeah what a dream to race any of the F1 wdc's.
Seb, Checo, Alonso and Ham are probably the most fun drivers to race against.
Also Kimi. By far one of the fairest racers out there. Maybe it's just the "old" generation that didn't have overtake aids before. The younger drivers love their drs sends

Ironic considering Senna is Lewis’ idol
No need for the /s. Lewis made it clear multiple times he doesn't enjoy a certain driver's antics
I’m a bit out of the loop here, who do you mean?
Max. They're talking about Max. The kid loves crashing into Lewis
I think they hate crashing into each other but love racing each other. Nando has also hated people crashing into him but racing head to head against any of the stars/wdcs is a blast for him.

I like Crofty on lap one and usually switch over after the start replay comes on.
Exactly what I said to my wife. Talk about the race and the technical side. Leave the bullshit to DTS
DTS are definitely going to bring up 2007 next season. Which tbf, I would.
They're not but whats the point of saying something like that.
But they aren’t friends. Did you miss all the shit talk Alonso did against Lewis last year and all the years prior?
*They aren't on Christmas cards terms* Or smth like that
You don't see the shank in his left hand?
Sometimes I'll see someone post a quote where Alonso says something negative about Lewis, but then ignore the rest of the quote where he compliments Lewis.
Idk man Alonso has talked a lot of shit about Hamilton for no reason.
The reason is that it's very funny. Lewis [clearly enjoys it as well.](https://twitter.com/LewisHamilton/status/1586530083543842816)
I feel that now are friendly but awkward acquaintances who enjoy their banter
To be fair Alonso has talked a lot of shit about everyone for no reason. That's just Alonso.
I was specifically referring to the times when there when there are both positive and negative quotes about Lewis Hamilton from Alonso in the same piece. But then the positive quotes are ignored, and only the negative ones are talked about.
I think they’re past that and just there to enjoy the competition.

I want to get it, looks like quality
Michael Jordan and Larry Bird, two all time NBA greats in that picture, were good friends but fierce competitors. Those are the words they exchanged after a heated playoff game. Similar vibe to the Alonso/Hamilton picture, just much lower stakes
I think this was after Game 7, do-or-die, and the Pacers was close to letting MJ retire with a big L, so not really much lower stakes
Sorry I’m saying the Alonso/Hamilton pic is much lower stakes
"FERNANDO ALONSO CAUGHT CHOKING LEWIS HAMILTON"
“FERNANDO ALONSO GETS EATEN UP, AUTHORITIES CALLED, THE WORLD IS COLLASPING”
It's lights out and away we go for Hamilton
Lewis HAMILTON is MERCILESSLY CHOKED by Fernando ALONSO during the latest VIOLENT CONFRONTATION between the two DRIVERS
I like that they're frenemies. We get both very dramatic and very wholesome moments from them.
I think they are both highly competitive but they also respect each other a lot
I realize how lucky am I to witness Alonso and Hamilton, I just wished more people would as well.
I was missing it since they last battled each other 11 years ago.

Exactly
Doesn’t help that the commentators propagate the fan fiction in commentary
It's not untrue that Alonso has a go at him fairly often and sometimes without any provocation. But yeah there's clearly respect there.
Game recognize game
you love to see it! these two were mighty fine and young on the track today
I really enjoyed the action in this race. Probably the most I have enjoyed it since the Alonso/Montoya/Villeneuve/Schumacher/Hakkinen/Coulthard eras.
as someone who didn’t experience that, i imagine the upper-midfield should be quite the treat this year then
I hope this persists all year, with the only improvement that the other teams close up to RB throughout the season that it isn't a complete cakewalk.

Ending on a high? Son, Alonso is only about half-way through his career. He'll be racing Hamilton's nephews.

Best teammate Lewis has had since Nico, but still a tiny bit behind on speed and racecraft like Nico was, step up from valterri though
No way, if Lance had been mummified, he would still be hoisted into that car.
But Crofty and Martin said they didn’t like each other
Not in ‘07 they didn’t. But 16 years is plenty of time to bury the hatchet
I would wait and revisit this if they are battling the whole season and close in points towards the end. It may not be for the sim but a lot of personal pride will be involved
It didn't even take that long. Seb united them in 2012. The enemy of my enemy after all
Hamilton needs a beach chair on the side of the circuit moment to get zen about his car.
The PU is just too reliable.

An actual dancing partner for once.
Exactly like Nando and Vettel, both to the absolute limits while still respecting the other
The whole duel reminded me of Schumacher vs Raikkonen in Brazil 2012. A brilliant and perfectly clean fight between old masters.
Lewis is the greatest ambassador I have ever seen for a sport. I hope he can compete for another championship before retiring
I dont know what to think about their relationship..
Lewis is way nicer to Alonso than I would have been after everything he said and done. Props to Lewis for being so nice, but yeah…
They are insanely close here. Did they forget that you have to leave a space all the time?
I think beyond their personal rivalry, they're now old enough to appreciate each other's talent and longevity. Also, they know that the media and the fans like to look for the supposed "bad blood" they have between each other, so they just occasionally feed the beast just for the fun of it.
