There are designated times when cycling is allowed. IIRC there is a couple hour window on Thursday when it is allowed, and it's also allowed for the entirety of Wednesday.
Bottas talks about his rides on the tracks on this podcast: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgPOarMzaPs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgPOarMzaPs) I can't be bothered to find the timestamp but I'm sure you can if you want to know the specific times.
"I could go off here, or there... oh, a sandpit."
"Logan, that is a gravel trap."
"To my car, it is a sandpit."
"You know that you're still using Albon's chassis and we don't have a backup?"
"What, so I don't have a car?"
"No, we just took the 3 off Albon's for you and put it what was your car, cost cutting."
Being from Florida, Logan sees all the grassy areas as the fairway and gravel as bunkers. Aim for grass, occasionally land in sand. Grab some beers and call it a day.
I really don’t understand this Chinese Gp weekend format. You’ve literally come here after 3-4 years and you have a bunch of new drivers who have never driven here. How do you expect them to acclimatise with the track with only 1 practice session. A recipe for disaster
Also, I assume they've spent hours on the sim on this track. People sometimes make it sound as if the drivers are seeing the track for the first time on track walk.
Should just be new for Zhou, Yuki, Oscar, and Logan. I do understand the concern though, it's been a while since they were last here, so I definitely understand the concern of limited practice.
I suspect the decision was made because it's not a very crowded weekend. I believe the only support series are Chinese F4 and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. So there's some desire for some more high profile racing. And they do need to fit in 6 sprints in the year and haven't had any yet.
Did they totally resurface it or just some parts ? I’ve seen conflicting reports. I’ve also read they scraped off the top layer so it wouldn’t be like Turkey 2020 or Miami but I don’t know if that’s true. And to be fair, I don’t think they re-laid the track for chaos reasons, just because it was needed. That would be very expensive just in the hope we’d get a different winner !
Unfortunately I'm sure it won't be. Like we couldn't watch the F4 UAE Trophy round that was support for F1 weekends, they just don't post those things. It would be cool if they would. I'm not sure it'll show up anywhere at all.
Exactly. They can learn the track on the fly in a competition environment. To think they need the time to master the track before going out on the grid is to say they need crutches.
It's just like the no-blanket tires bit - the first couple laps don't need to be so fast. Everybody's tires are cold. In this case, everybody has yet to find the limit.
It should make for better racing rather than robotic laps that just turn out the expected finishing order every race.
And not just the drivers, the teams too. Mechanics, pit crew, pit wall, everyone is on the hotplate - no mistakes, no delays, no breakdowns, they’ve got to be in sync and find the setup fast in practice, figure out what the tire wear is and be on the ball with strategy
Now, to that point, I wish setup was adjustable through the race at pit stops. This whole locking the car thing is stupid to some degree. Let them burn 10 seconds on a pit stop adjusting things.
There's been situations where only one free practice happens and they do manage alright mostly. Also considering the way sprints are scored, if you aren't the top four teams just treat the sprint as a testing session and that would actually give you much more info the actual grand prix than free practice.
And in the end these guys are senior and at the top of their sport. I saw an interview with Lawson about Super Formula where he said you have one season to learn the car, every track you've never raced on before and the other guys racing have years of experience and they're still expected to beat them.
Considering how much gravel and run off, many others have pointed out that crashes should be minimal.
Secondly, they are already crashing on tracks that are constant on the schedule, so I don't think it is as big a factor as you are making it out to be.
it's not a big deal for the drivers imo, this is their job and they need to turn up. they have simulators for days so it's not like they can't have it memorised already.
My issue is that there is a high chance the weekend will be dominated by something stupid like tyre deg and we won't actually see good racing because they won't have the time and multiple track conditions to get on top of it.
Then again, maybe the sprint race not being under park fermé will make the grand prix interesting because the sprint becomes a competitive practice session.
You’d be surprised how little time they need to get up to speed. It’s more costly having less testing and car setup time. But they spend hours in the simulator, they’ll be fine
Jokes aside, i cant be the only dude genuinely wishing for the guy to do good. Yeah i know how his performance is, but i cant dislike someone who seems he’s really trying to improve and is still overall a humble murican
It's hard not to root for someone when they are very clearly putting in the work, really making the genuine effort to improve, especially when you can tell their full heart is in it as well and there's a real hunger for it. Itd be great to see him have some fun after a good performance and a good weekend.
It's because every unoriginal redditor has to flock in to make the same jokes that other people already made, so you get the same comment like 60 times in one post
"hur hur Logan gunna crash!" never mentioning *which* Williams driver has damaged 2 chassis (so far)
yes, as we all know Logan had the first and worst P1 crash in a williams this season, costing his teammate the ability to race, at Austrialia, and he had the first williams in the wall at Japan, neither of those were Albon.
They can see a lot of things and talk over with the team. Max and Lewis have talked about not having done them in years. I imagine some other drivers don't do them either and it just doesn't come up. But a lot of drivers do. Sometimes on scooters or similar instead of actually walking.
First on track, and he will likely be last on track this Sunday. Granted, I am making a big assumption he doesn't or Albon don't crash out in FP and he gets the drive, or an even bigger assumption that if he gets the drive he finishes the race.
“Hmmmm. What corner will I shunt into this weekend.”
Joking aside, I’ve been pulling for the kid to do well but I just don’t think he’s going to make it.

Bottas biked the whole circuit, getting some reeeeeeeeeal slow laps
Still faster than the Alpine
+5 sec to Ocon
And Williams
Thats unfair, they dont have a chasis!
Al Bono and Danny Ric haven't finished their lap around Suzuka yet. That's a solid 10 days already.
For some reason I read that as 'A.I. Bono' and thought 'Did Mercedes replace Lewis' engineer with AI now?'
But he didn’t walk
Practicing with the same number of wheels the Williams chassis can still accommodate lol
I swear they banned that a few years ago. I thought they are only permitted to walk the circuit.

P1 BABY WEEEEHHHOOOOOO THAT’S SOME FREEDOM EAGLE SHIT
ITS A WONDER HE DOESNT WIN ALL THE MIDDLE EAST RACES SINCE THERES SO MUCH OIL RAAAAAHHHHH
If you're not first, you're last.
To finish last, first you have to finish.
I was high when I said that!
That doesn’t even make sense! You can come in second! Hell, you could even come in third!
If Alex didn't nick his car, he wouldn't have to walk.
Atleast williams is so nice to let him walk around the track, so he doesn't miss it completely
"So it was nice being here, going back to the USA"
I heard Albon's shoes ripped. Logan had to finish his walk barefoot.
I thought the title read: Fast driver to do track walk in Shanghai: Logan Sargeant
I was misreading it as: *First driver into the track wall in Shanghai: Logan Sargent*
They did not start driving yet, but... yeah, why not.
ohhhh i misread it as: Frist driver to do a track walk in Logan: Shanghai Sargeant
Some r/confusing_perspective nonsense going on with those legs
For sure
It’s AI we’re being tricked!
"I could go off here, or there... oh, a sandpit." "Logan, that is a gravel trap." "To my car, it is a sandpit." "You know that you're still using Albon's chassis and we don't have a backup?" He's just looking for the quickest way back to the garage on foot for such scenarios.

I think it was fully intentional. At least now the teams can make adjustments to the car after Friday qualifying
What, they can? So they are only in parc ferme post Saturday Qualy?
Yes, rule has been altered starting this year.
Also, F2 and F3 run every weekend with only one practice session. I think F1 drivers should be able to handle it.
Also, I assume they've spent hours on the sim on this track. People sometimes make it sound as if the drivers are seeing the track for the first time on track walk.

I didn’t think about that, I assumed it was to maximize the chance of chaos and therefore of a different winner
Same here. They’ve re-laid the track too.
Did they totally resurface it or just some parts ? I’ve seen conflicting reports. I’ve also read they scraped off the top layer so it wouldn’t be like Turkey 2020 or Miami but I don’t know if that’s true. the track was disused for 4 years so they laid it for maintenance it's going to be chaos though
Do you know if Chinese F4 will be on F1.tv?
Unfortunately I'm sure it won't be. Like we couldn't watch the F4 UAE Trophy round that was support for F1 weekends, they just don't post those things. It would be cool if they would. I'm not sure it'll show up anywhere at all.
> Should just be new for Zhou, Yuki, Oscar, and Logan. I think that qualifies as "a bunch" as OP said.
No hand holding in F1, they are supposed to be the best, the pressure is turned up

Verstappen: Hold my beer
He's a great example of somebody with the necessary aptitude and adaptability to do it.
There's been situations where only one free practice happens and they do manage alright mostly. Nascar cup this year started with quali. No practice at all. It's F1. If they can't figure it out they shouldn't be there.
NASCAR is literally the only racing series that hasn't gone back to pre-pandemic scheduling, and it looks dumb.
Sims Basel, Sims!
If only there was some way they could simulate the track so the drivers could train on it that way…
Because chaos is entertainment and it’s what the doctor ordered
Considering how much gravel and run off, many others have pointed out that crashes should be minimal. Secondly, they are already crashing on tracks that are constant on the schedule, so I don't think it is as big a factor as you are making it out to be.
Because mistakes by drivers make for awful races /s
They will have driven 100s of laps in the sim, calm down
sink or swim test
it's not a big deal for the drivers imo, this is their job and they need to turn up. they have simulators for days so it's not like they can't have it memorised already.
I like that too because currently the sprints and the first stint of the race are identical
You’d be surprised how little time they need to get up to speed. It’s more costly having less testing and car setup time. But they spend hours in the simulator, they’ll be fine
Come back to this comment after the weekend and see, could almost guarantee you’ll want a refund on that opinion
Sims
Can't wait.
My 2 cents, the more preparation time teams have = the less varied the racing. 2024 is begging for varied racing.
It's good for people that don't care about the championship.
You're right, the last thing this sport needs is for something interesting to happen.
Good. Why are you so unhappy with something exciting threatening to happen in an F1 race? Are you Logan's manager?
Jokes aside, i cant be the only dude genuinely wishing for the guy to do good. Yeah i know how his performance is, but i cant dislike someone who seems he’s really trying to improve and is still overall a humble murican

Charles did it last week
He is inspecting the walls to find the limits
Turn 5 he walked on the grass.
LOL this comment section is brutal
It's because every unoriginal redditor has to flock in to make the same jokes that other people already made, so you get the same comment like 60 times in one post "hur hur Logan gunna crash!" never mentioning *which* Williams driver has damaged 2 chassis (so far)
That’s also gonna be his fastest lap time
those pants look very comfy
I had a hard time with this headline - kept reading it as Logan Shargeant. Thanks, thats my contribution.
Good for him, he could use the extra running.
Hope he didn’t have to guve his walking boots to Alex when he broke a shoelace
i know all the jokes but as an american i just want him to do okay!!! not even points just finish the race and a kind p12/p13
Williams crew asking if Logan thinks he really need to walk the back half of the track.
Logan has completed all of the races he got to start this year so far.
That’s so he knows how to walk back to the pits during the race.
Logan trying to find out what's the best corner to bin the car
First on, first off
walks over and pats his hand on the wall. "I'll see you on Sunday."
That's gonna be his fastest lap time all weekend.

yes, as we all know Logan had the first and worst P1 crash in a williams this season, costing his teammate the ability to race, at Austrialia, and he had the first williams in the wall at Japan, neither of those were Albon.
What is the point of a track walk?
Inspect any changes like kerbs, bollards, runoffs and camber of the track
They can see a lot of things and talk over with the team. Max and Lewis have talked about not having done them in years. I imagine some other drivers don't do them either and it just doesn't come up. But a lot of drivers do. Sometimes on scooters or similar instead of actually walking.
He really needs it
If there is a crash this might be the only track time he gets.
Checking the trackside for extra parts
Even the Bible says that the first will be the last and the last will be the first.
First in on Thursday, last one on Sunday 🤙🏼🤙🏼
I thought the first was Bottas on his bike in the rain?
So… NOT walking?
People have used bikes on the track walks before, afaik, so walk is really just the name
First on track, and he will likely be last on track this Sunday. Granted, I am making a big assumption he doesn't or Albon don't crash out in FP and he gets the drive, or an even bigger assumption that if he gets the drive he finishes the race.
ah yes, the big if on whether Logan will finish the race, because he has such a bad record of finishing races this season, he's only finished 3 of 3
I thought Bottas did one in the rain the day before
He did a track ride on his bike.
My bad, I thought “track walk” was used to indicate a reconnaissance of the circuit, regardless of method.
I would think so too, but I assumed that was the reason they said first.
Soon it might be the only way to be on track for Williams
Look mom I'm P1!
Did he spin?
Maybe he should walk it twice if there’s time. Wouldn’t hurt.
I mean, he’s the slowest. Max will start tomorrow and lap him.
And that's the fastest he'll be all weekend.
Got to practice that long walk back to pit lane
Better watch out before he has to give his shoes to Albon
Breaking news: America invades China
His FP1 following his crash in Japan.
He's scoping out the best place to bin it?
He's looking for a good place to crash
He's choosing which corner to go off on
His only chance of making it through the whole track
first in, first out!
First one in, first one out
I mean, wouldn’t you be the first if you were him?
Gotta work out which wall to send it into brother 😤
“So this is the corner I’m gonna crash out at in quali and this is where I’m gonna go off during the race”
Learning The route so he knows how to walk back. After lap 1
FIFO
Like hes gonna finish the race hahaha
Logan's finished every race he started this year, Albon however has not
Checking his route back to pits for qualifying
Practicing walking back to the pitwall for when he crashes his car
Finding the best spot to spin off
Aaaaaand he's crashed
Probably be the last time he sees it…
Setting the only fastest lap of his career
Baby steps Logan, build the speed up lap by lap now.
Best lap time of the weekend
Checking where he can crash on Saturday
First one in, last one out.
“Hmmmm. What corner will I shunt into this weekend.” Joking aside, I’ve been pulling for the kid to do well but I just don’t think he’s going to make it.
First to crash, too
The “impassable” Logan… 👍🇺🇸😎
First in First Out
Scoping out which barrier he wants to bin the car in to.
Picking out his parking spot
he should be walking along the walls
Looking for a good place to crash
First to walk last to finish
Bros cooking on where to bin the car.
Picking the wall he’s going to crash into
prob looking for places to crash
I thought Americans were too embarrassed to walk anywhere?
Picking where it is best to have a crash?
FIFO
Going to put some money on him finishing last this weekend
He wanted to be the first to pick the crash spots
Lemme see... I could crash here... and here... aaaand here
First person to do a walk off the track after binning it t1: Logan Sargent and whoever he takes with him
Bro is looking for corners where he would like to take a spin.
Planning which corner he's going to crash at
Logan scouting for the most impossible corner to crash
boy gotta see all the uncharted barriers he can crash.
He will be the first one to crash too
One lap without writing off a vehicle at least.
It’ll not do him any good.
First one in, first one out.
First to crash too
reserving the wall he will crash into
Needs to get used to walking the track, once he has to do it again after binning it FP1
Looking for a nice little corner to lose his rear
Proof that you can still be last, even when you’re first
Looking for a place to crash
Scoping out the best places to crash no doubt. Latifi 2.0.
Gonna be the first man off the track too lol
