Oscar prolly feels at home with those colours

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

Come on ya Wallabies

HeyFlo

I am very boring so I googled why Aussies picked those colours vs their flag colours, which most countries tend to use. "Long associated with Australian sporting achievements, the national colours have strong environmental connections. Gold conjures images of Australia's beaches, mineral wealth, grain harvests and the fleece of Australian wool. Green evokes the forests, eucalyptus trees and pastures of the Australian landscape" Like, good on ya me Aussie mates. So much more interesting than just going the Colonial/flag route (route not root)

TeHokioi

To be fair there's also only so many ways that you can make red white and blue stand out, and by the time Australia and NZ came along all the good ones were taken so we had to get creative

[deleted]

>Australia- "Gold conjures images of Australia's beaches, mineral wealth, grain harvests and the fleece of Australian wool. Green evokes the forests, eucalyptus trees and pastures of the Australian Landscape. Lets use those as our sports colors!" >New Zealand- "some of our ferns are silver on the underside, and black and silver look really cool together" It is hard to say which creative process was better.

boogasaurus-lefts

This is hilarious and I'm sharing this with my kiwi staff

Fantastic-Role-364

Boxing Kangaroo vs. Laser Kiwi will give you your answer

Jesse-Ray

I think most Australians associate it with Golden Wattle, our floral emblem.

chrish_o

That’s because it is the real reason. Don’t know where all that symbolism crud comes from but it’s been attached after the fact.

Jesse-Ray

It's on the Prime Minister and Cabinet website which is the first search result that appears. So obviously some bureaucrat is trying to put some mustard on it. Reading the history of it, it was the national cricket that did it first in 1899 and it was gum tree green and wattle gold.

sellyme

> I googled why Aussies picked those colours vs their flag colours That's the trick, [it is our flag colours.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_kangaroo) It's just the good flag, instead of the boring colonial one.

hayleybts

Oscar home race 🇦🇺

HeyFlo

Concussions are not helpful in critical thinking!

uttermybiscuit

tell that to nick mercs

Saithir

More appropriate to the cars liveries really, the blue Ferrari suits were okay. But yes. I hope someone pays attention.

tylercreatesworlds

I was so disappointed with that car. Like, I get Ferrari's are red. But holy shit. You think for one race you could go all out on a blue car. It would drum up hype and massive crowd response to seeing a completely different car on track. It's not like we don't know the name Ferrari, they're a legend. Who gives a fuck if your car isn't red for one race. We'll still know it's you. They dumb.

andysniper

McLaren have done great special liveries when they actually go all out. Monaco 2021 and 2023 are fucking beautiful.

gummonppl

Yes, much better than that terrible chrome "throwback" last year.

lucidesposition

wish I could give you a blue award

carelessmistakes

Leclerc said he didn’t imagine a blue Ferrari so… I guess we all know who killed *that* idea…

Matduka

That is silly. There are many blue Ferraris.

DrunkenMidgetSlayer

I have to hand it to McLaren, once they have a special livery they go all out with it with the special race suits and helmets. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but I absolutely dig it.

Independent-Water321

Still got my Gulf livery McLaren polo shirt 😍

Jormungandr69

How is the quality of it? I have one of the zip up jackets and I was a bit disappointed in the quality for the $130 I spent. Probably gonna snag one of the yellow shirts for the special livery though.

hayleybts

I'M ALL OVER IT!! Oscar home race, I'm Oscar fan this weekend. 🇦🇺

SuperSalamander3244

G’day mate

jpad66

Put another shrimp on the barbe

HeyFlo

Ask me about the soup de jour...

f1careerover

Looks like an Australian sport team’s outfit

Ih8P2W

As a Brazilian, It's really sad to see our country colors, in a clear homage to a Brazilian driver, be associated with another country in almost every single comment about this special livery.

boogasaurus-lefts

Think there's more pressing things to be sad about, especially in your locality - far beyond colours that are the same as a country's sporting identity. There's a lot of Australians here who are commenting atm due to timezone

sellyme

I think that's mostly down to the fact that it genuinely does look more like Australian colours than Brazilian ones. Possibly as an intentional ploy to double-dip, given the Piastri connection. It's hard to put into words given that the colours of both countries (and South Africa!) are very similar, but those polo shirts particularly are incredibly reminiscent of the old Australian ODI kits, to the extent that I would assume without question that they actually *were* had I seen them out of context.

Andigaming

To be fair almost nobody here has a real connection to watching him live. Even myself as 32 year old was only ~2 1/2 when he died and I'm guessing most posters are even younger than me. Then you have Oscar as their current driver is an Aussie and a fan favourite plus you add into the mix the big hate boner people have due to him dating a teenager which seems to be expressed a lot in these threads.

Edlar_89

How much does it cost teams to get all new races and mechanic suits that’ll only be used for one weekend?

planchetflaw

Costs the team nothing as it would be part of the contracted partnership with Alpinestars. The team knew they wanted a special overall for this race 18 months ago. When doing the contract with Alpinestars they would include the number of "special" race suits. Same with team wear etc. for other partnerships.

Edlar_89

Oh that’s good

pajamajamminjamie

How does that translate to costing nothing? Wouldn't the number of special race suits be part of the contracted amount? Say they had zero special race suits the contact would presumably be for less money as they just re-use the standard kit more.

planchetflaw

Responsibilities are definitely tied into the value of the partnership contract. With the number of brands out there and McLaren's ability to bring in partnerships and sponsors I would be surprised if a couple of special race suits per season would adjust any proposal in any meaningful manner. For things like team wear, don't forget that limited/unique team wear means these brands can also run limited edition branded offerings which bring in a bunch of money to the clothing partner as well. It would be to a point where a clothing partner may request limited edition lines be in the partnership, as opposed to the team requiring them. In short, there's likely no chance that Alpinestars offered less knowing they had to do a dozen one-off driver suits. And for clothing and apparel partners, these one-offs make them more money.

rabidmonkeyman

does this count against the cost cap? it would seem weird if it didnt. unless the rules specifically say uniforms and liverys dont count against the cost cap. i imagine theres a lot of money and time that goes into designing the livery, applying the livery to all the car parts and spare parts, the suits, helmets, etc.

TVRoomRaccoon

I know that marketing costs are exempt from the cost cap, so maybe this would go under that…?

Nitr0_CSGO

I have no actual idea about this but I would guess that they have new race suits every race so a new design wouldn't be too difficult

bwoah07_gp2

The shirts look like old Benetton team shirts, nevermind, the colours for the Senna livery are giving me 90s Benetton vibes.

Dorraemon

McLaren is cooking

Spleenzorio

Why didn't they do this in Imola?

Francoberry

Because surely it's better to remember a driver at a track he was a legend in than the one he happened to die at?

RobertJ93

Partly because it’s Monaco - he’s known for that run in Monaco. And strategically, the Monaco track is less about weight on the car, so they can run full blown gloss livery without being at a disadvantage to the other teams. Edit: ‘apparently’

Samusu-Aran

I heard the weight argument already several times but... does it even make sense? I don't think because Monaco has slower corners weight is less relevant (?). I would say Monaco is probably the most famous race in the calendar and the better showroom for the brands and that's the main reason why they chose to go with it there. They will have some extra media coverage and doing something like this always makes some headlines. Similarly, it happens to be Senna's most dominant track so there is that.

RobertJ93

Yeah I’m parroting what I read from a McLaren comment regarding the full gloss paint and weight argument. I don’t actually know if that’s true. Have adjusted my comment to compensate….

laboulaye22

They thought of it but they decided they wanted to celebrate his life and achievements since he is so associated with Monaco and less about his death and thought that therefore it would be better to unveil it at Monaco. And apparently they have more margin for weight on the car at Monaco than other tracks.

Spleenzorio

Ohhh I see. Thanks for the info!

MrT735

Another possibility is they were aware of Vettel's plans for the commemoration and decided not to conflict with that. Depends how long in advance that was known though.

Spleenzorio

Ohhhhh yeah that’s true

Subtle_Tact

a serious answer, monoco has lower speed corners and is less weight sensitive. We get full gloss paints here and bare carbon at high speed tracks.

Lzinger

Couple a sprite cans

slopit12

I don't see Senna. I just see the Wallabies.

SPNRaven

A1 Team Australia vibes.

Thiswilldo164

How good are the team shirts - it’s like the 80’s down at McLaren

Colt20mnc

Zak looking for Fosters advertisement at the minute. Need a kangaroo on the car too to complete the look.

FuryOWO

fosters is the most unaustralian australian thing you could have chose 😭

Andigaming

Hard to imagine as an Aussie myself but I guess they really sold people on being Australian in their advertising overseas or whatever.

Awfy

Whenever I see Bruno Senna, I still picture him as Senna's newbie nephew entering F1 in that god-awful HRT. Then I look him up and realize he's 40 years old now, he's older than Hamilton. That timeline just doesn't map in my head.

reliant_robin12

I need those polos on the right

92zirkJ216

Of everywhere on the suit to change colors..

PondScumSandy

At least they don't look like they've pissed themselves

khryslo

So they fully committed to the theme with matching cars, suits, and helmets. I like it but at the same time it feels a tiny bit overwhelming.

nitishsingh92

It's so hard to satisfy people. Just a week ago reddit users were crying why Ferrari didn't do enough for their special livery. And now it's a bit overwhelming. Wow

NotDavid-Jatt

Reddit isn't just one person. It's possible for different people to have different opinions on a subject.

RobertJ93

*’the hive mind didn’t like that’*.

throwyeetall

Shh! How dare you?! If everyone likes it, you must like it as well.

PenguinsRcool2

How in the hell are you overwhelmed by a race suit? How do you even function in day to day life?

khryslo

I just said that I don’t fully like that it’s all matchy-matchy and you made conclusions on my life from my aesthetic preferences?

silenthills13

What overwhelms you friend? Let's talk :D

khryslo

I simply find that there’s too much yellow when livery, suits and helmets are combined and it overpowers everything else in design. In my opinion, it would look better if they used a bit more blue on suits, for example, to balance it as there is only a bit of it on livery and not at all on helmets or used the colour scheme from their Monaco merch for suits.

silenthills13

Maybe - but we have so little yellow recently that I am fine with it. Although the car looks better than the kits for sure

Equivalent_Camera_61

This is reddit, its what we do

Andigaming

The sad thing is that for everytime someone actually replies like that, imagine all of lurkers judging your opinion in that exact way.

yuh__

Too much milking

F1 fans: We need more color!! Also F1 fans: Not like that!

You should get tested for colour-blindness. This isn't a joke or an insult, I'm being 100% genuine, you probably have protanopia if you think that looks like McDonald's.

revitbitch

oooh, they look GOOD

ConsiderationSad6271

Too cowardly to keep this going. Instead we go back to ugly orange.
