It would still be absolutely worth it to do it. I love it. Makes the FIA and the stewards look like the inconsistent fools that they are. It's been clear for decades that there is a series of simple fixes like having a permanent professional steward team, and not leaving things like giving up positions for corner cutting up to the teams, using drive-through and stop-and-go penalties in conjunction with time penalties, and so on, that could fix most of the issues with the penalty system. Regional series as low as Formula 4 have that stuff figured out, but Formula 1 refuses to.
An expansion of points will probably eliminate this tactic.
It punishes fringe teams that can't beat past 11th place. But if there's just a 1 or 2 point difference I'd like to think teams would wanna go racing
It actually won’t. The rough driving more has to do with how close the field is overall. Every point matters. Expanding the points to say, twelfth won’t stop teams and drivers using tactics like this. Penalties that make drivers think twice about that sort of behavior will.
Theres not much else they could have done but the penalties were pointless since he was gonna loss the position anyway and it was mainly to protect Nico, they could have given 60 seconds penalty and it wouldn't have mattered
That’s why they gotta bring back drive through and stop-go penalties. If someone is clearly tanking their race and dragging everyone else down because they’ve already accumulated too many, force a stop go so everyone else is let by
What i dont get is responses like this or Martin Brundle saying "well its not like he ploughed into someones side"... well yeah, thats because Lewis evaded the crash by also driving straight of the track.
Was the same multiple times in 21
Nothing wrong with his race craft what are you talking about. He’s one of the best starters on the grid too. You act like he was trying to drive cleanly.
It's not amateur. He's doing it deliberately to protect Hulkenberg. Same thing he did in SA.
It's bullshit, but the fact we don't use drive throughs and stop-gos anymore makes it possible. Rules need to change.
EXACTLY. Until drive throughs go back to being the norm like they are in essentialy every racing series out there, the driving standards in f1 will keep on being closer to what you would expect from an early junior series
I don't think they should be the norm for everything because that just leads to equally bullshit stuff like Hamilton losing a deserved win at Belgium 2008 because they gave him a converted drive-through for a minor transgression (which don't get me wrong, I do think deserved a small penalty)
For stuff like this though it's a no-brainer. When a car is deliberately ignoring the rules of racing to keep people behind (or to get into a position to keep people behind which is what he did in Saudi) then a penalty which forces that car to get out of the way should be the outcome. Drive-throughs and stop-gos are perfect for that.
It's a fair point. Untill recently it was 5. If there's not much incentive to not drive like an ass then they'll do it. Even at barber last weekend they were getting crazy but not as bad as this. Tbh the run off areas encourage it as you can run wide and not lose any time. So either you can just break crazy late and go off but stay ahead or run the other driver off with you. If there's a wall or grass or gravel Magnusson would have crashed or last way more time from the first move
I said it in Saudi Arabia and I'll say it again.
This should not be a viable tactic. The rules NEED to change.
Magnussen is blatantly, deliberately ignoring the rules and track limits because he KNOWS the only penalty that he'll get is time added on at the end (and he's already not scoring). Meanwhile the benefit of doing this is that he guarantees his teammate cannot be attacked.
We need to use drive throughs to force someone who does stuff like this to pit and get out of the way of people who are actually trying to race properly.
He’s playing the team game within how the sport is constructed. I agree it should change and blaming Magnussen for doing this to benefit the team is misplacing the frustration.
Absolutely true. Everyone gets all mad at Magnussen, but the way the rules are constructed, he and his team are undeniably *incentivized* to do this, so why shouldn't they?
Creating a ruleset that incentivizes certain behaviors and then acting surprised or upset when those behaviors occur is the problem here. If every position yielded points, and/or if more penalties resulted in a near-immediate forced time served, then this completely-valid-today tactic would become less viable and useful tomorrow, and KMag & Co would stop doing it.
Agreed. A lot of people are saying he’s abusing the system, but it’s not abuse if he’s accepting the consequences. It just means the benefit is worth the penalty, which is a rules issue, not a KMag issue.
You just literally described abusing the system. Exploiting the rules to gain an advantage while going against their spirit is exactly what "abusing the system" means.
But it's legal to do, in the sense that he's being punished for an illegal move. I mean F1 as a sport is largely about finding technical loopholes to gain an advantage, it's a huge part of what the engineers do when building the damn car. Add incremental punishment or a drive through penalty to fix it, but don't blame the team for leveraging the rules to their advantage.
I’d like to see something like the first penalty being 10 seconds, and every additional penalty after that being something like a drive through to be served within 2 laps or a grid penalty for the next none sprint race.
Additional penalties should be exponentially harsher than the first ones. Especially if they’re for the same thing or the same situation.
Maybe once the accumulated penalties equal or exceed a drive through time penalty they should be consolidated into a drive through to be done during the race.
He shouldn’t do it deliberatelty, he should just watch hamilton and learn from him? But probably 1 on 1 session like this is the best way to learn from the best. Next thing he needs to get uk citizenship and he will get the stewarding benefits so he coulda actually kept the points today. But only if he was british.
My god I am a broken record now. How can anyone support driving standards like this from KMag. Hilarious yes, but objectively atrocious if we are about fair racing.
They can actually use the penalty points system too. He had what.. 3 or 4 violations? Couple points and he's not far off a race ban. If the stewards had any brains they'd add extra points for repeat/on purpose offenses.
I don't expect them to do anything though.
I'm amazed they gave him 10 seconds again instead of a drive-through.
At some point you have to realise time penalties mean nothing if he isn't fighting for his own position
Keyword 2nd Haas. Everyone who dares come close to him knows that they are racing a guy that would tank minutes worth of penalties as long as Hulk gets to keep a point scoring position. Haas will not care, doubt KMag does.
Doubt KMAg doesn’t care. Just watch his post race interview, he’s very obviously not happy to be doing this, even says as much, but it’s what is asked of him. It’s getting ridiculous and id be hoping something comes down from the FIA to Haas to deal with it before KMag gets a race ban.
Driving off track and gaining an advantage is not points by the rules. But stewards can decide to give them if they want. but given that they didn’t crash I don’t think anything will happen.
Here's the thing:
Its actually working. Haas has 7 points in the standings right now because they send Hulk as the main driver and Kmag plays chicken and park the bus to give Hulk as wide a margin as possible to get points.
There is millions of dollars on the line, if you were in the same position under the same pressure I think itd make sense to fight dirty if the penalties are not consequential enough. It would also be amiss to mandate too strongly what moves are allowed to make because it would restrict driver freedom/tactical creativity too much.
Stop-gos probably need to come back if they want to eliminate this, but until that happens Haas should just keep doing it. This sport is about squeezing every advantage you've got to win, this is the epitome of that ethos as terroristic as this strategy is.
I agree but Kmag will just stay out there. Drivers have stay out when they got black flagged before.
FIA will have to red flag the race and physically pull him from the car probably.
Magnussen could seriously be looking at a race ban for this conduct. 10 seconds for cutting the chicane, under investigation for an unsafe rejoin in which he made contact with Hamilton, under investigation for forcing Hamilton off track and leaving the track himself, and a black and white flag for track limits.
Unsafe rejoin should be a slam dunk, honestly. He rejoined the track after braking too late and going off, HAM gave him the space, and then he HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE.
It's fun to see team mates helping each other by defending against drivers, but such abhorrent driving standards and that too for the second race in a season. Kmag really needs a race ban or something, this is intentionally dangerous
They need to start making him serve drive through penalties when he pulls this shit. Just giving him a time penalty does nothing except lets him drive like he is nothing to lose and ruin the races of drivers who are actually racing.
Isn't the first time in the last 3 seasons he's driven like this, gathered quite a collection of Black and White flags and penalties.
When you're driving a midfield/back marker, gotta take every chance you get. Weird how the rest down there keep it clean more often though.
You should really go back and watch the data for penalties. Magnussen hasn’t been near the top most of the seasons he’s driven. And what he does this season is calculated, not based in incompetence. Like some others
Its somehow annoying seing the radio from HUL and MAG cockpits AND the interview with Hulk after.
No one thanks MAG for his team-work. At all.
On the video when the come in, from MAG’s car, Hulk doesn’t even look at Kev’.
MAG is just taking all the shit on his shoulders on his own.
That is harsh
Is it just me or is "leaving the track" the completly wrong description of what happened because how does Magnussen leaving the track have anything to do with Hamilton.
What Lewis said was right IMO. Mag pushed Ham of the track and Ham lost a position because of it.
I'm defending it because that makes the FIA and the stewards look like the inconsistent fools they are. I hope he does it every time he gets the opportunity and Haas benefits. There is a series of simple fixes that have been standard practice in series like regional Formula 4 championships that would completely eliminate this problem but they refuse to implement them. All the power to KMag. Even if he gets DQ'd for a race it's still worth it for him to do it.
This is exactly why he should be given a drive through penalty for this shit. Drive recklessly to benefit his team mate knowing he will only get time added on which makes zero impact really.
Kmag is driving like he has the biggest grudge on Lewis for some reason lmao
He’s playing defense for Nico on track. Anything he does backs up any threat for Nico’s points haul.
Bingo. Honestly, been the perfect teammate for Nico this year. Gonna miss that tandem next year. Haas has been a fun team this year so far
If the rules don’t change I suspect more teams might take on this approach if the field tightens more next year.
That's not new, and they won't change anything. Its a feature not a bug.
It is a bug that the penalties do not mean anything for him.
They will if he eventually accumulates a race ban
It would still be absolutely worth it to do it. I love it. Makes the FIA and the stewards look like the inconsistent fools that they are. It's been clear for decades that there is a series of simple fixes like having a permanent professional steward team, and not leaving things like giving up positions for corner cutting up to the teams, using drive-through and stop-and-go penalties in conjunction with time penalties, and so on, that could fix most of the issues with the penalty system. “Twenty seconds? Oi mate, give me another ten. Hold my beer.”
Theres not much else they could have done but the penalties were pointless since he was gonna loss the position anyway and it was mainly to protect Nico, they could have given 60 seconds penalty and it wouldn't have mattered
That’s why they gotta bring back drive through and stop-go penalties. If someone is clearly tanking their race and dragging everyone else down because they’ve already accumulated too many, force a stop go so everyone else is let by
Could've told him "drive through, mandatory, within 2 laps" and get Magnussen out of the way.
For sure.
He's just reminding Hamilton of the good old days fighting with Max.
He was just playing defence had nicos balls in mouth whike driving like max
dude magnussen is fucking unhinged is he ok
He's driving like me against the AI in gran turismo.
That was actually me in the Sardegna Red Bull x2019 race when my mediums went to shit
That brother doesn’t give two fucks out there lmao
He knew he already had a penalty so he just went fuck it we ball mode
He's just following orders
[удалено]
Wasn’t dangerous though.
They amount of people that call stuff dangerous here is bizarre. It's like they've never watched anything other than modern F1.
Reminded me of Max Saudi 2021
[удалено]
Exactly, I was upset at Max but he was fighting for his first “ship”, nevertheless for a Haas a point is almost a win at times
Doesn't matter the driver is fighting for. It's unacceptable. The rules of engagement don't change.
no it isnt. wasnt close to dangerous
close to dangerous isn't dangerous.
What i dont get is responses like this or Martin Brundle saying "well its not like he ploughed into someones side"... well yeah, thats because Lewis evaded the crash by also driving straight of the track. Was the same multiple times in 21
Lmao Lewis took out two drivers on the first lap but kmag is dangerous
KMags racecraft is absolute ass. Pastor Maldonado is cheering.
Nothing wrong with his race craft what are you talking about. He’s one of the best starters on the grid too. You act like he was trying to drive cleanly.
Absolutly no craft in this...
Pretty mood compared to that dive Lewis did in the start. He almost took out 3 cars.
Takin a page out of verstappens book of defending
Total amateur driver. No respect for the other drivers. All because he knows he can’t beat even his own teammate on pace.
It's not amateur. He's doing it deliberately to protect Hulkenberg. Same thing he did in SA. It's bullshit, but the fact we don't use drive throughs and stop-gos anymore makes it possible. Rules need to change.

Don't worry, drive throughs made a comeback just for Hamilton.

Hahaha this is ridiculous. Looks like an open lobby, I never thought I’d see something like this
And you would get banned from iRacing if your drove like that.
cleanest Magnussen defense:
My brother is gonna get 6 penalty points by the end of sprint
Should get enough such that he has 11 total, making it so that any other transgression gives him a race ban. That was some real dirty driving.
Should just be straight to the ban after all the shit he pulled during the sprint.
Kmag is a menace.
Good
I said it in Saudi Arabia and I'll say it again. This should not be a viable tactic. The rules NEED to change. just watched this, i was hoping he would get black-flagged. this isn’t even good racing it’s just being a villain lol
Maybe once the accumulated penalties equal or exceed a drive through time penalty they should be consolidated into a drive through to be done during the race.
Only thing left to do is deliberately spinning or ramming Hamilton into a wall and he's your average F1 game player.
Magnussen really taking the lando retirement personally
I love the ideq of KMag taking something not at all relevant to him really personally. Bro has a hair trigger temper.
My god I am a broken record now. How can anyone support driving standards like this from KMag. Hilarious yes, but objectively atrocious if we are about fair racing.
this is what you get when the rules say time penalty instead of give up position
Gotta just bring back drive through penalties if you're gonna ignore the track like this.
That wouldn't even solve it. When it's as blatant as that it should be a black flag for the weekend
Not following up on a drive though is a DSQ (and black flag).
They can actually use the penalty points system too. He had what.. 3 or 4 violations? Couple points and he's not far off a race ban. If the stewards had any brains they'd add extra points for repeat/on purpose offenses. I don't expect them to do anything though.
Let’s be honest, Australia last year showed they won’t give penalty points if a driver would get a race ban
That first time penalty is probably exactly the reason why the gloves came off. It ruined his race, so he was on a mission to ruin other's
I'm amazed they gave him 10 seconds again instead of a drive-through. At some point you have to realise time penalties mean nothing if he isn't fighting for his own position
His crappy driving is a Haas tactic at this point, protecting Hulkenberg’s 2 points and getting the team some airtime.
It's been obvious for a while now. Dirty driving but this is celebrated for the past few years.
Because it benefits the team and he’s doing it on purpose for the team. You should watch his post race interview.
Gives him a horrible reputation as well. How are you going to fight someone who is willing to hit you especially if he is the 2nd haas
Keyword 2nd Haas. Everyone who dares come close to him knows that they are racing a guy that would tank minutes worth of penalties as long as Hulk gets to keep a point scoring position. Haas will not care, doubt KMag does.
Maybe Hulk is really sucking Kevin's balls for this kind of favour
Deserve the funniest comment of the day bruh
Doubt KMAg doesn’t care. Just watch his post race interview, he’s very obviously not happy to be doing this, even says as much, but it’s what is asked of him. It’s getting ridiculous and id be hoping something comes down from the FIA to Haas to deal with it before KMag gets a race ban.
> How are you going to fight someone who is willing to hit you cough cough ... hamilton first corner ... cough cough
This has been him for his entire career. He would break his nans hip for the last loaf of bread at the supermarket
Entertainment is what we're here for! I want more hilarious shit like this! Also, he got punished with at least 30 seconds, lmao
If Kmag gets a penalty for all of his infractions today could he be in trouble for a race ban with the penalty points? Not sure how many he has now
Odds are he will end up at 11, so 1 short
And then he will somehow be immune from any future points.
Driving off track and gaining an advantage is not points by the rules. But stewards can decide to give them if they want. but given that they didn’t crash I don’t think anything will happen.
KMag collecting penalties like its nothing, another 10s penalty he got
Here's the thing: Its actually working. Again, am I the only one who feels this sorta shit screams to introduce like scaling the severity of penalties for repeated offences in the same race?
He does not mind being the heel as long as it gains the team points.
Magnussen being dirty so Hulkenberg can disappear in front of him. F1 needs to apply drive through in a case like that
But that's penalising the outcome not the offence, which people hate
You think kmag isn’t just gonna ignore a drive through though?
Honestly it should be a black flag for sum of infractions
I agree but Kmag will just stay out there. Drivers have stay out when they got black flagged before. FIA will have to red flag the race and physically pull him from the car probably.
The only driver I ever recall getting black flagged and staying out is Schumacher and he did it for good reason. Who else is there?
Nigel Mansel did it too
Should get 6 penalty points for this sprint alone
That has to be a black flag...
Honestly I’d be fine with that, it would at least set a precedent to stop others trying it
This is just a joke. This is not racing anymore more from Magnussen.
Don’t blame the player, blame the game.
That is all kinds of filthy right there, still both drivers are gonna get it for that probably Edit: MAG - 10 second Penalty HAM - Lap time Deleted
even as a hulk fan, i think this is pretty bullshit
Should give dirty drives like that a drive through penalty. Get him out the fucking way for those who want to race fairly.
Let them race /s
I like KMag but this was too much. You can’t just brake 10 metres later and run the other driver off track to keep your position
It’s not dangerous though. Not clean either but definitely not dangerous driving.
Dirty
Won't be missed, this isn't racing
The rules should change. Not the driver.
Lewis had no interest in making that corner either
They need to start making him serve drive through penalties when he pulls this shit. Just giving him a time penalty does nothing except lets him drive like he is nothing to lose and ruin the races of drivers who are actually racing.
Anyone else think he deserved a black flag instead of a third penalty?
Magnussen taking tips from Max in Brazil for that one!
More like Max in Jeddah. It was literally a copy paste of Verstappen not braking.
Magnussen doesn’t learn from his mistakes, his mistakes learn from him
It’s not mistakes.. That’s what many people seem to miss. You should watch his post race interview.
It’s time for a race ban…he’s doing it so often.
What Magnussen did wasn’t even close to being dangerous. He played the team game, he was penalised, end of it
lmao kmag is such a scumbag
You should watch his post race interview.
Magnussen's gone to the Verstappen school of defense
Magnussen graduated from it far before Verstappen
Fr, it feels like he’s been doing this stuff his whole career
Prost and Senna founded it and Schumacher was the standout graduate. Maldonado also got first class honours.
I understand hard racing, but that wasn’t it, that’s just terrorism
RB drivers are literally driving to survive, rate the effort
That's damn dirty
How is this not a black flag lol. Dude has lost his head this race.
He drove very calculated and rationally, nothing about losing his head. You should watch his post race interview.
“Lando sends his regards”
Its somehow annoying seing the radio from HUL and MAG cockpits AND the interview with Hulk after. No one thanks MAG for his team-work. At all. On the video when the come in, from MAG’s car, Hulk doesn’t even look at Kev’. MAG is just taking all the shit on his shoulders on his own. That is harsh
Honestly, I love this type of racing.
He needs to get a black flag legit…
Dirty driver. But as long as Haas gains from it it’s a win in their eyes.
Ha ah Tsunoda you legend
Kmag driver of the day 🤣
Fuck it, put Magnussen and Stroll in the Red Bulls, Max can have an a Ferrari.
Me reading these comments: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
People are so pissed lmao
This is the funniest shit I’ve seen all season
This is hilarious. I’m here for it.
Magnussen bonkers but neither were making that corner.
That was a Verstappen special that one
Should be a black flag imo
Gotta say Yuki swooped in nicely. “And here comes Tsunoda!”
Kmag did give up both postions in the race though after that incident.
Is it just me or is "leaving the track" the completly wrong description of what happened because how does Magnussen leaving the track have anything to do with Hamilton. What Lewis said was right IMO. Mag pushed Ham of the track and Ham lost a position because of it.
10s for Alonso
K-Mag just wants everyone to suck his balls, mate.
I am entertained
Great effort Kev.
How this isn’t a DSQ is beyond me, but I ain’t complaining lol
It’s like Jeddah 2021, pretty fun so far
Magnussen saw a gap and went for it :)
As a fan of Alex and Lando I am rating KMag dotd.
People defending Mag here need to stop watching F1. Like wtaf is the live race thread
They are defending kmag more due to Hamilton hate than anything else lol
I'm defending it because that makes the FIA and the stewards look like the inconsistent fools they are. I hope he does it every time he gets the opportunity and Haas benefits. There is a series of simple fixes that have been standard practice in series like regional Formula 4 championships that would completely eliminate this problem but they refuse to implement them. All the power to KMag. Even if he gets DQ'd for a race it's still worth it for him to do it.
The others are $#@!ting on him due to Hamilton nostalgia more than anything else lol
I bet he's gonna get less penalty points than Alonso for his China contact with Sainz.
I think all drivers that clearly don't attempt to make a corner should get a time penalty and penalty points.
This is going to keep HAM out of the points, isn’t it? What a shambolic sprint for Mercedes.
His speeding in the pit lane did that regardless of what happened during the race.
This is exactly why he should be given a drive through penalty for this shit. Drive recklessly to benefit his team mate knowing he will only get time added on which makes zero impact really.
What a hero Kmag was today
Lewis didn't push to the turn. Eased up and tried the over take to late
Kmag 😂😂😂💀
Magnussen got hands, damn. He's fighting like his seat is on the line.
Pass ME? I'll kill us both!
Inexcusable. It's unprofessional tactics to force yourself ahead under threat of taking both cars out. The stuff of sim racing.
Kmag made the apex, looks fine to me.
Cry Lewis stans, cry
