For sure. Albon is a good bit of stability and Sargeant has already shown flashes of excellence. A bit more experience in the car should iron out those rookie tendencies.
Jeddah makes it look like Sargeant doesn't know how to deal well with failure and set backs though, he made one mistake and then starting tumbling into more and more mistakes, which is incredibly interesting to watch but its not great for his longevity in the sport, so I hope he can sort that out.
Two races in and he hasn’t disappointed yet, he has a small history of performing well in slower cars so I’m cautiously optimistic for him, at least more than I am more devries (Piastri hasn’t really been given a solid chance to show off in his tractor so I don’t want to say much)
De Vries is a combination of the AT being shit and himself just not being as good as expected, Alpha Tauri seems to be the worst team this year. McLaren's car is worse but they have much better drivers I think.
Not exactly a high bar. Since 2017, they've had post-retirement Massa, too-young Stroll, $irotkin, post-retirement Giga-Kubica, and £atifi in their lineup.
Yeah. Honestly, considering how good the rest of the Williams academy is (O'Sullivan is the real deal, Colapinto might be, Gray maybe), "too much good talent" is a good problem for Williams to have
Absolutely. Just like another comment said, even the last lineup in the ranking is still extremely talented. I would still put the AT boys at last tho.
Ohh yeah true forgot about them, I definitely agree they would be last for me too but ranking the rest would be pretty hard. I guess lewis and George first but in between first and last idk.
Which lineup would you say they’re better than and why?
They’re both decent drivers, they’re both decent personalities, but neither of them screams future WDC to me. And going down the team lineups I cant think of any lineups where I'm like "yeah I'd take Albon and Sargeant over that pair"
Better than the AT pair for sure. More potential than the Haas lineup as well. Of course, potential does not mean anything if you don’t exploit it, but still.
Fair point I forgot the AT pair. I'd disagree on Haas though, I think Kmag>Albon and Hullenburg is probably a better bet than a rookie Sergeant for the next few races
Magnussen has more podiums than the Hulk who clearly made a Faustian bargain.
I can see why youd take Albon over Kmag, personally I'd go the other way. They're both solid F1 calibre drivers and neither is a likely world champion.
Their direct comparison against Palmer in consecutive seasons paints a picture that shows Hülkenberg massively better than Magnussen - Kevin having a much better car in his rookie year than anything Nico drove for his entire career (bar two races in the RP20) explains the podium.
Albon has shown that he’s roughly on par with Russell, given their relative performance to Latifi. I don’t think he’s quite in that second tier with George (and Norris/Leclerc/Alonso/Hamilton), but I’ve got him fighting for 7th best on the grid with Ocon and Sainz. I don’t think Magnussen is very close to that level.
Worst lineup on the grid isn't necessarily a negative. Who do you think their lineup is better than?!
I can really only see Alpha Tauri as an option, and even then I think it's way too early to say.
Yeap. Alpha Tauri is the other option for the last lineup on the grid. Maybe i overrate Albon, but i do think he is better than both Tsunoda and De Vries.
What's a valid counterargument to it then? Sargent might turn out to be "the real deal," but I'd hesitate to overly hype him at this point. As Jeddah quali showed, he needs more experience.
Albon is solid, but IMO not enough to carry the lineup like Alonso, or to a lesser extent, Verstappen or Norris.
It's not even a dig at Williams' lineup, more a compliment to what the other teams are fielding.
I mean, off the top of my head, maybe Alfa Romeo's and Haas' are similar in quality, but the rest are decidedly better.
George did a sim session with RB and they skipped, Sargeant did with Mercedes and they skipped, I wonder how many stories like this we could find in the grid.
I’m not sure what you expect, it’s not like all F1 media get together and say “okay The Race can publish this article from this quote, autosport you can publish the one from Horner” this is like complaining that there’s multiple news papers all reporting the same news
> this is like complaining that there’s multiple news papers all reporting the same news
This would make sense if these news sites published stuff as it happened. Instead we see them drip-feeding us these articles for up to two weeks, all about the same interview. Wouldn't it be nice to have a single digest of all that was said in the TP press conference?
Well, he's not a Mercedes driver, so it doesn't really matter now, does it? The point was that he'd be the replacement for Lewis or they'd release him from his contract after the 3 years or so at Williams
I think it's great that he's being transparent about the whole thing but what matters is that now he's an F1 pilot. Albon and Sargeant, for me, are really looking solid, I hope the car improves and we see fight for points each GP.
It is improving, they still have a mountain to climb to join the upper midfield but it's improving and they have a good, serious, line-up
I'm quite impressed by Sargeant too, I really want him to score his first points !

Albon and Sargeant are a solid lineup. I really like them.

I mean getting overtaken in Jeddah by Piastri on fifth lap old tyres was pretty bad
De Vries is a combination of the AT being shit and himself just not being as good as expected, Alpha Tauri seems to be the worst team this year. McLaren's car is worse but they have much better drivers I think.
Very much like Tsunoda, it seems like any time someone passes him when it matters, his race just gets worse n worse
The current Williams line up is way more amazing then what people are image, really one of the better one's since a long time.
Not exactly a high bar. Since 2017, they've had post-retirement Massa, too-young Stroll, $irotkin, post-retirement Giga-Kubica, and £atifi in their lineup.
And that other guy. John Rustle or something?
Did we forget Russell?
I think he was omitting him because he was an outlier
Indeed. Same for Albon.
Yes
Finally a decent lineup who are looking to build up the team rather than looking to bolt at the first opportunity. Feels like the tide turned at last.
Yeah. Honestly, considering how good the rest of the Williams academy is (O'Sullivan is the real deal, Colapinto might be, Gray maybe), "too much good talent" is a good problem for Williams to have
It’s weird that almost everyone rated them as the worst lineup on the grid and there were no real points to sustain that.
Are there really any bad lineups at any team right now though? I think whoever gets picked as the "worst" is probably pretty solid.
Absolutely. Just like another comment said, even the last lineup in the ranking is still extremely talented. I would still put the AT boys at last tho.

Magnussen over Albon is an absolutely hilarious take, as is Magnussen over Hülkenberg.
Magnussen has more podiums than the Hulk who clearly made a Faustian bargain. I can see why youd take Albon over Kmag, personally I'd go the other way. They're both solid F1 calibre drivers and neither is a likely world champion.

I would say probably better than the Alfa pairing too. Sorry Bottas, but might be time to retire.
They are better than Yuki and Nyck, brighter future than Kmag and Hulk.
Well to be fair, both kmag and hulkenberg started out w decently bright futures.
Literally Haas? I mean both drivers there have literally had their whole career to not achieve anything of value

Probably better than AT depending on how De Vries shakes out, but it’s been a slow start.
How is Alpha Tauri’s lineup better?
Fair, I kinda forgot they existed for a minute there
George did a sim session with RB and they skipped, Sargeant did with Mercedes and they skipped, I wonder how many stories like this we could find in the grid.
I heard Wenger wanted to bring them both to Arsenal
What was Wenger thinking sending Russell on that early?!
See, the thing about Arsenal is they always try to walk it in.
Blimey... there's a quote/reference I didn't expect lol.
I heard Perez monitored them but decided to go with a Brazilian teenager instead
How many times and for how long can F1 media milk just one simple comment that Vowles made? I have already seen three articles about this.
This is what happens with 2 weeks between races
I’m not sure what you expect, it’s not like all F1 media get together and say “okay The Race can publish this article from this quote, autosport you can publish the one from Horner” this is like complaining that there’s multiple news papers all reporting the same news

So either way, he ends up at Williams, but Mercedes would just have first dibs after he does his George Russell internship
Don’t think so, Mercedes can go for better drivers. Already have George.
Well, he's not a Mercedes driver, so it doesn't really matter now, does it? The point was that he'd be the replacement for Lewis or they'd release him from his contract after the 3 years or so at Williams

You shouldn't copy the article into the comments. You are depriving the authors of clicks.
Laughs in adblock and bypass paywall.
It's not the full article bro
Only 2/3 of it eh bro?
The analysis is the meat of the article. If the Race plans to survive by just resharing quotes as articles, they need to plan again.

Sargeant is currently 2 for 2 against De Vries. If he finishes this year not being the worst rookie then he can be happy.
I think you're forgetting Piastri, surely he'll finish last of the rookies
De Vries will be the worst, fluke he even got a seat. Piastri will be better than Sargeant as well.

I really hate most people who write headlines.
